12 Days of the Foot – Day 1 (Avenida Revolution)

  • phil

very cool i’m excited….in honor of our veterans how about no negative comments or drama for just one day? but everyone can go back to talking sh#! tomorrow!

  • McD’s

It’s a great mechanism. You usually don’t get the insight to an album like this…may the occasional story in a magazine/radio/tv interview.
    I like what I’ve seen/heard so far.

  • Karl

I think we’re getting a bit too much Foot now. They’re killing all the tension – I feel like I’ve heard the album already.

  • Dick Bacon

i think this is a good thing. by getting their new music out there and letting it be heard, people won’t buy it and be disappointed.

  • Karl

Or maybe they’ll spend so much time telling us how great it is that it can’t be anything other than a little disappointing once it finally gets here.

  • http://myspace.com/timkarplus t1m

I like Joe’s riffs on this song. I’m excited to hear what the non-single type album tracks turn out like.

  • Erick

I won’t be as great as the six mighty masterpieces.

  • SCAR

Phil I’m down with that brother!!!!

  • JCN

sounds cool. Good to hear the Anthony harmonies all over this tune!

  • Fanboy

They took intro from “Everybody Wants Some!!” and turned it into their best track. Simple!

  • SirFrankenberry

Was that Randy “Macho Man” Savage on the right in this video?
    “Snap into a Slim Jim!!!”

  • http://deleted Aftershock

Karl, I agree with your two posts above. That is my only real criticism of Chickenfoot — too much pre-publicity. Stoke the fire, but don’t burn all anticipation to the ground.

  • pete

Erick,i dont understand people like you who constantly have to tell us it wont be as good as van halen first 6 albums.we all know this and if ya dont like it then dont buy it but i can enjoy van halen and chickenfoot.

  • HotRats

“They took intro from “Everybody Wants Some!!” and turned it into their best track. Simple!”

Let’s be fair here. The opening lick of “Everybody Wants Some!” is copped from “Bad Motor Scooter” by Sammy’s band Montrose.

And that came out in 73 way before VH’s debut album Plus, Ted Templeman produced Montrose’s debut album.

And EVH even admitted regardless of current feelings for Sammy that Ted Templeman was hired due to that Montrose record. Which was a huge influence on the band. The point is all musicians borrow from each other.

If you havent heard it check out Montrose. It turned me from a non Sammy fan to one. Too bad Sammy couldnt have kept the creative momentum from Montrose into his solo career.

His solo career with the exception of Marching to Mars feel free to diss as I cant blame you. At least he got good again on the last two albums he did with Van Halen before the split.

And now the cool music with Chickenfoot. Sammy definately needs to be in a group and not solo. He seems to put out better music that way.

  • http://tobigal scott

first of all it sounds nothing like everybody wants some its just a great tune and so is the rest of the cd long live the foot!

  • Brad

    This sucks.
I would not listen with a lamb
I would not listen and eat spam
your prime is already reached…sam I am.

  • Deja Vu

Pumped for tommorow nights show in Mass. From the interview you can tell the boys are enjoyin the ride. Nice to see Smoke givin Sammy his props when it comes to songwriting. We all know Sammys been doing it right since the Montrose Days, Rock Candy, Bad Motor Scooter, Make it last, etc… but still nice to hear from an accomplished musican like Satch. Great tune, and like always, Sammy puts his heart into the lyrics and the music. Cant wait to hear the full versions of all the tracks on June 5th when the CD drops. Seems to me Chickenfoot is gonna be around for a while. YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!

  • http://vhnd surfsno

montrose was the peak of sam
    then van hagar
    and now chickenfoot

solo work is okay but nothing special.

sam in a band is much better.

did someone say the last 2 van hagar albums were good?
    i think 5150 is a masterpiece.

  • http://www.501st.com Skutch

    LOL

  • MA=VH

I don’t give a shit what you naysayers put out. I witnessed the Foot come down hard, real hard, last night at a small club show in Toronto last night. Jesus Christ my ears are still ringing and I’m still grinning.
You Ericks and Brads of the world don’t need to worry about Sam trying to recreate any of the “six masterpieces” (which, by the way, I agree they are); Chickenfoot is something completely different than anything else. The songs played live are so much different (and better) than their recorded version.

It’s full out, full on, in your face hard rock. This ain’t Sam’s beach party, there’s no VH material anywhere and definately no f&^%$ing around – it’s all business music-wise and complete insanity interaction-wise between songs. Joe is a bit mechanical but still completely awesome (I still haven’t figured out how to compare him and Eddie), Mike and Chad lay down some of the hardest rhythms I’ve heard in a long time and Sam’s voice was top notch. Anthony, John and Flea from the Peppers have been holding Chad back – this mother absolutely pounds it out. He’s likely the most underrated drummer out there (until now). I’ve never heard such a monstrous sound come from just 4 drums and 4 cymbals.

I would challenge the naysayers to donate just 90 minutes of their life to seeing the Foot live. If you still can’t like them or their music, then move along and live your life as you need to. I’d bet you’d walk out with a different opinion (even if you wouldn’t admit it).

This doesn’t need to be a competition between singers/guitarists/bands/eras etc..; there is no competition. Nobody is trying to be or sound like anyone else. It’s just solid, old school rock and roll.

    MA=VH

  • Vanicianado

I agree wit’cha surfsno. Wasn’t till Sammy joined VH that I went back and listened to the Montrose stuff. It’s very solid stuff.
And 5150 IS a kick ass record. Contains one of my top five favorite Van Halen songs (“5150″).
Sam in a band IS better.
Dave in a band IS also better too!
I’m excited for the Chickenfoot album… but if we get a VH album this year too… ding ding!!

  • Matt from Australia

    Over-performed publicity = under-performed album

  • Brad

    MA=VH

I would challenge you to see this CD go gold. If the “Live” is so much better than the recorded, and the recorded is what causes people see it live, this will be a struggle.

The next few weeks will tell…I would love to eat crow on this, but I probably won’t.

  • HotRats

Let me share a little story. Sometimes I do dj gigs every once in a while and also throw parties.

In either situation when I put on that Montrose record it never fails to get the crowd going. My friends will say “Man this kicks ass! who is this?”

Let me preface by saying these are hard core Team Roth guys like Erick. I’ll tell them the band. Then mention Hagar being in it.

I’ve never seen guys shut down that quick being at a loss for words. Cause no matter what you feel about Sammy, you cant deny Montrose.

That Montrose record is one of the best rock albums of the 70′s.

I used to be a hardcore Roth head too. But then one day my cousin who I was staying with at the time brought home For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge.

He cranked it up in his car while driving. The first song I heard was Judgement Day. The song kicked major ass and I was definately surprised. Having never really heard the previous 2 records and just the singles.

I expected it was going to be rewrites of “Love Walks In” and that type of stuff. I heard the whole album and man I never ate so much dirt in my life. With “Spanked” and “Right Now” being the exceptions F.U.C.K is a record you can put up there with the best of the Roth years.

What’s funny is alot of the haters of the sammy era have only heard the singles and not the albums. Being guilty of that myself I dug deeper into the first two Sammy albums.

When I heard “Good Enough” for the first time that was a pleasant surprise. Then I listened to “Source of Infection” and “A.F.U. (Naturally Wired)

Those songs rocked again as much as the Roth era. I started getting angry thinking “Why in the hell didnt they release these songs as singles?!” I think if they had, the Roth fans would have been more open to Sammy.

But then again most bands I love like REM put out the absolute worst singles. You have to listen to the album to really appreciate them

And Balance is a kickass record. I really feel the band with sammy was only starting to scratch the surface of what they could do with him before the split.

BTW to Surfsno I like 5150 but it sounds really dated today. I figured using F.U.C.K. and Balance as examples would give my arguments to the Sammy haters more validity.

Keep one thing in mind Sammy haters. Your pal Eddie was the instigator of the ballads. Which is one of the reasons Roth quit.

I kind of believe Sammy did the best with what music was given to him By Eddie. Which is why a lot of the early van hagar singles is soft rockish.

With the exception of “Oh Yeah” everything I’ve heard off the Chickenfoot records sounds awesome. Hope they play Austin soon. I will definately be there when they do.

  • Kayser Sozay

Chickenfoot only seems overhyped to the people who visit this site because they (VHND) comb the world and post everything that’s out there in one place. Other than hearing their new single on the radio from time to time and reading stories about them here and at Blabbermouth, I haven’t seen/heard much about them in the mainstream media. I doubt the majority of people out there have even heard of Chickenfoot so I can’t blame the fellas for putting the word out. Besides, I don’t know if they can overhype this record. I saw them live in Seattle over a week ago and the hair on my ass is STILL standing on end.

  • shawn

It is awesome that they share the vision with the fans. If you hate Sam and aren’t a fan keep it to yourself. I for one am glad to hear their excitement and the vision. It is all good!!

  • Fanboy

“If you havent heard it check out Montrose.”
No, thank you. I’ve just listened to “Bad Motor Scooter” and nothing can force me to listen to it again. Not even close to “Everybody Wants Some!”. Where’s that “copied lick”, HotRats??? Are you deaf or something?

  • Jeremy

Once again we have Erick on a Chickenfoot article!

Good to see you back buddy! We missed you and your sarcastic attempt at humor on here.(even though we know your a big fan)

So those 6 masterpieces were made when again? Come on here and make a relevant point that is meaningful please. This has nothing to do with Van Halen and thank god because in order to compare it, Van Halen ACTUALLY has to make music to compare it to and it’s not happening.

I’ve challenged you before Erick as to if you listened to Van Halen when they had Sammy and got no reponse? Must be an Eddie thing huh where you don’t have talk huh? But we all know you did and your a bandwagoner who jumps ship all the time.

About to much publicity here? All publicity is good no matter what. The more the merrier!

This is how bands should be and that’s give us the insight of what they are doing and how it came about. 11 more days of this I can’t wait.

Hotrats said it best and I’ve been saying the same thing. Without Montrose, there would be no Van Halen. Ted Templeman wanted Sammy to sing in Van Halen in 1978 and so did Warner Brothers. How would all of you feel then huh to take liberties and bash Sammy?

So Chickenfoot, keep showing us what you have and I’ll be on here checking it out. True musicians showing us real good music.

    LONG LIVE THE FOOT!

  • pushtoshove

The chevy camaro era 1967 was a great car – should it be the standard that all new cars are made to? Yeah if you want to break down and waste gas all the time. Van Halen wrote six classic albums 25 years ago but they are not current anymore. Period . Time to move into the future not the pasture , right? Chickenfoot is new and current whether you like them or not and van halen is currently living in the backseat of a broken down gas guzzler ( sorry Eddie-didn’t mean to call you a gas guzzler ).C-Ya!!

  • Erick

    To Jeremy and some others:

If some of you guys can put down EVH on the VHND, then I’m entitled to my opinion too:

    1.
It’s the VAN HALEN NEWS DESK.

    2.
You guys are really craving ‘new music’, if you get all excited when you hear ‘oh yeah’. It’s on the radio every now and then and I just don’t like it. It doesn’t come close to classic VH or other good music.

    3.
Chickenfoot will be all over in 1 or 2 years or so.

Now I’m going to my basement, plug in my bumblebee and jam along with Fair Warning.

    Have a nice day!

  • HotRats

    First off, Fan boy –

“No, thank you. I’ve just listened to “Bad Motor Scooter” and nothing can force me to listen to it again. Not even close to “Everybody Wants Some!”. Where’s that “copied lick”, HotRats??? Are you deaf or something?”

You know Fanboy I never once dissed you in my response. I was pointing out a hole in your argument in a very civil way.

I should have known better. Reasoning with a Roth head is like arguing with a mollusk – there’s no point. But I will do so anyway cause I’m a foolish optimist.

Ok listen to Everybody Wants Some and wait till it hits the 43 – 47 second mark for the chord sequence. Then listen to the beginning of Bad Motor Scooter when it hits the 13-15 second mark.

Then you notice they share the same sequence. And the thing you’re missing out on is Im not dissing Everybody Wants Some. I love that song as much as you do. But everybody borrows something.

It is fine you dont like Bad Motor Fanboy. But something tells me you already made your mind up to hate it before even listening to it. BTW for the rest of the posters curious about Montrose here is a couple of other songs -

    Rock The Nation – http://www.imeem.com/jukeboxmusic78/music/0c1U_DBs/montrose-rock-the-nation-remastered-lp-version/

Space Station No 5 – There is a sci-fi intro but it only lasts 40 seconds then goes into the song.

    http://www.imeem.com/popmusic2/music/-fMbK6xZ/montrose-space-station-5-remastered-lp-version/

Ronnie Montrose is a criminally underrated guitarist BTW

What is it with you Roth heads? I mean why come on the Chickenfoot posts and spill hate? Sammy is not even in Van Halen anymore so stop your whining.

I mean why does it have to be Roth or nothing? Why cant someone like both the Roth and Hagar eras?

BTW R Jeremy and Push To Shove you guys rock Everything you said is right on the money.

I love old records as much as the next person. But I also like new music as well. So all you Rothheads go and watch old Diamond Dave try to hang on to his toupee while singing Jump for the millionith time.

I’m going to see a band where their singer and guitarist arent coasting on past glories. And actually play NEW music for the majority of their show.

  • Rick

“Without Montrose, there would be no Van Halen.” That’s probaly the most stupid statement I have read in a CF thread to date. Seriously, I’m happy for you you are excited and all, but I think you lost some touch with reality here. I guess they would have become famous with Sam from the start(god forbid that to have happened, what a desaster that would have been), too, simply because of Eddies ground breaking guitar work, but never reached that classic status, because the songs would have sounded differently and Dave’s persona was a part of the success equation back then, too. Pushtoshove, I think you also have to admit the six classic albums still hold their ground today, despite being 25 years old, I dare to doubt that will be the same for any of CF’s efforts.

  • Chris B.

6 Masterpieces? Come on, Diver Down was half crap. You actually prefer “Dancin’ in the Streets” and “Happy Trails” to “Poundcake” and “In N Out”? Stop letting nostalgia get in the way of enjoying some great music.

I’m really enjoying these “behind the scenes” interviews. It’s like getting the Special Edition CD for no extra charge!

Anybody have any idea if “Bitten By the Wolf” will be on the digital copy you get when you buy the vinyl at Best Buy?

  • pushtoshove

Hey Rick..hope you rocked the memorial day weekend.I would agree that those 6 albums more than hold their own especially by today’s or any time’s standards. I was just pointing out that to continue VH will have to release ( key word here is release-writing is fine too but we need to buy it ) new music. Unless , by some miracle ( Ed the savior ) gets mikey back in the band and they tour again playing the classics. That would be top notch and worth every penny.I personally haven’t been struck by Chickenfoot in particular ( like the way i was the first time I heard unchained in 81′-what a fucking revelation that was!!!) But i appreciate them writing And releasing new music.I don’t think they are bad either although not much Ive heard compares with VH 1 – 6 and VHagar .Different trees in a different forest.

  • Vanicionado

“Why do I always come here?
    I guess I’ll never know…
It’s kind of like a torture, to have to watch the show.”

    Nit-pick this…

    Nit-pick that…

Should be a whole shipment of diapers coming for a lot of the whiners here.

    Sheesh.

  • kerndawg

I say you guys need to start pushing rock n roll b/c if you dont, pretty soon it will be nothing but hip hop and rap.

  • Rick

Contrary to public opinion, I have nothing personally against Hagar or CF and people who enjoy their music. If they enjoy themselves and their music, more power to them. I am ready to out myself that I really enjoyed and listened repeatedly to Hagar’s recently released “Loud” track (that’s the only instance so far, though, the odd one out or exception to the rule…). I dont find CF efforts compelling at all, but then again, it’s a matter of taste. I just think that there is really no ground for even comparing CF or even Van Hagger with Van Halen. The attempt is already an insult, but then again, my taste. What really gets me though is this pretext created here in all these CF threads by all the Hagar fans. All this, “so much fun”, “new music”, “Joes great – Eddie’s washed up”, “Eddie’s a shitty human being because he fired Mike” and so on talk indirectly hitting at VH. It’s so contrived like that girl you dumped and that suddenly shows up with a new guy having to display publicly how much “fun” she is having. I don’t mind CF news in general here, but this is not what I want to find when I come to a Van Halen news site. Its like a small dog constantly p***ing at your leg. A Van Halen News site shouldn’t provide a forum for such. You got to give it to Cherone that he never lost a bad word about VH (not that I know of at least). Btw, where are the Cherone news? Sure the guy must be doing sth? I’d take Gary and Nuno any day over Spam and Joe.

  • kenny

    ENOUGH ALREADYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

  • Jeremy

    Erick,

I bash Eddie because guys like you sit here and crap all over this. You come on EVERY Chickenfoot thread and just crap all over it. If you look carefully at the bottom of this page, this news desk was started in 1996. Not 1978-1984.

Chickenfoot is a breath of fresh air here in music these days and I for one welcome it with open arms. If you don’t like it, don’t come on every article and bash it. You started it every time I read some news about them and we got guys like you and the other “fans” crapping on it. If it’s not a Van Halen article, stay off of it.

    Rick,

Are you truly a high on here? You guys really need to do some research and read the facts about your beloved Van Halen. Your Eddie has said a million times that Montrose was a big influence on them and he liked their sound. Funny that Van Halen goes with Ted Templeman with almost every record and Montrose used him first. He also wanted Sammy to sing with Van Halen in 1978, so you need to ask yourself this question, without Sammy, there would be no Van Halen. Just imagine if Sammy took the job and there was no Roth?

  • Rick

Ah, and yeah, before the reminders come: I know that there are no news on VH to report on. Once there are, the obvious will be obvious.

Pushtoshove, I underwrite everything you said. Different trees in a different forrest.

  • FAMAC

All of these tunes start by sounding like there’s something there, but they don’t go any further. Notice they faded this clip right when the ‘chorus’ started – it’s pretty weak, from the few bars you hear.

And did I hear the lyric “wetback” in there?

But what I really can’t take is the 24-7 party-hardy vibe these guys are trying to eminate. They just seem like a bunch of old farts trying too act young. And they look older than dirt. It’s too much ALL THE TIME, and it has to be wearing thin for everyone but diehard Hagar fans.

Only Satriani seems like he’s not in on the schtick. Satriani seems to be one these guys that is strung up tighter than his guitar. I can’t stand musicians who have this attitude ‘I’m a serious musician’ and try to talk like they are intellectuals. A beginner could have written most of these licks, sorry.

If they spent half the time fleshing out these tunes that they have promoting them, I’m sure the end product would benefit.

  • pushtoshove

By the way…just my opinion but, isn’t what Warner bros is doing ( or has done ) regarding VH vids on you tube is the very thing they do before they release them on DVD…maybe a package? One can only hope.
