Fan video for “Jump”

Tuesday, 13 July 2010

This video of Van Halen’s “Jump” was produced by Church by the Glades located in South Florida. They are in the middle a message series called “I Love the ’80′s”. During the series, their Pastor is using ’80′s pop culture as metaphors for teaching points. Some of the 80′s icons being used throughout the series includes the Rubik’s Cube, the A-team, Famous 80s Dads, and, yes, Van Halen!

The “Jump” video piece was supported by a live performance of the song during their weekend services. The weekend the video was used, Pastor David Hughes spoke on the topic of baptism. He told the congregation that he believes baptism should be a celebration of their faith in Christ and that, “you’d might as well JUMP” and do it.

  1. Tim says:

Lip-syncing for Jeebus. Awesome. “Hey, you know what reminds me of baptism? That song about a suicidal jumper sung by the Jewish guy who did tons of blow and banged half the women in the U.S. in the 80′s! We should use that.”

  2. fanboy says:

These guys are horrible, but the idea is pretty cool. Much better than the original video.

  3. K. Reyoch says:

It’s no secret that Van Halen has broad appeal: Gleeks, John 5, Dweezil Zappa, folks at this forum, Christians (those whose faith centers on Jesus Christ), *insert long list of others…. All get tickets when VH comes to town. All are waiting for a new album.

I like what Church by the Glades attempts and without a single harp, hand bell or pipe organ.

Their guitarist is talented: he doesn’t need to sync anything VH.

  4. chris b. says:

I guess Tim can’t see what they mean.

    He should probably JUMP!

  5. right here i say says:

Nobody wants to see that guy play keyboards, he’s a guitar hero.

With that said, the keyboardist obviously never played the keyboard before.

  6. Mark Sachs says:

Amen! Rockin out for Jesus! Nothing wrong with that because it is yet another example of how the band’s music impacts and cuts across different groups. I am sure that we all would be surprised to find out some of the different people and groups who have gelled with Van Halen’s music over the years.

Speaking of church and the like, does anybody know what church Big Al got ordained through? I mean was it a specific denomination where he actually had to take classes and training or was it one of those deals where you send a place $29.95 and Ta Da you’re an ordained minister? Just curious.

  7. Scott says:

Pretty cool. Very good to see the church looking around and trying to become relevant. I say good job, guys. Christians are in this world too and we all sit in church with a world of experiences outside of those walls. The mighty VH has touched me for years, why not incorporate them in any lesson or sermon? For any Christian to deny their God-given talent is an afront to the God that we are all there to worship! “Tons of blow” or not! :)

  8. TheTruthHurts says:

    Well said, Scott.

  9. Grover says:

Not bad. Now, let’s get the original line up to redo it either in a pool or jumping out of a plane.

  10. BubbaCo says:

Now, let us bow our heads in prayer and ask our heavenly father for a new GOD DAMN VH album.

    Religion is so stupid.

  11. djr5899 says:

My only comment is, why oh why did he just ruin his Frankenstrat by jumping in the pool with it.

  12. nicktx says:

What we want: An expertly crafted four-course meal filled with intricate flavors to satisfy the discriminating palate.

What we were just given: stale bubblegum

  13. djr5899 says:

….but then I got a better look at the guitar later in the video….it should be left at the bottom of the pool, permanently. Horrible “replica”.

  14. crystal dawn says:

I remember going to a Baptist summer church camp in the 80′s. They sat all of us in a room and told us that rock n’ roll was the devil’s music. Said ‘Jump’ meant suicide, that “Thriller” meant the devil and “Every Breath You Take” meant murder.

  15. Steve says:

    That’s cool.

  16. Madison says:

    lame….!

  17. Grover says:

Give them a break. No budget, done for their church… It’s pretty good for what it was intended to be.

  18. VH2008 says:

    Very cool! Good job, guys.

  19. B-Rad says:

I loved the jumping in the pool stuff.
Why be so harsh, they were having fun, and it looked fun.
    God Bless the mighty VH

  20. dv5150 says:

How ironic. In 1984 I attended a Christian school in 7th grade, and this kid in my class put at Van Halen poster in our P.E. locker room that said “Jump” on it. He was forced to take it down because it did not uphold the good “Christian” ethical lifestyle, and insinuated suicide, and devil worship. Jesus Christ man. SOOOOO glad times have changed a wee bit.

  21. pushtoshove says:

That was actually fun, clever and good spirited…Somebody give those guys a record deal!!!

  22. Matteau23 says:

..and now back to videos like this and nostalgia articles for the next 6 months

  23. ME!! says:

Tim, you’re a jackass. It’s amazing how much you think you know. Too bad you don’t.

And what’s with all the people who apparently don’t believe in Jesus being the Son of God referring to him as “Jeebus”? What? You can’t say or type his name? I thought you didn’t believe in him? What’s the harm then of using his name? Not only are you disrespectful of another human being (Jesus was human when he was here), but you disrespect everyone who does believe.

Well, I guess it just goes to prove one thing. The Bible states that Satan and his minions hate the name of Jesus. Sounds like you could use a little “soul cleansing”. They can’t stand it. Which would explain why you can’t say it. You’re filled with them.

By the way, Tim…Jesus loves you. Whether you like it or not.

Spreading the Word of God using Van Halen’s music is a wonderful idea.

God bless these guys and God bless Van Halen for creating some great music!!

  24. andrzej 52 says:

    super !!!!

  25. Karma Wheel says:

All I could think of while watching that was a sign I remember seeing at a campground swimming pool when I was a kid. The sign said “This is our swimming ool. Notice there is no P in it. Lets keep it that way”

  26. Kevin says:

    Lame. very lame.

  27. Jump says:

crystal dawn: And they were correct, which is why all of those songs are way better than Baptist church camp.

ME!!: Yikes, calm down a bit. It’s okay for people to have different beliefs than you. He had a point.

  28. alexandre says:

Do not give wrong ideas to Eddie, or maybe the next Van Halen album will be a gospel one…

  29. Dante says:

“ME” – Tim was right to identify the absurdity of using VH in a so-called church. Baptism is holy; VH is secular. Whether VH or Sinatra, it has no place in Christian worship. That “church” isn’t “relevant,” they’re just like the world… and I’m sure they know more about music than the Bible.

I wish vhnd didn’t post this “news.”

  30. Ken says:

Awesome! And I agree. Those guys may have been lip synching for the video, but if you search you tube, you’ll see them doing it live. Obviously, playing instruments underwater are a little harder than you’d think which probably leads you to believe these guys aren’t real musicians. But if you search “church by the glades” on you tube, you’ll see them rocking out all over the place!

  31. bsc says:

I just have to throw in, who is it that decides what is and is not secular… Anything can be turned into something that does good. Whether its “Jump” or Whatever. It’s all about the heart that’s behind it. Just saying that to me it’s a very closed view to say something can or can not be used for the good of God. I mean who would of ever thought one of Jesus’ closest followers would be a hooker.. But it happened. I mean would we even allow her the chance to do that today? For most of us “christians” No. It’s a shame that we let such good things in life go, like Rock and Roll, just because they have a different title than what we somehow feel obliged to deem suitable. Just my opinion. Anyhow, Long live Van Halen. I hope God does bless you guys and His face is visible in your next album. Can’t hurt to pray for a van halen album right? : ) lol

  32. blindbubbacheeks says:

    Well said, bsc, well said.

I was raised a Christian who was not allowed to listen to “secular” music. The very first record I ever bought with my own money was “1984″. My Dad made me get rid of it because he didn’t like the smoking Angel on the cover.

In my adult life, I’m the Worship Leader at my local Church. I sing and play guitar and I’m covered in tattoos. I wear my VH shirts to church whenever possible. My wife (the Pastor’s daughter) and I are also the Youth Pastors at our church. Everyone there knows I have an almost unhealthy obsession with VH, hahah.

I guess my point in writing all of this is: Not all Christians are judgmental, narrow-minded, Republican, fairy-tale believing, tight-assed people with a bad taste in Music. A lot of us are people who try to live good lives, believe in a higher power who loves us unconditionally, and LOVE THE HELL OUT OF VAN HALEN!!!!

    VAN HALEN > STRYPER

God Bless everyone on the VHND!

  33. Fonso Sanabria says:

RITE ON ! Keep the faith…as there are those of us whom have along the way, bless you guys for making me smile !!!!

  34. Phil says:

Bubba Co, I’m with ya bro.

  35. Phil in Minneapolis says:

Keep religion out of my Rock ‘n Roll!

  36. Atomic Pete says:

    Hot For Preacher?

    Ouch!

    OK that was bad. Sorry.

  37. the joker says:

hey come on, they’re the opening band for the Van Halen 2010-2011 World Tour.

  38. ringostore says:

Please don’t put anything like that on again.

    Christian…..ridiculous and heresy.

These people, band group or whatever…..cheese flavor gum that has been in the glove compartment for 2 years.

  39. Pete says:

Awesome! As an electric guitar player, VH fan and current worship leader, this kicks butt on the fun meter! To those who don’t know, the church actually has some incredible quality music nowadays. Check out Lincoln Brewster’s song “Let Your Glory Shine” on iTunes. He toured with Journey’s Steve Perry on his tour when “Oh Sherrie” was a hit, and he RIPS on the Strat!

  40. Johnnyh says:

Just checked out the those youtube videos very cool !!! That’s my kind of church.

  41. fanboy says:

Ken, thanks for the links. I’ve changed my mind after watching them performing live. These guys are not horrible – they really kick ass!!!

  42. blindbubbacheeks says:

Lincoln Brewster is a monster guitar player!

  43. dude says:

    That’s your 15 minutes. Next!

  44. Towers McQuestion says:

My thoughts: I HATE religion but I don’t discount the possibility of God existing. That makes me a proud agnostic. That being said, I disavow all organized religion… ALL. That means Christianity, Islam, Jewish, whatever. It has led to so much war, hatred and bigotry that I can’t abide it. Plus, I don’t think Jesus ever existed. I think it’s ironic that the church will use this music to help recruit young people when at the time of the record coming out, music like this was considered blasphemy. It just shows how ridiculously made up as it goes along the whole thing is. They’ll do and use ANYTHING to keep the collection plates full.

About the video itself: I thought it was kind of fun. My band had pretty much the exact same idea for a video once for one of our songs but the funding didn’t come through. It’s got more character than the original. It’s harmless enough and I find it ironic that the singer looks more like Sammy Hagar than Dave. ;)

  45. lucky5150 says:

sooo those of you who dislike this… are saying you cant love GOD, AND VH!!.. and that if a christian happens to love Rocking out on guitar, he can’t get into heaven?!!?.. COME ON!!, jesus himself used parables to teach people back in his days, whats wrong with using relevant topics that connect people today!, i personally know of a guy who HATED all churches, then went to this one, and loved it because its so REAL and relevant!, this church is in place to reach a group of people who wont listen any other way, and if we get to listen to VAN HALEN in church in order to do so, i say GO GOD!! …

and for any of you who bash the musicianship of this church based on them performing underwater lol! check out there live stuff on youtube, (starting here)

  46. Once Far Off says:

Great video. Great band. Great church. I’d like to see what the haters posting here do with their lives. I imagine not too much.

  47. Bro-dtheroa-d says:

Man do I wish I could move back to south Florida. I miss going to church by the glades. They have a way with taking secular music and applying Gods word to it in a way no one could imagine. From All American Rejects to Weezer to the great Van Halen. These guys definitely know how to rock out for Jesus!

  48. Jump says:

“You’re not making Christianity cooler, you’re just making rock ‘n’ roll worse!” –Hank Hill

  49. Hokey Pokey says:

WOW – I’d love to see this on Lopez Tonight! It’s my source of truth for all things Van Halen!

  50. Skutch says:

Wow, such close mindedness from the VH choir. These guys are making a video for their church (for fun) and they are called heretics, lame, stupid, etc. Intense. Jesus was right when he said, “men will hate you because of me.”

Towers, you’re so cliche, it’s embarassing. Sorry.

  51. Van Longview says:

Better than the original. Such commitment!
