Annihilator covers Van Halen’s “Romeo Delight”

Van Halen’s “Romeo Delight” has been covered by Canadian melodic thrash metal pioneers, Annihilator. The track comes off Annihilator’s 13th (self-titled) album, which released today (May 25th) in Europe.

RadioMetal.com spoke with Annihilator’s founder and guitarist, Jeff Waters, about covering “Romeo Delight:”

At the end of the record, there’s a cover of VAN HALEN’s “Romeo Delight”. It’s quite a surprising choice for a thrash metal band. Actually, not a lot of bands would risk covering VAN HALEN mainly because of Eddie’s incredible guitar skills… Was it the challenge that motivated you in covering this song?

Jeff Waters: I wasn’t planning to pick a song because I liked it, but because it had changed my career, or my guitar playing, or my musical direction or something. That album from VAN HALEN, Women And Children First, in 1980, had a big influence on my guitar playing career. Actually, “Romeo Delight” was a very heavy song in 1980. Of course nowadays we see it as a party rock song with David Lee Roth and great guitar playing, but back in 1980, it was considered a very heavy and aggressive song. That turned me on to bands like JUDAS PRIEST, BLACK SABBATH and IRON MAIDEN. That song was very influential for me, and that’s why I covered it. I was trying to do a cover song of the best guitar player in history, but I wasn’t worried. I’m such a fan, I love Eddie and I love his playing, so it was a lot of fun to try it.

Your guitar sound seems different on this cover song compared to the rest of the record. Were you trying to get closer to the classic VAN HALEN sound? Actually, you’re even using the phaser effect VAN HALEN’s well known for using…

What Eddie did in 1980 was use only one guitar. Usually, you put one guitar in the right speaker, and one in the left speaker; but Eddie only had one. I tried to copy that idea, that production style. I also used the same pedals he was using. I collect VAN HALEN things, like shoes and guitars and pedals, everything. I just tried to have fun doing this, the whole thing was fun. [Jeff Waters has been a longtime customer of Van Halen Store!]

It sounds like you really had a blast while doing this cover! How come you did so few cover songs before in your career? The only one I can recall is a JUDAS PRIEST song…

We never had anything on our official CDs, but we had JUDAS PRIEST’s “Hell Bent For Leather” as a bonus on our Set The World On Fire LP in 1993. We also did an AC/DC cover for a live album. This is the first one that’s on an official album, and it was cool to do it. It’s probably the last one I’m gonna do on an ANNIHILATOR CD. Someday, when I get really old, maybe I’ll do a cover album or something, but not now. “Romeo Delight” meant a lot to me and it was a lot of fun.

When listening to ANNIHILATOR’s albums, and especially this new one, we can really hear that you put a lot of creativity not only in your solos but also in the rhythm parts. This is also something which is particularly striking in VAN HALEN’s songs. In this regard, could we say that you’re somehow the VAN HALEN of thrash metal?

If I said yes, I’d look like an asshole! But the one similarity is that VAN HALEN was very good at rhythm guitar playing, songwriting and guitar solos. I think in my own way, in my own style of music, I’m good at writing songs, playing rhythm guitar and doing solos. Same thing with Michael Amott. Not all guitar players have all three of those qualities, many have only two. For example, Hetfield is a great songwriter and rhythm player, but he’s not a solo shredder. Glen Tipton is the best example of all these qualities: he writes great songs and shreds on guitar and is great at rhythm playing. But there are not many people that do these three things very well. So yeah, maybe there’s a little comparison!

I know you can’t top it, but that’s not too shabby and he DID pay homage!

  • Remember the Prom Queen

Thank you, Annihilator, for making the original song as played by VH sound even better by releasing your lackluster cover!

Kudos, though, for a valiant attempt and recognition of the true master: EVH!

  • Lupercal

Man, all these classic VH covers recently…It really makes you appreciate two things:

    1) Gary actually did a brilliant job with the old songs, because of…

    2) There is only one David Lee Roth! Everybody else can just bite his dust.

I’ve been a VH fan since I was about 14 (5 years ago) and not until now have I really appreciated Dave’s voice in these songs. Weird eh? It took a couple of covers (both played well on the guitar, sung terribly) for me to appreciate there is only one David Lee Roth. I mean that guy really is the bomb when it comes to Van Halen.

Now I realise why Sammy turns so many people off….

This is a big day for me.

And yeah, this may be a shitty rendition of the song but at least the guitarist didn’t try to make it his own song – he is a true fan.

  • One Foot Out the Door

I think its a pretty damn good cover! :)

  • THE ATOMIC PUNK

    OUTSTANDING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Canes_fan5150

Good call Lupercal. Dave is the hardest get right on the covers. No disrespect to Ed but enough practice can make somebody sound somewhat like him. Dave has a talent that no skill can copy. It’s his own style. Ed is the greatest musician of the 20th century though.

  • JD

Wow. This cover is absolutely incredible! I could get into that sorta sound all over again, ya know? Anyways, awesome cover.

  • CrashDavis

    Great cover!

  • Jucca

I like this cover! Very well played!

  • ben

Great cover, really cool he chose Romeo Delight, one of my favorites.

  • Vanicionado

One of my favourite Van Halen songs…

Sweet cover! Pays homage, but still puts on an original spin…

  • Scottso

These recent Van Halen covers got me thinking: VH1 occasionally has those “Rock Honors” specials where a few bands play the songs of the group that’s being honored. How cool would it be if they honored The Mighty VH?!

  • Brian

Well done. A good reason to check out the CD.

  • Karl

Excellent cover! Love the way he played the solo – different, but you could still hear the original underneath. Very clever. The only negative I would say is that when VH did a cover they twisted and turned all the way and this might be, solo aside, a little by the numbers. Really good all the same.

  • RA 8 1 2

NICE! That was a pretty good cover. Romeo Delight is my favorite Dave Era song. Even the bass lines were done well as you can hear in during gtr solo. Now lets hear some new tunes!

  • chris.omeara

That was GREAT! My only complaint is that when it ended I didn’t get to hear it followed by “Take Your Whiskey Home”…

  • Greg

    Great version.
Very similar to the original, especially with the volume swells, the flanger and right channel ambient fill reverb.

Smokin! I agree…one of their best songs.

P.S. I hope the spliced edits within the song are not on the actual track!

  • alexandre

Great to see the influence of Van Halen on other musicians. Everybody should listen to Van Halen!!!

  • Panama Red

“Women and Children First” is such a timeless Classic BADASS album! And speaking of Dave’s voice – it’s one of a kind. I thought this cover was really good, just like I thought the cover of “Unchained” was really good on the last post,(except for the vocals)
Musically the guitar players in both of those bands were able to come really damn close to sounding like Eddie throughout Almost the whole songs. But without Dave’s sound it kinda throws the songs off, I think. Dave’s stoned and whiskey soaked baritone voice was MADE for those songs. So when I hear those covers of CVH I can appreciate the guitar playing and drums but you gotta have Dave singing those or they sometimes just sound kinda cheesy (especially the “Unchained” cover – sounded too late 80′s early 90′s Hair band-ish) but Dweezil’s playing was great, he has figured out how to get as close to Eddie’s sound as anyone probably could.
But I don’t care if someone covers a CVH song and can “sing better” than Dave, it’s not the same. If someone who has better pitch or better range than Dave sings a classic VH song it still doesn’t sound as good to me. You gotta have Dave singing those songs or it just doesn’t sound quite right.

I thought the guitar playing here by Jeff Waters/Annihilator was very close to Eddie’s, you could tell the dude has duplicated Eddie’s rig/equipment/effects as close as possible, so that helps obviously. I liked it.
A couple of things I noticed : it skipped at the 3:29 mark. I’m sure it’s not like that on the album. It’s probably just a glitch in the player here.
Around the 2:00 and 3:35 marks it sounds a little more like Steve Vai’s playing than EVH to me, but overall I thought it was a damn good cover.

I can’t wait for new VH, even if it’s an instrumental album. I would prefer a new album w/ DLR singing but at this point I would be stoked at any kind of release from Ed and Al. Ever since I heard those instrumental tracks from “Twister” I thought it would be cool to have an album of Eddie’s and Al’s musical genius showcased on an album. But anyway I’m rambling, here’s hoping for a new Van Halen album with Dave! (or at least something from Eddie and Alex)
Thanks VHND for giving us stuff in lieu of VH news. It’s coming…

  • dlrevhsh

sweet cover ! great choice too.

  • Top Jimmy

The funny thing about this cover is it shows you just how important the other members of VH were to the overall sound…

Of course this singer isn’t as good as Dave, not even close. But the bass and drums just don’t swing or gel like Alex and Mike did.

  • dude

I like a cover that takes a song in a new direction and not one that tries to sound just like the original. That being said, looking at it as a tribute to one of his favorite players, I guess it’s cool.

  • stew

David Lee Roth Is the one and only ROCK GOD! There will never be another . Lupercal can we be friends ?

  • John

Not bad. It’s easy to cover roth’s vocals because he sings in monotone, backround vocals could be better. Nobody can play like Eddie.

  • kenny

    very cool

  • RICK BERDESKI

I gotta admit…this was VERY GOOD!!! cant duplicate the great memory of Van Halen…but since they retired this was refreshing, Great blast from the PAST

  • BIG AL OZ

I know a lot of Metal and Speed Metal fans that have a huge respect for Van Halen’s ‘Women And Children First’ album. They all agree that songs like Loss Of Control, Romeo’s Delight and the rest are a massive influence on where Metal went from there. W&CF is VH’s heaviest album to date. Being a buddying drummer myself (bias of course!) Alex’s drumming on songs like Loss Of Control is frightening amazing!! Those classic double bass shuffle’s of Alex’s are inspiring and damn hard to play!! I agree with Top Jimmy the other members of Van Halen were just as important, Van Halen not only rocked hard, they sure knew how to swing it, and LOUD!!!!

  • http://vhnd Emery

I likey. This is not sports people Dang!. A band that does a good re-make to a song they like is all good in my book :)

  • http://www.merchnow.com blindbubbacheeks

    Holy shit, that was good!

  • chris.omeara

Every time I hear DLR sing “Baby please- I can’t take it any more, aw Baby please- I can’t take it any more…” It always makes me think of Chuck Berry’s “Maybelline, why can’t you be true? aw Maybelline, why can’t you be true?”… but in a COOL Van Halen-ized way… :)

  • Scott

I was really ready to hate this. Very cool!

  • Fair Warning

Awesome cover! I just can’t believe a few people here thought that it sucked. Are you out of your minds!

The cover of Unchained with Dweezil and Jack Russel sounded “phoned in” at least on Russel’s vocals. This cover actually had emotion and feel.

Jeff Waters is a true bad-ass guitarist. If you’re not familiar with Annihilator, you should give them a try- it’ll be worth it.

  • Joey Hopersberger

    BAD ASS!

Could’ve been faster though. I totally expected to hear machine gun speed rhythm and Megadeth huge scooped gain in true thrash metal fashion, but it’s cool that he tried to copy Eddie’s old sound. Seriously though, if you wanna play like Van Halen you gotta play as fast and as loud as you can! This sounds careful. Careful is most definitely not Van Halen.

  • Joey Hopersberger

    P.S. that’s the stupidest album cover I’ve ever seen…

  • J5150C

I don’t think anyone/group will ever duplicate anything from the mighty Van Halen. Hell, not even Van Halen can duplicate Van Halen.

    Out!

  • halenguy51

WOW Great job boys great cover!!

  • Robert

I think that was a damn near-perfect cover of one of VH’s best songs.

  • Vanicionado

RICK B. said “… but since they retired this was refreshing, Great blast from the PAST”

Like how you dropped ‘since they retired’…

Hope they haven’t, but learning to accept it.

Another great rock band released an album today after a nine year hiatus that included two releases from a Supergroup, one not-so super group (good album anyhow) and even a solo effort.

Why can’t Van Halen do the same?

  • Chester

chris.omeara – Just wanted to correct the record that Tora! Tora! follows Romeo Delight, at least on my LP, Tape & CD. Maybe you only listen to it alphabetically in iTunes…

  • http://www.palermoguitars.com palermo guitars

f’n awesome. good job guys. is that a drum machine?

  • Rob

    sounds great!

  • Mark Sachs

Extremely creepy album cover. Reminds me of that old movie, “Children of the Damned” Of course, I guess that is what they were trying to acheive with the look because they are hard core! I did enjoy the cover of Romeo Delight though. It is interesting so many bands want to cover and actually pay tribute to Van Halen. It is indeed a good thing!

  • Chad

I’m not a fan on Annihilator, but that is one of the best Van Halen covers I’ve ever heard.

  • non-stop talker

Great fucking cover and AWESOME fucking song!

  • Michael C.

I’ve never heard of that band either, but that was an amazing cover. They did a great job. i was smiling the whole time it was playing. Well done.

  • Ryan

Awesome cover! this almost never happens. Great job Annihilator!

  • KTC5150

One of the best VH covers I hacve heard in a while!!!
(Incidentally, it happens to be my ULTIMATE VH song!!!)

  • Adrian

That guy sounds really smart and badass gotta say…

  • handymanrockstar84

Great job!! I loved the translation. It’s pretty cool to hear the Mikey and Dave-like shrieks in the back ground. Awesome that a modern metal band found relevance in the music and didn’t over color it with ridiculous down tuning…

  • Dante

There is another VH cover that will be coming out next year. Stryper is doing an album of all cover tunes, one of which is “On Fire.” I expect the playing to be respectable – though I don’t anticipate them getting the guitar tone – but the singer sounds like the guy in Styx, not Dave.
