Van Halen Star Guitar

By Dweezil Zappa

From Dweezil Zappa World:

VH Star

This guitar comes with a great story. Picture this if you will. It’s 1982 and the biggest rock band in the world is VAN HALEN. I was 12 years old and had only been playing guitar for 9 months. “Eruption” and the “Mean Street” intro were on a constant loop in my head. I was signed up to play at my school talent show. It was coming up in a week. I was going to play “Running With The Devil” with my little teenage rocking combo.

In the days before the show we received a phone call at our house from a guy claiming to be Edward Van Halen. My mom answered the phone and talked with him for a bit. She whispered to me, “This guy says he’s Eddie Van Halen, pick up the other phone and listen to see if you think it really is.” Of course I jumped for the other phone extension and quietly picked it up. I heard a gritty voice on the other end talking about wanting to come over and meet Frank Zappa. I had no reference of the sound of Edward Van Halen’s voice except for the possible long shot audio clip from “Unchained” where a voice is heard saying, “Come on Dave, give us a break.” I thought maybe that was Edward’s voice, or maybe it was Ted Templeman’s voice? It didn’t matter. I wanted it to be Edward Van Halen so I said to Gail, “It’s him… it has to be him!”

Frank picked up the phone and talked for a short time. He hung up the phone saying, “Okay I’ll see you in a few minutes.” 20 minutes later Edward Van Halen was at our house. He had a new guitar with him. A purple Kramer with a piece of tape covering the logo. Frank called Steve Vai and asked him to come over. What followed as the coolest night a 12 year old guitar player could ever imagine, or perhaps any guitar player. Edward Van Halen, Steve Vai, and Frank Zappa all passed around this new purple guitar. Occasionally I would fumble around on it as well.

Many things were played and discussed. It was amazing. Of course I asked Edward to play “Mean Street” and “Eruption”. He did and I got to watch it up close. The techniques he employed were burned into my brain forever. This jam session/discussion went on into the wee hours of the morning. somewhere around 3AM. I had a little league game at 7am. Even though I had pitched a no hitter the week before, I knew that night that baseball was no longer that important to me.

Anyway, getting back to the star guitar. On the day of the talent show I was heading to my sound check. We got another call from Edward. It was mentioned that I was playing “Runnin’ With The Devil” at my school talent show. He actually decided he wanted to see that. He came to the sound check at my school! ( That was insane…kids found out and bolted out of class to see if it was true. He was a super hero and he was right there at school) While I was playing 2 things happened. First He corrected a wrong chord that I was playing. He stood behind me and actually played the guitar while it was around my neck and showed me what I was doing wrong. The he said, “This guitar won’t stay in tune, let me get you another one.” He drove home and came back with the star guitar you see above!

At that time it looked quite different. It was originally a Kramer that was cream colored with an orange lightning bolt shooting across the middle. I played the show with that guitar and it did stay in tune better than my Strat. I offered it back to him but he told me I could keep it. I was amazed that he had done what he had done. I’m not sure he had any idea what kind of impact he had made on me.

He kept in touch with Frank a lot during that time. Frank mentioned that he was going to be recording me for fun soon and somehow Edward ended up in the producers seat. I honestly don’t remember how that went down. Maybe Frank asked him if he would like to do it or maybe Edward offered. Either way, a few weeks later we actually recorded “My Mother Is A Space Cadet” at the UMRK studio. I used that guitar for the recording sessions. Over time that guitar has had a few modifications. I stuck a whole bunch of weird rubber faces on it when I took it to Europe. I used it on stage that way when Frank invited me to play with him at the Hammersmith Odeon. A recording of that performance exists as does some home video shot by Thomas Nordegg, but I digress… The next thing that happened was the paint job.

I used the Van Halen painting method and taped off areas. I painted it the way you currently see it now. It’s had preamps installed and removed. It’s got a different neck than the original. It’s fallen off of Thomas Nordegg’s scooter into on coming traffic – WITHOUT being in a case! It has some nice scars from that experience.

Anyway it’s a big part of my youth and it always reminds me of the excitement of playing guitar.

In closing I would like to share with you that Edward Van Halen did another remarkable thing for me. Perhaps the most important act of kindness I’ve experienced in my life. He was the very first person to call our house when the news of Frank’s passing hit the media airwaves. It was around 5am. He called and offered to see if there was anything he could do for us and said he was free to spend some time with me over the next few days if I would like to do that. He probably has no idea how important that was to me, and I’ve never had the opportunity all these years later to properly thank him for that. It was the best possible thing to take my mind off of the grief I was experiencing at that time. (Let me tell you, that doesn’t go away either).

  • Jay Krieger

That was a cool story. I wonder what the deal was with the purple Kramer? Maybe an early prototype. Thanks to Dweezil for sharing that.

  • http://www.loveKraft.de Adrian

Some people talk about “asshole-brothers”, others know different…….whatever.
Anyway, thumbs up to Dweezil Zappa for sharing this moving story with us.
I’d really love to read more news like this on vhnd.

Kind regards to all of ya (from FINALLY SUNNY Bavaria),
    Adrian

P.S.: The animosity between current/former members of VH that’s spread in the media (including vhnd) really pisses me off, so I say: DO NOT LET THEM INFECT YOU WITH SENSELESS HATRED. It really kinda turns me into Rodney King and go “can’t we all just get along???”……..

  • Rockenvelop

    Great story, thanks for sharing.

  • DJ

Killer stuff. Ed is a pimp!

  • jim

Behind all the perceptions and the lack of really knowing all the facts and how he ticks, Ed is a class act.

  • Mitchell5150

I think that “I rest my case” should follow that story. Ed has had his ups and downs and may not have been cool all the time. During the reunion tour with Sammy, Ed brushed us off at soundcheck, while Mike and Alex hung out and signed autographs and answered questions. That almost broke me down. I’ve got faith in him. He really is a great person–I think he’s struggled to deal with some of his demons. Can’t wait to get another meet and greet and try it again.

  • kerndawg

    Awesome story.

  • Keith

Ahhh … the “Super Ed” we all remember and love and hope will return to us with killer new music & tour soon.

  • Handy Solo

NOW….this is the kind of press I enjoy reading. I am sick to death of the same old stories that get reprinted that, if you are a fan, we all know. This is fresh, interesting and wonderful view of Edward and his life and what he is like away from the spotlight. We all need more of this….oh, and new music of course.

  • Scott

Makes my story of peeing next to Gary Richrath in the Denver airport bathroom seem less cool.

  • iwannaberr

Gary Richrath is/was an awesome and underrated guitar player!!! Don’t discount your airport encounter. He didn’t tap his foot 3 times did he?

  • 5150nick

Thanks for sharing a great story about Ed.I am not sure how many of you remember this story but back in the 90′s a scam artist screwed a bunch of children in the hospital by telling a nurse that he was eddie and to send money or something along that line.Well somehow word got back to Ed and he went to the hospital and spent several hours with all the sick children.I myself like most of us have had my share of ups and downs, but I think Ed is a stand up guy for the things he’s done that most of it never makes the news.I also want to add that this web site has been a very enjoyable experience to visit everyday not just because of the vh news but the great people on here that are die hard fans such as myself.I wish I could afford to by Ed’s guitars but maybe someday he will make a line of guitars that everyday people can afford and I am sure they will sell.Again thank you to all on here for the great posts and for sharing great stories of the greatest band in the world in my opinion.Rock on my brothers and sisters.

  • J5150C

I dunno about you guys, but Ed is a human being, like the rest of us, and whenever we get up on the wrong side of the bed, you’re sure as hell to be accountable for being an asshole because it’s Monday or because you’re woman slept with her underwear on, or who the hell knows. More over, if you are a class act, you will be perceived as contrary to belief. What I’m trying to convey here folks is the fact that many of you come here and bash the shit out of Ed, as if you knew him and as if he owed you money or a new album or something along those lines, and forget that he’s a human being who’s had ups and downs like the rest of us. Grow the fuck up man cause this guy does not owe you diddly squat!! He’s an honest musician – can hear and feel it in his music – who enjoys his craft, regardless of whether he makes it commercially known or not. So to all the haters, are you a class act 24/7 or an asshole? Or hey, maybe a little of both 365 like the rest of us? We’re not perfect, we’re just “humans being”!

  • halenguy51

Hey im sure Sammy would do the same…..If you buy a case of tequilla from him first and some cd’s….and maybe some cash…you know for his time and all…………

  • =VH=OZ

Amazing story! No wonder a lot of Eddie’s peers at the time (VH’s peak!) hated him and never gave the credit and respect he rightfully deserved. Eddie is firstly an incredibly humble, gentle soul and respectful person. The guitar playing and music is something that he does for fun!! There’s no BS with EVH, thats why he’s the greatest ever guitarist of all time!! The music world said that no one will never change the guitar like Hendrix did when Hendrix passed away. WRONG!! KING EDWARD VAN HALEN arrived and changed the guitar forever!! EVH broke every rule in the book, he made his own rules!! No one back then and even today has come remotely close to what King Ed has done!! LONG LIVE KING EDWARD VAN HALEN!!!

  • scottt

Eddie rules. The same purple kramer he played when he jammed with Allan Holdsworth at G.I.T. back in the day. What a cool story!

  • The Booger Man

Nice Dweezil- I was 13 in ’82 and was equally fascinated by them. You were one lucky little dude to have experienced that. Speaking of 1982, do U remember that All VH CREEM MAG edition that came out on them? Full of great pics.

  • Aftershock

Why do I get the feeling there are a lot of stories out there like this that simply have never been told?

    Thanks for sharing this one.

  • Kevin

Ya know, I stopped drinking the EVH kool aid years ago, for good reason. Realize people, this story was from 1982, not 2010. Almost 30 years. Ed is, and has become a much different person over those years. Any of you been around alcoholics? They are not, kind, gentle, humble people. The are mean, vindictive, hateful assholes! Not all the time, but they are. EVH made me want to play guitar, I heve purchased every different EVH product, guitar, amps, effects, etc. since 82. Seen 56 VH shows in that time, every tour, several; states. I loved the guy, musically, but I have zero respect for him as a person the last 15 years. I always thought it was the singers fault over the years, but 2 members were there for every incarnation, EVH & AVH. EVH is not the angel many of you want him to be. He is a great talent, the best in my opinion. But talent doesn’t make you a great person, human. Sorry, I was wrong too.

  • Patrick

nice one Booger Man. I was 12 in 82′, and the only peek I had into the fantastical lives of Van Halen was by catching a rare play of the Oakland 81′ footage on MTV, or on the news stand via Circus magaizine or a special edition Creem, like you mentioned. I remember the day that Creem came out too…my black n’ white world went color! Sports went out the window and I bought a Ross four-track recorder, with the rainbow nobs and VU meters…been having fun, making music ever since. thanks VH!

  • OzzyVanHalen

Amazing looking guitar and great story!

  • iwannaberr

Back in ’82 I could have won State. If only coach would have put me in. I bet I could throw a football over that mountain!

  • MICAL VEE

Booger man,i hear ya! I picked up both editions of the VH creem specials back in the day and still have them. Killer stuff.

  • Panama Red

Very cool story. I don’t know about you,but if EVH ever gave me a guitar I would NEVER let anyone tote it around on a scooter, especially OUT OF THE CASE!! WTF!!

@5150nick – I do remember that sad story about the sick kids/hospital being taken advantage of by that grifter and what a cool thing Eddie did to make it up to them. I still have that newspaper clipping somewhere in a notebook of VH stuff.

    @ iwannaberr – niiiice….Uncle Rico.

  • Atomic Pete

Yeah I had that Cream too. I cut out most of the
pics for my wall. It had the awesome two page pull out
of the Fair Warning stage. Flaming gong, Ed with the
“unchained” guitar. AWESOME! =VH= Rule! YEAH THEY DO!

  • Joe

@Kevin, unfortunately I have been around alcoholics. A very dear friend was an extremely talented pianist. He played Carnegie Hall twice wit his jazz band.

Sober, he would give you the shirt off his back. When he was drunk, you’d want to kill him. Six years ago he was killed after threatening a cop with a knife.

My buddy never got over his demons, let’s all hope Eddie has.

    Rest in piece, Ron.

  • The Booger Man

@Patrick- Are U Dweezil? You mentioned some gear but I wouldn’t have understood that at the time but I’m sure you would have being in your Family and all. Cool.

@Mical Vee- I didn’t know they had “2″ All Vh CREEM MAGS out there. Maybe it slipped by me, but I doubt it.

  • ringostore

Ive seen this article before, really cool!

I bet Vai and VH when they met in Zappa’s living room, they didn’t like each other. Just a guess.

  • Simon

wow…what a great story…i’m speechless…i met dweezil in 1989, he’s such a fine guy, we all miss Frank and his crazy music,
    peace !
    Simon

  • Fonso Sanabria

Very cool story Mr. Zappa, thank you for sharing that, I tend to forget that there are moments when my personal heros (EHV) do have that side of them. As Frank Sr. once said: “…you are what you is”

    …Rite on, man !!

  • Adrian

Who is this Bavarian with my name!!??? Haha jk… Agreed though 100% There are so many stories like this and the only thing you can do is smile what a legend..

  • freddiegirl

Wow…awesome story! I love reading about things like this… :)

  • Scottso

    @Kevin: Spot on. I agree 100%

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G.

Very cool story from Dweezil. I had heard about Ed seeing the sick children in the hospital, but wasn’t aware that these children had been conned by a grifter and Ed had made up for it. Now that he is sober, maybe will will hear more stories like this. I have been guilty of writing some nasty posts about Ed not making music which I apologize for. And all we can do is be patient, and he will deliver something that will knock us all on our asses!!!

  • barry

this is a great story. okay, all you people with the “ed is a jerk” comments need to shut up.

  • The Booger Man

Back in 1981 I was watching TJ Hooker and the Love Boat and Fantasy Island on saturday night.

  • Shawn

It is very nice to hear the good things about somebody. I is amazing how everyone has an opion on people they don’t even know. This is good stuff!!! I hate reading anything on here about any of the celebrities that is negative. This is suppose to be a fan site. Let’s have more of this!

  • jayd

Im jealous of some of you guys, Being from the UK, we didnt even get a 4th tv channel till around 84 never mind mtv.
The only stuff we got to see was on album covers or posters.
VHs first ever gig was at my home town in 78, even if I knew about it, I dont think my mum would let me go as I was only 9.

  • John

Ed used to be such a great guy. Kevin’s post was right on target. Let’s hope he realizes his mistakes, apologizes to those he’s hurt and becomes the hero again that he once was to us..

  • http://vhnd Emery

  • Pardo

Dwezil mentioned that Ed was a super hero back then. You’re freakin right he was! I’d read or heard this story before and apparently Ed walked through the door with the green overalls from the Women and Children cover and the long hair. No doubt he even looked like a super hero.

If you’re a fan, you likely know of the bitterness Ed has spouted about former band mates in the press. He can come across as being vindictive. Yes, my opinion of him has declined over the years. But perhaps thats because my opinion of him was so high to begin with.

As for Ed pre ’85 – there’s never been a badder mofo on the planet and there never will be.

Jordan was born to play basket ball, Gretzky was born to play hockey and Ed was born to play guitar. Period.

  • ringostore

    Thats a good analogy Pardo!

  • Pellegrini Family

GOD bless Edward Van Halen for the talent he bestoed on this young person, throw a little on Zappa also!
