This headlining gig by Sammy Hagar comes a few years after concluding his tenure in Montrose. At the end of a tour opening for Alvin Lee and Ten Years Later, the “Red Rocker” got to headline this Winterland gig, which was the Tenth Anniversary celebration of KSJO, the San Jose-based FM radio station that, at that time, had a hard rock format. A native West Coaster (he was born in Monterey), he seems genuinely excited to be playing to such a large crowd: “This is the loudest goddam audience I ever heard in my life!” he exclaims at one point.

An epic opening jam showcases the group’s live chops before launching into “Red,” a signature Hagar cut, and a set of rousing, beer-fueled rockers with a couple of ballads (namely, “Free Money” and “Little Star”). “Bad Motor Scooter,” a song that Hagar wrote while frontman for Montrose in the early ’70s, is the 17-minute centerpiece of the show, featuring ample guitar and keyboard solos, as well as spoken words of encouragement to his audience to get excited. Excited they would be: This show featured some famous guests, one of whom had never played with Hagar before. For “Rock Candy”, guitarist Neal Schon of Journey came to the stage, and laid down fiery leads for the set’s final three tracks. Although this was their first show together, Hagar and Schon would later collaborate as part of the short-lived HSAS (Hagar Schon Aaronson Shrieve, which also featured bassist Kenny Aaronson and drummer Michael Shrieve). Then, for “Gimme Some Lovin,’” Eddie Money and his guitarist, Jimmy Lyon, joined Hagar’s ensemble onstage, bringing affairs to a whole new level. This show was also the second-ever performance of “Free Money” following their show shortly prior at the Concord Pavilion.

Hagar points out in the introduction to “I’ve Done Everything for You” that he was releasing a live album that had recently been recorded at Winterland, All Night Long, which would come out later that year. He would become a bigger star in the years to come, scoring a major solo hit in 1984 with “I Can’t Drive 55″ and taking over as the singer in Van Halen following David Lee Roth’s departure in 1985. Although it’s doubtful that a song like “Cruisin’ and Boozin’” could ever be a hit today, Hagar continues to play sold-out shows with the Waboritas, and runs a successful tequila brand and restaurant chain, Cabo Wabo.

Sammy has been living the rock n roll dream for so long! Awesome!

  • SCAR

Gotta love the Red Rocker classics!!! It’s Fry (smoke the good shit) day, time to get your weekend buzz on!! Party on!!!

  • Tommy Boy

Very cool stuff! I do solemnly vow to not look back at the comment section on this article for fear of seeing the endless ridiculous comments about it not being Van Halen news, not new Van Halen music or from people that don’t like Sammy. Maybe there should be different “News Desk” so that annoying fuckers could go there and moan and whine with each other.

  • DLR

Great tunes. Keep ‘em coming. Anybody know the status on Chad and the Peppers as to if they are going on or is he coming back to Chickenfoot soon?

  • TheTruthHurts

Tommy Boy: Here, here! Your last sentence is the best idea I’ve heard today!

  • ROB5150

When Sammy was in VH, I bought some of his solo album, well, very low profile rock music. Sam owes everything to ED.But do not get me wrong, I loved Van Halen with Sammy (I always hated those who called them “Van Hagar”).

  • jc

DLR-Chickenfoot is touring with Kiss in late summer

  • DLR

Thanks jc – I enjoy Alex best, but it’s good to know Chad is back. He is a great guy. That should be a great ticket. Hopefully we will hear more on Dave recording with VH soon. Might shape up to be a great year for music.

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G

I’ve always dug hagar’s music, be it in VH, solo, or now, Chickenfoot. Everyone bitches about his time in VH, or his business ventures. WHO CARES!!!!!!!! The guy is 60 and can still rock and roll better than most of these new bands today. And I think he just plays music for fun. It sure doesnt look like he needs the cash. Keep Rocking, Sammy, in whatever you do!!!!!!!!

  • Tony

I hafta wonder when this article was written? … surprised they didn’t mention Chicken Foot?!?!
“Hagar continues to play sold-out shows with the Waboritas”
Do the Waboritas sell out shows really? — no dis, I’m seriously curious.

He honestly sounds just as good now as he did in ’78! Maybe even better.

Can’t wait to see more foot in Summer 2010!

    Keep rockin Sammy!

  • Sean

I’m all about the Mighty VH, but Sammy and Mike are what make rock and roll enjoyable. They don’t get too involved in the bitching and moaning, they just keep on rocking. I’d rather hear guys music that are out there having fun and enjoying what they do, than wondering if the greatest guitarist of all time is going to give his fans what they want. Drama is for daytime tv!

  • ben

Sam’s stuff outside Van Halen is NOT worth listening to.
Not Waboritas stuff, not CF stuff, not anything.

Wished Ed was sober when Sam came back in 2004, things would have been great.

  • jc

To clarify, I was addressing DLR regarding Chickenfoot. Only Chickenfoot is touring with Kiss.

  • Panama Red

There is another Sammy Hagar concert on that website from ’77. Wolfgangs Vault is a cool website. I’m definitely going back to check out some other bands live shows too.
Sammy has always played with great bands. I’d love to hear some stories from fans who got to see some of those shows back in the 70′s and early 80′s with Montrose and Sammy’s solo bands.
I remember way back in the day when I had a subscription to the “Inside” magazine there was an interview with Sammy talking about how he would like to experiment on a solo album with a more trippy and psychedelic vibe. I waited for that but it never happened. Too bad, I bet it would’ve been cool. You never know with Sammy though. I hope he does that album someday.

  • Kayser Sozay

Ben’s opinions outside Van Halen are NOT worth reading.
Not Waboritas opinions, not CF opinions, not anything.

  • http://vhnd.com 51yr old fan

hey rob5150, ok we will see how smart you are. what does sam owe ed? it is the opinion if lots of people that sam may have saved ed and vh! but i will keep an open mind if you can respond intelligently.

  • Steve

Sammy just flat out knows how to write great songs. And he is great live. Extremely consistent. He never ever stops. What more could you ask for?

  • mjc

somebody put ben in a straightjacket.hagar should be in the hof for his great music outside of vh.keep on rockin sam.

  • Jim

I kind of agree with Ben.
Comparing VH music, Sammy’s stuff outside of VH doesn’t exactly light the world on fire. I could probably count the songs I like and that I’d listen to more than once on one hand. If you rank Sam’s top 25 songs, all but 1 or 2 would be VH songs.

I like Sammy though. The guy is a legend. He is not normal. The guy has so much energy and get up. It’s amazing how much music he’s made and performed.

  • UncleMeat80

    Ben -

In response to your criticism of Sam, I have one word for you: Montrose. Sam’s first band.

If you havent already listen to this –

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s6BTTJo1KmM

    and

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loaxDYWPZ54&feature=related

    especially this – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JF0rHlXAGYc

If it werent for Montrose’s debut record, you wouldnt have the sheer awesome sound of VH I

Ted templeman produced both montrose’s debut album and VH 1. He was hired mainly because of his great work with Montrose.

Montrose really is a underrated band who deserves more respect than they have gotten. You would not have VH, or Iron Maiden it were Sammy And Ronnie. And that is the bottom line.

  • http://news@vhnd.com TubbyTuba

Gotta give Ssm, his user friendly props. Think, I actually heard him refer to himself in an interview one time as just that, user friendly. After all that has been said and done, can’t argue with that assertion. Sam, Sam’s the dude, too

  • http://none Dirty Duck

Believe it or not I really enjoyed this. Anything from the 70′s always brings a smile to my face. Lets be realistic here…the musicians from that era are priceless. I never got into sammy solo cause the first rock group I was exposed to as a kid was VH with roth. Thats where my main focus was for many many years, and to say Im a die hard fan would be putting it lightly. But I’ve always dug some of sammy’s solo stuff. “I’ve done everything for you” / ” Baby’s on fire” / and “I’ll fall in love again” are just a few to mention that I think are great stuff. What can I say: I’m a sucker for anything live from the 70′s. I love the stage set ups, the lighting, the outfits, the attitude, and of course the music! There was just something magical about that time man.

  • halenhagar

This was awsome, I saw sammy in 89 with VH and saw Sammy in 95 with VH and saw Sammy in 04 with VH then saw Sammy with Chickenfoot 09 and the guy still sounds the same as he did then back in 1978.
    Keep on Rockn RedRocker !!!

  • Panama Red

For anyone to say Sammy has never made good music outside of Van Halen hasn’t listened to very much of it or doesn’t have a wide range of musical interests. Widen your scope of music, man. Montrose was a great 70′s rock band. “I Got the Fire” Awesome!
I love their take on the ‘Stones song “Connection” too.
And “Rock the Nation”, “Bad Motor Scooter”, “Space Station #5″, “I Don’t Want It”, “Make It Last” and of course one of the coolest and most classic rock songs of all time “Rock Candy”.
Not to mention the huge catalog of Sammy’s solo stuff. I don’t like all of it but I love a big chunk of it. I could list a ton of Sammy’s solo songs I love.
There are two songs I can think of off the top of my head that have made the hair on my arms stand up. “Crossing Over” by Van Halen.
And “Peephole” by the short-lived band “Planet Us” which was on Sammy’s “Cosmic Universal Fashion” album. The story behind that song is so horrible. I remember the news story when it came out. Sammy said he can’t perform that song anymore, it’s so dark and disturbing and it brings him down to much.

  • Don

hey ben… personally i think your full of shit! reguardless wether he was w/ montrose/vh/cf, he still kicks ass still to this day! sam is and always will be the red rocker from st, louis mo.

  • ROB5150

Considering that express my opinion does not mean thinking of being more or less intelligent than you all (maybe my English creates misunderstanding, sorry), I do not know in USA but in Europe no one knows a song by Sammy Hagar solo, on the contrary if you say the name Van Halen many people know what they’re talking about. When VH played in Italy in ’93, even the national news talks about it, and here rock and roll is not respected as in other countries. This is not to be a rating for Sammy, but it is undeniable that without Van Halen he would not be what he is now.

…Duck, surely ‘ 70 and ’80 was magical decades for rock music even with some inevitably fall, as in all things …

  • phil

    very cool tunes!

  • Panama Red

I’m sure it’s possible for some people to love Van Halen and not like a single Sammy Hagar solo song. It seems very unlikely to me, but I’m sure it’s possible for some people to feel that way. Sometimes I’m a little to opinionated. I try to keep my overly opinionated views in check but obviously I forget to sometimes.
ROB5150 – I have a hard time believing no one on the continent of Europe knows a single Sammy solo song. Sammy has toured all over Europe several times starting in the early seventies. What do you mean you’re from Europe anyway? I’m not trying to be a dick here or be disrespectful to you but there are like 50 countries in Europe. Are you from Russia, Spain, Turkey, Germany? Oh maybe Italy, I just re-read your post again and you mentioned Italy. Okay maybe the circle of friends you hang with in the town in Italy you live in don’t know who Hagar is but I don’t know how you could speak for all of the countries in Europe. Also ROB5150-Sammy was famous and selling out concerts before he was in Van Halen in case you weren’t aware. He doesn’t owe everything to Eddie Van Halen. He struggled and worked his ass off like everyone else did back then to make it in the music industry. Being the lead singer for the Amazingly Awesome Legendary band Van Halen made him more of a household name and sure as hell didn’t hurt his career but he already had a successful music career before he joined VH.
Dirty Duck- I think it’s pretty cool having read your posts and knowing you are a DLR Van Halen era fan and not a Hagar era Van Halen fan that you can still be honest about liking certain Sammy songs. You are not just completely biased and don’t insult Sammy unjustly like some people do without reason or just because he’s not David Lee Roth. People that can keep an open mind about everything are much more interesting to listen to and to talk to.

  • huh

the local radio station big 105.9 keeps saying that vh is recording in the studio with dlr…..has anyone heard this?

i love both forms of VH….dlr and sammy….why not just enjoy both and stop bickering?

  • FAMAC

Early proof Sammy was a generic rocker. He’s always working it to the limit, but there’s nothing there.

In the Van Halen world, he’s Star Wars: Episode I.

  • Panama Red

huh – I think you have the right attitude. I should just chill out. Sometimes someone’s conflicting opinions are worth dignifying with a response, like FAMAC’s comments for example.

  • SCAR

I’m laughing at all you negative haters!!! Shit, it’s Super Bowl Weekend, you know, time to PARTY, what’s packed in your bowl? Toke it if you got it!!!

  • MN5150

If Sammy is not in VH in 1986 – 1995, we would have had VH III much sooner. (I sort of even like some tunes on VH III, but that’s clearly their weakest effort on the charts)

Whether you like it or not, Sam doesn’t owe Ed a thing, nor does Ed owe Sam. They needed each other, and it worked for a while. Look at the album sales.

Note – How much you like or dislike any album isn’t the issue here. I’m simply stating the charts don’t lie. Take the emotion out of this absurd argument.

  • ROB5150

My opinion is that Van Halen was a band of world scale, like, for make some names, KISS, LED ZEPPELIN, GENESIS, QUEEN, and few others. For sure someone knows Sammy solo stuff, when he joined Van Halen I knew exactly who was he, even I never bought his albums, but in terms of large popolarity he was nothing compare Van Halen. And the level of quality of his SOLO carrer (mean not with Montrose), was an average r’n'r with no high peaks. My friends and I bought some solo album of Sam, because we was (we are) die-hard VH fans, but honestly after a few listening the opinion was “It sucks”

  • Dooley

    Duck:

That’s great. And I get it how you’re such a Roth fan that nothing else will do when it comes to VH. But what about what Sam is doing nowadays? Have you even listened to the CF album? Wouldn’t you add “Sexy Little Thing” and “My Kinda Girl” to the list of Sam songs that you could enjoy?
If it even matters, I’m still keeping myself stoked about the possibliity of a new VH album w/Roth. With all that collective talent,I know it would be good and I’d be all over it. In any case, keep on rockin’.

  • Dooley

    Scar:

Game time less than 45 mins. Right there with ya man. Best way to watch the game, for sure.

  • mike69/88

Did anybody catch the CBS promo with Sammy’s “I’m on a Roll” used for background music. Best promo during the Super Bowl IMO!

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    Dooley:

I dont want to start a post thats going to lead to another sam sucks discussion. Believe me, thats not where I’m going with this. Not that many here will give a crap, but I just never got into sam after he joined and left VH. I like some of his old stuff (70′s mostly) because I truly loved many many bands from that era. First heard “rock candy” by Montrose when I was a teen and loved it. Because of that actually bought the first montrose album. I’ve never once said that he was talentless. I just always felt he reminded me of buffett as i’ve grown older. Especially with the first waborita’s album (*Red Vodoo). He looked like a beach bum surfer dude drinking tequila and that’s not an image I relate to. I grew up with rockstars that looked loke rockstars and lived the role. Sam (as he aged)just seemed….fake. I just didnt FEEL anything he did. I’m going to leave it as that dooles cause I really dont want this to go the wrong way. Just answering your question.
When you grow up with VH being a big part of your childhood it’s hard to look at any other band the same way. Especially when the frontman is just as loud and crazy as ed’s guitar wailing behind him….
But enough! You got my point im sure. Just keep on rockin’ and keep the faith in good ol’ rock and roll!

  • Pete

DUCK…once again, I respect your opinion…you’re a Dave-fan but you pick and choose what you like from Sammy’s catalogue.

This place is littered with sheep that think you have to like one guy’s tunes and the hell with the other guy’s. I’ve never understood that, especially given Dave and Sammy’s vast solo and VH catalogues.

That’s another reason why your opinion matters more than most.

  • Pliskin

I like Halen and Hagar. I also listen to Billy Idol, The Chemical Brothers, Beck, and Depeche Mode.

Everyone is different and has different musical tastes.

It’s funny to see all this bickering about Hagar’s solo work. If you like it, who cares?! If you don’t like it, who cares?!

    Enjoy what you enjoy.

  • VHIII_1998

no matter who is in VH, you cant touch hagar. that stats says it all.

  • Rocko smohko

OMG he even sucked in 78.wolfgang should go play with him cuz he sucks too…

  • halenhagar

Duck, WTF ? are you saying that if you break up with a chick and start dating someone else in a relationship your not going to respect your new chick????
Your wife must love that attitude?

That’s if you have ever ventured out of your parents basement to get a life without David Lee Roth?

Sammy was good with Montrose and better on his own, but I still think he was BEST with Van Halen, and visa versa. CHICKENFOOT is a good band but it’s not Van Hagar.

  • phillster

Seems like the”livin`in your parents basement”jab is pretty
popular with the kids who blog here.Probably`cause they want
us to Think that They Don`t.I`m guessin`that halenhagar, andym, and the rest of these whiny bastards are in a dormroom somewhere thinkin` that they`ve done something with their lives. If chickenfodder is the answer to your prayers, run with it.Save the cryin` for your mamas
