Video: Opening night of Van Halen’s 1979 tour!

A look at the upgraded 1979 Fresno footage

Posted by Scott Gilbert, VHND’s bootleg connoisseur, 4/20/10

Recently, the VHND brought you the first of two installments on the recently released upgrades of Van Halen’s performances at the Selland Arena in Fresno, California from September 22nd, 1978 (23 total minutes of footage)and March 25th, 1979 (32 minutes). We recounted the captivating story of the filmer, D.L. Johnson and learned the tricks and methods he incorporated to capture and transfer these historical recordings. Since so little footage from the first two tours actually exists in the hands of collectors and absolutely *zero* footage currently exists on retail shelves from this era for the dyed-in-the-wool Van Halen fans to purchase, this footage is an even more precious piece of history that chronicles their rise to Rock Royalty.

Utilizing the sights and sounds that were preserved by DJ’s tapes, we’re finally able to see just how powerful and ground breaking Van Halen truly was. Though each member of the band played an intricate part in building the Van Halen Dynasty, it was Edward Van Halen’s molten guitar mastery and boyish grin combined with David Lee Roth’s raw, animal stage presence and “Pied Piper-esque” ability to lead his audience on the journey of his choosing that truly catapulted the band to the top. This week, we’ll add footage from the second show from March of 1979 to our menu and place it under the microscope to reveal the many nuggets of Van Halen lore that are stored within their prized frames.

Van Halen were like caged animals on stage during their first tour. Limited to a brief 30 to 40 minute slot each night (often sabotaged by the envious headline acts who dreaded following their younger, more aggressive upstarts), it’s obvious that the band members were just getting into their collective groove by the sets all too abrupt end. Fortunately, this would soon change.

In 1979, on the eve of the release of their second album, Van Halen kicked off their “1979 World Vacation” tour in a familiar locale: the Selland Arena in Fresno, California. On this special night, Van Halen owned the stage and once again, thanks to D.L. Johnson, we are able to relive this night, “…Live in front of your naked steaming eyes!”

shark_guitar_1978In the previous video from 1978, we were treated to seeing Eddie playing the original, “Frankenstrat” in its original black and white striped pattern, before he added the more recognizable coat of red paint and added reflectors, quarters and the Floyd Rose to its road-worn construction. After putting “old faithful” through its paces during, what many fans have described as one of the dirtiest, raunchiest versions of “Eruption” ever captured on tape or film, the sonic dive-bombs and over-extended string bends had taken their toll on his instrument. It’s at this point that Eddie reaches back into his original effects rack which consisted of a World War 1 bomb housing, and cranks the dial on his Echoplex tape echo unit to create the looping, almost “war siren” like sound at the end of the classic solo. He is then handed the classic “Shark” Ibanez Destroyer to launch into their current hit, “You Really Got Me”. This guitar was originally given to Eddie by Chris Holmes of the metal band W.A.S.P. in the early 70s. Eddie decided he wanted to do some customizing to the guitar and took a chainsaw to the body, both creating its unique design and, according to Eddie himself, ruining the sound of the guitar. You wouldn’t know that from listening to the multitude of songs he recorded on their first album as well as the amazing tone in the live video from 1978!

charvel_star_guitar_1980With the addition of the 1979 footage, Eddie Disciples are treated to seeing Edward using a wider variety of his early, classic axes. As the show opens we see Eddie playing the white Charvel Star guitar before it was painted black with his trademark white stripes for the 1980 tour.

snake_dragon_guitarThe latter videos in the series from ‘79 show Edward playing a true rarity: The Charvel Destroyer guitar he had his friend, John Sterry, carve into the form of a dragon biting a snake. This guitar was featured prominently on the cover of the January 1981 issue of Guitar World Magazine and Eddie spoke about the guitar in the April 1980 Guitar Player cover story as well. To the Edward Van Halen aficionado, these live glimpses of their hero playing the legendary guitars most young strummers (like myself) grew up seeing in the pages of CREEM, Hit Parader, Circus and Guitar Player Magazines (just to name a select few), hearing these iconic instruments being put through their paces by the master on stage is likened to a spiritual revival! It’s nothing short of a divine experience.

As a band, we can see a much more confident and cocky David Lee Roth (if that’s even possible!) in what can only be described as “Monkey Hour”. He’s a fireball of energy, delivering a performance he had honed from years of watching the moves of Jim Dandy of Black Oak Arkansas, but taking it several leaps further. The sharp-eyed observer will notice that after opening the show in red with silver, sequined spandex pants, “Diamond Dave” returns to the stage after Michael’s bass solo wearing bright yellow and black pants and a blue shirt slung over his shoulders and then coming out for their closing encore in a full length, silver hooded robe that he quickly throws off to reveal studded, silver pants and criss-crossed suspenders as he launches into their staple closer, “You Really Got Me”. ice-cream-manThis aspect of Roth’s showmanship is testament to his awareness and mastery of the theatrical, “Razzle-Dazzle” aspect of his performance. Utilizing his microphone cable as a bullwhip, executing spine-crushing backbends and gyrating his way across the stage, he is truly the consummate “Toastmaster General of the Immoral Majority”!

The initial headlining performance also sees the early development of Dave’s onstage rap that became just as much of a staple of every Van Halen show as the other instrumental solo spots of the night. In 1978, Dave’s story telling is more scripted than improv; more of a song lead-in than the interactive banter with his minions. His delivery is much more scripted and streamlined. This was most likely Dave creating the nucleus of the “Diamond Dave” role while also only having a limited amount of time on stage to deliver. In 1979, the “Dave Solo” was nearly honed to an art form all to itself. During their first tour in ’78, time was of the essence. But when they were headlining in ’79, they had all the time in the world and it’s clear that Van Halen succeeded in packing their sets full of energy, intensity and unbridled power!

In the first clip from this week’s video feature from 1979, we start off with a 8mm film reel that was never included on the circulating copies of the footage from March 25th, 1979. According to the taper, it was left out due to, “…camera operator incompetence!” None the less, here we have the earliest live version of “Light Up the Sky” that has ever circulated among collectors! We’re also treated to a rambunctious version of “Running with the Devil” in which both Dave and Michael Anthony provide a classic array of trademark yelps and screams as only they could deliver.

1) Light Up The Sky / Running With The Devil

(Part 1 is somewhat out of focus. Eddie’s playing the white Charvel Star guitar):

Another aspect of early Van Halen live shows that was all but abandoned in the post-Roth era were the extended jams that were intermixed throughout the show. In the 1978 footage, we see the band go into a bluesy jam in the middle of “You Really Got Me”, showing Eddie and Alex’s early influence of bands like Cream, extending a segment of a song and just building off of it on the fly. In 1979, we can see this with the percussion jam in the middle of “Feel Your Love Tonight” as just one example. The band members climb the drum riser and surround Alex, each grabbing a stick and banging on a drum as Alex breaks down a rhythm. This was just another example in a long line of spots in the Van Halen show that left the fans enraptured, on their feet and wanting more. It was the spectacle. The excitement. The show was the main event and you were part of it!

2) On Fire / Bass Solo / Feel Your Love Tonight

(Clearer footage than part 1. Eddie’s playing the Shark & Dragon guitar)

Eddie’s solo in 1979 is quite unique in that this was the tour when “Spanish Fly” was the “new” solo, so instead of incorporating “Eruption” into his guitar spotlight, he utilized the structure of the nylon stringed, acoustic solo on record and morphed it into almost what you might call. “Eruption: Part 2”. Pulling out some of the riffs he utilized in the club days and combining it with his Hendrix inspired feedback frenzy, grinding his guitar against the wall of speakers, we’re witness to a variation of Ed’s guitar solo that was never to be heard again.

3) Aint Talkin’ `Bout Love / Eruption / D.O.A.

Even though the camera is focused more on Eddie and Dave, it is evident that Michael Anthony seems to be much more animated and active on stage as well. Possibly, it was the previous years worth of touring which had seemingly taught him the differences between the art of performing on the club stage versus performing on the BIG stage.

Alex, as always, is a powerhouse behind the kit. In the ’78 footage, we get a slight glimpse of Alex’s show closing drum barrage with his drum sticks ablaze, but it’s mostly blocked by fans standing and blocking the video of the lens. Unfortunately, due to the camera angle of the ’79 footage, Alex is mostly obscured from view. Nonetheless, you can not deny the thunderous drive of the elder Van Halen’s back beat!

We could go on for hours and recant the event, dissecting each frame to uncover more and more gems, which in all honesty is what drives the collector to be “completeists” and gather every possible known piece of footage in existence. Those who were there can smell the air, feel the pulse of the arena piercing their bodies as a smile crosses their lips. Those who weren’t there are given a brief window into a time when rock ‘n roll was still unpredictable, exciting and fresh. There was nothing “Put On” about Van Halen. There was nothing “Corporate” about Van Halen. The members of the band were just like you: The Fan. It’s hard to believe this footage was shot over three decades ago and yet it’s still as fresh, relevant and enthralling today as it was then. Van Halen’s music truly stands the test of time in any form. This footage is a testament to that fact.

4) You Really Got Me / Bottoms Up!

  • Pasadena Party Boys

OH FUCK ME — this is the Mighty Van Halen we all love to remember!! Their first tour was supporting Sabbath and they had a limited set list, but in ’79 they were more than ready to unleash their awesome power in force. Look at how long Dave’s hair was. Eddie squeezing so many tasty notes out of his Destroyer. Lots of pretty girls in the front row pumpin’ their fists, and preparing to get with these dudes after the show as their reward!

  • dlrevhsh

man thats cool this show was on the day van halen II came out

  • MICAL VEE

THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BRING ON THE BOX SET!!!!!!!!!!!

  • THE ATOMIC PUNK

    DEATH FROM ABOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • little big toe

“The first night of the second world tour” is definitely one of the best collector shows in circulation. If you don’t already have this show it is A MUST HAVE. Very cool to actually see some footage from this famous show.

  • http://www.cabowabo.com No Mas Tony

Amazing. The photos with the rare guitars are hot! I absolutely love the classic bootlegs… The showmanship and energy everyone has on stage. I think the pinnacle had to be the Oakland CA shows though (not really ‘bootlegs’). You can see how much effort went into them; all the multiple angles and staged theatricks. Especially in the “Hear About it Later” performance; the =VH= logo radiating like it was on fire… then all the lighters go up in the audience and Eddies guitar intro begins. DLR stands in the shadows with one arm raised like an executioner; then right when Al starts on the drums, Mike, Eddie and Dave all jump toward the audience in sync. Man, IMO that captures everything awesome about Classic Van Halen. I saw them play once in 82 but I was just so damn young. I have a hodge podge dvd of the 3 known Oakland performances and then the entire Largo show. I mistakenly said I had all of the Oakland show once and had a mess of people crying, “bullshit!”. LOL, what can I say…

It really makes me wish I was born in ’64 instead of ’74.
    :-(
    Stupid time

And not to say I didn’t love all the Hagar tours either. Just wish I could’ve seen these classic ones “live in front of my naked steaming eyes”!

  • mickey j

Say what you want, but I don’t think the footage looks all that great from the same footage I’ve seen before. We all know they have all this pro shot live footage from their first tours locked away in some vault somewhere and members of VH and Warner Bros. knows where they are… One day they will be released but until then, this is what we get. It seems VH, especially Ed has been very media friendly as of late, since marrying Hollywood P.R. wizard Janie Liszewski. He has made appearances at Nascar Events, Two and a Half Men Tv show, Guitar Hero. I think VH is working their way back into the scene and we could be seeing some exciting stuff from them in the future with the mythical “Box Set” we hope will one day come out, only VH knows.

  • freddiegirl

Ahhhhhhh! Thanks so much for posting; this just gives me chills to watch this! Those first few years they were on tour were just magical!

  • BIG AL OZ

THIS IS VAN HALEN!!! No wonder every guitarist ran for cover when King Eddie arrived. I agree with ‘Pasadena Party Boys’, the notes Eddie was squeezing out of his guitar were notes we haven’t heard before. This is rock at it’s most pure, roar and meanest!! Long live the might VAN HALEN!!!

  • http://www.smokehouserockz.com Scott Gilbert

Hey Mickey J: This footage was shot by a fan, not the band or the label, and the original films that contained this footage was lost in a house fire. This is the master VHS copy from those tapes, so this is as good as it gets. I’m sure the direct transfers will be much clearer, but these streaming videos are not too shabby!

Yes, Van Halen have the master film from the promos that they and the label shot from ’79 and ’81 and they also have the promos that were shot at the Whisky for the first album, but this footage was not part of any of those professionally shot and produced reels. These are the best quality of this footage from Fresno! DJ also is the source for the superb stereo audio recording of the ’79 show as well. Kudos to DJ for sharing!

    Enjoy!

  • Kevin

Ehh, audio-wise i’m less than impressed. The footage is slowed down a tad, lowering the pitch and tempo. I know because i have this entire show’s audio bootleg. When they were ‘restoring’ this footage or whatever they did i wish they picked up on that. However, it’ still pretty sweet.

  • Hey Man, That Suit Is You!

It’s fun to remember how great Van Halen was…. and how shitty cameras used to be back when all was right in the world.

  • Michael D

YES I was there…sort of! I saw VH at the Cal. World Music Fest. on 4/8/79 at the L.A. Coliseum with Aerosmith as the Headliner. I think it was there 6th, 7th, or 8th show of the tour. I was knocked around, stomped on, jumped on, pushed & shoved and at one point lifted off the ground by the masses and lived and loved every second of it and still can remember to this day the AWESOME power of the VH boys. I had the album for only 6 days and sang along with every word. People around me were amazed I knew the tunes.
So, what you’re seeing is the “real deal”. That show was displayed on video screens on each side of the stage and I heard from someone that it was recorded…If that’s true, WOW! One can only dream of the possibility of an actual video from that show.
Cheers to the Boys and the fans.

  • Scott Gilbert

Kevin: I didn’t mean to suggest that the soundtrack on this video was the superb stereo track. The seperate audio recording is available as a stereo audio bootleg. Yes, this soundtrack is off, because, if you read the previous article, it was dubbed on the fly with the film playing and being captured on VHS. This master video is going to be synched with the master audio and put into collector’s circles. I’m sure this will be uploaded and shared as well.

  • johnny

Just like I remember ,1979, Mass quantities of Sex, Drugs and the best Rock and Roll youve ever seen!!!!!

  • Patrick

I prefer the sound of VH songs in D. Sounds that much more killer.

  • Matt from Australia

    Great footage….you’ve done well VHND!!

  • Robert

I remember seeing VH in October 1980. It was Roth’s birthday and they filmed part of the show. Then I saw them eight months later in June on all three nights at Oakland. Years later, I was backstage watching the soundcheck and afterward asked Michael Anthony about the Oakland footage. I asked him if there is anything other than the three videos we all know about. His reply was (and this is a direct quote): “Yeah, there’s some footage tucked away somewhere, lots of it.”

I sure wish I knew where “somewhere” is!

  • Satan’s Jockstrap

This AMAZING footage just proves that there should have been a professional film crew hired to document every Van Halen show from 1978 through 1984. It’s painful to know that most all of those wonderful, bombastic concerts are simply lost to history…damn shame!

  • mjc

it’s ashamed mike’s not in charge of the archives, unfortunetly we all know who is.

  • Panama Red

    WOW, just wow man.
Eddie’s guitar playing is masterful and so fucking awesome. It kills me to think I was to young to experience this back then. And Dave’s voice, holy shit he could wail. He sounded great and bad ass as well. Everything sounded amazing. Thanks so much, again to everyone who made this possible to watch.
Some real magic was captured on tape here. Thank God there were some people back then that realized this was magic and who also didn’t get to blitzed at the shows to pull this off. Lol
I said it on the ‘78 fresno footage comment section but I’ll say it again, it’s a real shame that there wasn’t more taping done at these shows. But according to some of what people have heard here like Robert and Michael D there IS more footage. I can only hope and wait for that material to be released someday.
Damn, this is amazing. They all sound like they are at their pinnacle. Fucking amazing man.
I wouldn’t complain about the clarity of the video or the quality of the audio because you can still hear how amazing their playing is.
I can’t get over at how great Dave sounded. I just don’t remember him sounding that great any other time I’ve heard him Live. Wow, and Eddie is pretty much perfect too and of course there is the best rhythm section in rock and roll as well. Fuck, they were Gods back then.
    Awesome.

It’s a little ironic when Dave was talking about people getting busted because of someone who wasn’t what they appeared to be. Remember his pot bust in the 90′s at the park in N.Y.
Lame ass narcs. How fucking lame is it to bust people for nickel bags. What a waste of resources and tax dollars. Using resources to bust people for totally non-violent crimes. It’s the same as prostitution stings. It does no good. Those prostitutes are back out on the street the next day. Prostitution has been here since the beginning of time and it will be here a 100 years from now. And so will pot. My point isn’t necessarily condoning prostitution, I’m just sayin’ there’s no stopping it, it’s a lost cause just like “The War On Drugs.” Which is complete bullshit.
Pardon my ranting but I’m a little on the fucked up side right now if you don’t mind. HA!

I thought the hat that Dave put on Eddie looked kinda cool, a little like SRV, but I guess Eddie didn’t appreciate it and he flung it off into the crowd almost instantly. Lol.
Also in the last video it looks like the pants Dave changed into last were the pants he wore from the VH2 album pics. (or at least really similar) Pretty cool. It’s great to get to relive this stuff, or I guess it’s not really reliving it for me cause I wasn’t there but you know what I mean. It’s very cool to get to see how it was in the early days. I feel like I was there, and I feel pretty damn good right now and watching these videos is just making it better.
    I love this website!

  • http://none Dirty Duck

My favourite album is VHII hands down…..

If there was one tour I’d want to see first it would be this one!

Thanks VHND for once again taking me back to when rock ruled
    and VH were kings!

  • Robert

There is also live professionally shot footage from the VHII “World Vacation” tour in 1979 (Botoom’s Up!, You’re No Good, Dance The Night Away). I wonder how much of that particular concert (or tour) was shot. If you watch those live videos closely, you can tell that some of the footage (the guitar playing especially) doesn’t match the song, meaning that the film editors used parts of different songs to cut away to, which means that a lot more of that concert (or tour) was filmed than is shown in the video clips. I hope that the missing footage surfaces sometime before I kick off! But I’m not holding my breath.

  • Robert

P.S. Watch the Panama video. There are live concert clips in that video. You know damn well that Warner Brothers/Van Halen filmed a lot of those concerts. VH was on top of the charts in 1984. Where’s that footage stored away?!!!

  • Aftershock

Thanks, Scott and VHND for this footage. This was a magical time in VH history and it’s a crime that there’s not more of this type of footage available. I saw Van Halen for the first just five days after this Fresno show. It’s a night I’ll never forget and it changed the way I experienced music forever. These clips remind me of that night, knowing it is close to what I myself witnessed a few nights later.

Robert — If I’m not mistaken, the live clips inserted into the “Panama” video actually came at a concert that was filmed by MTV as part of its Van Halen “Lost Weekend” contest. Whether or not MTV filmed the whole show, or just the parts around where the winner was brought out on stage, I don’t know for sure. I think the full “Panama” concert clip from that show is available on YouTube. At least I’ve seen it there before.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    Panama Red:

“I cant get over how great dave sounded”

Keep that in mind next time you hear me give someone shit about all that “dave could never sing” nonsense….
I respect you and some others around here cause you love the band for all aspects (thats pretty hard for me to do…lol) and you have respect for the roots. Dave was not a flash in the pan…..and niether was classic VH!

When you have all the years that have passed, people forget how music once made them smile. How music MEANT something more than #1′s and grammy awards. It became a part of your life.

Van halen’s magic is that once you listen to it….you’ll never hear anything like it again.

Eargasams and goosebumps baby! Bottoms up!

  • Matt

This is awesome. Thanks for posting vhnd.

  • MICAL VEE

Noel monk, VAN HALEN’S manager back in the day said in a interview years ago that they had filmed each tour ’78 thru ’84 but didnt know if it would be released. It’s out there, but the question is will we see it?!!!!!!!!

  • MICAL VEE

Duck,i’m like you, when people say dave couldnt sing i would say bullshit!!! He wasnt the greatest singer but he had a great rock n roll voice and the moves to go with it!!! Hands down one of the greatest frontmen ALLTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://none Ilivewithfools!!!

Dave was smart enough to realize that a great singer just standing there is about as exciting as watching potatoes grow.He put on a show. Also note that post-Van Halen bands had to look cool, period.None of this nerd band crap we still have going on were the members look like they’re still in the clothes they slept in the night before.Only the strong survived in VH’s day.You had to play AND look incredible. Also the chicks were incredibly hot.Really hot.Not this shit today were they take a so-so chick, put some make-up on her and TELL you she’s hot.All this to say,we’ve gotten away from this type of world where you had to work your ass off to make it and Van Halen certainly did.

  • YZ

For those who don’t know this was a time when disco was big. For so many in the crowd this music was way over their heads but they found greatness when they saw/heard it and the rest is as they say, history. I say thanks to Van Halen for opening our eyes/ears. All these years later and it’s still a big deal.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    MICAL VEE:

As always brother….great to hear from ya!

Exactly! Dave was never the greatest singer, but did he ever try and be? The cat had pazzazz and a style that was over the top but cool at the same time. As much as I truly love every member of the band….David Lee Roth was the piece that made the band fully complete. I always laugh to myself when I think back to Rolling Stone magazine calling dave: “the most obnoxious singer in rock history”. I fuckin’ love it! Even they didnt have a clue… (cant stand the mag anyway)Dave was playing the role….he was being a rockstar. He was also one of the first lead singers to interact with the audience the way HE did. (Best example:US FEST) The cool part is, I had read once that he was Diamond Dave even as a teenager. The exact quote? “He was a rockstar from the min he woke up in the morning and until he went to bed.” And I BELIEVE that! Honestly MICAL? I listen to a lot of music….own hundreds of tapes and CD’s….into a lot of different groups…but I’ve NEVER…NEVER come across another frontman with so much personality and flair. Winners come and go, legends are forever….thats the truth!
To sum it up? Dave made me smile…..

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    ILivewithfools!!

Your post is dead fuckin’ on brother!

It should be a rule….look up the words “Great frontman” and there should be a picture of Dave.

As far as the bands today? No substance and no balls.
Everyone wants to be everyones best friend so they can sell a record.
“Hey! I’m a rock n roller but maybe if I hang with jay Z I get him to rap on my next album!”

    FUCK THAT AND FUCK YOU!
    DIE POSER’S DIE…

Thanks for letting me get that out of my system!

As dave would say: so many wanna be’s never gonna be’s….

  • Scissors Kick

This is why I get so nauseous when I hear you Van Hagar fans say stupid stuff like — “Sammy was a better frontman than Dave”. GROW A BRAIN!! Just watch this Fresno footage and it’s obvious that Diamond Lee was the ULTIMATE FRONTMAN who took showmanship to the highest level possible. Nothing Sammy ever did will come close to this display of power and swagger. Dave had the baddest screams and growls, jaw-dropping aerial kicks, and still looked sexy for all the hot chicks in the front row! You can tell he absolutely loved being the frontman for the coolest rock band on planet Earth!!

Now as far as bootleg footage, it’s well known from past interviews with Mike Anthony and former VH manager Noel Monk that there is a TON of concert footage from 1978-1984. I believe at one time it was in Noel’s hands but obviously now it collects dust in Eddie’s vault. Dave admitted in a Jim Ladd interview in 1982 that the infamous ’81 Oakland shows were filmed in their entirety and that’s how we got to see the 3 promo videos from that tour. Eddie needs to do the right thing and unleash all this juicy footage from the vault and give it to the loyal VH fans so hungry for it! Led Zeppelin did right by their fans — now it’s time for Edweird to do the same!

  • freddiegirl

I keep watching this…love hearing D.O.A. even if it’s only a little bit of it! D.O.A. is one of my all-time fav VH tunes! And yes, Dirty Duck…Eddie made my jaw drop at his sheer wondrous virtousity..but Dave made me smile. :)

If these guys ever put out one of those big box DVD things with rare tracks etc It would absolutely kick ass.
Unfortunately I dont see that happening anytime soon.

  • MICAL VEE

You combine the greatest frontman ever with the greatest guitar player ever, throw in the best rhythm section and backing vocals ever, mix it all up and you get…VAN HALEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This was in the freakin’ 70′s man and guitarists are now catching up to what this guys was doing back in the day…..No wonder these guys haven’t put out a new album. They’re still waiting for everybody else to catch up…I hate to say but no one will catch up to eddie. Just when u think anyone has. Bring out the archives and shut everybody up..What guitarist are doing now, eddie did back then…He got bored, end of story. He’s got nothing to prove.

  • Johnnyh

This is why I am and will always be a fan, you just saw it folks ! Nothing like that before OR since!! Does anyone remember if Alex has ever put a V-8 engine in one of his bass drums?? I swear I saw a picture of it many years ago

I was at first night of the oakland 81 shows on june 11th. I can tell you all…THE ENTIRE SHOW WAS FILMED…i was five days out from graduating high school when i saw this remarkable show..no i was not drunk nor high..i remember every camera and how the guys played it up in front of them…its a shame that this is probably sitting under tons of dust

  • guy

one more thing…i remember leaving this show thinking i was gonna see it again. MTV had came out that summer and the following year in 82 they would air concerts on fri or sat nights. Journey filmed a show in nov 81 in houston..that very concert is one i watched on mtv in 82..here is where i thought for sure the van halen oakland show was gonna air on mtv.never happened. and what happens a couple of years ago? journey releases the houston 81 show on dvd. its bands like journey, led zepplin and others that i have respect for, for releasing timeless live archive footage for their fans. Hell theirs more live early footage of Hendrix than their is of Eddie..and hendrix was being filmed 10 years earlier..a massive dissapointment for all diehard vh fans..im just glad i was born when i was so that i was able to see the early tours.

To guy Good points VH must have tons of old stuff laying around but for some reason control freak ED wont release it. Im sure if it was up to dave it would be in our hands already but I guess its alot better to be in VH and take orders than voice your opinion and get the boot.

    Hey Duck:

VHII, your favorite, is worth owning because of tracks 4-9 Bottoms Up thru Women in Love. Great stuff. The other tracks You’re No Good (Linda Ronstadt did it with feeling, VH shouldn’t have messed with it), Dance the Night Away (pop-schmultz at best) and Beautiful Girls (she had a drink in her sand she had her toes in the sand…and some people make fun of Sam’s lyrics) are weak, just about as bad as Hot Blooded by Foreigner. Ouch!! (that’s a come-back for those of you who compare Van Hagar to Journey…)

    Guy:

You’re right about Hendrix early footage. Palladia or VH Classic (can’t remember which) every now and airs “Hendrix: American Landing”, which is a HIGH QUALITY recording of Jimi’s gig at Monterrey in 1967. We’ve all seen Wild Thing
where he lights the guitar on fire…but American Landing includes other tunes like Wind Cries Mary, Hey Joe, Highway Child, etc. The VH bootlegs shown here are worth a look, and great when you use your imagination, despite the poor audio/video quality.

I gotta say that it still blows my mind that no one ever thought of having early vh tours taped live on video. When vh came out ed was touted an instant guitar genious, a virtuoso. No one had an impact like him since Hendrix. Then why on earth was this kick ass guitarist and his untouchable band not captured on film?! I hope Neil Zlowzer comes out with another vh photo book. Pictures are all we may have…and I know Zloz must have a ton more in his archives.
