“Cool EVH sighting @ Grainger!!!
I work for the company Grainger…and this was posted on our intranet today (3/2/10)…very cool!”

“Rocker Eddie Van Halen knows where to go to get it done! The guitarist stopped by branch 450 in Burbank, CA, last weekend after looking “anywhere and everywhere” for a particular clamp for a drum kit. “Eddie was WOWed that we had the part he needed, and we were WOWed because he was Eddie Van Halen,” said Branch Manager Jay Gomez.”

  1. freddiegirl says:

Ahhhhhhhh….I live in Burbank! Ok…I’m going to be a geek and say that’s pretty cool.. :)

  2. Mark says:

Why wasn’t Al out getting his own damn drum clamps!

Maybe they are actually writing and recording. I know, it is a crazy dream I have!

  3. gman says:

How can anyone say anything bad about him, ever!!!

Eddie Van Halen with a smile on his face, I give that two thumbs up!!!

  4. Kimberly says:

Mark its a crazy dream I have too!!=)

Haha soon enough..at keast we know he is alive n kickin..can’t wait to hear exciting news SOON(?) Lol

  5. Russ says:

It would have spoken volumes if Dave was with him…….

  6. Matt says:

I think Wolfie can play drums?

  7. Karl says:

^ Do you have this image that Edward and David go shopping together?

  8. Russ says:

No I just hoped they were taking a break from rehearsing the new material….

  9. ben says:

Cool to see Ed out and about!

  10. Karl says:

    :-)

  11. Russ Thorn says:

I wouldn’t get too excited about this.

I have a feeling this clamp was for Wolfgang. He has always been a drummer first and foremost than he is a bass player. He only plays bass in VH because there happened to be a convenient vacancy. I’m sure if it was for Al than he would be more than capable of doing his own shopping.

  12. Sean says:

Ed is shopping for drum parts because he is back on drums. Father Al has joined Stryper to play gods music. Hagar is back on guitar and Cherone is replacing him in Chickenfoot. It’s all I could come up with on such short notice…

  13. Aldo says:

Eddie is rad…that is so cool.

  14. steve says:

surprising to see someone of Ed’s stature out buying his own kit – most guys would send a runner/ tech. Good on him!

  15. Joshua says:

That’s because Ed only trusts himself to get the right part. Hell, he knows more than all his techs put together! No surprise at all to see him doing this in my opinion. Good stuff!

  16. Robert says:

As the big brother, Alex made Edward get the drum clamp for him. While Ed is out running errands for Alex, Alex is at home practicing the electric guitar.

Ed should have learned his lesson as a teenager when Al swiped Ed’s drum kit as Ed was out throwing newspapers earning money to make payments for the drum kit.

I predict Wolfie and Al will give Ed the boot. Ed will start a new band called Chickenleg with former Mammoth bassist Mark Stone.

  17. Dawn says:

I wish Eddie would come in where I work!
Needs that part for the tour!!

  18. phillster says:

    everybody`s a f`n comedian

  19. Rick Pride says:

Wow. That guy is so lucky. He is touching the coolest guy in the planet. I’m soooooo jealous!!!!! King Edward!!!!!

  20. RA 8 1 2 says:

So funny to see everyones comments with the who what when where why and how eddie can just pop into a store! He owns a recording studio. Im sure it is not fully staffed. If he needs a part, he drives down the hill and gets it. He is human like all of us. He takes shits like all of us. Although maybe his has flecks of gold in it..

  21. dirty face kid says:

he,s giving a thumbs up,read into it what you will,im hoping for the best..

  22. swingin' sinner says:

Probably something for wolf since his birthday is coming up!

  23. skutch says:

Probably just looking for a clamp for his drum kit and someone took a picture. Stop trying to read so much into this. Ed is happy, so be happy for him.

  24. Steve says:

It’s my belief that sometimes it’s nice to feel like a normal person. Just the fact that he actually got out, looked great, looked happy is wonderful. There was a time when he would not show himself in public. I have a feeling that something is going to pop sooner or later. Ed will want to release something with his son, for that I am absolutely certain. Hang tight folks

  25. Fab says:

I am a long time VH fan (30+ years) but some of you guys are just pathetic… “King Edward”. How about schizophrenic, back stabbing Edward? Enough of this horsesh!t. We only care about 2 things (in this order): 1. New disc 2. upcoming tour.

  26. SCAR says:

Shit, let’s give it up for Grainger!!! I always heard you can get a lot of stuff at Grainger but, who would thought they would have the right type of clamp that EVH needed for a drum kit. Like DLR song, “hey you never know”!!!!

  27. kapp says:

he is married now…..needs exuses to get out of the house. Uh honey I have to go out for a bit.

  28. dude says:

@kapp – too true, too true

@steve – I think you’re right about Ed wanting to do something with Wolf – be it VH or something else. Which means we’ll hear something one of these … days, months, years!

Anyway, fun shot for that Grainger dude.

  29. Dante says:

I’m in Burbank too but I only see Jay Leno around town.

  30. Reggie Hayse says:

I think that’s cool!!! I would love for someone like Ed to come into my work. I’m a pressman for a printing company and would love to print their next cd insert!!! Call me Ed!

  31. gadal595 says:

    Excellent Robert, excellent…

For VH new music, Eddie himself said in “Guitar World”:
“…People think they know what I should do. A lot of fans are complaining that VH should put out a new record now. Everybody is going Eddie should do this, Eddie should do that. I’ve got all kinds of music that I could put out if I wanted to, but they don’t take into consideration the other members of the band. Maybe the singer doesn’t want to do that. I play classical piano. I play a little bit of cello, I write all kinds of different music that certain singers or certain musician don’t want anything to do with…and if you put something out, the 1st thing people say is that it isn’t as good as the classics.

“People forget that we put 3 new songs on “Best of both worlds” in 2004. The reviews didn’t even mention these songs…

“Why go to all the trouble, spend all that time in the studio and spend tons of your own money to record a new album when people are only going to complain about it or ignore it or download it for free on the internet? We might not record something new.”

Eddie, there is still tons of fans that will welcome this new music and love it. And please make Sammy stop showing off with his new guitarist and tell everybody that you’re old. You’re still 9 years younger than him. He rocks so you can too.

Thank you Eddie for everything you did.

  32. Mike V. says:

I guess Eddie’s a little more of a technical expert than Alex, maybe Al’s drum tech knows something we don’t. And maybe Al’s that clueless as to where to buy parts for a drum kit.

  33. Joe says:

I get the impression that he’s always recording ideas. I wish he’d upload some teasers on the web for the diehards.

A lot of us would be thrilled to hear any of his tidbits, whether they are classical piano, cello or tuba….I bet the VH attitude would be evident.

  34. Hamm I Am says:

ed has a studio with everything in it. he can play the drums as well don’t forget. he’s probably just getting a part for his own studio kit. Or Wolfie’s as many have mentioned. Or maybe he’s running errands to keep himself busy and away from drugs and booze. Good on ya, Ed!

  35. No Mas Tony says:

Stay tuned for next weeks post, where Eddie is seen at the local Wal Mart getting tampons for Jane. . .

“Rocker Eddie Van Halen knows where to go to get it done! The guitarist stopped by Walmart in Burbank, CA, last weekend after looking “anywhere and everywhere” for Kotex with wings. “Eddie was WOWed that we had the part he needed, and we were WOWed because he was Eddie Van Halen,” said Branch Manager…”

  36. shawn says:

wow. talk about picking over the scraps.

    what a sad comment thread.

  37. axeshredder says:

yeah..i guess he needed it for the new songs hes writing….zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz..stop trying to look so deep into it..same ol same ol..you would think his brother would know where to find it…lmao

  38. VH3 says:

See Everyone, he is getting parts for Al’s drums so they can finish recording that Album we all have been waiting for. They forgot to mention that Dave waited in the car because they were double parked.

  39. freddiegirl says:

Dante…yep. I’ve seen Leno alot but never Eddie.

  40. axeshredder says:

    on the guitar world post…

thats a cop out if i ever heard it….spend money on recording…lmao…really?!…how much does it cost compared to the thousands that would sell whether bad or good…..what happened to his comment that a new record and tour was in the works after Chickenfoot? ..Lies Lies Lies…and fools who believe it..im no sucker…Chickenfoot rules over VH….ill be the first to praise EVH if he ever remembers how to play and stops caring what people think..thats weak

  41. Fab says:

If I ever meet him, I hope to have the balls to say… “Didn’t you used to be Eddie Van Halen”.

  42. Viking says:

I’m thinking that he’s doing another VH ‘solo’ record, similar to ‘VD III’, but since he already kicked Mike out of the band and can’t sub his own bass parts without pissing off Wolfie, he’s secretly building his own kit to overdub Alex’s drum tracks at 3 a.m. LOL

  43. Kimberly says:

if you guys dislike this man so much why don’t you get a life and stop posting on the FAN website. This is not for haters. No one EVER thought they would get together again with Dave anyway let alone go on tour..but look what happened. Eddie can do what he wants!! Its his life…why should he give a crap what his whiney fans are thinking? All we do is whine anyway. The man has enough money to live and be happy. If he goes on tour at all it would be for us..and with all of us complaining…what makes you think he is going to get it together. SO SHUT UP.

  44. freddiegirl says:

Kimberly, I don’t hate Eddie…not at all. He is my guitar hero and he will not be topped. He’s the reason I started playing guitar at all. Don’t lump us all together. I want new music as much as the next person but if he never recorded another note I’m happy for the music he did leave us.

  45. VH3 says:

Kimberly, nobody hates ED. some of the people who post here gripe a little too much about dumb stuff and, some make some jokes, but it is all in fun. Some of us even take jabs at each other. it is all good… I just think everyone wants to here some fresh material.

  46. phillster says:

How many records have you made and broken in your career
“Axeshredder”? Better question:HOW OLD ARE YOU???
Be carefull,-you just might end up being one of those bitter over-opinionated/frustrated failures of a guitar player like the millions that have been left in Eddie`s wake.CHKNFT will NEVER replace what =VH= created.
    PERIOD!!!
    “Chickenfoot rules over VH”???-
    are you even hearing yourself????
You`ve just officially joined the group of”weak haters”
who know NOTHING about the TRUE IMPACT that this band has made.
If and when =VH= does release a new album,I`ll bet
You`ll be one of the 1st pricks to compare it to
“Satch`s VH”(i.e.CHFT)I`ve been listening to”Satch”since”Not Of This Earth” came out(I`m that old)He`s great, but after 20yrs,he`s predictable at best.
It was a safe&predictable choice sam&mike made for a lead guitarist,+ At that point in his career to turn down the opportunity to be in 1/2 of”VHGR”would be flat out stupid.
Sam&Mike KNEW they needed a BIG NAME “virtuoso”to save their careers and they found it.Good for them.
As for me;”I`ll Wait” for the real stuff,-the
“Can`t Get This Stuff No More” stuff.
That`s what =VH= is, a rare blend of perfect “stuff” that only comes out when the time is right.
    Like good weed
    Which reminds me…..

  47. Keith says:

ah yes … more useless banter by haters and know it alls. Please VHND. discontinue the ability for comments as they serve no purpose. TRUTH.

  48. Big J says:

You idots he said a new album was coming, he didn’t say when. I’m sure they want it to be good so they are making sure its done right. Chickenfoot was a good album but couldn’t have been better, they were clearly in a rush to get it out probably because they didn’t know how long Chad would be avaliable. If Chickenfoot would of took more time the album could have been much better, cause when you hear it they no doubt have the potential to be great. Anyway point is Van Halen doesn’t have to get the album out by a certain time, so when it happens, it happens. I just hope its good. WHO DAT!

  49. Big J says:

I meant to say the Chicenfoot album could have been better

  50. DiamondDean says:

it cld be time to rock!! great to see Eddie smiling , hope hes happy

  51. SCAR says:

That’s what I’m talking about Kimberly – give em hell!!! Jeepers axeshredder, don’t play the Foot rules over VH game, that’s just lame!!! Can’t we enjoy both??? I’m sure that’s why the music was made in the first place!! Shit, there is nothing like kicking back with a cold one, a shot of cabo and a fresh packed bowl, while jamming to either the Foot or the bad boys from Pasadena!!!! Let the music do the talking!!!!!

  52. Simon says:

“Why go to all the trouble, spend all that time in the studio and spend tons of your own money to record a new album when people are only going to complain about it or ignore it or download it for free on the internet? We might not record something new.”

“Why go to all the trouble…”

  53. 51yr old fan says:

who gives a shit about who made the biggest impact on music or not. the music we love from ed was influenced by great musicians before ed came along. maybe without clapton there is no evh. the bottom line is there hasn’t been any new music and maybe there won’t be. just because he leaves the house and someone gets a picture doesn’t mean squat. at least i have the old stuff and chickenfoot.

  54. Dirty Duck says:

Well, by reading a lot of the negative comments around here, I keep picturing a lot of you looking like the guy above posing with ed….

    The negativity is ridiculous.

It feels good knowing I have more in my life going for me then sitting around a website bashing someone who’s done more in his lifetime then many here will ever experience.

No wonder I havent had much of an urge to visit here or post lately. Some of the comments are uneducated garbage from people who dont know shit about the band!

At least I know where I stand as a fan…..do some of you?

Thanks to the people who make this site worth the visit. You know who you guys are ;)

To the rest of you wannabe rockers: Pffffffffft

  55. dude says:

I don’t have the CF album and I don’t intended to get it. The snippets I’ve heard are decent and I totally respect them for doing what they love. But no matter how good they are, they’ll never have the impact that VH did. The guys in CF are too old to appeal to the younger crowds to the same degree a 20-year old version of CF would. That’s just how things work. Most VH fans truly enjoy the classic VH because it’s associated with their youth. The fact that it is incredible music is absolutely critical too but I really think it’s definitely a factor of when you were introduced to it. For myself, I was introduced to VH around FW but the first VH I ever heard was Eruption. I was totally floored and hooked (“You had me at that first pick attack!) immediately. After that I got VH II and WCF. Then over the next few years I grew with VH, culminating with 1984. I continued to enjoy the Sammy stuff but as I was older it had a lesser impact.

Where was I going with all this BS? Oh yeah, as I’m in my 40s now, I think it’s great that the older guys of CF are putting out good rock tunes (let’s face it, the world could use a bit more rock these days!) and new VH on top of that would be even better (partially to bring back that great feeling of youth).

I guess I just don’t see the point of comparing VH and CF or saying one is better than the other. They are quite different and will each have their own legacy – with VH obviously having the more respected one (if you must compare).

My final ramble of the day is that I really hope that VH doesn’t tour again without new music to promote. That is something that will certainly chip away at their legacy. As I’ve said before, the VH of my youth never gets old – my kids are even getting familiar with the lyrics to “Take Your Whisky Home” – so I’m good to go with or without new tunes. Ed’s just a guy, not perfect (are you?) and probably just doing what he wants. Maybe he just loves making music with his son? Can’t see that as a bad thing. Sorry, was that two “final rambles”?

Rock out. Have a good Thursday.

  56. No Mas Tony says:

    I like Scar’s idea.

  57. just the facts says:

What is the big deal about Ed buying a clamp.Lots of retired folks go out to the store before it gets dark.

  58. dirty face kid says:

ed will go to all the trouble, not for the money, not for the fans, but for wolfie ,he will do it.there is no way ed will retire without putting out at least one kick ass cd with his son.ill bet ed has been dreaming of that for a long time..hang in there folks, when we get it, it will be good..i also think the thumbs up,and the smiling face are very good signs..

  59. dirty face kid says:

P.S ,IF DAVE WAS NO LONGER IN THE BAND,we would have heard about it by now, fo sho…the vh stars are aligning.i can feel it way down here in the garbage can..

  60. hip_replacement says:

He needs to grow long hair again

  61. Jeff says:

Wow, if that quote from gadal595 is true (I haven’t read the article), it doesn’t bode well for new VH music. It makes me kinda wonder if Ed isn’t getting some feedback from this site considering all the complaining that goes on here. I’m done.

    - No Mas Tony, I felt that your Walmart story was in pretty poor taste. No mas!

  62. ImTheOne says:

A couple of years ago everything everybody was dreaming of was a reunification with Dave and a tour with all the classics. Everybody was crushed when it didn’t happen in 1996, and everybody – apart from the Fatty Middler crowd – was crushed again when it didn’t happen in 2004. Back then, if anyone said: “hey, tonight you gonna see Van Halen with Dave performing all the classics, only drawback being it will cost you a 1000 bucks, it’s gonna be a nostalgia act and Mikey isn’t gonna be there”, NOBODY would have thought twice and wasted a second to get the tickets in complete excitement! Now suddenly it’s all nothing without new music, it was “only” a nostalgia act (bad bad bad), it’s only for the money, Eddie is this and that and doesn’t care about the fans, WTF? Ungrateful bunch. Let the man live his life, and if he has ego problems so what? He’s human. YOU never had ego problems I guess, you never fucked up, were jealous, envious, broke ties with a friend? If you don’t like his stuff don’t buy it. And seriously, what’s all this Chickenfoot nonsense? I don’t give a shit if they make 100 albums and “care” about their fans, I wouldn’t go to see them if I got paid, because they are BORING as hell. Chickenfoot doesn’t get you laid and never will. All this whining here about Chickenfoot and how “great” they are is just the envious revenge of the nerds. Sore losers that opted for the eternal second place finish and now take every chance to dish the dirt on true greats. Anybody who seriously thinks Hagar deserves mentioning next to Dave and Satriani deserves to be mentioned next to Eddie has some loose screws that can’t be fixed by argument.

Dear Eddie, I hope you will release some new music for us to enjoy, if not, hey, so long, thanks for all the great songs and memories, thanks for making up with Dave and thanks for sending Haggar to the pasture.

  63. Russ Thorn says:

Concerning the quotes posted from the guitar world article, hasn’t it been pretty obvious that Ed has felt this way since the failure of the VH3 album? People blame Gary Cherone but the sad truth is that the album was ALL Eddie. Gary just sang the vocals and was a complete puppet. Seriously, would the album have been any better with Dave or Sammy singing those songs? Hell no. Ed won’t allow the chance of his ego suffering another failure like that. Hence I don’t think we’ll ever see another new album.

  64. Kimberly says:

Oh freddiegirl I wasn’t talkin about you! Haha I can tell you are a fer sure VH fan…I am talkin about people with NOTHING good to say..you know? I mean I love this band TO DEATH..it hurts me to see people talk about em the way they do. I know you’re frustrated, but my goodness…they are people too..

Eddie even said something in an interview about how whiney his fans are…said it differently, but you think people would stop and just deal with it…

  65. Kimberly says:

SCAR– Haha brothuhh I love your posts. SO TRUE! Here’s to the real VH fans;)

  66. hunahuna says:

What’s ridiculous is the joy, hero worship, and conjecture that comes forth in this thread just because he picked up a part. “He knows more than all his techs put together!” “This is great!” Blah blah blah. But I do appreciate the humorous posts!!

  67. No Mas Tony says:

@ JEFF: ¡Que se joda! vete a la mierda!

In poor taste?!… ME!? — never! Hey, all I’m saying is we get this persona of Ed as the “guitar god”, with a legion of servants attending to his every whim. So when he’s seen making a mundane stop at an industrial supply chain… I just find it kind of amusing; Ed running errands around town. And how many of us married dudes have had the emasculating experience of grabbing a box of ‘feminine hygiene products’ for our honeys?

So, NO, not a slam against Ed. In poor taste? Maybe

  68. Dirty Duck says:

    “ImTheOne”

    Fuckin’A brother!

Glad someone has the balls to not tip toe around the truth!

    Keep on rockin!

  69. pushtoshove says:

Ed…Apparently you read this stuff….Thanks for inspiring me to play guitar..Thanks for doing the tour with Dave and Wolfie..Thanks for your music…Hope you record a record again …hopefully with Dave

  70. t1m says:

ImTheOne said it all, I agree completely!

  71. andym says:

ImTheOne – The fact that you are still using Van Halen to try to get laid leads us to believe you have a pretty pathetic life. Do you still wear your DLR spandex when you talk to girls in public places??? I’m guessing Dirty Duck is your wingman on these excursions???

PS – Sounds like someone is a little jealous of all the Chickenfoot fanfare. haha!!!

  72. Tommy Boy says:

Nice SCAR…I usually begin with “Planet Caravan”, some Floyd then “Push Comes to Shove”,(holy shit, btw, if you guys don’t know and love this tune, you’re missin’ out), “Dirty Movies”, “Hear About it Later”, “One Foot Out the Door” and from then a plethora of any VH tune that comes on the iPod. I crank my guitar to 11 and play along to all of ‘em and have a blast. It would be much better if I could find a drummer that had Al’s mentality and precision, but alas, they are (very) few and (very) far between. If I were Ed, I would embrace weed with all that I am, never drink again, never smoke another cigarette, zone out and just played ’til I died. Peace guys n gals…

  73. dirty face kid says:

IM THE ONE, YOU ROCK BROTHA.BEST POST IN A LONG TIME.

  74. Dooley says:

So, ImTheOne steps in it (paraphrasing…I like Van Halen so c’mon baby let’s boink…yeah, that’ll work every time), Fatty Midler, Hagar is already out to pasture, etc. Who’s spewing the hate now?

And Kimberly, does it also hurt you when some people on this site talk about Hagar & Chickenfoot the way they do?

    Right on andym !!

  75. Jack says:

Edward looks happy. He should be, his wife is HOT!!! Consumating their wedding, or new music…..no need to discuss further.

  76. Dirty Duck says:

    andym

I’m not allowed to agree with someone?

  77. SCAR says:

Im The One, open your puny little mind, most of us can appreciate the Foot and all versions of VH!!!! If you need music to get you laid then you are more pathetic than your parents predicted!!! Besides, I bet The Red Rocker still gets laid more than you Gomer and he is 62!!!! Later hater!!!!

  78. dude says:

Warrant blows VH out of the water!

Come on, let’s vent on some morons who actually think this way instead of on our passionate VH selves!

    Rock.

  79. Dirty Duck says:

    andym:

Seriously man? You need to get off my dick.
I dont remember you having the balls to call “anyone else” out around here that doesnt agree with your views…
    What’s up?
You that insecure with yourself that you have to pick on “me”? Jeez man….

  80. Dooby says:

You’re right Jack- Spend hours making new tunes or continuing the honeymoon with a hottie…..i know where ill at!!!!

  81. Dooby says:

‘be’ between ‘ill’ and ‘that’……sorry too much beer.

  82. Dooby says:

No!!! between ‘ill’ and ‘at’….man im outta here.

  83. Dooby says:

(And no im not drinking beer at 3 in the afternoon. Its 11pm where i am)

  84. jd0777 says:

Hey, check out the new Lynch Mob CD, Smoke and Mirrors. At least George Lynch is still kicking ASS!!!

  85. freddiegirl says:

    Hugs Kimberly…. :) Let’s make the boys jealous and have a hugfest… ;)
I agree, I’m happy that Eddie looks healthy and seems happy…his addictions and problems a few years back just gave me the sads. Whenever I think of the alternative, when I think of how things could’ve gone for Eddie a while back I’m just happy to have him healthy… :)

To the person who said CF was carrying the rock torch; yes, it doesn’t hurt to to have them giving rock music a quick punch in the arm.

  86. sammyvanroth says:

imetheone(not)….if the pasture is a great life, great family, happiness, successful and profitable business ventures , i would like to be sent there too!

  87. Adrian says:

I’m the One you are my hero great comment

  88. Jim says:

People that have an ego or “ego problems” generally tend to be in the top 1% of the most successful people in the world.

  89. ClubfootKolby says:

BRING BACK SAMMY AND MIKE THEN VAN HALEN WILL BE GREAT AGAIN

  90. pushtoshove says:

Can you Imagine being a musician….Playing the same songs every night? For months and months???…must be hard to keep up the integrity …and the love…

  91. gde says:

    ClubfootKolby…

That is the best advice on this board thus far.

Dave was good but it is over.

Unfortunately, Sam n Mikey wouldn’t touch Ed unless there was some serious soul searching and rekindling on Ed’s part.

  92. skutch says:

All this drama over a drum clamp. I’m going to bed.

  93. andym says:

DirtyDuck – Where have you been man??? Try reading the rest of the thread…you’re not the “only one I picked on”. Maybe we’ll buy you a hankie too.

    Dooley – Thanks!

  94. gde says:

David Lee Roth looks great…but sounds dull.

Wolfie is a good kid who needs to grow outside of VH. Go play in the trenches and master the instrument.

Sam is hard to work with.

Ed is hard to work with.

Mike is not hard to work with.

Al is not hard to work with.

Ed really sounds great and looks great. I hope he continues to do well.

Al still commands the drums. the professor of VH. Now and forever.

A Van Halen album with Sam Mike Ed and Al is what is needed.

However, Ed needs to give up some of the reigns. Play some Sam stuff. Play some other stuff. Play with a special guest. Let Wolfie do a cameo. Loosen up. Get it back. Have fun with it. Close with Won’t Get Fooled Again or some old Cream tune. It’s ok.

It’s up to Ed and Sam and Mike and Al to finish what they started.

David Lee Roth is not the future of new music.

It is a greatest hits tour.

And its too early for that.

Another late night with an insomniac brain. Now It’s time to waste yours. No seriously I don’t mean to aggravate anyone who gets annoyed with long posts. Just skip over it. Just waiting for the sleeping pills to work their magic, and I’m kind of in a bad mood.

Simon – That was pretty interesting how you pointed out the part where Eddie said “why go to all the trouble”
I wonder if it really has become “trouble” making new music for Eddie. Maybe those comments really were an insight to how he feels now. I Hope not, cause if that’s really his attitude about making music, than he forgot what music was about, and we’ll probably never hear any new stuff. Maybe he was just in a bad mood that day or something. We all have days like that. Like today for me.

I just don’t get his attitude in that interview though.
There are plenty of us who would listen to anything Eddie released and who wouldn’t download his songs illegally or whatever he was complaining about in those interviews. So what if not everybody likes his new mucic. That’s no reason to quit making music. Just make the music for you.
And of course Eddie isn’t in jeopardy of going broke anyway from people downloading his music. I mean, of course he should get paid for his music and paid well but c’mon dammit.

I think those comments in that interview may be quite telling of how he looks at it now. I mean at this point in his career you would think that if he was still passionate about making music he really wouldn’t care that much about the money. Do you see what I’m saying? Hypothetically speaking, if he wasn’t going to make money either way from doing what he has been doing (not making music) or putting out tons of music but not profiting financially either, don’t you think he would choose to create new music anyway for the love of it, being a musician.
Artists create whether they get paid or not.
And other people who are passionate about their jobs usually don’t really care that much about the money either (unless they are preoccupied with money for some reason, which a lot of people are)

I remember Larry Bird saying “They didn’t know this but I would’ve played for free.”
He said that because of the passion he had for playing basketball.

I wish Eddie would forget about money, wanting praise and recognition, the critics, and all the other stuff that gets in the way.
Damn, Life is too short for all of that bullshit. Can you imagine how many great movies, books, and music that would have never been made if people would have been to afraid of what others might think of it? Or if they were worried that someone might not pay for it or “ignore it.”

I predicted that I would be bitching in my next post about Eddie and I was right. My last post about Eddie was full of praise. It may seem like a have multiple personalities or big mood swings but that’s just how I work. I think it’s probably human nature, the ups, the downs. I try to make most of my posts positive but sometimes this shit just comes out. I don’t mean to be on the attack. Shit happens.
I’ll probably be in a better more positive frame of mind tomorrow after I get some f**king sleep.

Jim – I don’t mean to get to deep and philosophical, maybe it’s the sleeping pills (starting to kick in) but when you said:
“People that have an ego or “ego problems” generally tend to be in the top 1% of the most successful people in the world.”

I think that depends on how you define or perceive success. If you mean that the people who are in important positions such as people who are in charge of giant corporations, profitable businesses, military leaders, supreme court justices, and so on and so on then yes, you’re probably right. But not everyone defines success in that way. Some people might define success as doing something they love everyday.
Some people probably perceive success as meditating for 10 hours a day to find peace or connect with a higher power, which would basically earn them zero financially. But finances and bank accounts mean nothing to these people. It’s all in how you perceive success.
And in all honesty much more important and meaningful things can probably be achieved if you lose the ego and humble yourself like the buddhists and yogi’s do. I’m not implying I’ve achieved those things because I haven’t achieved anything anywhere near that, trust me. But it sounds good. And in the end it’s probably worth a whole lot more than the material stuff we can buy from being “successful.”
I think everything is about perception.

Just some of my thoughts on ego and success. Not trying to get on my high horse, I’m just an insomniac schlub typing comments on a Van Halen fansite at 2:30 in the morning. But maybe someday I’ll find Nirvana too. Except I’ll probably get distracted and lost along the way….

Sleepy time now. Apparently I need chemicals to shut the hell up.
Chemicals to wake up, chemicals to turn off.

  102. 51yr old fan says:

i don’t get it please explain. some people on here complain about sammy and mike doing the things they want eddie to do, like give us some kind of info or music or anything. till the day i die i don’t know how you can’t like sammy. all he is doing is making music. if you don’t like the music thats cool but don’t rip on the man personally he was obviously good enough to tour with vh twice and dave once and another pretty good guitar player and bass player like to hang with him. not to be a dick but when i see the posts by and about kimberly the “sweet emotion” video by aerosmith pops in my head. (the ending. but i could be way off.)

  103. PasadenaKid says:

I think what a lot of you dumbos in here are forgetting is that a drunk, pissed-off Eddie is the only version that can make brilliant music like he did from 1978-1984. We all know Eddie didn’t get along with Dave and he relieved stress by drinking a couple six-packs of Schlitz talls and wailing on his Frankenstrat until wee hours of the morning. Great art is not produced by people who feel happy all the time. Roth knew how to push Eddie’s buttons and bring out the best in him.

Eddie always said he got along with Sammy (until the very end) and the result was forgettable sappy love music designed for soccer Moms. Lately all I been hearing from Ed is how content he is now with his new wife, Wolfie playing music with him, and Dave being his “new brother”. A happy Eddie is NOT a musical genius!!

It’s just too bad Edward pulls all the strings in Van Halen now. He got Dave on a tight muzzle and that’s not the dangerous unpredictable Van Halen we grew up with. I guess we’ll just have to be satisfied with nostalgia tours and occasional noodling or porno soundtracks released sporadically. The once-mighty Van Halen — came in like a lion…..going out like a lamb. Sad.

  107. Simon says:

Panama Red, I do hope you got some quality sleep. I love the fact that you got exactly what I meant. It’s sad that EVH’s apparent attitude towards making music has changed the way it has. PasadenaKid’s post is pretty insightful in my opinion.

I found this quote from the great late John Lennon…Lennon is shown criticizing people who rehash the past in their own work. “Once a thing’s been done it’s been done, so while this nostalgia — I mean for the ’60s and ’70s, you know, looking backwards for inspiration, copying the past — how’s that rock ‘n’ roll?” Lennon says. “Do something of your own. Start something new, you know? Live your lives now. Know what I mean?”…Meet us in the future not the pasture’….Nuff Said

Damn Tommy Boy talk about a winning combination- Pantera, Pink Floyd, Van Halen.
A man cut from the same cloth. Unless you were referring to the original “Planet Caravan” by Black Sabbath which is cool too.
I don’t know where you got your name but “Tommy Boy” is also one of my all time favorite comedies. I miss Chris Farley, he was so awesome, so f-ing funny.

@dude- I understood your post and everything but when you said:
“I don’t have the CF album and I don’t intend to get it. The snippets I’ve heard are decent and I totally respect them for doing what they love. But no matter how good they are, they’ll never have the impact that VH did.”

I just thought maybe you’re looking at the big picture kind of wrong. Why compare Van Halen to Chickenfoot like that? I mean I guess they’re somewhat similar (having two former members of VH) but not really. I think of them as being two completely different and separate bands. There are quite a few other bands who have formed with ex bandmates from other bands. “Them Crooked Vultures” “Atoms For Peace” just to name a couple of the most recent.
That’s why Chickenfoot didn’t play VH songs, Sammy solo songs, RHCP songs or Satch solo songs because they were trying to establish themselves first and foremost as a separate band apart from any other bands they might be associated with.

And also most bands won’t have the impact VH did but that doesn’t mean you should exclude yourself from giving them a listen. You would miss out on giving a lot of bands a chance if you always compared them to what impact that they may or may not have compared to VH. You know what I mean dude?

I think you pretty much came to that conclusion anyway later in your post, but still, I thought I would just throw that out there dude. Maybe when the next Chickenfoot C.D. comes out you should check it out, especially if VH hasn’t released anything yet and you’re jonseing for some good new rock music. I love VH but I really dug most of the songs on the Chickenfoot C.D. too because they are a good rock band as well, different but still good rock and roll.

    Later dude, enjoyed your post.

Simon, Skutch – Cheers and thanks for having the mental fortitude to tolerate my shenanigans.

Much as it’s a shame Eddie doesn’t appear to be doing anything, these appearances show he’s still alive. It’s kinda good to know.

  117. Bridge says:

Pushtoshove- Right the F on! You pulled up the perfect quote to describe the difficulty in pleasing fans of the old while forging on. The problem is that fans of the old need to be more accepting of the artists current chosen direction. I know people bash the shit outta VH3, but I still enjoy the effort. Take “Ballot…” for example. I’m not thrilled with the vocal delivery or choppy odd chorus Gary is hacking out, but the Fair Warning-esque groove in the beginning is very memorable and cool. The time game that the band plays is always the most hurtful part of the situation to the fans, but once we grow up and get past it, I’m sure we’ll all enjoy whatever they come up with in some way I’m sure.

  118. Karl says:

Wow, Ed pops down the shops and gets a hundred and seventy odd comments…

  119. Rich says:

    @ImTheOne

Appreciate where you’re coming from, but I’ve never understood how liking the Van Hagar years makes me less of a “real” fan. Sometimes it seems just like its all deep-rooted opinion, and sometimes it seems like people can’t open up their minds and just appreciate the music.

I’ve said my part, all this over a drum clamp! Mental.

Kudos to Panama Red for some more essays, I really do enjoy them. I’ll get back onto mine as soon as something worth talking about comes up again (:

jeez, 120 comments bout Ed buyin a friggin drum clamp.

  121. jd0777 says:

All this silense from the van halen camp about an upcoming album and tour is a bit bothersome. You would think if the boys were working on new tracks they would let us all know that something is happening. I remember Eddie last year around May and June talking about once wolfie graduates, and he gets married then after that the band would start planning on getting back in the studio. However ever sinse then, NOTHING! The fact that not one word has come out of the VH camp is bothersome, but not surprising. I just really hope and pray that we all can be rock off our asses with a new album. But if it’s not to be then we have all had a good time witnessing the Greatest Rock & Roll band that ever was. One last thing. As far as the Dave years, and the Sammy years are concerned, and lets not forget Gary cherone. From the very first album to the present, and everything in between Fucking Rocks. I personally like everything VH ever released. No matter who the singer was. Thats a testament to the musicianship and Raw talent the brothers have. Without the brothers there would be No Van Halen no matter who the singer’s were. Van Halen is the Greatest rock band, and will be the greatest rock band that ever was, is, and ever will be!!! Enough Said!!!

  123. fan your losing says:

Hey ED dont make promises you dont plan on keeping about a new album in 2010! The reason some of us “loyal till the end ” VH fans get bent out of shape and annoyed are simple, we buy your music, we buy magazines, we buy clothing, we constantly check the internet for news about our beloved band, and on and on. Sure for the ones who say if we dont like it get lost or quit bitchin or Eds allowed to do what he wants or quit thinking of yourself – we go to this trouble and leave these comments because we do care and want more from “our band”. I’m sorry if thats such a bad thing. When Ed had cancer we all hoped for the best. Its just to bad the VH members dont care to show us just a little in return like ” hey fans this is whats going on presently or something thats shows you care about your fan base. You know it sure is frustrating knowing other bands keep their fans updated but ” our VH ” will do what they do when and if they do it without regard to us is kinda shitty. It must be a bitch to put out an album every 4-5 years on average!

  124. Jeremy says:

    PanamaRed,

Enjoyed the reading! Keep them coming!

  125. Karl says:

fan your losing, Ed never made ‘promises’. Certainly not explicit promises. He’s been pretty loose in what he’s said. In fact, if you want to pick over what he’s said the firmest statement he’s made was probably “We might not record something new.”

  126. wooten says:

I wish Eddie would quit worrying about what people will say about his new music. Just put it out for crying out loud. People would’ve done the same back in the day if they had the means to (ie computer).

  127. Karl says:

wooten, Ed’s just making excuses because he’s gone dry. Saying things like “What’s the point, people are just going to complain no matter what you do.” is just plain stupid. Duh, no we won’t if it’s brilliant. Yes we will if it’s crap. Simple.

  128. ImTheOne says:

Karl, I’m not sure that someone who “equally” likes Haggar and Chickenfoot can really appreciate the difference between brilliant and crap… just kidding folks, lets not get all uptight again :)

In all fairness, though, I disagree. I don’t think he’s just making excuses to cover up having gone dry (do real musicians ever run dry forever? I mean he’s not exactly a one hit wonder, and he seems to have successfully battled some of his worst demons). I guess what could be burdening him is that we do all see him in a certain way, the king of ten fingers and six strings, the prototype gunslinger guitar hero, genius wizard of fun tasty hardrock… while in fact he’s maybe something else than that and sometimes on a different trip making different music, yet confined to this role by his fans. Let’s face it, whenever he would release something else he would get knocked down, people would be crying “crap”, because it’s out of the scope of what we would appreciate from him or it doesn’t display the chops and sound we expect from him…nobody wants to see him play keyboards (at least not for long). So he’s kind of a prisoner of his 22 year old self. And even if he tries to deliver this to his fans (reunion tour with Roth playing the classics) he gets knocked down for grabbing cash, delivering no new music, and doing a nostalgia act (which everybody has been wanting him to do for years!!!) So people indeed complain no matter what, its not hard to see if you look around on this site. And the fact that he is clearly disgruntled and that it gets to him only shows he actually cares. And about the lack of information and updates…he always said he hates interviews and talking, so that’s just the person he is, he’s just not the publicity and attention whore other people are.

  129. Dooley says:

    ImTheOne

–It wouldn’t make Ed a “publicity and attention whore” if he kept us updated better. If he hates interviews, his publicist/wife Janie could put some blurbs out on the official site. So much for that.

–If there were yet another nostalgia tour without new material he would get definitely get knocked down for that. But most of the feedback on the 2007-08 tour was positive, with some understandable complaints about no Mike and the appearance of piped-in back vocal tracks. But overall, the last tour was very well received.

–If a new album were released and it’s good (how could it not be?) it will be nothing short of monumental. And it would be great for the rock n roll business in general.

–It’s very easy to like Hagar and Chickenfoot immensely at this time. They’re doing what a band should be doing. Good for them.

  130. No Mas Tony says:

  131. Dooley says:

    Bueno, No Mas Tony !

Was it Roberto Duran? I’m guessing.

Eddie looks great in the pic, thanks for sharing dude. Amazing Eddie gets bashed in this post, what would you haters have said if he was caught buying a garden hose at a hardware store..that he had hung it up, thats what.. At least he is still having something to do with music. While there is no timetable for a new release, just be happy Eddie has not gone the way of Hendrix and Rhoads yet, he is still alive and every day that remains true, us true Van Halen fans have a reason to be happy and hopeful.
