VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Warner/Chappell Music says Van Halen will have an album out next year!

UPDATE: The press release shown below has been completely removed from the Warner/Chappell website.

Van Halen has extended their agreement with Warner/Chappell Music, which is an American music publishing company, and a division of the Warner Music Group. The press release is below. The most important part to Van Halen fans is the very last sentence of the release:

“The group is currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011.”

Where is this news coming from? This news is NOT coming from the band. It originated on the Warner/Chappell Music website yesterday.

Does this mean Van Halen will definitely release an album next year? Not necessarily.

On the positive side of things, a division of Warner Music Group is saying that Van Halen will have an album out next year, so that’s (yet another) great sign!

But on the negative side, Warner/Chappel got some basic facts about Van Halen wrong in their story, so one could question what they are basing their “new album” statement on. Are they basing it on the band’s actual plans, or did an intern simply google the latest news on the band and end up adding a mere rumor to their press release? Hopefully a new Van Halen album will come to fruition and it will turn out that they were right.

Van Halen remains silent. VHND emailed Janie Van Halen today asking for a statement, but they aren’t talking.

The press release:

Warner/Chappell Music has extended its administration agreements with two original members of the legendary rock band VAN HALEN, Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Under the agreement, Warner/Chappell will continue to administer their catalog of works.

The Grammy Award-winning VAN HALEN was formed in 1972 in Pasadena, California and released its first album in 1978, quickly becoming one of the most influential rock bands in history. In 2007, after more than three decades dazzling audiences with their energetic performances and establishing their catalog of songs as one of the most enduring in the history of popular music, VAN HALEN was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

With 11 studio albums, VAN HALEN is the 19th best-selling group of all time in the U.S., according to the RIAA, with more than 56 million albums sold in the U.S., 10 of them certified platinum or multi-platinum, six albums that reached No. 1 on The Billboard 200 and two of them, “Van Halen” and “1984?, achieving diamond certification. VAN HALEN has been nominated multiple times by the American Music Awards and, in 1992, won “Favorite Heavy Metal/Rock Album” for the album “For Unlawful Carnage Knowledge”.

“It’s fantastic to continue our relationship with VAN HALEN, which is one of the most enduring and successful partnerships within our roster of songwriters,” said Scott Francis, President, Warner/Chappell Music, and Chairman and CEO, Warner/Chappell Music U.S. “Since its inception, VAN HALEN has written driving melodic rock songs performed in groundbreaking style.”

During its more than three decades as a band, VAN HALEN has featured a number of different lineups and three different lead singers, and throughout has produced a string of multiplatinum albums that contained numerous No. 1 singles, including “Jump”, “(Oh) Pretty Woman”, “Why Can’t This Be Love?”, “Humans Being”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Me Wise Magic”.

Most recently, the band toured with founding brothers, Eddie and Alex Van Halen, its original lead singer, David Lee Roth, and Eddie’s son, Wolfgang, playing bass. The group is currently in the studio recording an album with Roth that is due for release in 2011.

wow I remember when I had my first beer! Roger! You type like how I feel, I don’t know what the fuck you just said but Sammy and Mike are just liner notes now, Ed and Al have moved on but unlike Sam and Mike everytime they are interviewed they always have to talk about VH, Mike can do all the talkin he wants cause he was there from the begining and he has that right, Sammy on the other hand, being a lead singer has that diarrhea of the mouth! If it weren’t for VH there would be no chickenfoot(great band but sounds like VH lite) Bottom line the VH of old is done quit living in the past, get ready for the new stuff they are older and more seasoned and now have the LUXUARY of dictating what they want to do, when they want to do it, and how they want to do it. The reward of 30 plus years of making great music that not only they are proud of, but that other people enjoy is that they can still do it but now on their own terms. And to all the people that say they owe us: really? what do they owe you? you got what you paid for. You paid xxx dolllars for a cd you got a cd not a promise for future cd’s, you paid xxx dollars for a concert you got the concert not future concerts. These are not down payments for future endevours. With VH you get what you pay for and I think I still owe them money! and you do too!

2011= KICK ASS ROCK N ROLL!!!!!!! For all you crappy bands out there who think you are rock stars, shit, you are going to get your asses handed to you by the Mighty VH and The Foot!!!!!! Sucks to be you!!!!!

  • Dr. Roth’s Wacky Son

I wish they would re-record the 1977 version of “House of Pain” that was on the infamous Gene Simmons demo and put it on the new album…..that rendition smoked ass!

  • Bluesbro

Chill Phill … plenty of room for both in my world. If you want to deprive yourself of awesome music out of some obscure sense of loyalty, well, your loss.

I think the pressure would all be on Van Halen to measure up. Wouldn’t it? They are the ones that went dark for a decade, and whose musical lynch pin has had to overcome all manner of issues. It all depends on Eddie.

Hey, I hope they both are great.

  • mikey

I’m from the I’ll believe it when I see it camp – how many reports over the years have there been that Eddie and Dave are working in studio together on new album. Let’s just say the VH catalog would be double in size if any of those reports were true.

These days I’m just not sure how much into playing/writing music Eddie is these days. It took Wolfie to give him a reason to even go out on tour or else he never would have even done that.

  • Stevo

I saw VH on the very last date of their 2008 tour in Grand Rapids. Up to this point (not including their Tiger Woods event) I’ve been able to say that I’ve seen their last concert ever.

I will believe this news when I see it. Until then I contend that I’ll have seen the very last concert from VH, ever. Something I’ll be able to tell my grandchildren.

  • bbl70

Does anyone think there will be any covers on the album? I am thinking probably not. I would love to hear some of the old outakes redone on this release

  • bub

    1981 Oakland…….2011……..30 year anniversary edition dvd……hmmmmmm…………I can dream, can’t I??

  • Jeff

Right on bub!!! It does make sense, doesn’t it??

  • jeff

(((“Warner/Chappell Music has extended its administration agreements with two original members of the legendary rock band VAN HALEN, Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Under the agreement, Warner/Chappell will continue to administer their catalog of works.”

Does this mean Mike Dave and Sammy have different agreements?? Certainly they still get royalties from past albums. If Dave is in the band why is he not part of this agreement?? )))

MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY!!! Questions that may never be answered.

June 2, 2008: Grand Rapids, MI – Van Andel Arena
July 3, 2008: Quebec City, QC – Plains of Abraham

Stevo: At this rate, if and when they do decide to tour again, you’ll be able to take the grandkids with you. If not, you can tell them that gramps saw the last show in these United States. The Vegas/Woods shows were the last two of 2007.

  • Sandman

I think people are going to get their hopes up and to be only disappointed. When Eddie comes out and says it….then that will be final.
I would love to see M.A. back in the band but I think we all know that is not going to happen. But it would be nice then to get another bass player. I know Wolfie is his son but he plays bass like a guitar player and I hate that. CAN WE PLEASE HAVE A REAL BASS PLAYER??

  • YZ

If I had a son I would protect him from most people too. Rock can sure take a toll. Saying all that, I am really hoping for new music too. Go Dog Go.

  • roast and toast

new cd packaged with a live dvd of the last tour..i can dream ….

  • Dr. Roth’s Wacky Son

Edward is no longer the innocent, smiling cherub in the “Jump” video we all watched growing up in the 80?s….he’s become a rather grumpy hermit who doesnt possess the same passion for making innovative music like in his 20?s.

I think it would be a major blemish on the long career of the Mighty Van Halen if they only did reunion tours until their dying days. Eddie knows this, and I think his son Wolfie is the major motivating factor to produce at least one more album that will rock the world and blow our socks off. Ed seems to have pride as a father, and what kind of father wants to let down his son by being a washed up has-been?

Have faith, Van Halen Nation…..this new album will kick all our asses like the old days…..Dave has too much pride in what he does and Eddie wants to make his son proud…..those are the only two reasons we need to know that something very tasty in coming out in 2011.

ROCK ON, LOUD AND PROUD —- HALEN STYLE!!

  • DJ

    Relax Phil…
Yes VH will be more popular…will it be better? nobody knows yet! It’s been 26 years and only 3 of the original guys are back. I really hope they both kick a whole bunch of ass!

  • Tommy Boy

Jeff, Ed and Al ARE Van Halen. Wolfgang will probably be Van Halen in the future. Everyone else just gets a paycheck for their part.

  • http://www.digdeeperfitness.com David

I will treat this news like Brett Favre….when it happens it happens. I ain’t gonna count on shit.

  • bullittcrazy

They probably made the assumption from the rumor last month that was dismissed by the band. Hopefully I’m wrong and this is a solid piece of information. I’m curious to see where they go with a new album!! :)

  • Geddy Lee Roth

I’m with you SANDMAN…with all due respect to Wolfie, he simply waters the band down. GET MIKE or real bass player with some energy. Wolf should do his own thing with guys his own age…NEW MUSIC FROM VAN HALEN????? It would be nice. I just hope Ed locks down a solid tone and gives us some new jaw-dropping riffs. I always wished he would expand on his somewhat exhausted lead vocabulary or at least steer clear of the typical Eddie-isms. I want to be surprised by what he brings to the table (not that he owes me or anyone a damn thing)–love ya Ed just starving for some premium R&R

  • pete

i agree sandman,if mikes last name was van halen eddie would have said how awsome he is but since it isnt eddie deems him not good enough.as matter of fact if mike was a van halen and alex wasnt wolfie would be playing drums right now.

  • Thunder

    Good news if true.

Looking forward to some new tunes.

Would be even better if they announced Mike was back too…

    CVH>VHIV

  • Matt from Australia

It’s good news, but not exactly a 100% confirmation for me. Even if the band do announce that they are recording a new album, things could still go pear-shaped, and the fans will be left empty handed! I’m not planning on getting excited about listening to new music until I have that disc in my paws!

  • Tony Taylor

Am I the only one that has absolutely no faith or hope in this materializing? We have heard this shit for years ( literally ). I love VH to death, but they haven’t produced shit in years and Ed keeps telling us about all the music he has. It is getting to be insulting. I have given up on the Cubs after 36 years this year, I think VH is like the Cubs. The best fans, that keep getting shit on.

Something tells me this will be another greatest hits with 1-2 new songs, if history repeats itself Gary Cherone will sing those 1-2 songs.

  • halenhagar

I think it’s going to be another Greatest Hits album with three songs from Roth and some live stuff from the 2007-08 tour.
{Live: Right Here, Right Now kisck MF ASS “Won’t Get Fooled Again” Judgement Day” etc. !!!! )

I will beleive it when the the Van Halen Brothers put out a press release!!!

  • Dooley

C’mon Janie, Mrs. Van Halen, from the Public Relations division of the organization…

    say something!!

  • rbl

    It’ll never happen.

  • Pat

sandman is right, they need to get a capable bass player like anthony instead of hooking up family members.

  • Simon from Switzerland

I really hope for all of us that this is true !

Keep your fingers crossed (…but not too much, we’re many guitarists here…)

  • Julian, Ricky & Bubbles

The next Guitar Player magazine article should read like this:

“So Eddie, though the music is totally new, your new album takes us back in time and tone to some of the earlier days of Van Halen, say the guitar sound of the first four albums. Is that your new Fender 5150 amps? It sounds incredible…”

“No man, it’s just the Fender head case with a Metropoulos 12,000-series Plexi Replica chassis stuck in there. Wolfie bought me one for father’s day and I haven’t been able to stop playin’ it… It’s just incredible… It actually sounds better than my old precious early Marshall that I always used… I’m thinking about endorsing it, but George tells me he doesn’t do endorsements, so I had to actually buy several of them. I bought a ’66 JTM-style, a ’67 Super Lead-style, the ’68 I already mentioned, and I also had him make me a metal-faced ’69 Super Lead-style too. I really can’t think of using or touring with anything else…”

  • PlexiRev

We will not ever hear “new” VH material–unless it’s stuff from the vault, from whatever era, Roth/Hagar or even Cherone. Let’s face it–the BOWB “songs” tell a much more powerful story than most of us are willing to admit: Eddie is finished. His interviews even sound like he’s got Alzheimer’s–he keeps the saying the same things again and again.

  • roast and toast

this cd, when we get it, will be a masterpeice.ed still has something in the tank,it will be worth the wait.plus, warner says that roth/halen are currently working on an album…its been a couple years since the tour,if their still together at this point, its gonna happen…

  • Daniel

Im so excited for the great news from Van helen

  • Gee Lopz

“VHND emailed Janie Van Halen today asking for a statement, but they aren’t talking.”

My dear friends, We got to face the truth: “they aren´t talking”!!! AGAIN!… and again and again…

I`m a Die Hard Van Halen fan, but we got to stay on the real! The truth is: Alex and Eddie don´t give a shit for us, the fans!!

Why they aren´t talking?? Even to say NO!????

I love Dave Lee Roth, I love the original line-up, I love the VH music…but i don´t trust in Eddie & Alex anymore…

It´s sad, but it´s true. They don´t care about us!!

They just DON´T WANNA do a new record!! Period!!

  • Eric

Look what happened the last time they tried to go public with recroding with Dave. It resulted in a large public blowout and fued. I think it is smart for them to not comment publicly until the recrod is done.

  • VH3

    awesome news

  • nicktx

Umm… Is it just me overlooking it or has Warner/Chappell removed the VH article from its website???

  • Let’s Rock

And the BS keeps on coming!!
A single, please. An album(CD, MP3), please. Some shread of proof, please.
Ain’t fallin’ for any media crap ever again.
Until a suitable replacement comes along, I’ll stick to my previously recorded VH(minus VHIII)and the new Chickenfoot.
I’ll admit that Chickenfoot is like drinking non-alcoholic brew, but at least I’m drinking!!
    The Nation waits

  • Hugh

While very interested in how this turns out, I’m not going to hold my breath. It won’t be classic VH due to MA not being in the band. WVH CANNOT replace MA other than providing a bass. MA’s vocals were a huge part of the VH sound. Believe me, I wish I were more optimistic about this, but I’m going to hold the “wait and see” approach.

  • phillster

    “CHILL PHILL”?
Funny how you can tell a”VHGR”fan from
the rest of the rational world.
    Nobody`s “missing out” by
Recognizing the FACT that a ROTH=VH=album&tour
Is Way more”Bang for Buck” than
    CHKNFT.
    The Whole World knows it.
    Wake up.

  • Michael C.

Man, people just continue to bitch on this site. Some people won’t be happy until their doorbell rings and Dave and Eddie walk into there homes and start playing the new stuff in their living rooms. Take it easy, guys. We’ve waited this long…the waiting seems to be almost over.

  • Ant G

Hope it’s better than Chinese Democracy!

  • dirtyfacedkidinagarbagecan

    I was re-reading an EVH interview from guitarist mag from 97 the other day and one thing ed said really stood out. He was talking about the time it took to write the 2 tracks for the best of vol 1;

“…you can’t write something for Dave, it has to come from him.”

  • Getchabite

Official statement from Ed and Alex confirming on Yahoo home page.

  • redarrow5150

Yep that’s what I figured everytime Chicken Foot announces a tour or album there’s the VH rumor of recording a new album. Hmmmm wasn’t in JUNE OF 2009 we heard about an something for 2010?

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

  • http://VHND HIKER MAN

THE LOCAL NEWS IN ARIZONA SAID VAN HALEN IS IN THE STUDIO RECORDING NEW MUSIC

  • Matteau23

Pat your point is well taken, but realistically Eddie is going to play bass on any new album that comes out. And while he’s certainly a more than capable bassist, I think its more the backing/harmony vocals that are the issue.

Eddie can’t sing anymore (not that he was ever great). But in my opinion the real reason VHIII wasn’t up to par was the fact that MA didn’t sing background on almost all of the songs. Granted Gary could harmonize with himself (Roth most certainly can’t), but that to me is what changed the sound of the band so much on that album.
