The Top 10 Classic Albums That Accidentally Ruined Music

From Spike.com:

Over the years, a select number of albums have changed music forever. These are the albums that affected listeners worldwide and completely flipped the game upside down. On the other hand, some of these same legendary works also unknowingly helped create some of the worst musical blunders we wish we could all forget.

10. Rage Against the Machine – Rage Against the Machine
9. Appetite for Destruction – Guns N’ Roses
8. Legend — Bob Marley
7. Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols – Sex Pistols
6. Paul’s Boutique — Beastie Boys

5. Van Halen – Van Halen

We all know that Van Halen I is one of the most important and influential albums of all time and that it single-handedly helped usher in the glam metal/hair metal era that ruled the entire 1980s. Even though Halen destroys almost every single band of this genre, their undeniable influence helped create a buttload of trash that totally devolved rock.

One of biggest elements to blame in this situation is Eddie’s rapid guitar-playing chops and teeth metal attitude. His guitar-playing sent shockwaves through the world of rock ‘n’ roll and made a bazillion other guitarists/bands think they should try and follow suit. It would have been amazing if most of these acts were even half as good as Halen, but we all know now that this was very far from the truth. Hair metal/glam metal was more decadence than substance and almost ruined popular music in the process. Oh, and if anyone out there tries to say that the Bulletboys were awesome, my head might just go ahead and explode, y’all.

4. Nevermind — Nirvana
3. Straight Outta Compton — N.W.A.
2. Thriller — Michael Jackson
1. Frampton Comes Alive! — Peter Frampton

  • JimmyT

Agreed. Stupid article! How about some new VH! How much longer do we have to wait? Eddie, are your waiting for your Medicare card? WTF!!!

  • Canes_fan5150

seriously bro. It sounds like you have the racial problems.

  • Steve

That is the most absurd thing you could say. My wife is asian and we are a multiculture family. Stating that different races cling to different types of music in general is not racist. You are racist if you point out the obvious? I think the problem is that you are unrealistic to say that music is not cultural. Music is extremely cultural and each country around the world had different types. That makes someone racist? Please…

  • Robert

Hey Panama Red, if you really dig old school country, check out a band from Reno called Hellbound Glory. (www.helboundglory.com). You’ll dig them!

  • Steve

    Push come to shove:

I sure hope that you did not take my posts wrong. I respect your opinion and really don’t want anything but peace

    Thanks!!

  • Panama Red

Robert – I looked them up, listened to a couple songs. Pretty cool stuff. I’m gonna look them up some more when I get the time. I always appreciate it when someone turns me onto a good new band, Thanks dude.

  • vanhalendlrband

Don’t know if anyone mentioned Pantera. We all know how much he Van Halen and Fair Warning meant to Dimebag Darrell.

There are countless other good bands that spawned from Van Halen, as well as a huge fad that Van Halen never usually gets any credit for until i’ve seen this list. It got out of hand but there was a lot of good bands that didn’t sound like van halen that also directly derived their sound from them or a portion of their sound. I see Motley Crue is coming to GM Place in Vancouver, I mean whether you like them or not they’re still selling out arenas and they looked up to Van Halen when they were starting out. Kirk Hammett learned things from Satriani that were directly derived from things Eddie Van Halen brought to the scene, maybe not everything but you can see the butterfly effects that Eddie made on guitar and the band itself, like Alex’s drumming, or the overall sound of the instruments.

  • Canes_fan5150

Steve. I wasn’t about you. I was agreeing with your post

  • chris.omeara

Back to the article, even when record companies tried to make copy bands to “re-invent” the Van Halen formula, they all looked stupid (BulletBoys, Quiet Riot) doing it.

Roth had a certain charm and charisma that they couldn’t duplicate, and Eddie despite his faults had a certain un-duplicatable incredible quality as a guitarist.

Together, they had a classic chemistry like the greats (Page/Plant, Mick/Keith, Daltry/Townsend).

So they could pull it off without looking stupid (until the Sammy days)…

  • pushtoshove

Canes_fan5150 ….It’s probably hard for you to understand…My wife is 5 2′…Blonde ( naturally blonde ) 120 lbs and big blue eyes size 5 dress and classy…and i am an AMERICAN of mexican descent …And i still get dirty looks sometimes when I am with her and people still try to get me to work cheap ( I am a State liscensed general contractor )…If i sound a little hateful then I apologize…Rock Music to me when i was 11 and my world was falling apart WAS AND IS SALVATION..Yet I still got the more than occasional dirty looks when i was at a Rock N Roll party.Rock n Roll is not White people’s music.IT IS EVERYBODY’S MUSIC.Saying it is “White People’s Music” Is something Racially Divisive People Started out of Ignorance of other culture’s…My family called it white peoples music which was ignorant.Tell that ‘white peoples’ music stuff to Carlos Cavazo , or Eddie Van Halen for that matter or JIMI HENDRIX! Hendrix was at a crossroads when he gave an interview stating he was breaking barriers by playing loud psychedelic music and being black.Chuck Berry the father of Rock n Roll guitar is Black.Eddie Van Halen is part half Asian and Everyone of you here is mixed something that came from another country.People who say “White People’s” music make us all look ignorant.Nothing personal but stop the high school, uneducated sounding statements.

  • pushtoshove

Oh yeah…She is from Europe,Germany to be exact, and I Surf in Hawaii, Ride a Harley and Build my own guitars and play in a rock band.Guess I don’t fit the description Huh? Do all of yourselves a favor and get out of the country more often. It is very educational

  • pushtoshove

White people’s music huh? Tell that to Chuck Berry or Jimi Hendrix.Cross the racial divide people. It is outdated

  • Panama Red

Hey pushtoshove – “Blue-eyed murder in a size 5 dress”
By the way Black people started rock and roll. That’s what some people don’t know or forget about. Black bluesmen are the ones who picked up the guitar and started it all. Rock and Roll and lots of other music branched out from that. But those awesome ‘ol bluesmen started it. I love me some blues.

  • G-Dog

If there is any music era that should be defined as garbage it should be the rap/grunge/hip-hop/boy band 90′s. Cookie cutter crap. At least the bands that sucked in the 80′s wrote their own shit and if the songs sucked, they owned it! I’m at least seeing a few bands in the new millenium that have some hope. BTW… I agree with pushtoshove. Europe knows how to do it with the music and all that! This list is stupid.

  • Panama Red

I think it kinda sucks how so many American black people have gotten away from rock and roll and Blues. Because, that’s kind of like their roots in music. They were the originators.
It seems like most black dudes now are into rap and that’s about it. Maybe it’s because back in the 40′s and 50′s when record labels were being established, the amount of racism was suppressing the blacks to the point of rock and roll becoming “white people music”. You know ‘cause they were giving the contracts to white’s mostly. It’s a shame.
I don’t know, that’s just something I just now thought of, just a theory but it makes sense to me. Maybe that’s why a lot of black people got away from rock because they wanted to re-establish something that’s their own, away from “white people’s music”. It’s too bad.
At least there have been some rock and heavy metal bands with black dudes, like Sevendust. Sevendust kicks some serious ass!

  • Steve

Push Comes To Shove: Anyone can play mexican music and sing in spanish but it is still Mexican music. Anyone can play rock music and that is great. There is nothing wrong with that. But because Jimi Hendrix and Chuck Berry out of literally 1000′s of rock artists does not mean it is suddenly not mainly a caucasion based culture of music. I REALLy wish that more people of different cultures would get into rock music. That would be great! But it doesn’t make someone racist to state the obvious that was my point to you

  • VHIII_1998_

who is the idiot calling VH a hair band? blame hanoi rocks and a bunch of biter bands for that, if you are not aware, Van Halen is a rock band with unmatched guitar licks. “reminder” everyone was trying to match ED, even Tony Iommi was trying to copy Eddies whammy bar stuff, listen to Born again by Black Sabbath (1983) the album with Ian Gillen.

  • Steve

Canes_fan5150 says: Hi, Glad to hear that. It appears that Push Comes to Shove is the hateful one here. We all would agree that it would be awesome if all different cultures embraced rock music. But the obvious is the obvious. They don’t in general terms (always small exceptions..) Doesn’t make us a racist for stating the obvious

  • Kimberly

G-Dog– MUCH agreed. I can’t even handle some of the 90′s crap that “artists” came out with. And VH is NOT a hair band. I mean..go talk to Twisted Sister about what a hair band is haha

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

who gives a fuck what minorities listen to. they can listen to what they want, that is the whole point of america dumbass!
but if you miss out on van halen – you miss out on life!

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

jimi hendrix was black the last time i checked and slash is half black…

    do your homework!

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

anyone is free to rock hard!
too bad there are not more minorities in bands.

  • pushtoshove

Okay….Rock n Roll Forever….That’s My Standpoint…Steve no more debate…It Isn’t and never was Caucasian Music…It’s just like Rap Crap…Started by Black people and commercialized by White people.Black people were playing Rock music in the late forties and Now here we are and as usual someone ( you ) is claiming it for the white man….There is no spoon Steve.Give it a rest man.Rock n Roll IS NOT mainly Caucasian, white, cracker, honky, old Grey face, blue eyed devil OR Caucasian ( B T W- My birth certificate says ‘Caucasian’).People like you made Black people hate the very music THEY INVENTED.Stop being a tard’…You are painting yourself the color IGNORANT.

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

lets agree that most people black, white brown or yellow listen to shit these days.

we have van halen and all that is related. (CHICKENFOOT anyone!)
    yeah baby!

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

ha ha my fiance is asian and she likes to listen to van halen during the day if i have it on… (slower tracks of course)

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

i have get to make her a metal head. maybe some zeppelin or sabbath will do the trick

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!!

    what about sabbath?

    they invented heavy metal!!!!

  • freddiegirl

Pushcomestoshove, I think you’re being a bit sensetive. I’m half-South American, my mom is from Argentina and my father’s parents are from Rotterdam. I look all caucasion and got my nautral blonde hair from my naturally blonde father…and my boyfriend is half Asian just like the Van Halen brothers and like Alex, he looks mostly Asian. It’s better now but I too remember the nasty looks we’d get when we started dating seven years ago….from mostly white men and from asian women. Yes, asian women, one of which told him he was betraying his race for being with me and did it rather nastily. And yes, I agree that rock music originated from the blues which originated from Africa. I’ve always wondered why so many African Americans and Afro-Europeans didn’t stay with rock and thought it was a shame they didn’t; agree with Panama Red on that point. No one is saying that rock is just a white person’s music but let’s face it….in the US it was and still is a huge part of American culture; a culture that was at the time mostly Caucasion. It’s not a bad nor good thing, it’s just the way things were. That is changing now and yes, like Steve, I would love for more cultures to embrace rock as well; maybe we could finally move away from the stranglehold that American Idol and artists like Kanye West (no offense to anyone that likes him; I am not a fan) and pre-fabricated artists like Brittany Spears and that horrid Cyrus kid. I don’t think it’s racist at all to make such a statement that rock was a huge part of white American culture…it would be just the same as if someone had said that rap/hip-hop is mostly part of black/African-American culture…it is! That’s just a fact! But…with our world becoming more global and multi-cultural that too is also changing. Look around at schools and malls everywhere and all kinds of kids of all races and colors listen to rap and hip-hop. I think we’re all obvious fans of rock music here so let’s let it unite us all instead of seperating us into different groups. One of the cool things my bf said he loved about the Van Halen brothers was that no one ever focused on their being half Asian; everyone always focused on how wonderfully talented they were. They just ‘were’… :) We should all be judged like that…for our accomplishments and our gifts and who we are, not the color of our skins. Pushcomestoshove, Steve, Panama Red and all the others who contributed to this very interesting discussion; it’s all good…:D

  • freddiegirl

On another completely different note, it’s Eddie’s b-day tomorrow! I am going to celebrate it by going to the Guitar Center and trying out some new guitars!

Happy Birthday, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen! Thanks for all the wonderful music; hope there’s more to come!

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!

    Freddie girl nailed it.

  • Steve

PushComestoShove: I am sorry to notify you that you still don’t know what you are talking about. Please don’t stoop to insults when you no longer can debate the issue

On another more important note today: I hope that Van Halen is kicking ass on some new tune today in 5150. Man, that would be awesome

  • Steve

    FreddieGirl: Well said! Rock on

  • chris.omeara

My girlfriend of 3 years is full Asian, and while not a doormat is the least high maintenance woman I’ve ever been exposed to.

Nothing against American women- I can appreciate beauty from all continents (we ARE Van Halen fans after all), but peace of mind is always nice…

I always figured Jan Van Halen understood this.

But always remember- don’t mess with an angry Filipina…

  • http://none Dirty Duck

…you guys can discuss the race issues….I’m here to discuss rock and roll….

Hated rage against the machine…I know, hard to believe right? Never liked their sound and personally couldnt stand zakk. Nirvana? Please. Yeah….they sure did ruin music in my eyes. I thought (and still do) that kurt cobain was a little whiney wimp who couldnt handle fame….boo hoo. Like eddie said after his death: if you cant handle the fame make music for yourself in your room or garage. I know many here are thankful for that grunge bullshit but I’m not. Groups like pearl jam (ugh) and soundgarden wouldnt even admit that sabbath or kiss were an influence. The only good thing that came out of grunge was S.T.P….and even now that aint sayin’ much. Fuckin’ weiland. It’s funny…where are all these grunge groups now? Never hear shit about them. Sure pearl jam is still sellin but whoopee….nothing to write home about. Was hair metal becoming a problem? Sure…just check out “The decline of western civilization II”! I’m not blind to the direction it was going. BUT I do listen to certain (hair metal groups) and I dont give a fuck. I LOVE RATT! Yeah, you heard right! Stephen Pearcy rocks. Saw RATT twice and stephen solo….rocked out the whole night! Poison…cheesy? Sure! But they put on a great live show. Seen em about 10 summers in a row. Hey…you gotta take what you can get when it’s rock and roll! I’m not a “rattling trunk” type of guy if you know what I’m sayin! ;)
Beastie Boys used to be cool. Now…whatev. License to ill and pauls boutique are classics! I still play em’! LOVE Bob Marley! You always know when the warm weather is here…I always crank LEGEND! Cool stuff! Sex pistols? Punk rock truly only lasted for one year. Not a big punk guy but the sex pistols were cool. After awhile though punk did became annoying. Time has been kind to VH. It’s everlasting…it’s like breathing….it gets you thru the day and rocks you thru the night! Sorry about my rant here. Havent written in awhile. If anybody read all this then kudos! If you didnt…..I dont blame ya! LOL! It’s only from a ducks perspective.

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!

    asian girls are clearly better
    sorry!

  • SCAR

Why all this drama???? I could care less if you are Black, White, Asian or Purple!!! If you are a cool person that’s all that counts!! People stare at me with my long hair, long beard all the time and give me dirty looks – big deal!!! People judge me when I’m wearing my MC’s cut in public – who cares what people think!!! If you like who you are and you have good friends (friends that would take a bullet for you)that’s all that counts!!! Be yourself and be proud of who you are!!! If somebody doesn’t like you because of the way you look, then, that’s their pathetic problem!!!!! Rock on and be damn proud of who you are and what you stand for!!!!!!

  • Steve

Surf this:! Finding a select few exceptions to the rule does not change the generalization. You have completely missed the point of the message that it would be great if different cultures were more interested in Rock music and you have tried to turn it into the opposite. But that is okay. This is my final posting on this topic. You can have the last word.

  • freddiegirl

Hugs, Steve, Pushcomestoshove and all the other VH fans.. :)

chris.omeara…it’s funny our experiances..my half-asian bf always says he’s so happy that I’m not as high-maintenance as some of the asian gfs he’s had before me… :D I guess it’s all about your persepective.. ;)

  • john

Frampton wasn`t a hair band….Frampton is a real 70`s guitar hero…check him out on you tube…the dude can play, unlike most wannabes

  • john

freddiegirl, no one focused on the brothers being part asian, they focused on them being dutch…..and if you ain`t dutch, you ain`t much as the Van Halen clan would attest

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    john:

AGREED! LOVE frampton! And yes….the guy could play!
I have 3 of his albums in my collection including: Comes alive. Stellar stuff. “Something’s happening” is one of my personal faves!

Pete: thanks for gettin’ my back as always man! It’s nice to know that someone out there is on the same wave length! It’s hard finding people to connect with while silently walking down mean street…

  • Panama Red

Dirty Duck – I disagree with a lot about what you posted about those bands you talked about, but I’m going to paraphrase what you said at the end of your post right now. If anyone reads all this…cool, if not… that’s cool too.
We’re all Van Halen fans, that’s what matters here.
I’m about to indulge my ego and step on top of my soapbox for a few minutes.
All I know is that I love the Blues and I will always be extremely grateful and appreciative for what all of those old Bluesmen did. For all of their music and for their influence on the countless musicians around the world. Sometimes we get used to listening to bands whose albums and shows are a huge production. With all of the “magic” producers can do in studios these days. And all of the technical things/gadgets that can be utilized now in the making of a recording and during a live show. I wish more people would go back and listen to the roots of all of this music. Before the purity of it became clouded with all of the over dubbing and all of the guitarists who play for the sake of showing off their chops instead of playing with real feeling. Guys that don’t understand that playing faster doesn’t necessarily mean you’re playing better.(I’m not talking about guys like EVH or SRV who showed they had chops but whose soulfulness remained)

Don’t get me wrong, I love to experience complex bands like Tool and Pink Floyd (one of my all time favorite bands who by the way took their name from two Bluesmen Floyd Council and Pink Anderson).
But It’s a beautiful thing to pause and sit down to listen to a master bluesman and his guitar. To hear him pour his soul out onto those six strings, bending those notes almost making his guitar howl and cry. Sometimes with all of the hugely hyped and overdone production of all of these pop stars the T.V. and local radio is bombarded with, or the celebrities who have their go at it. (In the studio of course and most certainly without writing a single note or lyric) we forget what real music is. A lot of people in the general populace have gotten to the point where they celebrate the wrong things about music. It’s not about looking good and moving around the stage with the help from a choreographer to the point where you can’t even focus on singing so you have to lip-sync.
Real music is exposing your soul, being humble, vulnerable, and expressing your feelings of pain, love, sadness and joy through your chosen instruments in a way that flows from you at that split second in time when you are playing it. It’s not rehearsed over and over with vocal coaches and choreographers.

I will always be thankful for guys like Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and so on and so on. I could name at least 25 others who we all owe gratitude to.
Great Bluesmen paved the way for guys like Elvis Presely who influenced Buddy Holly who in turn helped create the Beatles. It keeps going and going.
Great Bluesmen guitarists like Freddie King inspired people like Eric Clapton to become great musicians who in turn inspired others like Eddie Van Halen to become who they are.
I’m stepping off of my soapbox now. Thanks to anyone who read this for indulging me and I apologize to anyone who I annoyed with this long, drawn out post.
Knibb High Football Rules! (“Billy Madison” Ref.)

    PS!

SCAR: for someone who sure rubbed me the wrong way in the beginning….you sure have become one of my favourite cats at this site! LOL…funny how things change. You truly are an american orginal! Never change (even though some around here might take that as a bad thing!)and like you said in your post above: Be yourself and fuck everyone else! :)

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!

you cant force people to listen to music.
anyway if you dont like living colour which kicks major ass (funky van halen0 then you miss out.

like it or not hard rock is larely a white cultural phenonenon and yes I think more diversty would be great but remember that styles that blend ususally dont work or most of time dont work and you end up with a bunch of posers…
i think that is the whole point of the article to bring us back to the beginning
beasties, cypress hill and RATM are respected bands because they really do play music or rap over music
    not like most hip hop
public enemy gets a free pass for just being so damn funky even with samples!!

  • http://vhnd.com surfthis!

i have to learn how to f’ing speeel.

  • Panama Red

Dirty Duck – To elaborate a little on me disagreeing with you about your post on Nirvana, Rage, Pearl Jam, and “Hair Metal” etc.
I understand where you’re coming from. Your take on it and everything, I just disagree that’s all.
We can all agree though on one thing. Van Halen 1 is timeless and Van Halen is a cut above the rest to say the least.
After all of the disagreements by everyone here, we ALL can Rock Out to one of the greatest rock bands that ever existed!

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    Panama Red:

What more can I say: YOU are a CLASS act my man!
I enjoy reading your posts and it’s cool to know that (besides me)your taste in music is universal!
Sure we’re not always gonna agree on everything but at least we can have a normal discussion about it like to civil rockers! No worries on not agreeing….it’s what makes us human! Stay cool and keep on rockin!

  • Steve

I hope VH is in the studio making a new song right this very moment.
