Dweezil Zappa: “Van Halen played me some new stuff from his record”

Eddie Van Halen hasn’t talked to the press in a while, but one of his his friends has – Dweezil Zappa tells Glide Magazine that he has been hanging with his old friend Eddie Van Halen recently, and that Eddie played him some of his “new stuff from his record”!

© Mr. Bonzai -- Dweezil Zappa in the Utility Muffin Research KitchenGlide Magazine: How did growing up around your father and the countless amazing musicians he employed change the course of your musical development?

Dweezil Zappa: The thing is, I could always tell that what my dad did was on a different level than other music that I heard, so I always had this sense of, you know, “I could never do that.” So the music that got me inspired to play guitar was different from my dad’s music. My first biggest influences were Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen. I never got to meet Randy Rhoads, but I did get to meet Eddie Van Halen. So seeing how he did things up close really changed my abilities quickly, because when you can see how somebody does something up close, if you’re the type of person that’s going to spend some time practicing, it’s like I had all these images that were burned into my mind forever that started that whole thing.

It’s kind of funny, because I’ve recently been spending some time with Eddie Van Halen after being out of touch for a while. He was playing me some new stuff from his record, and I was playing him some stuff that I had been working on for this project, you know, playing Frank’s music. He actually came to the Jeff Beck show the other day too. [Dweezil is talking about the recent LA show on 4/17/10 when he opened for Jeff Beck - VHND] But one thing that was actually a pivotal and hilarious thing to me was that I was showing him some stuff, these different ways I had worked out to play quintuplets, and he said “Uh, you lost me there. I don’t even know what you’re talking about. Who would have thought after all these years, you’d be giving me a guitar lesson.” To me, that was hilarious because I couldn’t Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic.comhave envisioned that myself, and also the flipside of him coming to a show of mine when I had been to so many of his. There he was, in the dressing room before we went on, and we saw him after the show and everything, and it’s just such a role reversal. But it’s definitely a strong and good memory for me because I think it would have to be really be rare for anybody to have the ability to have that kind of communication with the thing or the person that inspired you so much to begin with, and have this mentor type of relationship and have some common ground in a different way after all these years. It is a unique and cool experience to have.

If this is ‘allowed’ to be taken as it is being taken and There is no new VH music ( meaning- Ed doesn’t say this isn’t new VH material that’s being released ) Then we all will finally have the truth about whether or not Ed is stringing us along.I for one hope that this is new music and that they will tour again. We need ‘The mighty Van Halen’ now more than ever.

Cool story and video from Dweezil. I’ll believe the “new album” B.S. whe I am buying it from ITUNES to put on my IPOD. It’s getting depressing to hear all of the teaser crap about the “new album” coming and still nothing. We cant watch the youtube videos forever, boys, hurry the fuck up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had no idea Dweezil even played guitar, let alone that good. I just wish the video showed a closeup of his hands.

  • pete

wow, people still get on the edge of their seats when they hear a third party talk about new van halen music?i hope its true like everyone else but i’ll believe it when i hear the music.

  • Chester

I don’t think anyone here is a “Van Halen basher.” On the contrary, I think everyone here hopes that there will be a new album soon, but we have been down this road before… New songs with Dave (back in 1996 and again in 2001/2002), and then Ed told those DJ guys in Ohio (or wherever they were) a few years ago that he has two albums worth of material, so who knows what he may have played for Dweezil. Not to be a naysayer, but why would he use Dweezil Zappa to leak some news about a new album? Just come out and say it. At least update the website with something like “Coming Soon…” instead of the “Happy New Year” message which is a bit dated since it’s almost summer.

  • Canes_fan5150

Dweezil is amazing. Easily the best cover of eruption ever. You don’t hear too many people that can make tapping sound as good as when Ed does it.

  • Jor-L5150

    well….. thats interesting……

DLR has been mum since the last tour ended, and dotn expectthat to change- the layers of contractual agreements that it took for 07/08 to happen have to be thicker than 2 bibles and the book of mormon.

    - no van hagar songs
    - no DLR solo songs
    - dave does NOT talk to the press during or after the tour
    - no alcohol on stage during the show
    - the kid is replacing mike
    - dave tones down his antics
    - no obligation for any further actions

THAT was a wrangling of epic proportion!
so, if dave wants to keep the gig he’ll just go along and save his “pull” for the studio work (if any )and we shouldnt expect to hear from him untill VAN HALEN is ready to announce a new single.

  • Jor-L5150

that said, van halen HAS to know they’ll NEVER get away with another singer. never. no one will support it.

if its billed as “eddie van halen(solo) and friends” then maybe, but it wont be an arena act.

  • phillster

Some of you guys really know how to piss on a parade.lol
A few months ago somebody “blogged” here that they ran into John5 at a “NAMM-convention”and john5 said he just worked w/Roth on “A” solo album.I just saw a commercial for”John5`s”New album featuring “guest” artists.I`m thinkin` Jonn5 was refering to his OWN new album-Not a Roth solo album.Even If Ed played
“some new stuff from his record”to the”DWEEZ”-I`m sure he`s a good enough friend to Ed to NOT spill ALL the beans about it.I`m also sure Ed said:”Whatever you do,Don`t tell anybody”
The very fact that this non-official story has all of our collective panties in a bunch just PROVES the fact that this band has the same legendary status only achieved by the BEATLES,STONES,ZEPPELIN,WHO&so on.
I`ve been waiting for a ROTH/=VH= album for 26yrs.So don`t cry to me about how long it takes for a miracle.
It happend when PAGE&PLANT got together in`95,
When the STONES got back together in`89,
And when THE WHO&KISS got back together in`96.
    KEEP HOPE ALIVE!!!!!
    Bottoms Up!!!!

  • Powder Burnz

Used to be a huge VH fan, but i am finding it hard to believe there will be a new VH record. They do nothing for their fans and VH fans have waited to long for any new news form eddie and the boys. I have given up hope for anything new.

  • Powder Burnz

Nice comment mjc. Up the irons!

  • Canes_fan5150

At this point I think you are right Jor-L5150. Van halen is just one large dependent relationship right now. At least something is holding them together though right?

  • John

Dave could hit the road with Dweezil on lead guitar and play the festivals again. Maybe this band has just road off into the sunset, it’s gotta happen sometime.

  • BIG AL OZ

If this is the good news we Van Halen fans hope it is, then why should we be surprised in the first place? Van Halen don’t make a new album for the sake of releasing it to shove it up some ex-band members because they’ve released theirs.

I think Van Halen for the first time in their career have taken a step back and given each other the space apart and respect each others needs. I’m referring to the Van Halen of today! We all know Diamond Dave is a workaholic and runs a million miles an hour, but even Dave has accepted the music biz today is not what it use to be. In a nutshell, whats the rush?!!

Whether Alex or Eddie will admit it, I think the Gary Charone VH III album was a rushed job. Listening to the album today, it’s a big shame that it turn out the way it did. The music is amazing and Eddie’s writing and playing reached a new high, but the production and Gary’s vocal sound just didn’t hit the notes on the stave that make Van Halen such a unique band. But when you listen to Me Wise Magic and Can’t Get This Stuff No More that ‘VH SOUND’ is there!!

If Dweezil has spoken about some new music of VH, then I’m sure he has Ed’s blessing for letting us all know. All the EVH bashers and VH naysayers have to remember Van Halen have the RESPECT!! As it has always been with a new Van Halen album on the horizon, the teasers have begun. I bet Dave, Eddie, Alex & Wolfie are hard at it laying down tracks as we blog, comment and tweet ourselves!!

Long live the mighty VAN HALEN!!

  • Bridge

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The only band to come out of the ’70s that currently has all original members and successfully blends nostalgia with the new by continually touring and releasing new and old stuff is…Cheap Trick. Ironically, the band that a fan once said (I think it was printed in the fair Warning tour book or something) “You guys are Cheap Trick in disguise, you ain’t fooling me!” We all know that if the Michael Anthony thing never happened, this Cheap Trick type perpetuation would have worked out perfectly for our favorite band. It’s not to be. As a fan (understatement of a lifetime) I’ve resigned myself to just try and enjoy whatever it is that any of them puts out when ever that happens. I’m not a huge fan of Chickenfoot, but I appreciate the effort. The built up picture in my head of how VH should have evolved is, and has been a waste of space in my brain for some time now. They will do what they will do and that’s that. I don’t need anyone telling me how my future looks in their heads (sorry Ma & Pa) know what I mean? The arguments, comparisons and conjecture isn’t even fun. It’s all bull shit. Live and let live. Peace out.

  • john

Bridge, excellent comments on Cheap Trick. They should be one on the most respected bands around.

  • http://www.blueluster.net Patrick

Honestly are we ever going to get a new VH record? Can Ed play anymore? Is he sober? So many questions. It’s been a year since we heard that the band was rehearsing and still nothing. At this point I really don’t know! I’ll hope for something soon.

  • RickieVanWhalen

It’s hard to read these post and adjust my meds at the same time.

  • Pat

New material? I don’t count VH3, so how many years has it been since Balance? 15 years or so? VH is going to make Guns N Roses seem prolific.

  • alexandre

Dweezil playing Eruption is just incredible!!! Actually, for me,its sounds better than Eddie on the last tour, for what i saw on You Tube. Listen to his version of Unchained on the cd “Van Halen Tribute 2000″… fantastic. And i loved the way he talked about Eddie before the solo showing all his admiration for greatest guitar player in the world!!

  • Steve

I have said all along that VH’s management had stated that there would be a new album in 2010. We are only in May yet people were willing to call it quits already. I think they are just being quite because when you talk something up really big then people’s expectations go through the roof. Nothing to say before it’s time. That was the story in 2004. I recently listened to one of Ed’s interviews back then. I think he is still on the same philosophy.

  • Matt ( from MASS )

Nice post!! … it was sort of a tease but it’s great to hear that there IS new Van Halen music in the works.

    thank you!

“We are only in May yet people were willing to call it quits already.”

That will be May of the fifteenth year since they last produced anything of interest…

  • MMM

I had my doubts about the new album but then realized that Dave has not been doing any solo stuff. Dave has never sat still two years after a tour. No news is good news.

  • Phil

Still, I’ll believe it when I have the cd in my hand and I’m waiting for the show to start.

  • John

Sorry to be pessimistic, but I doubt this is all part of the great plan… Let’s secretly record a new album without anyone knowing about it or any media leaks. Then, let’s randomly invite Dweezil Zappa over, let him hear a few choice cuts, and then we’ll let him drop the news during an interview with Glide Magazine. Yeah, that’s how it will all unfold. Dave does things BIG. Glamour, glitz, etc.

  • snuffles

didn’t ed say something about dave not doing stuff like that? at least for the last tour? ya know, goofy, funny, dlr stuff? idf they tour again, dave should be allowed to act how he wants.

I’ll admit it is promising to hear that Eddie is “flirting” with some new music, but I’m not gonna get too excited just yet. Although I am inclined to think that this is Eddie’s way of slowly trying to build anticipation/excitement/rumour/etc when it comes to a new album. Not that he needs to, as we all know it will go straight to No. 1 and sell shitloads. I just think it’s a shame how the whole band seems to be disconnected from their fans, I don’t understand that at all! The main reason (I think) that we don’t hear anything from DLR is because he’s obviously signed his soul away to the Van Heln brothers, and been completely shut down/cut off legally from disclosing anything regarding touring, new material etc.
Eddie needs to get past his past failures, namely the VHIII album, MAN UP, and get some new music out there to prove his worth, otherwsie all he’ll be seen as is wasted talent!

  • mikey

Sorry guys – but if you really read what Dweezil said it sounds like he’s talking about about an Eddie Van Halen solo album is in the works not a Van Halen album.

  • Karl

    Matt from Australia says:

“Eddie needs to get past his past failures, namely the VHIII album…”

It does kind of look like the first time in his career that Ed had a bad review he pranced out of the room in a big strop and never came back. There’s been plenty of evidence over the years that Edward is quite fragile, he’s said many a time that the drinking was to get him through the trauma of being ‘public’. So maybe after years of consistent adulation an album bombing was something he had no idea how to cope with and so he just curled up in a ball and that’s where he’s been ever since, so to speak.

    mikey says:

“Sorry guys – but if you really read what Dweezil said it sounds like he’s talking about about an Eddie Van Halen solo album is in the works not a Van Halen album.”

I think you’re reading way too much into once sentence out of a whole interview. Do you really think Dweezil was choosing his words that precisely when he was in mid flow?

  • Lupercal

    Karl,

Unfortunately you’re right. It would’ve been pretty easy for Eddie to just do the next album with Gary, and just not give a crap about the press for 2 or 3 years. I mean, he doesn’t strike me as the sort of person who DOES care about press but the fact that VH3 wasn’t Platinum, and wasn’t well received, was probably somewhat of a downer that he just couldn’t come back from.

We all know that it is 99.99999% likely that Eddie has recorded some new material since 1999, in his own time. Its been a good few years now, and although he hasn’t been super active as an artist, its a given he’s got a lot of material. So for his friend to say “played me some new stuff”, isn’t really anything new. I don’t think Dweezil really sculpted his words carefully (lets face it, this isn’t national news yet is it?) to form some sort of pre-press release teaser information…just seemed like he said “Eddie played me some new stuff, my dad was friends with him, respect to them both, etc”.

I came into this world way too late for Van Halen and have no hangups about any albums…19 years old and none of my friends really know who Van Halen are, except what they’ve played on “Guitar Hero” or heard on a Mix CD. Sad, isn’t it? I mean, VH may not be super successful right now but they’re still relevant and their music is timeless.

Plus, thought I’d give my love for Jeff Beck here. Another great guitarist, his album “Guitar Shop” is brilliant. Something similar to what Ed and Al had in mind for “5150″ if they had no singer.

  • MMM

If things went sour with VH, Dave would imediately start a follow up tour. Thats what he always does. Although Dave probably made more on the 2007 tour than he made in two decades. Could be livin it up somewhere. lol

  • non-stop talker

Fuuuuuuuukkkkk I wish I could play guitar like that! How come when I play it it doesn’t sound anything like that??? I need mooooooooore practice but who has the fucking time, let alone the patience? Oh well hahahahahahaha

  • dlrevhsh

comon guys eddie wont do a solo albulm he will definetly include wolfie and alex so its gonna be a van halen cd and im sure dave will be there too.

  • Karl

^ Yes, the idea that Ed wouldn’t give Wolf the chance to play on a big VH release, not to mention Al, is ridiculous.

    1. EVH has already proved his “worth”.

    2. EVH is already seen as the greatest rock ‘n’ roll guitarist ever by millions of people, whether he’s wasted or sober! :)

  • Dooley

    Dweezil said:

Eddie played him some of his “new stuff from his record”!

Oh, really?? New songs taking shape with Dave on vocals? I sure as hell hope so. Or random riffs that will never see the light of day? Sadly, this may be the extent of it.

You make the call. Many people on this site, self included, are not holding their breath.

  • vanhalendlrband

I really hope this is true. I would probably get lifted out of my depression quite a bit, as it already is with the news of a new album, if the current Van Halen lineup brings out an album. Wolfy been out of school about a year now right?

  • Tim

He’s probably just talking about some instrumental crap they have recorded in their studio. Face it guys, VH is no longer going to produce music. They took our cash this last tour, and we gladly gave it to them. They cannot get as much cash for a record. It’s easier to tour and not do any interviews like this last one–that way you don’t have to leave yourself open to criticism, which is what has killed Eddie’s creativity. He openly admitted as much in his most recent interview, yet everyone chooses to forget that and believe this.

  • Matt from Australia

    @ Remember the Prom Queen:-

“prove his worth” was a bad choice of wording on my part. What I was trying to say was – Is VH still capable of producing an album worth listening too…I hope so. That’s what we’re all hoping for right?

  • Pete

Hmmm…I wonder if it had any vocals on it? I wonder if there’s any contact right now between Dave and Ed?

  • phillster

100 responses in less than 1 week for this story.
The Rabid =VH= fans have spoken.

  • Jor-L5150

its entirely possible that ed’s business plan is to completely take his time and record at liesure and take 3 years to put together tracks to offer to dave and then and only then say he has an album ready.

the moment they “announce” anything they are commited and after the MTV awards with dave they know better than to say anything untill AB-SO-LUTE-LY ready to go.

the fact that dave has NOT moved on publicly is telling, but not proof.
the fact that ed planned to take a year off after the 07/08 tour doesnt mean he isnt still “off” duty. he isnt under any obligation, so he’s got all the time he wants. as far as he knows after all the years and frutration and firing mike we STILL gave them 90 million in a year so….

i like to think they are just whittling away at a record… just 8-10 tracks and hope to gawd there’s a producer in there to challlenge them.
