New VH: What Do YOU Want to Hear?

The guitar tone freak at WoodyTone wrote a list of the type of sounds he’d love to hear on a new Van Halen album. Check out his list below and chime in by posting a comment telling what types of sounds YOU would like to hear from Eddie and the boys!

New VH: What Do You Want to Hear?

Here’s My List!

VH4_08_1

My 8-year-old son makes me listen to only Van Halen and Led Zep in the car (he’s a good kid!), so to keep it interesting I started to pick out some highlights of Dave-era VH albums – and wondered, wouldn’t it be cool to have some of these things on the new VH album. So here they are in album order. Chime in below with what you’d dig.

I’m the One speed
FAST boogie-type riff, almost unbelievably fast. Can Ed still fly at this speed with those 54-year-old muscles and fingers? Even though he kinda struggled with this tune on the last tour, I’m voting yes.

Runnin’- and Ain’t Talkin’-type simple solos
Solos that are simple, memorable, not real fast. Ed’s note choices are so out of the norm that these are real interesting. He’d kind of moved on from this after the first album, be nice to hear some of it again.

Dance the Night Away mass appeal
Everyone knows this song – everyone of a certain age, that is. How about another feel-good, California sunshine, fun, almost-poppy tune like this. Fun to play too.

Outta Love Again drums
SICK drumming. Go Al! Let’s see more of it! (Also one of my favorite guitar solos ever.)

Light Up the Sky tough-to-sing-over tune
Whenever someone tells me Sammy is a better singer than Dave, my response is, “Maybe so, but Dave can sing over anything.” How would you like to come up with melodies to sing over early VH riffs? This is a prime example. So how ’bout a kick-a** riff that most mortals could not sing over?

[Women and Children First note – This isn't a favorite album for a lot of folks, but it is for me. Just some crazy playing, great variety – sort-of-blues taken to the maximum level.]

Cradle Will Rock simplicity
A relatively simple tune with a great pounding groove.

Loss of Control speed
Wow! The whole band gets an F1 for this.

Take Your Whiskey Home
Can there be a sicker rock-blues tune? Getting chills just thinking about it….

In a Simple Rhyme drums
Another example of Al’s immense riffing musicality, just like his bro. More, Al!

i don’t think these guys have it anymore. period. they lost the magic years years years ago! with a band like this, they should have been bigger than Kiss, U2, etc… atleast 15 albums or so. tons of dvd’s, greatests hits, and tons of merch, but for some strange reason, they never accomplished it and never will at this age. so IF they put out a new album in 2011, i think it’s going to be a a cross between 96 and 08 sounding.

For heaven’s sake, stop whining about Mikey. Give it a rest.

    Pete says:

That ” new song” was actually called “BABYS ON FIRE” its off A lil aint enough , a great song Jason Becker was on guitar , its a classic , but like a lot of dave solo stuff its gone unoticed

I would love to hear some of those old outtakes like Big Trouble, Down in Flames and Believe Me retooled on the new album. Down in Flames is such a cool VH tune, better than using the riff on You’re No Good IMO.

What do I want to hear??? ANY FUCKING THING!!!!!! More of the raw sound like the “Man on a Silver Mountian” clip on youtube. It would be so awesome to have Mikey involved in any way on the new project, but Ed and Al will never let that happen, which is sad. Wolfie is a good player, but doesn’t have Mike’s vocal range or overall stage personna. And the fans want to see Dave, Al, Ed, and Mike. But will never happen, which sucks.

  • Bridge

How about the tune from the ’77 new years eve boot- “Here’s Just What You Wanted”
    Fitting, no?

  • Rocko

    Unchained!!!!

    food for thought:

dave: short or long hair in 2011
    ed: short or long hair
alex: short or long hair or the same
    wolf: short or long hair

  • bbl70

Yeah Bridge. That is a great one too. Let’s Get Rockin is another cool one too. I am very curious to see if the put some of those old out takes on the album. She’s the Woman, Babe Don’t Leave Me Alone and Put Out The Lights are great out takes as well.

  • Let’s Rock

    You are joking?
The fans want to hear Dave, Eddie, Alex and Mike knocking out the Van Halen sound, new and old.
Anything else is a waste of our time and their effort.
It does not get any easier than that!
Which means, it will never happen.
Eddie, if you are reading this, yea right, if you have another Van Halen III on your mind, retire.
Since the VH III doesn’t show up on your web site, nor on VHND, we agree about it’s place in the Van Halen library.

A good parallel was when Rick Rubin produced the latest Metallica album. He told them to make it sound like a follow-up to Master of Puppets. And lo and behold, it pretty much erased 15 years of dreck they’d been putting out with Bob Rock.

I want someone to force Eddie to realize what got him here in the first place.
