October 18th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
AAAhhhmmm, yeh so what??? They should have done “AFTERSHOCK”
and kick some serious Rock and Roll butt !!!!
October 18th, 2009 at 3:45 pm
That version kicks so much ass! I would love to hear a modern kick ass version of some classic VH songs by bands like….Nickelback, Seether, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, or even Puddle of Mudd! The classic riffs would sound amazing on modern hard rock guitar.

October 18th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
Solid.
October 18th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
that sucked dick
October 18th, 2009 at 6:28 pm
You will never see any band jamming on a van hagar tune.
October 18th, 2009 at 6:33 pm
Nice to see that the Van Halen the bands most like is the cVan Halen/Roth era, you know the REAL VAN HALEN!!!
October 18th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
LMAO @VAiN. True. So very true.
October 18th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
ahh yes “The Mighty Van Halen” prevails- you see Hammy fans, younger musicians DO get it!!
October 18th, 2009 at 8:13 pm
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
October 18th, 2009 at 8:26 pm
Decent.
October 18th, 2009 at 9:30 pm
theyd probably do really good at judgement day thatd be cool too
October 18th, 2009 at 11:23 pm
I’d love to see Ed jam with a band like this or at least lay down a lead track on some new-ish type metal…what would Lamb of God sound like with a EVH lead tucked in it…GO CELTICS!
October 19th, 2009 at 12:08 am
Jesus, even on a thread like this the Dave v Sam prats have to come out and show us how sad their lives are! Why don’t you guys go post over at ESPN if you have to turn everything into a competition to make up for the size of your dicks.
Of all the covers that pop up here in leu of news that’s one of the best so far.
October 19th, 2009 at 1:10 am
Why is this on the Van Halen Newsdesk? It’s not Van Halen. Pretty soon you’re going to have to change the name to the Van Halen/Chickenfoot/Sevendust Newsdesk.
(Just thought I’d add the usual complaint to the Sam vs Dave stuff that already found its way into this post)
October 19th, 2009 at 3:22 am
That was not Eddie’s solo.
October 19th, 2009 at 5:57 am
There’s fuck all going on with Van Halen right now. Plus it was just Dave’s birthday and this video keeps in with the good spirits of Classic Van Halen that’s plauging everyone’s minds!
Meh, I couldn’t care less if bands jam out to Hagar tunes or not. Thats what i’ve got the Hagar albums for.
October 19th, 2009 at 6:11 am
Funny that even almost 30 years later and the guy can’t even put a solo in there that is even close to the original. Like so many other guitarists, when they can jam the rythym part great and when it gets to the solo *CHOKE*. Just sayin’
October 19th, 2009 at 7:12 am
I agree on the sevendust thing being on the news desk. Let’s here something about Van Halen’s upcoming CD their supposed to be recording with Dave. I don’t mean that to sound negative. They said they were going to do one and I’ve heard a RUMOR that it might be titled ‘Encore’. I even heard in the same article that someone doing market research said the fans want Michael Anthony back in the band. Don’t think you need market research to know that. Honestly, I think Michael is having to much fun and success with Chicken Foot. It’d be cool to see the whole origanal line up of VH do a CD again though.
Just a great CD with Dave, Ed, Al, and Wolfie would be cool.

October 19th, 2009 at 7:31 am
I’d rather see Van Halen warming up to some Sevendust.
October 19th, 2009 at 8:00 am
outstanding musicianship, they take Mean Street to a whole new level. The solo reminded me of Satriani.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:47 am
Remember, kids, everytime a band warms up with a Dave-era VH song, your penis grows one inch! Wooo hoooo!
I like how any other time it’s, “Hey, this is a VAN HALEN news desk, why are we reading about some other band?!?” but when it’s chance to “prove” that Dave is better than Sammy, then it’s, “Aww, yeah! Take that Spammy fans! This is proof-positive that you suck! Oh snap!!1!!!”
Typical.
October 19th, 2009 at 9:49 am
What movie was that when they noted that anyone that was a fan of old VH with DLR was cool and anyone who was into Van Hagar must be a narc.
Billy Madison? That was some funny and true stuff!!! LOL
These guys have potential….
October 19th, 2009 at 9:52 am
You know what’s funny? Given the level of inactivity for Vh right now, normally this website would be dead.
But Chickenfoot keeps this site alive. So for all the Foot haters that bitch about vhnd reporting the bands news, guess what?
It’s cause maybe Chickenfoot are actually DOING something. Pass the memo on to Edward.
October 19th, 2009 at 10:10 am
Would someone please tell me WHY 7Dust has not recorded this as a tribute??? This is a great rendition boys and girls….
October 19th, 2009 at 11:17 am
That is HORRIBLE!!! Why is this even on??
October 19th, 2009 at 11:54 am
I hope Eddie will take something away from this new and improved version of Mean Street. Maybe he should take some cues from Kirk Hammet on how to really make that geetar sing!
October 19th, 2009 at 12:41 pm
Shut up ‘n play yer guitar. No one should EVER remake a VH tune. For fun is one thing…but to even mention anyone let alone that suck nickelpop/slack remake a Halen tune is pointless. No bozos!!

I think Kirk should take lessons from Eddie as to how to make that guitar sing - I like Kirk, but come on. Eddie is unique in his playing and songwriting and the new CF, some cover by these dudes, etc. can’t hold a candle to the man.
Just sayin’…
October 19th, 2009 at 1:44 pm
I agree! New and improved, Terje? Over what, the original? Are you kidding? They were just fuckin’ around in the studio, not even really trying to play it,..nothing wrong with that. But there is with your statement! It wasn’t even the real riff, close but not quite. C’mon now..
October 19th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
agreed with Karl, every thread turns into the dave vs. sammy crap.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Hot Rats took it one step further and made it the CF vs. “haters” thread as well
DOUBLE zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
October 19th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
Barffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffff
October 19th, 2009 at 4:26 pm
I think Sammy and his waboritas should countinue to cover Van hagar covers to keep that catalog alive. I also think it would be cool if Extreme cover atleast on song off of VH3 Then the VH legacy of all era’s would live on…. God Bless the mighty VAN HALEN !!!!!!!!!
October 19th, 2009 at 4:28 pm
Lance… That article sounds like an interesting read. Do you know where it’s from? I would hope that if VH - based on market research - approached Mikey and tried to get him back in the band. It would be hilarious to watch Mikey tell Ed he can shove it so far up his ass. Knowing Mikey though, he’d probably just say, “no thanks. I like playing new music.”
October 19th, 2009 at 4:42 pm
Well they have good taste in music. I’ve never heard of them but they should leave the playing to the pros.
October 19th, 2009 at 4:48 pm
Just Aweful Of Course - People That Have Connections Get The Glory Now Where It USED To Be Respectable Players Made It - Let This Terrible Band Show That Music Needs More Talented Players Than We’ve Heard Ever Since Nirvana Ruined The Music Industry - All Bands In The Last 15 Years Or So Sound The Same, They Can’t Play Their Instruments, They Scream Because They Can’t Sing Live The Solos Are One Note On One String And The Youth Doesn’t Know Any Better So They LOVE It - Eddie Van Halen Wrote His Stuff While Taking A Crap And When Other Bands Try To Play It , I’d Rather Hear Eddie Crap !!!!
October 19th, 2009 at 5:58 pm
Goodness that sucked ass! At least get a tone. Not even playing it correct!
October 19th, 2009 at 6:06 pm
This was news worthy?
October 19th, 2009 at 6:46 pm
it’s good to see younger bands showing appreciation to rock’s greatest band!
October 19th, 2009 at 8:22 pm
shayne, the movie was a porn featuring your mom! great flick!
October 19th, 2009 at 8:43 pm
i think people who still attack sam and ed for van hagar must be making up for being losers in high school, having a small unit or not getting any from the old lady or girlfriend.
To spend the time to constantly write shite about that eera of the band shows its a slow news day in these jokers lives.
If you don’t like van hagar then don’t listen to it!
I like both version of the band depending on what mood I’m in and both have their strong points.
that being said anybody would admitt or realize the classic line up is the best version of the band but van hagar is in the hall of fame for a reason you goofballs!
give it a break guys. Sammy is not even in the fricking band anymore. You have erratic Roth. I still like him however bones no chops and all.
now if van halen would actually do something instead pulling a black sabbath or RATM (cash grab) reunion
October 20th, 2009 at 1:18 am
Everyone should just chill. They’re just messing around in
the studio warming up. This wasn’t meant to be some big
tribute to VH.
Great drum sound though! Cheers!
October 20th, 2009 at 5:19 am
I like the more modern approach, Eddie should study more contemporary guitarplaying. There’s nothing wrong about broadening your horizon you know. Also, you can tell the guys in Sevendust have great harmonic knowledge. They use their musical powers to enhance Mean Street, bring it up to date.
October 20th, 2009 at 5:58 am
Who cares really. This doesnt show that they appreciate anything. They could have warmed up with a Poison song the day before or could have jammed Hannah Montana the next day. This is only there cause they dont want to get caught playing something else. I dont know why people are getting worked up over a class b- band jamming. All hale Van Halen cause someone played a little bit of a song. Van Halen played a who song. Does the Who news desk comment for days about how bad or good it was and who was singing. Its all music.
October 20th, 2009 at 6:15 am
Actually wasn’t horrible, but then I can’t remember a Sevendust song to save my life. I didn’t realize they still made music.
Asking Ed to play more “modern” is like asking Clapton or BB King to start tapping. What’s the point? Ed plays like Ed. If you want to hear “modern” guitar playing, (and by that do you mean the detuned grind crap cranked through the standard mesa or old 5150?), then there is plenty of that floating around already, but that’s just my opinion.
I’d rather stab myself in the eyes then hear VH covers by Nickelwack, Sevendust, or any of the “modern” metal/pop bands, but then since there is NO Van Halen news (but then I don’t think daily twitter updates of Ed or Dave taking a crap, or some other mundane stuff, is all that interesting either), then this is what you get.
October 20th, 2009 at 6:42 am
VAIN - true enough about a band not covering the Sammy era. Like Rolling Stone said about Gary Cherone trying to sing “Dreams”: “this is a song that all but a handful of vocalists should even consider attempting”.
Sammy’s register is simply beyond what most singers can muster. That doesn’t make him better or worse, so please kids…this isn’t some kind of Dave vs Sammy thing.
October 20th, 2009 at 6:47 am
Pete, sounds like you’re starting a Sammy vs. Gary thing. LOL.
October 20th, 2009 at 7:44 am
For everyone saying he butchered the solo, many artists when they do a cover change the guitar solo because it is a…wait for it…solo!
Ed drastically changed some of the cover songs he did, yet I don’t read anyone on here blitzing Ed because he didn’t play the solo in You Really Got Me note for note.
October 20th, 2009 at 7:54 am
blah blah blah.
October 20th, 2009 at 8:17 am
I actually prefer the solo Sevendust did. It has more panache than the original. Love those fluid lines. What scale is he using? Is it the pentagonic scale maybe?
October 20th, 2009 at 8:21 am
Mixture of A minor, A minor pentatonic, A dorian.
October 20th, 2009 at 8:27 am
But more panache? That was a goofing in the studio not even trying version. They are good musicians but…dude, c’mon! That’s too funny!! Go back and LEARN the original version. LMAO.
October 20th, 2009 at 9:53 am
I enjoyed listening to this, simply because I love hearing Van Halen music played live and seeing different people’s take on it.
But, Terje, come on. You’re calling this a more enhanced “Mean Street” and claiming the guitar solo has more panache than the original? Not a chance on either account.
October 20th, 2009 at 10:01 am
SKUTCH…maybe I am, maybe I am…
You are the man Skutch…here’s to ya!
October 20th, 2009 at 10:16 am
I really think Gary gave Sammy a good run for his money…only Gary looks cooler.
October 20th, 2009 at 11:47 am
The riff sounded OK but they PUNKED out during the solo just like a mediocre guitarist will tend to do.
October 20th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
since we are way off target….Thayer is a poser and Ace is the man.
Anamoly is a great album, atleast I like it!!!
October 20th, 2009 at 12:09 pm
…. Now I guess there will be a post from when the kids next door jam on VH here, or even worse- when someone scores high in Guitar Hero - Van Halen!!! Do we REALLY need to have this in here?
October 20th, 2009 at 12:14 pm
This website needs to stop posting this type of rubbish, this is not news at all.
October 20th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
I agree that most bands play Roth era because of the vocal range, but also, eddie expanded as a player in Hagar years. I know some of oyu play guitar. Try to play Summer nights, 5150 or Finish what ya started then try to play runnin with the devil, Panama and Aint talkin bout love. The roth stuff is way too much easier to play. Even songs which you would think are hard like hot for teacher are not hard. But then again, a lot of guitar players look at the roth era as their catalog for learning as it was more guitar driven. This is one other reason why they cover roth stuff.
And I agree with some of you on here. All you sammy haters why do you have to be like that. People who like sammy are not bashing roth. Sammy will always be the second singer. He was successful with VH. He was not roth. Get over it. All you sammy haters still bought the albums and went to the concerts i am sure. If hagar was i the band today you wouuld still suppport vh. Stop the hate. You dont need to listen to the hagar years anymore if you do not perfer them. Just dont listen to them. But as a Vh fan you should respect them!
October 20th, 2009 at 6:02 pm
way to say it RA 8 1 2!Roth did do the band better but why critisize sammy? He did great and sang really well
October 21st, 2009 at 4:11 am
I don’t understand why people bash the actual News Desk. They’re hitting you up with Van Halen related stuff. Go back into the archives and see what happened in, say 2003. Or 1999. Or some other year that literaly went month after month after month with nothing! Literally nothing! And then something would come up that was hardly newsworthy but it was actual news!
People bash and complain about this site but why do you still come here? This is a great site run by Van Halen fans FOR Van Halen fans. “This isn’t real news, blah blah” - right, so you’d prefer nothing? The last time there wasn’t an update for about 6 days the site went mental and delved into a monstrosity of arguments (mainly Ed bashers and Sam vs Dave bullshit). Just be thankful that the people on this site hit you up with free news that you probably won’t find anywhere else. Some of us like to hear stuff about all involved with Van Halen. Lets face it, theres not a lot going on with Ed now, at least nothing he wants us to hear about. So the people on this site innovate and get some stuff out to us. Whats wrong with that? Nothing.
October 21st, 2009 at 4:54 am
This is one of the dumbest stories I have ever seen on VHND.
October 21st, 2009 at 7:16 am
good warm up song
October 21st, 2009 at 7:19 am
Anomoly is a great album compared to the latest KISS effort….Thayer is just a poser….ACE is the man!
October 21st, 2009 at 10:01 am
Rich–good point. You’re dead-on. I agree 100%.
October 21st, 2009 at 11:07 am
Gotta give it to Rich here, he has a valid point.
But in the same breathe it is entertaining and allows us all to get our frustrations out even if some of us bash eachother and argue over our opinions… at the end of the day we are all here for a reason…we love VH no matter which flavour we prefer.
PS hey Sammyvanroth, good come back! I thought it funny!!
October 21st, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Where is Scar?! Nobody has been called a putz yet!!!
October 21st, 2009 at 1:32 pm
HAHAHAHAHA! Good 1 RA 8 12!!!
October 22nd, 2009 at 7:44 am
This time with a little more enthusiasm.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:27 pm
RA812
Nice points about some real difficult and cool Sammy era stuff. I agree those tunes are more difficult to play than the Roth era stuff you mentioned.
However, nothing in the Sammy catalog matches the technical merit of
- One foot out the door
- Spanish Fly
- Intro to Women in Love
- On Fire (solo)
- I’m the one
- Drop Dead Legs (solo)
- Top Jimmy
Don’t get me wrong - Ed rules with Hagar also. I just think Ed focused more on song writing with Sammy and more on playing with Roth.
October 23rd, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Can I get “you putz” anyone?
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Other than Summer Nights mainly due to the the trans trem making it so difficult (to me) as I have to have 2 guitars set up, Rickie is right.
Me wise magic also used the trans trem and I don’t even try that one.A Roth song written during the Sammy yrs I think?!
Some of his songs in his list have been tormenting me for yrs!!!(trying to play them) But then again I don’t have a fraction of Ed’s talent.
Would be interesting to see what the man himself says about degree’s of difficulty for him….
October 23rd, 2009 at 4:24 pm
Ooops sry Rickie but I can’t “putz”you!!!LOL
October 24th, 2009 at 7:41 am
I agree Shayne - I would love for Ed to comment on what he thinks is his most difficult stuff. I don’t think he ever has and that is because I have never interviewed him!
I would ask him “what was god saying to you when you were playing and recording fair warning”?
