  • Corey

Man, this totally makes me feel like the music could be playing behind a video promoting a new tour or something. Kinda wish it was.

  • John

Everything is so HUGE sonically. I love these things. Dude must be a musician cause all the interaction of the different tunes seem to follow key.
Congrats…Well done.PS> Has Eddie ever heard any of these??

  • Sherman T. Dog

I think it’s a waste of time. meow.

    Exactly!!!

  • chris.omeara

Hearing Dave up against Sammy like that leaves NO doubt which era VH was the coolest- the DLR era, although there were plenty of COOL guitar riffs durin the Sammy era too…

Judgement Day rocks (musically)! Just don’t agree with Sammy’s anti-christ fixation…

  • http://vhnd.net Xavier

WOW! Since Van Halen has not released a new
studio album since 1998 (VHIII) this is
great to hear. It sounds awesome but it’s almost
like paying tribute to some dead legends. Van Halen
has to keep coming up with new creative material.

  • Greg

I prefer his older ones. When he mixed Dirty Water Dog and the Best It solo with The Dream Is Over (I think).

This one is a little “too much going on”. The ending of this one does have a cool original idea to it though. Pretty heavy!

Good stuff Roland! I think you are in Montreal too! Cool.

  • skutch

Amsterdam is such a terrible song.

  • VH Encyclopedia

Maybe Roland is really just Wolfgang in disguise… trying out his new laptop in the studio! Anyway, old, new, whatever, just keep the music alive. Thanks for sharing with us!

  • BIGFOOT1141

As usual Roland does incredible work!!!! LOve all the others but this is the best so far! All three should be posted so everyone can hear them for themselves!

  • ME!!

LOVE that last part, although I personally think the addition of parts of Spanish Fly are unnecessary and kind of take you out of it. If they weren’t there, that would be seriously bad ass. I could listen to that part all day.

Roland, sound mixing is one of my hobbies and I would love to know what software you’re using. It would be super cool if you could share that piece of info with us as well as whether you’re using master tracks you’ve somehow got access to or if you’re simply using parts of the full songs that are available to the general public.

I’d love to have the “recipe” to the last 1 min. 25 secs. and make a longer version. I hear drums from the opening of Little Guitars, but can’t place the guitar parts for some reason.

  • axeshredder

the feeling is gone…earlier ones had soul

  • Mike

    Might be best one yet!

  • booger man

haha that was SICK at the end when Little Guitar Drums started!Cool.

  • Chicken Joe

    best mix yet, awesome!!!

  • Kurt

me likey, me likey a lot! Nice work Roland.

  • Don

Very, very cool! Loved the Me Wise Magic and Can’t Get This Stuff No More. Maybe we’ll get to hear some new music sometime in the not so distant future!

    Let’s hope anyway.

  • jim

Should make one with the chickenfoot songs. lol.

  • Brian

Awesome! Going to listen to VH right now

  • Jeff

LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE IT! It must take a hell of a long time to do something like this , but I am glad you do it ..again…LOVE IT!

  • J5150C

    Ass kickin stuff my friend!!

The end is Ballzzzy with the intro to Fools!!

  • RICK BERDESKI

Great job! Hey Eddie…how about releasing some of your trillion tapes u have laying around 5150? No? Ok thanks!

  • dlrevhsh

  • non-stop talker

OH MY GOD that made my night! KICK AAAAASSSSSS!

  • handymanrockstar84

This stuff kicks ass. Thirty-two plus years of simply the best guitar work all spun up in blender. Cool.

  • morningjakeit

wow great job, man. makes me really wish for some new stuff.

  • Darren from Staten Island

Mr.Roland my hats off to ya. This one was the best yet. More Dave, less Sam and no Gary. Perfect combo for all to enjoy. Please keep’em comin’.

  • CrashDavis

Holy crap, this is the best mix yet … GREAT WORK!

Just one suggestion … no Gary next time.

And how about DLR era-only mix?

  • Reddman

Awesome as always. The EVH sound will always be alive I. Some form long after we are all gone. Rock on Ed

  • Dosch

Unreal…got me thinking about all the great VH I haven’t listened to in a while. Nice work.

  • McQuestion

That was simply awesome. I love both major eras of VH and it’s amazing to hear them like this, a sonic celebration of my favorite band and the riffs that defined my life. Thanks so much.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    Winners come and go….

    VH is forever!

Amen, to all of those who, after listening to this, had to immediately throw some =VH= cd’s in their stereos and start jamming out! All this musical montage does is remind me how incredible the *ENTIRE* Van Halen catalog of music is. Both Dave AND Sammy. I’m glad that the diamond one is back in the “band”, don’t get me wrong, but I have to admit that I loved the Hagar era too.

The key to the success of Van Halen IMO was the collaboration they all brought to the stage. Roth brought the image, the panache, the showmanship and rockin voice. Eddie, of course, had that revolutionary sound. He would bitch about Roth being such an ego-maniac, but it was his vision and creativity that established classic Van Halen. When he quit, Hagar stepped in and they released their highest grossing albums to date. Not arguing who’s “better”, just saying they both deserve some cred.

Point is: Eddie needs SOME direction. He needs to listen to someone except big brother. Roth knew the deal, so did Hagar. Even Warner Bros stepped in from time to time and encouraged Ed to try new things. Ed didn’t want to make videos, but Roth carved a core audience in the 80’s with MTV. Ed didn’t want to try a more conventional picking style for Women & Children First and Take Your Whiskey Home, but the studio suggested he go acoustic and it worked. Ed apparently never cared for Mike’s tone, but Mikey’s countertenor voice filled in the vocal sound and his bass playing, for the record, was phenomenal. IMO

The only forgettable Van Halen album was VH3. And that’s because it was a solo album. Ed only let Mike play the bass in three songs. He didn’t take anyone else’s creative input and it flopped. (Similar situation with the 3 insipid songs on their Best of Both Worlds cd). And THAT is the crux to the future of the “group”; will Ed accept Roth’s input? Cause I don’t see Wolfie bringing much to the table, no offense kid. And Alex is just Eddie’s cheerleader. Plus, the studio doesn’t have the pull anymore.

Personally, I don’t think we’ll ever hear anything new from Van Halen. I still consider them the greatest rock band in the universe. But c’mon, it’s been 2 years now since the reunion tour. And for all that say “no news is good news”, NOPE; pretty sure no news is just that… NO NEWS.

AND BIG THANKS to Roland @ VHND! :-) Keep rockin!

  • Sir Terrence Tuppins

I love these remixes, and this one is the best thus far!

I’m a DLR fan tried-n-true, but love that he takes the best musical bits from the Hagar & Cherone eras and makes them interesting. Those lineups had some great musical bits, even if I didn’t personally care for the end result of those collaborations.

These remixes bring up some points that haven’t been addressed:

    1. Why don’t Edward, Alex and Wolfie release a wicked, thundering and funky instrumental album (ala “Intruder)? VH from any era has always had great beats and bits to sample from. If things don’t work out with Dave again, I’d rather see an instrumental power trio record over some attempt to bring another vocalist.

    2. Listening to these remixes, reinforces the notion (my personal dream) that Van Halen with Diamond Dave should make an album with the Dust Brothers as producers. Let John King & Mike Simpson take the best bits of current/unreleased VH jam sessions, let them reassemble the bits into songs, then give it back to Van Halen for Dave to come up with lyrics for it. And I’m down for Eddie having keyboards and Moog synths on it too!

Ed’s probably too much of a control freak to allow this. Diehard “rock” purists would scoff at the idea of it. It would NEVER happen, but I think the end results would be fantastic! It would “update” them without ruining their sound, vibe or integrity (if that makes any sense).

And if that doesn’t happen, Dave should make a solo record with the Dust Brothers. Or a straight up bossa nova album. Not even joking about this.

  • jim

Eddie doesn’t NEED to do anything.
Looking back at VH and Ed’s career, they’ve certainly done enough.

It’s easy to blame Ed but what if he is waiting on Al,
Wolfy, or Dave in order to wrap up an album? Maybe one of them is seriously sick? Maybe so or maybe not. Maybe it’s just a case of being in your mid-late 50′s and being a multi-millionaire and wanting to take it easy.

  • http://cabowabo.com No Mas Tony

Jim, I know where you’re coming from saying Ed doesn’t NEED to do anything… When I say he “needs direction”, I’m saying that in order for THE BAND, VAN HALEN [If they are indeed still a musical group not a merchandising franchise] to produce decent music together, Ed needs to collaborate with other people. Just like the old days. Not noodling around in the studio for several months over lapping multiple guitar licks for one solo, like his most recent attempts.

If he’s retiring, or sick, or whatever, then good luck and God bless. Would still be cool to release a statement or something for your fans… Especially the ones that support you through good times & bad. (not like me) ;-)

Sir Terrence Tuppins: I agree on the remixes — shit would be hot, but you’re right, it’ll never happen. I did hear from the DLR band guitarist that a Roth solo album is coming soon though. so here’s hoping!

  • Robert

I especially like the beginning of this mix. It has a real cool vibe to it. Great work!

  • Toby Wollenweber

It’s like listening to them for the first time, AGAIN!! Made me pull out my collection of VH and give another listen. Keep em’ coming!!
