Waiting for EVH and DLR to work their magic again!!!!
July 15th, 2009 at 8:55 am
Good mix.. I like it. Some good rarities in there. Always liked Big Fat Money, some great guitarwork on that song.
Respect the Wind was always very underrated in my book, even liked the movie too! Makes me wonder why Eddie never branched out and did some more solo stuff for movies soundtracks/scores between singers. Humans Being.. still one of my favorite riffs of all time. Even sprinkled in some VHIII with One I Want.. good tune.
Is that last little guitar part from Little Guitars? Sounds very “Won’t Get Fooled Again” influenced. Good stuff!!
July 15th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Excellent work … you can tell you really put some time into this.
July 15th, 2009 at 9:38 am
Fun:) I like it
July 15th, 2009 at 9:51 am
I like it. Thought the intro was great. However as much as i like big fat money too i felt it played a bit too long. The respect the ewind with drums was AWESOME! Whish it played longer. And the ending to me just cut off. didnt like it. Maybe something was wrong with my player.
July 15th, 2009 at 11:28 am
The mix should have started at the 3 minute mark. LOL I think these are really well done. These must take awhile to put together so smoothly.
As soon as I hear Sammy’s voice a little throw up makes it’s way back up to my mouth. Not trying to restart a huge debate, just saying those were the parts I have to FF through unfortunately. Sorry.
July 15th, 2009 at 12:00 pm
Very nice job. Clearly you know the extended VH catalog and where ‘n’ when to splice ‘n’ weave them together. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to #3.
July 15th, 2009 at 1:06 pm
There`s nuthin` funner than guessin`”what comes next?”
Great Job!-I`d like to hear the same approach with LED ZEP!!!
(I`ve tried myself, but it`s just too easy “gettin`lost in the material” so to speak.
July 15th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
Question:How do you disciplin yourself in the choices you make?-Does it rely solely on the beat/tempo,or is it based on
staying “in key” with the previous “Riff”,Or Both??
I`ve played many a “medly” for “encores” in my “band” daze,
(AC/DC,KISS,ZEP,=VH=Sabboth,Rush,etc.)So i totally identify with the concept.
can`t wait to hear the next mix;)
July 15th, 2009 at 3:57 pm
Roland-
What application do you use to mix thes fantabulous rock tunes?
As much as I like the mixes…it would be nice to see Ed Al Wolf and Dave (uggh) add to the mix 3…
Thanxs for sharing.
July 15th, 2009 at 5:00 pm
Better than the first one.
July 15th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
I like it! But is it just me? When you mix Sammy’s vocals with classic VH/Roth music it just doesn’t do it for me!!! I agree with other’s here that Big Fat Money and some other songs went for far too long. Damn I feel like doing one myself, you’ve got me all jazzed up!!
July 15th, 2009 at 10:39 pm
You nailed it on the respect the wind intro, it fits and ya can tap along, keep it up, no one else is doin this, wish it was on cd !!! Again great work!!!!
July 16th, 2009 at 8:24 am
Nice job. And I’ve got no problem including Sammy. Roth is the ultimate showman/frontman, no question about that. But when he was gone, Sammy helped to keep it going and got the job done. He’s got the pipes and the vocal range that Dave lacks (with some exceptions like “Little Dreamer” where he totally nails it), and Sammy will always be part of the VH history. And, to all the Roth purists who object, Sammy’s contribution helped to ensure that Dave actually had a band to come back to. But it’s all good. Chickenfoot is great, and here’s to hoping for some great new material from VH. C’mon guys …
July 16th, 2009 at 8:59 am
Dooley– So right..I am a Roth fan, but Sammy carried on the VH legacy. Sooo..though I am not the biggest fan he is in fact apart of VH history. Lovin’ the mix! <3
July 16th, 2009 at 9:43 am
These kick ass! How do I get them on my ipod?
July 16th, 2009 at 9:48 am
rock on Kimberly… <3u2
July 16th, 2009 at 10:03 am
I guess it’s cool. Not sure what the purpose of it is.
The songs by themself sound better.
It would be cool to somehow mix a bunch of the eddie and alex middle of the song solo jams together.
July 16th, 2009 at 11:25 am
Dooley– Lovin’ the positive energy
July 16th, 2009 at 12:16 pm
Guys I’d also add that the Hagar stuff (and even the Cherone to an extent) belongs in these mixes simply because it’s some of Eddie’s best guitar work. Love or hate Hagar I don’t think any of us can argue that Eddie was on top of his game 91-96, both in terms of playing and tone. Listen to the overlaying solos at the end of Human’s Being and Me Wise Magic.. just brilliant.
As for Favorite songs.. man where do you start?? Probably have to pick a sleeper in Dream Is Over.. killer riff and the backing vocals are epic. My 2 cents anyway.
July 16th, 2009 at 2:18 pm
Too many tunes to choose from:
I say we up the anti here today at the Van Halen Cantina..howa bout each era:
Dave: In A Simple Rhyme-opitomy of raw angst-well balanced and Dave’s youthful exuberance is stellar- “you’re gonna hear an angel singin’”
Sam: In N Out- yah that’s right I said it…same amount.
Gary: One I want- the album was produced by Post and he can’t take all the blame for not making the cake right. Ed was as messed up as ever and Gary could do no right, even if he was Robert Plant. The darkest time in Ed and Al’s VH years. Unfortunately, Ed’s playing on the album was wasted, due to all the other things inundating the band at the time.
Dave 2.5: We Shall See
July 16th, 2009 at 2:49 pm
Dave Era: Romeo Delight
Sammy: Summer Nights
Gary: One I want
I like off beat tracks! Always have.
July 16th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Not an easy task but I’d say…
Dave: Little Dreamer, Me Wise Magic, Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love
Sam: Humans Being, Summer Nights, Right Now
Gary: No selections. Nice enough guy, but none of it worked. He’s better off having re-united with Extreme.
keepin it “pos”, K
July 16th, 2009 at 4:35 pm
RA– Romeo Delight is such a kick ass song!! I love Sinner’s Swing off Fair warning too…And You’re No Good off VH 2. Soo many haha.
I also like Can’t Stop Loving You w/ Sammy…that is the best driving song haha.
Dooley– Little Dreamer’s chorus is so haunting, I love it. And Ain’t Talkin’ Bout Love is CLASSIC. Good choices!
July 16th, 2009 at 4:57 pm
great job roland.I hope someday the unreleased “crossing over” could come out here in the states in some sort of package.Once again, fantastic mix!
July 16th, 2009 at 5:38 pm
Obviously a little (dreamer) biased here..
But Halen fans are passionate and as Mikey would say..
“The best fans in the World”
Nice work.
July 16th, 2009 at 5:51 pm
Good question kimberly. A TRUE VH fan should be able to pick a favorite from all eras.
Mine.
Dave- “Little Guitars” and “Mean Street”
Sammy- “Dreams” and “Humans Being”
Gary- “Without You” and “Dirty Water Dog”
July 16th, 2009 at 6:42 pm
Now this is the stuff we should be talking about!!
Dave Era: So This Is Love, Mean Street
Sammy Era: Get Up, Feeling
Gary Era: Year To The Day, Fire In The Hole
July 16th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
With DLR - Hear About it Later
With Sam - Spanked
With Gary - Dirty Water Dog
July 16th, 2009 at 8:57 pm
Great mix again!
I wonder if Van Halen / Warner Bros. lawyers have sent a Cease and Desist letter to Roland yet?
July 16th, 2009 at 9:20 pm
ACE, where does it say a “true VH fan” have to like all eras? Explain to me how that works? I know you and I don’t always see eye to eye, but am I not allowed to like what I like without the approval of the VH3 fans? I’ve bought several of the Ernie Ball EVH guitars, I’ve tracked down shirts in my size from the 1st 6 tours (which took years), bought the phase 90, used the Hammer Guy on my business card for years, and bought stage used picks off ebay. I even got Ed’s setlist from the 1st MSG show of the last tour (which I went to 4 times). The list could go on. I think I’m a TRUE fan. If I don’t like Dirty Water Dog or Right Now, that doesn’t mean I’m not a True fan. It just means I have good taste. Come on Ace, gimme a break. Try for one day not to be so condescending to people who think differently than you.
Anyway, to answer Kimberly’s question and lighten the mood, Hear About It Later is probably my favorite Dave era tune. I only like 3 Sammy songs and my favorite of those is 5150.
July 16th, 2009 at 10:09 pm
Thanks to all…, you can download de Free MP3s on many sites…, including mine…

Another good mix. Please i need a copy of these great 2 mixes. They are so cool.Good job Dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 17th, 2009 at 12:42 am
Little guitars… at the end, yeah baby, it stops just like ed did live…, know Van Halen !!!!
July 17th, 2009 at 4:24 am
Hear About It Later is great too…really I am just in love with Fair Warning. They are all great obviously(haha), but I think FW is my favorite.
July 17th, 2009 at 6:56 am
Dirty Ducks favourite DAVE ERA songs:
I’m the one
Outta Love Again
Unchained
Girl Gone Bad
Secrets
Atomic Punk
Hot for Teacher
Little Dreamer
D.O.A
July 17th, 2009 at 7:02 am
Kimberly:
Fair Warning is what i call the “cult classic” of the 6 with Dave. Supposidly a reporter from rollingstone destroyed the record after hearing it when it was first released. *(not that it matters cause rollingstone mag sucks)I think it’s their “darkest” album. As dave once said: “Mean Streets and “Push comes to shove” were NOT celebration songs. Eddie wanted to quit the band but alex told him to stick thru it.
I think that its classic. It has a completely different sound than ANY of the other albums they ever made. “Hear about it later, One foot out the door, Unchained, Sinners Swing, etc are just some of the songs that stick out. Man…the opening riff on “mean street” STILL gives me goosebumps!
July 17th, 2009 at 7:06 am
GREAT JOB - I WISH I COULD BY THEM ON iTUNES…but I guess with copyrights and contracts that’s not going to happen.
For someone who liked all eras of VH these mixes are EXTREMELY cool! (I can tolerate the MUSIC of III, but it’s a shame how they tried to make him sound like Sammy. He has a great “Freddie Mercury” tone to his voice, but there’s only one Sammy.)
It’s nice to be reminded that VH used to be. I’ve never heard anything finer. Thank god we now have Chickenfoot so that there’s actually something NEW to add to all this cool CLASSIC music.
July 17th, 2009 at 7:08 am
Did anyone ever hear the DANCE version of “FINISH WHAT YA STARTED” that WB leaked to the dance clubs? It was part sacriligious/part cool vibe.
If anyone knows the story behind that I’d really appreciate knowing more about it. I have it on my “VH - UNRELEASED” bootleg.
Peace everyone…
July 17th, 2009 at 7:53 am
I really loved the whole thing! Roland, Thank You so much for working on this and sharing it with all of us!
July 17th, 2009 at 8:26 am
This is awesome. It took a lot of work and I enjoyed the heck out of it. Great job Roland.
July 17th, 2009 at 9:08 am
For the DLR and Sammy Era I just can’t pick a favorite, I truly enjoy every song they have done!!!!
Gary: Without you!!!!
July 17th, 2009 at 9:37 am
First off I would like to say it’s better than the first mix,an A- compared to the C.I have followed this band scince I’m 9yrs old in”78″ and I feel I can critique this as most of you have. So here we go- More Dave, less Sam,”Big fat money” went on way too long, I realy enjoyed “Respect the wind”(a song not heard offten enough). The guitar mixes are great, needs more Alex and Mike(don’t leave out essential members,Gary not with standing). Again I will say this- If you get approval from the Halen camp and/or Warner distibution I will gladly pay for it in long formate(ie-full album length). Thanks for reading…TGIF everybody it’s magarita time.
July 17th, 2009 at 10:15 am
Ducky– YES! It is so different from their other works and whenever I hear the opening to Mean Street I can’t help, but get amped cause I know what’s comin’ haha. The darkness of it is so apparent and yet it still sounds like classic VH..I love it!! All their albums have a touch of something different from any of the others and I love that about them. Originality is soo great:) Also, Unchained is one of my favorites to hear live..so loud and just balls to the wall rock, it is fantastic.
July 17th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Dave- Panama, Drop Dead Legs, Unchained
Sammy- Humans Being, Summer Nights, 5150, Cabo Wabo
Gary- Without You, and I really liked Josephina
July 17th, 2009 at 2:04 pm
dave era: meanstreet - little guitars
sammy era: 5150 - black and blue
but in the end, i love them all!
July 17th, 2009 at 3:29 pm
Skutch
I too own some precious EVH instruments! I also like Dirty Water Dog and still think you have good taste bro!
Hear About it Later is IMO the best VH tune ever. It was written on piano (so was unchained)! It blows me away. Especially from the solo to the end.
July 17th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
Kim
I like dirty movies. Do you?
July 17th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Switching gears……
ED needs a big time producer for the new album…
If HE does it…
It will be another VH3…
forget, dogs barking, quarters spinning and broomsticks…
and once again…thank goodness for the engineer with dave’s voice..
July 17th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Skutch I wasn’t trying to be condescending. I thought kimberly’s question gave us all a chance to give an opinion without making this another Sammy vs. Dave thread.
The first time I heard the VH III album I wanted to pull it out of the cd player and snap it in half. But after years of listening to it sporadically I learned to at least like parts of it.
The whole VH III thing was just too drastic a change in musical style for us to accept it at the time.
It’s called having an open mind and just enjoying the greatest band in the world regardless of who is singing.
July 17th, 2009 at 8:04 pm
Alright bro. I’m sorry if I got too worked up. totally my bad if I took it the wrong way. So now I’m close minded? LOL
July 18th, 2009 at 4:36 am
Is it just me or has DLR been way under the radar ever since the tour was over? you would think that if this incarnation of VH was the next thing as he said three thirds original one fourth inevitible, why is he holding back? I would love to hear what dave has to say, I have been reading this site for a while and refused to post a comment because its always the same sam vs dave; we need music; eddie owes us; we fans pay his bills! If Dave is the frontman why no word? Is Eddie really the head of the household? if so its not really a band, its eddie and family(with his new brother as he has said with every singer since Dave)
July 18th, 2009 at 8:49 am
Yes, I LOVE Dirty Movies<3 Can’t live without it. LOL
July 18th, 2009 at 2:12 pm
Hey swingin`sinner-I feel your pain bro. After reading”CRAZYFROMTHEHEAT”1/2 a dozen times,i`ve realized that this is Roth`s standard “M.O.”-After touring He goes “incommunicato”having adventures
we can only dream of(rockclimbing, living in/exploring the nearest”Jungle”,Saving lives[EMT]etc.)The last cool thing for us fans was a GReat photo”album” of the last tour(on DLR`s website).
A monthly diary of what the”DIAMOND”1`s been up to would be WAY more entertaining to read about than the latest biZZnes adventure
of FORMER members.
July 18th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
(Our) Dear Sweet Kimberely:)-
“light up the sky”
“women in love”
“simple ryhme”
“secrets”
“little guitars”
“the FULL bug”
“girl gone bad”
“me wise magic”
AWE HELL,All Roth=VH= for that matter;)
VHgar:
5150
0U812
F.U.C.K.
I personally/honestly started to miss DLR`s voice&input at that point,(that`s when Sam was out&Dave`s back in,no,no, wait he`s out again,Here`s Gary-perfect-No,wait not him,Dave,NO Sam,NO wait…
(Ah, fuggetaboutit).I promise you KIM,when the next=VH= album(with ROTH)cums out,I`ll update my list!!<3
July 18th, 2009 at 6:04 pm
I`ve just heard this mix for the666`th time and finally realized that as GREAT as the 1st 3 “VHGAR” albums are,Sam`s approach eventualy wasn`t enough to KEEP UP with the musical groundbreaking level ED&AL were making.&(personally) to hear those riff`s without vocals(sam&gary era),You can “almost hear” how cool it “would`ve” sounded with DAVE`S Delivery.
THANX ROLAND,for a-HOLE new perspective!lol:)
July 19th, 2009 at 9:06 am
Thanks to all.
It’s cool to see VH fans talking ‘random” Van Halen over my mixes… Talking about Van Halen is what I did all my life.
More Van Halen goodies coming in “Van Halen Mix 03″ and in ALL of my Classic Rock mixes.
July 19th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
Interesting choices in this mix. These guys sure give you a lot of great stuff to work with. Very interested to hear what kind of stuff VH IV will come up with. I guess they should be getting back to work on a new album soon now that Wolf has graduated and Ed should be back from his honeymoon?
July 20th, 2009 at 6:25 am
PHILLISTER…I’ll have some of whatever you’re having, because it must be incredible baby!
I have to comment on your following quote: “Sam`s approach eventualy wasn`t enough to KEEP UP with the musical groundbreaking level ED&AL were making.”
Let’s see…every album with Sammy was AWESOME and went to NUMBER 1. With III Ed and Al sailed the good ship VH to the bottom. (Marching to Mars outsold VHIII, even with Warners shipping a tonne to try to give it a boost.)
Since Sammy left, Ed and Al have produced one album (VH III) plus 3 new songs (with Sammy). Sammy said those 3 songs took as long as a new album should have taken.
In the same time period Sammy has toured frequently and to great reviews and ticket sales, for those that are interested in ticket sales as a measure. He’s also release a handful of DVDs, a bunch of great CDs, and has continued to stay relevant and in the news for his various musical exploits.
We all have our “favorites”, but for all these reasons, I think it is 100% inaccurate to suggest SAMMY couldn’t “keep up” with Ed and Al. Ed and Al are certainly never going to be the poster boys for rock and roll productivity based on their last 10 years!
Peace brother!
July 23rd, 2009 at 12:14 am
First one was the best.
Bought back some old memories this remix did.
Hope all is well within Vankaren land.
