Gibson.com’s Top 50 Guitar Solos

From Gibson.com:

Gibson.com’s Top 50 Guitar Solos: Full List, Readers Poll Revealed

50. “Beat It,” Michael Jackson (Eddie Van Halen)

When fans think of Eddie Van’s best solos, they often forget his guest turn on Michael Jackson’s crossover classic “Beat It.” Van Halen’s solo cuts through the song like a chainsaw, before his fast fingers erupt into a frenzy not normally heard on a #1 pop single. The guitarist — who recorded the solo with Quincy Jones and Jackson free of charge — perfectly balanced his contribution between slick pop and overdriven rock. The result was something perfect for the King of Pop, and yet unmistakably Eddie. — Bryan Wawzenek

14. “Hot for Teacher,” Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen)

How does one describe the best of the best from the best of the best? In the solo for “Hot for Teacher,” Eddie Van Halen doesn’t just deliver one of the most blistering, melodic and captivating solos of his career, which is saying a lot. No, Edward also puts on a clinic on how impromptu time changes for the guitarist (while the rhythm section remains locked in 4/4) are perfectly acceptable — as long as your name is Eddie Van Halen. Do not try this solo at home. You’ll undoubtedly jettison your guitar and take up the recorder, which would be a shame. — Sean Patrick Dooley

2. “Eruption,” Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen)

You’ve heard of the Big Four? With apologies to Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax, I’m referring to the original Big Four: “Mona Lisa” (Leonardo da Vinci), “David” (Michelangelo), “The Thinker” (Auguste Rodin) and, of course, “Eruption” (Eddie Van Halen). The first time I heard “Eruption,” I remember asking my friend to play it again for me because I wasn’t sure what I had just heard. “Oh, it’s a guitar, and it’s being played by one guy!” he assured me. It was too difficult for these young ears to comprehend that the symphonic cacophony I had just heard came from one man, one guitar and no overdubs. “Eruption” was an epiphany to me as a fledgling guitarist, as well as to millions of music fans everywhere. Nearly 30 years (and a zillion guitar solos) later, I’ve yet to hear its equal. — Sean Patrick Dooley

The Top 50 Guitar Solos: Repeat Offenders

Some guitarists’ soloing greatness can’t be contained by one entry (or even three!). Check out these repeat offenders on Gibson.com’s Top 50 Guitar Solos of All Time:

Eddie Van Halen: 3 (“Eruption,” “Hot for Teacher” and “Beat It”)

  • vaijuju

Eruption is a instrumental not a solo. A solo need a song!

  • J-Dub

I love VHND. I’ve went ahead and made it my homepage, these guys make something out of nothing and do a fantastic job of keeping us hungry fans updated. Kudos to you guys behind the curtain!

  • Snakefinger

A solo by definition is “a piece or a section of a piece played or sung by a single performer.” Eruption is a “solo” piece and is by far one of the best of all time. What was #1?!

  • patrick

ugh, another top 50 (10,100…whatever).does it really matter to people how other people rank thing in order like this?i honestly dont see the point of these things.

  • ikethebird

Some B-side choices would be cool also.House of Pain,Push comes to shove,Pleasure Dome etc….

  • Austin

Eruption is a solo. a instrumental can also be considered a song. i believe eruption should be first because when i heard it i swear i almost jizzed in my pants! Spanish fly should be in the top ten. it a very interesting and unique solo and its hard as nails!

  • Austin

and i just enjoy these lists to see eddie be recognized as one of the best always. only point in them for me.

  • phillster

Ed should be in there again for”Ripley”Lol

  • alexandre

Guitar World (feb,1990): Eddie is considered the best guitar player of the 80′s and “National treasure” for his contribution on MJ’s “Thriller”, the first participation of a white music star in a black music star. And besides that, the solo is a masterpiece!!

  • Rob Newell

Nice list although I always ranked Beat It a little higher if not just for it’s originality in genre crossover. Any road up, the top 10 from this list is as follows ( and not my top 10 I must emphasise, this is from the Gibson website. ) : -

    10. “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Queen (Brian May)
    9. “Johnny B. Goode,” Chuck Berry)
    8. “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” The Beatles (Eric Clapton)
    7. “Layla,” Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton, Duane Allman)
    6. “Free Bird,” Lynyrd Skynyrd (Gary Rossington, Allen Collins)
    5. “Comfortably Numb,” Pink Floyd (David Gilmour)
    4. “Hotel California,” Eagles (Don Felder, Joe Walsh)
    3. “All Along the Watchtower,” The Jimi Hendrix Experience
    2. “Eruption,” Van Halen (Eddie Van Halen)
    1. “Stairway to Heaven,” Led Zeppelin (Jimmy Page)

  • Randy

Argue whether “Eruption” is a solo or an instrumental, even leave it off the list if it doesn’t count, I don’t care, but as long as it’s on there, it should be #1. I doubt there is a guitarist in the world (or the casual listener for that manner) that heard “Eruption” for the first time and didn’t think “holy crap!” It made an impact on the first listen, and it made an impact on, at the very least, the following decade of rock and pop music. That has to count for the top spot.

I have to say that I’m glad to see the “Beat It” solo on the list. It should even be higher in my opinion. I’ve always thought that this little, random favor that Eddie did was the greatest example of his tricks and style in the shortest amount of time. So much flavor in a few seconds, like “Eruption Light”. It also demonstrates Eruption’s impact that I mentioned. In ’78 when we were rockin’ out to the first album, how many of us would have guessed that Eddie would end up featured on a Michael Jackson song without compromise to the EVH style and sound? One of the “heaviest” guitar players in history, even made people outside the realm of hard rock perk up and listen!

  • http://gswoerner@hotmail.com Jim

I don’t put any stock in the top 10. It was like gibson.com was given a list of the known top classic rock bands and songs and they just needed to make sure each was listed in the top 10. Ed seems to always get screwed out of the #1 spot time and time again on these top whatever lists.

Seriously, the top 10 (or even 20) should include nothing but Van Halen and Hendrix.

  • Ray

Pleasure Dome is one of the best displays of VH as a 3 piece totally kicking ass. The lyrics aside, the music is about as good as it gets…
    Stairway to Heaven…um, whatever…

  • Roth-A-Holic

I guess I’m too much of a Roth-era purist to give any credibility to these kind of lists. Sure, “Eruption” belongs in the Top 3 all-time greatest solos, but why no mention of the smokin’ solos from “In a Simple Rhyme”….”Hear About It Later”….”Push Comes to Shove”….”Sinner’s Swing”??? Those are all hair-raising solos that no one can come close to playing except The King of 10 Fingers and 6 Strings.

  • JACK N SAM

Stairway to Heaven is a good solo, but the number 1 solo of all time? Please. Half the solos on the VH debut album are more powerful than STH. When VH was released it revolutionized guitar and rock music. It had an amazing impact – everybody wanted to find out what this new kid was doing and how he did it. Ed had a completely unique style. Can the same really be said for the solo in STH? It’s good, but it’s just a regular solo – it doesn’t blow you away.

It’s like they said, well we can’t have VH be number 1 – that would be too obvious. Is it coincidence that the number 1 solo on this list is by a guitar player that actually played Gibson guitars?

  • Adrian

I am consistently impressed with the quality and knowledge that goes into Gibson’s lists. They really are the only people making greatest guitar anything lists that I respect. Rollingstone is always just awful.

  • Skibble5150

    Free Bird #6?
What a waste of 10 minutes of studio audio tape.
Same riffs over and over and over.

  • John

These lists are very political to say the least.

  • Tater Salad

Jim: uh, what about Led Zep? Jimmy Page rocks!!
Adrian: I stopped caring about rolling stone when they put Justin Bieber on the cover…

  • Rick A

I get why STH is #1 only because the song has really never been beaten. Eruption at #2 really says something and it’s where it belongs.

  • Brian

What is it with Ed always being #2 on every list?
He’s the best f’in guitarist ever.
Pleasure dome’s solo IS fantastic, people probably lose sight of it because lyrically it’s so non-sensible, but that solo does kick ass.

I swear, not to hate on Hendrix, but I bet that most people give him the top spot only because it’s the acceptable thing to do.

  • joe

FIRST OFF, WHY NO VAI OR MALMSTEEN, SATRIANI, MACALPINE, GARY MOORE ETC? FREEBIRD, NEIL YOUNG, THE KNACK? NOTHING WRONG WITH ANY MUSIC STYLE, I LIKE THEM ALL, BUT ON A GUITAR SOLO LIST THEY DO NOT BELONG. IT IS TRUE THAT EVERY GUITAR SOLO EDDIE DOES RIPS THOSE SONGS A NEW ONE. AND I LIKE LED ZEP, BUT STH #1, IT ‘S A SO-SO SOLO AND IN NO WAY JIMMY’S BEST. AND WHAT’S WITH NEIL YOUNG ON THE LIST TWICE, I HAVE A HARD TIME BELIEVING THIS IS READER BASED VOTING. IF YOU DON’T KNOW NEIL YOUNG, YOU WON’T EVEN KNOW OF THOSE SONGS. AND LAST BUT NOT LEAST #44 TRAIN KEPT A ROLLIN BY JOE PERRY/AEROSMITH…LOOK IT UP ON WIKIPEDIA…THAT SONG ON THE GET YOUR WINGS ALBUM IS SIMULATED LIVE, NOT LIVE AND THE SOLO IS PLAYED BY STEVE HUNTER AND DICK WAGNER, WHO PLAYED ON #25, THE LOU REED TUNE. THEY USED TO PLAY FOR ALICE COOPER AMONG OTHERS. IT’S REALLY WEIRD THAT ONE OF AEROSMITH’S SIGNATURE SONGS JOE PERRY AND BRAD WHITFORD DID NOT PLAY ON. WHY? ANYWAY, THESE LISTS ARE ALWAYS TROUBLE MAKERS. MUSIC IS NOT SPORTS, IT CAN’T BE MEASURED. PEOPLE’S TASTES ARE DIFFERENT. HAVING SAID THAT…EDDIE VAN HALEN SHOULD FILL THE #1-10 SLOTS ALL BY HIMSELF. HAVE A NICE DAY.

  • patrick

i was surprised that leaving your caps on does make your opinion any better as well…:^)

  • mark

Looks like they get their list from the amount of playtime on the radio.
Personally I think the solo from Feelin’ off Balance is a killer solo.

  • mark

WOnder how much royalties EVH would have made off Beat It the past almost 30 years.

  • joe

YOU COMPUTER PEOPLE AND YOUR CAPS RULES…I’M OLD AND I TYPE BETTER IN ALL CAPS, THAT’S JUST THE WAY I TYPE. I’M NOT YELLING OR WHATEVER IT’S SUPPOSED TO MEAN. I ALSO DON’T USE STUPID ABBREVIATIONS LIKE LOL AND OMG, I GUESS THAT MAKES MY OPINION MATTER LESS. GROW UP.

  • J5150C

Eruption, I’m the One, Push Comes to Shove, Little Dreamer, etc., and the beginning of Mean Street will blow anything on the list straight to the gutter! Jeeezz man!!!

  • joe

AND BOTH OF YOUR COMMENTS HAVE GRAMMATICAL ERRORS. IF YOU WERE TRYING TO MAKE FUN OF ME, SHOULDN’T YOU HAVE SAID doesn’t NOT does? WHY LEAVE COMMENTS AT ALL IF YOU HAVE NOTHING TO SAY?

  • SCAR

What about “One Foot out the door”????? Or “Drop Dead Legs”???? What the hell do I know,!!! I’m just a VH fan!!!! I pity the fools who make up these lists!!!!!

  • Chad

The “Beat It” solo stinks. Way below Eddie’s standard.

  • ftgjr

I can understand why STH is #1. It is the most requested song ever and is always #1 on the countdown charts. The song is a masterpiece. It is the most heard solo ever.

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

    @ Randy- Great post.

  • Fernando

What about ‘big trouble’ solo from zero?
A masterpeice almost forgotten with the same(or better)magic as the one put in the beat it solo.

  • Dooley

Wasn’t Dave against Ed being on a Michael Jackson record, which created tension between them…?

If so, Dave was on the “right” side of that argument, I’d say.

But that was long ago, doesn’t matter now.

I always turn this list’s #1 “Stairway to Heaven” off when it’s on the radio. Overexposure ruined it.

  • vaijuju

Sorry guys! I was wrong with “eruption” it’s not an instrumental is just a solo (is just a lead guitar no other instruments “just a little drum/bass).I think one of the best ed’s guitas solo is on “push comes to shove” Anyway. A very good solo you can sing it.

  • TheTruthHurts

ftgjr said: “I can understand why STH is #1. It is the most requested song ever and is always #1 on the countdown charts. The song is a masterpiece. It is the most heard solo ever.”

Using that logic, Happy Birthday is a better song than Unchained.

  • vaijuju

Stairway To heaven’ solo is great, you can sing it without music!

  • Roth-A-Holic

I agree about STH……WAY overexposed and overplayed. It bores me to tears when I hear it. Jimmy Page never impressed me that much as a guitarist, unless you love hearing the same blues riffs OVER and OVER and OVER.

Gimme Roth-era Edward and his 10 fingers and 6 strings any day of the week……that was PURE GENIUS HARD AT WORK.

  • Nat

“Using that logic, Happy Birthday is a better song than Unchained”

    Isn’t it? ;-)

These lists will never make everyone here happy unless VH took all top 10 spots, and then we’d argue about the order of those.

Looks like a reasonable list to me. It’s not the top 50 best guitarists, top 50 most technical solos, or anything like that, just the top 50 solos. You could have a solo by a mediocre guitarist in a great song and it would be more meaningful than something by a great guitarist in a mediocre song.

  • RR

The STH solo is in a class by itself. Kind of like trying to compare DLR to other frontmen.

For once, I think they finally got a Top 10 list right.

  • johnny5150

I’m glad that they gave Eddie his props, but seriously, he should be number one. And no RANDY RHOADS? Gimme a break.

  • chriso

STEVE HUNTER AND DICK WAGNER from Lou Reed also played excellent solos on “Under My Wheels” from “The Alice Cooper Show” live album from late ’70′s-early ’80′s…

  • http://vhnd.com nautica5150

Man if only Live DVD solos counted as well, I would put Eddie’s solo during “5150″ from Live without a Net up there to anything and anyone. “Summer Nights” from that same concert comes in a close 2nd…

  • ringostore

He only got 3 out of 50? What a joke! Should be at least 10 of his songs in that 50.

Plus they always pick the popular tunes or the top 40 songs with a good solo.

There was great and outstanding solos in less popular songs. Come on Gibson, listen to more music or side b?

There is also a lot of guitar players without a name known that played great….guitar player from the Knack, Twilight Zone, Pat Benetar husband on most of her songs….

    Pathetic list Gibson!

I guess this is why I’m a strat man like Ed, not a low action Gibsonhead.

  • Tom

Jimmy Page is a great guitarist and in Guitar world in 1988 Eddie said he actually plays more like Page than Clapton in that he has a reckless, play from the gut approach to music. My personal favorite from Page is “Ten Years Gone”,but its only a list.To each their own.At least “Eruption” is #2.Both are my favorite guitarists and if either song was switched around they both still belong in the top 2 spots. What put a huge smile on my face was “Purple Rain”.A very underrated guitarist and solo.Prince is without a doubt one of the best guitarists who never gets respect for his contributions to music

  • Dooley

    nautica5150

true dat !!! “Live Without a Net” was one of the Van Halen’s peaks, for sure.

  • Van Foot

After listening to a bunch of Van Halen over the years, I would have to say that the Hot For Teacher solo is one of Ed’s best, even better than Eruption. While Eruption defined Eddie’s style and changed the way people looked at the instrument, Eddie’s playing on Hot For Teacher is spectacular. If the song wasn’t so silly and tongue and cheek (thanks Dave) people may have taken Ed’s playing more seriously on this tune. Remember the video? I think Ed hated doing that bravado Diamond Dave bullshit.

Alex and Ed looked hammered during the video, spinning at the wrong time and some forgettable dancing. I can see why Ed tired of Dave in the early days. The whole Waldo thing was great, and the longest table(s) in guitar solo history, but the dancing and Dave as the most popular game show host…give me a break. Markings of Dave’s solo career and future videos are very obvious in HFT.

  • http://vhnd.com nautica5150

    Dooley, amen to that brotha!!

  • Jeff

@johnny5150: “And no RANDY RHOADS? Gimme a break.”

    11) Crazy Train – Randy Rhoads
    17) Mr. Crowley – Randy Rhoads

I agree that there could be more, but he wasn’t left off completely.

  • patrick

    damn joe..chill out,i was just kidding (geez)…lol
