VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Video: Eddie Van Halen on Lopez Tonight

Two days ago the VHND was contacted by someone in the Van Halen camp that asked us to spread the news about a Van Halen-related segment that would be on the 100th Episode Celebration of the Lopez Tonight show the next day. We were given the impression that the VH segment would be more extensive than what it turned out to be.

The segment that aired showed Eddie noodling on guitar, congratulating George Lopez, and presenting him a signed Wolfgang. This segment was one of many short segments showing celebrities congratulating Lopez for the success of his show.

After the show aired, our source told us that, unfortunately, something was cut from Eddie’s video that the fans would have really liked.

Obviously, Ed wouldn’t have control of what they decide to air. You can see the edit right after Ed says, “Sorry I can’t be there…”.

The Eddie clip turned out to be the longest celebrity clip in the whole show (they saved the best for last!), and his clip received the loudest applause from the crowd. Eddie’s playing and guitar tone sounded great, and it appears that his hand has fully recovered from the surgery!

The Eddie part begins at 2:10:

  • dbphr

Energy drink… yes but behind the energy drink is a Lowenbrau. Well… maybe not a Lowenbrau, but it appears to be a longneck bottle.

  • dude

This whole thread is too damn funny and stoopid. Yet here I am reading and posting. D’ohh!

  • Canes_fan5150

I think Ed is a class act. Never heard a negative about him from somebody who wasn’t being kicked out of his band.

  • The Booger Man

Clint Eastwood is the Man. Long live Clint and all his movies.

    “Right Turn Clyde”

  • freddiegirl

    Yes, Scottt..I agree.

Ok. At the risk of getting flamed I WILL call Eddie a class act. I’ve been fortunate enough to meet him twice and twice he was warm and generous with his time. Really wanted to hear my opinions on the show/music. No, I don’t have to work with him but the bottom line is that there is always three sides to a story; his side, their side and whatever it was that really happened. That truth usually lies somewhere in the middle. I’ve said this a million times; yeah, I’d love new music but that doesn’t take away the hours of delight Ed and Co. have already given me with the music that he’s already made. He’s been through multiple breakups; a divorce, cancer and an ongoing alcohol and coke problem. Would any of you have handled it any better?

  • The Booger Man

“Hang Em High”. Clint Eastwood is cool.

I’m surprised they were able to get him to say that.

  • footah

Yeah I know this was only a blip but when I went on to this site this morning people were pretty negative which I get to a point because they we all want news or new music but I got to say to the a holes who were trying to start sh@t about a beer can being by the console any person who doesn’t live under a rock can see it an energy drink can. If and when they announce the new record you know Dave will be there because he is one of the greatest entertainers. BTW Eddie is one of the greatest guitar players..and he is pretty damn good on the keys to0.

  • Diamond Dean

its fantastic to see Eddie happy n healthy , he makes all of us happy , sure no music disappoints us , but its great to see Eddie ,

He is the king!!! fingers crossed

  • Ray

nice to hear and see Ed just having some fun! Making that wolf scream and laughing about it…THAT is what it’s about!

  • J5150C

“Whore-gay” Now that’s just too funny! Clint IS a class act!

The whore- gay Lopez band – for the second time – is NOT PLAYING PANAMA, THEY’RE PLAYING THE RHYTHM PART TO THE SOLO FROM “GOOD ENOUGH” OFF THE 5150 ALBUM!!!

Don’t let me catch anyone saying it’s “Panama” again man, i won’t come back to this site! Like anyone cares, LOL.

    Out

  • bobalu

Mikey C has practically waited his entire life for new music from VH! When I read that I about laughed myself out of my chair! Poor Bastard, its seems like lifetime for all of us diehard fans too!

  • http://yahoo albert

I bet you he has been invited dozens of times to the show but refuses to go.Poor ed vh 3 has brought down his confidence.

  • York

I am a huge VH freak like a lot of you. I eat up all of the 5 second clips of Eddie and the gang whenever possible. I read ALL the articles. I too am jones’n big time for new music. Isn’t this how it kind of happened just before the big reunion concert a couple of years ago. You started seeng sightings of Eddie in odd places, like a Kenny Chseny concert? I could be remembering that all wrong but I do think this and words from John 5 and Zappa are signs that SOMETHING is in the works. The biggest sign IMO is something a few of you have touched on. NO NEWS FROM ROTH. Which I think is good news. David has never been shy or slow about finding something to do or try.If VH has fallen apart, AGAIN, we would be hearing about it from him. The fact ROTH has been so quiet I think is a strong possibility a new record is in the works. I think its our best hope and I stress hope cuz lets face it VH fans. Hope is all we got. VH fans are rabidly loyal to their own detriment sometimes. I guess no, VH doesn’t LITERALLY owe the fans a thing but I think they should WANT to come through for us. Even now. Some of you will disagree with that, that’s cool. Its not the end of the world if they don’t come through but I think it would be the right thing for them to do. Again, just my opinion.

  • bbl

Lopez and his stupid show suck so bad it isn’t even funny. How this show has stayed on the air this long baffles me.

Ed and the boys are cooking up something big here folks. I have a feeling we are all going to be super pumped when an announcement is made.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    bbl:

The reason the show stayed on the air as long as it has is due to the wonderful politically correct world we live in….
    Sad but true.

  • Keith

So VHND … why can’t your “source” simply tell us what was cut ??????????????? You BOTH owe it to us don’t cha think ?

  • VH Dude

Don’t fault VHND for not having the cut segment or not knowing what it was. Be happy that we have a cool source for VH related news, even if most of it is nostalgia or seemingly insignificant news. Beats scouring the internet for scraps. They can only report what the VH camp is willing to give them. The fact that something was cut that we would appreciate…is still good news, even though we don’t know what it is! To me, it’s light at the end of the tunnel. Until Ed says he’s completely done, maybe we have something to hope for.

  • Karl

Is there nothing Ed won’t do to sell gear! And that tone really sucked.

But… kind of sounds like before the cut Ed was saying “I’m sorry I can’t be there but…” But what? Maybe “But I’m stuck up in 5150 recording the new album…” Kind of fits.

  • Ryan

It is so obvoius that Eddie is trying to sell his gear!!!! hahahahaha

    - In Monotone – “Thank you Eddie. The Wolfgang is amazing. It is so easy to play and it is certainly a great guitar to buy.”

  • Edwin van Overmeire

You’re right. From a reliable Dutch source it had to do with the recording of the new album. The recordings are on schedule!

  • Karl

And was someone being a little cheeky by putting the sobriety clip on just before Eddie…

  • Phil

It’s a good catch that you mentioned this clip so everyone could check it out if the wanted, too bad it turned out to be a complete waste of time. This, of course, is beyond control. Maybe someday a new album and tour, maybe.

  • Ed

Yo Eddie–Put out some new music ALREADY!! The GREATEST guitarist of all-time has been on the bench WAY too long!!

Who is heck George Lopez anyway? Who Cares? Someone from VHND should call that d-bag and get the missing clip. C’mon!

  • D Alexander Toluca Lake

Two things I have not seen in a while.

Ed looks HAPPY. Not wasted, or bitter.

Ed is also back to using a flanger. His sound was getting a bit thin and he was using a wah-wah more.

Ed, you had the greatest rock guitar sound ever.
It ain’t broke, dont fix it.

  • The Booger Man

Let’s not forget about Arsenio Hall either, he represented back in the OU812 and Poundcake and LRHRN day’s.

  • dlrevhsh

just wanna clear a few things up
    1) there is NO beer bottles in that video there is one red bull can thats it! I know it looks like a beer bottle behind the red bull but zoom in and look closely and you will see its not.
    2) Who cares if eddie is trying to sell his guitars he is running a buisness just like so many other musicians and its not like he just came on lopez to advertise his guitar he obviously said something else in “The Edit”.
    3) Im sure we are gonna get news of something big soon. just be patient people like dweezil and john5 dont just go around telling people that van halen are working on new albulm unless they really are its not like they are lieing.

  • scottt

Right on freddiegirl. Everything I’ve ever read about anyone who has met Ed has said he is the coolest sweetest dude. It’s so annoying when I come on here and read all the negative crap from a bunch disgruntled idiots talkin’ out their asses who don’t know anything about what’s really goin’ on. It’s mystifying why they still call themselves fans. Some fool trying to comment on Ed’s tone through the TV or computer speaker?? Please. Sorry dude, that’s a jackass thing to say! LMAO!!! I try not to get sucked into the debate, but sometimes I just have to call some of these fucktards on the dribble they crap out of their mouths.. I know the majority of the true fans feel this way. Ed’s in the studio, John5 and Dweezil have acknowledged that. They toured with Roth and gave us what we all wanted. There will be a new album. What more do you want, people? Chill out and quit acting like babies. At least we were given the heads up of an Ed appearance on tv, rather than missing it. Life goes on.

  • Old School Halen

Seems like a lot of you in here are too easily amused and excited about the dumbest things. You watch Eddie play guitar for 5 seconds and now you are lighting up the VHND saying he’s “on fire” and sounds awesome?? It appeared to me like he was focusing way too hard to play 5 seconds of “La Cucaracha” so he wouldn’t fuck it up on national TV – and then quickly reverted to the old finger-tapping stuff that’s impossible to screw up. This is the same guy who used to be able to play “Eruption” note-for-note with his eyes closed and half a case of Shlitz talls flowing through his veins!

Even if Eddie announced he was indeed working on a new album on the Lopez show, it doesn’t actually mean it’s anywhere close to being finished or even gotten off the ground in any significant way. We all remember the infamous “I got enough music to fill 10 albums” quote from 2000 that soured us for all these years. So far, all we got is really tiny snippets from close friends like Dweezil and John 5 saying very ambiguous things like “Eddie’s on fire”. I want rock solid news from reliable sources — like David Lee Roth giving a radio interview saying VH has already laid down 4 or 5 tasty tracks for the new album. That is something I can trust because Dave never lies to VH fans. Anything coming from Eddie’s or Alex’s mouth should be judged harshly.

  • SCAR

Hey, you haters, do you know what most of you need? You need to get a fucking life!!! Fuck em all, keep rocking Eddie, old school fans still dig you brother!!!!

  • Atomic Pete

    @ J5150C

It’s not the solo section to “Good Enough”. It’s
obviously an attempt at “Panama”. Now please keep your
promise and never return to this site.

    @ Old School Halen
You’re a hater. “he was focusing way too hard to play 5 seconds of “La Cucaracha” so he wouldn’t fuck it up on national TV”. Are you kidding me? Give me a break.

And while I’m at it Karl, you’re such a whiner.
Complaining about his tone? I’d like to hear your tone,
second thought no I wouldn’t. Wanker!

  • scottt

One of life’s rules in case you haven’t learned by now…is don’t judge. At least until you’ve walked a mile in Ed’s shoes, which you will never do. You will get(news) what you get when you get it. Deal. If hearing stuff from Dweezil and John5 that Ed’s been rockin’ ain’t enough to satisfy you, that’s your problem. It doesn’t actually mean you know shit, either. Maybe some of you should divert your angst at something more serious like those BP fuckers!

  • Karl

Don’t be silly Old School Halen. scottt has just put you straight – expecting a band to actually produce music (you know, like bands do) makes you a whining crybaby.

  • holykryptonite

I love Eddie as a musician. He’s a genius, but I’m sorry class act is stretching it.

What nobody seems to bring up is that Ed was trying to replace Mike during the Fair Warning era. Auditioning different bassists behind his back. AND trying to get Billy Sheehan.

Let me ask you something. Based on that alone, why the hell should Mike have been loyal to Ed in not touring with Sammy back in 2000?

If the man was going to lose his job down the line anyway, why should he show any respect to Ed? Food for thought.

  • scottt

Whatever Karl. Real fans support the artist. You gonna diss on Ed after all the kickass music he’s given you all these years and all you do is complain when the signs are out there the new stuff is coming. Just not fast enough for some of you? Awwwww, whaaaa whaaaa whaaaa…like Scar said…get a life.

  • Canes_fan5150

    @ holykryptonite
have you ever wondered if mike did anything to deserve it? Or do you still believe that he can do no wrong.

  • scottt

Who knows what Ed’s issues with Mike were long ago, that’s his business. Maybe you would have felt the same if you were Ed. I know about the Billy Sheehan thing, but do not recall ever reading or hearing about ‘other auditions’. Don’t get me wrong, I love Mike Anthony. Who knows why shit happens within bands like it does. It’s just the way it goes sometimes. Doesn’t make Eddie an evil dude. He’s only human. After a while maybe Ed just changed his mind about it, regardless we will never know. Mike took the high road because Eddie writes the fuckin’ music. The soap opera shit doesn’t matter. In the end it’s about the music anyway. Like it or leave it.

  • bbl

I think the clip is great. Eddie looks like he is having fun again. I would love to be a fly on the wall in that studio to hear him playing. New album or not, Eddie rocks–always has and always will. I really do think these guys are in there making a kick ass album. If for nothing else, he is doing it to catapult Wolfie into super stardom.

  • Craig

Blaming Lopez for editing Ed’s message is silly as they have plenty of outlets for communication. Van Halen has an official website, and an unofficial one (VHND). Both are capable of hosting video with minimal effort. The official one still has a two line “Happy New Year” message from December of last year as its last update. The unofficial one tries valiantly to bring us little snippets of news and updates but alas the band is not very communicative. But if Edward, Alex, Dave or Wolfgang have anything to say, or any message to pass on, a short video update on this or the official site would be very, very easy to do. Many, many bands communicate very regularly with their fans via their websites (see U2 as a very good example).

Also, I want that hour back. Lopez is probably the least amusing television host ever.

  • The Booger Man

Hang EM High Clint! The Black Widows got yer back. Diver Down.

  • dlrevhsh

comon guys chill out stop arguing about stupid sht old school halen alot of people on here like to hear ed play even if it is only for 5 seconds if you dont like it then dont watch it no one is forcing you .

  • Tommy Boy

I hesitate to comment within the midst of such self-serving, “I’m The Center of the Fucking Universe” vortex of douchebags…but here I go for a sec. He doesn’t owe anyone a thing. We all know this. Van Halen has historically been forthright with each release. And then treated us to a musical spectacle like no other. The immediate media barrage of shit that most of us encounter each day has allowed us to believe that EVERYONE should utilize this wonderment of society…the internet. Maybe, just maybe, Ed and those guys kinda wanna preserve the genuine nature of releasing music in today’s environment. This is why I’m passionate about these guys, especially Ed. It is that he is a true living example of musical mastery. Debussy, Bach, Beethoven, Vivaldi, Tchiakovsky, Van Halen…not bad company. It’s not about being secretive…and it’s not about having a “Rockumentary” film the day to day goings-on at 5150 and Ed’s house. It’s fucked up how “reality” tv has supposedly offered us carte` blanch into anyone’s life at any moment. And when someone actually doesn’t heed the call of “stardom” he’s now balked upon as if he’s a mentally challenged guy. Just think about it and please………………………………..shut the fuck up.

  • Tommy Boy

And lotsa people like Lopez…you don’t have to like ‘em. Just sayin’….

  • B.Good

I know ill probably catch crap for this, but so what if the man had a beer sitting there, He’s happy..get over it. As long as he’s happy, I’m sure something will come out, whether it be an actual album/tour, or its little stuff like tv/movie spots and bootleg stuff. You just gotta take what you can get.

  • bsc

I’ve watched this video probably 15 times lol and I just noticed something.. I haven’t seen that look on Eddie’s face in a really long time. Not a smile but that Grin. When he’s playin’ he’s got that look. Like he’s got something up his sleeve you ain’t gonna believe. I imagine its the look he had when he came up with the beginning of mean street. I hope he does come out with something.. and I hope its so freakin’ good and fresh that it shuts us all up with awe. Give us all a good kick in the ass Ed!!

  • bbl

I’ve got to tell you all that the biggest take away for me on this whole thing is how abolutely horrible Lopez is. I mean are you kidding me??? His show is so frikkin bad it makes my hair hurt. Eddie rules!!!!!!

  • mjc

Craig, you’re spot on about vh’s failure to utilize thier websites.

  • Vanicionado

“Oh won’t you tell me… Where have all the good times gone?”

  • Jeff

    1) It’s “Panama.” Why in the world would he play the rhythm section from “Good Enough”? Very few people would recognize it.

    2) It’s a beer bottle. I haven’t looked real close (dlrevhsh?), but 2, maybe 3, times. Way too much time at this point.

    3) If he was gonna say they’re recording an album, I would think Alex and Wolf would be there. He’s noodling, he’s selling guitars. If they were recording, there would be another announcement in a different venue. If Lopez was the best they could do to make a legit announcement, things suck!

    4) I’m really not a hater. I just don’t think they have any real desire to tour and record anymore. Don’t read too much into Roth’s being quiet. It was more/less the same in the years leading up to ’07. They should probably just say they’re all done, and move on.

    5) I’m not going near the “class act” business. Then you’ll REALLY think I’m a hater.

  • JH2

I think it’s hillarious that Van Halen doesn’t use their websites. These guys have better things to do than play computers on their down time. And you know it’s Eddie’s new wife who posts on his Twitters and Facetubes. They’re true men with missions- and that mission is women, jam, party, rinse, and repeat tomorrow. THATS why I enjoy Van Halen. Quit trying to make it a soap opera!

  • Karl

“Just not fast enough for some of you?”

Too fucking right it’s not fast enough. Or did you somehow miss the Tumbleweed Decade? And the only “Awwwww, whaaaa whaaaa whaaaa” is coming from guys like you who get all upset and cry like babies if anyone so much as dares whisper that maybe a band should be… well, a band. It’s utterly pathetic that when, after a decade, someone says “O.K. enough now Ed, shut up and play your guitar…” some dick like you turns up and says “Just not fast enough for some of you?” Did you even think about that sentence before you wrote it? You say “The soap opera shit doesn’t matter. In the end it’s about the music anyway.” Wakey, wakey dude, apart from a few cash grabs, soap opera is all we’ve had for the late ten years or more. I will, though, be in line before all of you if a new disc ever does emerge. :-)
