VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

“Mean Street,” then and now

Dave & Ed

At the press conference announcing the 2007 tour, a giddy David Lee Roth asked an excited but at times skeptical crowd of journalists and fans to “judge the band harshly” in his confidence the group could still deliver the goods on stage.

The man got his wish, as a countless reviews poured in once the tour commenced, in Sept, 2007. And despite the fact that die-hard fans were upset that Michael Anthony wasn’t part of it, most reviews, from from fans and critics alike, were extremely positive. People raved about astounding performances of classic songs that had been neglected far too long, and the joy of seeing Roth back with the band. As for the negative reviews, there were several complaints about sound quality, and there were a some shows (thankfully, very few) were fans thought that Eddie gave a sub-par performance, possibly due to drinking.

Below are two live versions of one of Van Halen’s most ass-kicking songs, “Mean Street.” One was filmed in South American in 1983, while the other was filmed during the 2008 tour.

We admit this isn’t quite an apples-to-apples comparison, as we will have to compare professionally filmed footage and soundboard audio from ’83 to footage that an audience member filmed on a consumer digital camera, in ’08.

It might seem almost unfair to Van Halen to do this, because, after all, how many bands (if any) are capable of playing a song just as good now as they did 20 to 30 years ago? Everyone (be they a plumber or a musician) tends to lose some zip on their fastball over a period of thirty years, as age is the great equalizer common to us all.

Here are the two performances of “Mean Street,” for your viewing pleasure. How does the VH of the past measure up to the current model? Draw your own conclusions, and let us know here at the VHND how you see things.

“Mean Street” 1983:

“Mean Street” 2008:

  • Pedro Veldez

Wolfie v Anthony = Who cares, at least VH are blazing again.
Old Roth v new roth = Who cares, everyone ages, the song are ageless. At least Roth is NOT Sammy.
Old Ed v young Ed = Who cares, at least he’s still playing, and now not drunken slop like he did for a while.

Rejoice in the now, that’s what VH are doing.

  • Pedro Veldez

Oh, and of course, you can’t compare the sound quality of the 2 performances. Mobile phones sounds like, err, a mobile phone. Ed’s tone is still as BROWN as the day he first heard it in his head.

  • Mr. GK

I think it’s the little cell phone camera that recorded the 2008 version that’s making it sound like it has too much tremble. The old version was recorded with an actual pro camera. I saw the show in Anaheim, CA; late 2008. It sounded thick…

  • pete

i cant help but to think this is just a token news segment to get some van halen news out there even if there isnt any.

  • Rob

Both versions sounds great, eddie’s tone it’s too much compressed and trebley right now, maybe it’s F.O.H tech’s fault… BTW in 83 they sounded and played like they were still lookin’ for a record deal…. mean and aggressive! right now they play like millionaires, the notes are still there the music it’outstanding on its own and it’s great too, michael anthony is missed period, BTW wolfgang did a great job!

  • TOP GUNslinger5150

Hey pete! Go and please yourself or have a wank over at the Chickenfoot forums for all I care, THIS IS VAN HALEN (and should be) VAN HALEN ONLY!! All you sammy lovers are so jealous that the mighty Van Halen are BACK!!!!….and there’s nothing you can do about it. How it must eat away at you LOL!!! Just listening to the latest Chickenfoot interviews is cringe worth, the supposed ‘Fun’ attitude is so fake!!

Want to see what ‘Fun’ is all about? I still get a laugh everytime I watch Van Halen’s 2007 tour press conferance!! Diamond Dave is the master, had everyone in stitches!! The man is the greatest showman of all time, he is the chosen one!!! It’s in the Rock N Roll Bible; On the 7th day God created the mighty VAN HALEN!!!!!

  • Andy

A bit off topic, but anyone got a clue as to how many 4×12 cabinets Edwards was playing through back in the days? It looks like walls and walls and walls of em’….(and what brand are they?)

  • Pete

They are both awesome. What a great tune.

Mikey is notably missing in the background vocals though, and truly, that was such a part of VH’s signature sound.

I also agree with the comment about the Wolfgang’s “treble-y” sound…it does sound like someone left the wah on too long.

I thought both of these versions were well chosen…they both are fantastic.

  • http://www.501stlegion.org skutch

Both are awesome. The 1983 clip had a different vibe from the 2008 mostly because it captured that era very well. Obviously, 25 years ago, the guys had more energy. I’m not complaining, I loved seeing the guys play together again.

  • http://www.501stlegion.org skutch

Andy, from what I’ve heard, most of those cabinets were empty. Just there for show.

  • http://mitchgalietta.com Mitch

I don’t like Ed’s tone anymore. too much chorus and too thin. No Mike hurts. Not bad but not ’83

  • SCAR

Diamond Dave – need I say more????

  • http://www.stewartcopeland.net Simon

Great, sorry, these guys haven’t rocked together since 1984 ! C’m on, you where lucky enough to see them on this tour, i really hope they come to Europe in 09/10.

Btw. : BOTH Version are awesome, VH4EVER !

  • JP

I love Van Halen, but sorry – the 1983 version is far better. The bass/drum interaction was better, the guitar playing was better (Ed skips the end of the main solo going back to rhythm early). The 1983 version sounds more like a band. Van Halen became famous from their live attitude. This is quite lacking in the 2008 version. But anyway … I am happy to see them playing again. I saw them in 83 and 08.

  • Top Jimmy

TOP GUNslinger5150 you must be kidding. you really think there’s more “groove” now? listen again to the the solo section during the old version. they sound like cream or something fer chrissake. alex and mike are in perfect tandem and locked in a solid groove while eddie wails over the top. THAT’s the jazz/blues thing. the 2008 version is retread. plus, not to start another one of these arguments, but mike is just a better bass player that wolf. it’s not even a matter of opinion, it’s just fact. mike’s a bass player with a fat tone and a solid bluesy sense of rhythm, he grew up at the same time that the other guys did, he listened to the same music growing up, he knows how to play bass better for eddie van halen than anyone on the planet and he’s a HUGE part of the reason why the old version of van halen sounded so mean.

  • http://vhnd.com wilfredvh

Both vids rocks… vh is the best!!

  • pete

i love van halen but i want real news and its time people hold them to a higher standard.

  • TK

Could be worse, I’m just glad Eddie is still vertical and tapping away on his fretboard. I hope he still has enough left to give us a couple more records. Soon.

  • Oscar

I hate to admit it, but musically they sound better now and are much tighter than they were back then. But lyrically Dave’s high pitches back then, along with Michael Anthony’s background vocals are and will remain irreplacable!

  • nick

YOu notice that eddie has to do backround vocs on the 07 tour now that mike is gone!! f wolfgang van halen. ill never go see van halen again after the last show on 10-10-07. BRING MIKE BACK OR F OFF

  • pete

gunslinger, why is it everytime someone calls van halen to task you get so upset and turn it into a sam vs dave thing?the last i checked there are 4 members in each group and a band gos much deeper then whos singing.chickenfoot is more about satch then anything and van halen depends on how well eddie is playing and what mind frame he’s in.

  • http://vhnd surfsno2008

    this is not news..

  • Bocephus

    Mikey will be missed.

As hard as it is to say…we need to work with Dave and Wolfie here..

It’s either that or we get Sam and Mikey back…and we all know that isn’t going to happen.

    Sad but true.

  • CT VH

They should re-record the song with the original “Voodoo Queen” lyrics…they still sound great, though there was a helluva lot more spontanaity on the older tours.

  • http://vhnd JCN

They should grow their hair just a tad for the next tour so they don’t look like potato and carrot choppin swabis fresh off the ship for a weekend.

Other than that good job boys.

    Val looks hot!

  • Scott

Isn’t it amazing how we ALL age…regardless of socio-economic status? It was fun to re-live in 2007, but it will never be the same as it was back then.

  • walteR

The ’83 version is the best. The groove with Mike playing bass is the best. They were hungry and full of passion.. In 08′, Eddie was still great but the groove is missing.. Lets hope that they do something soon..

  • Kenny in Florida

“so they don’t look like potato and carrot choppin swabis fresh off the ship for a weekend.” – WTF does that mean? Crack kills.

As for this. It’s not real news. Chickenfoot and hagar news is real news and belongs on the VHND site per original site vision. This stuff is the brainchild of the new VHND admins. Not really news. Just giving us some blurbs to read till more news comes in. I would prefer waiting on more news. Don’t need the filler. The filler is something that really doesn’t belong here, but nobody bitches about that.

  • Nuno B.

I thought the version with Cherone Circa 1998 was better than both!

  • pete

i agree kenny, this is just a segment that really doesnt have anything to do with news but if you call them on it there is a certain roth diehard fan on here that will go off because he’ll eat this bullshit up and ask for seconds.(top gunslinger)

  • Tman5150

I’m just f’in glad we have some form of Van Halen to listen to and/or go see. Be it new VH, the 2008 tour, Chicken foot, or just new clips on this site..Keep em comin’

  • Scotty

I saw the 08 tour 3 times, 2 shows (Boston and Providence) were great, and Worcester, Ma. was ok. I was only 8 in 83, and I discovered VH in 1984, but Ive got 650 videos on utube , and endless bootlegs of all eras VH, and I like both vids, but think the new sound is much better. Eddie has soooo much balls in his gear compared to back then, big deal if they arent running around like maniacs, and Wolfie is doing just fine, I was impressed more by each show.. Quit your whining its 2009, not 1984, so trim that mullet and get on or get off the wagon!! VH RULES!!

  • FJM

Folks, how many Rockn Roll bands from the VH era can pull off what they did with their 07 tour? These guys (other then wolfy) looked and sounded great for amount of time passed since 83…lets be honest…how many 50 plus age guys can pull that off? Big bad Billy sweet William now…but I wouldnt want them any other way!!

  • David Alexander

    to the off topic person:

Ed was not palying through all of those cabinets, 99% are just for looks. he is playing through his main speaker cabinet which is mic’d and played over the p.a.
he used to play through celestion green back speakers.

  • T.O. Mike

Both rocked!! Only thing missing from 08 was Mikey and his voice!

  • http://vhnd JCN

David Alexander Iam sure is right about the amps. It was just the cool thing to do back then…stack em up to the roof like Fuck’n KISS Yes!

Also the red peaveys on the FUCK tour only a small percent were used. At least that’s what I heard. I could be wrong.

  • Drwildthing69

First strait from the heart Diamond Dave and the king of six strings Eddie van Halen Rocked !!!!!!!!!! I saw the show here in fort lauderdale Feb 12 and feb 20th 2008 both nights right near the stage next to the cat walk and both shows were fucking amazing!!!!!!!!! Alex Van Halen was slammin , Wolfgang was good considering the shoes he has to fill. I go all the Rock shows, and Van halen delivered the goods. I love Van Halen just like half the fucking Planet. I can’t wait to hear the new music. I heard you missed them well their back and ready to Rock the Planet . V.D.F.A use your brain and figure it out

  • BTD

The 83′ version is NUTZZZZ! NO COMPARISON!! I love any and all versions of VH. The band in 83′ was the most wicked band on the planet…PERIOD!!!!!!!!!

  • Brian

I’ve seen Van Halen over a dozen times – most of those were before they were signed by WB. Saw them 8 time at Whiskey in Hollywood. Magic Mountain, Pasadena Civic Center twice in ’77. Zoetrope Studios ’1984′ rehaersal party and on and on. Point is, that Dave’s voice is shot. Period. He’s got nodes and will probably need surgery before too much more time passes. He can’t sing the songs worth a shit and that is just the reality of it. God bless ‘em though for getting back together. I saw the last tour in Dec ’07 at Staples in LA. Great songlist but Ed cannot play his old stuff like he used to either; his solo was a disaster. He began playing somehting from eruption or little guitars, etc. and would quit. Very frustrating for us die-hard fans to see this. So I don’t know or understand what all of these ‘positive comments’ from the media are based upon – other than sheer fantasy / wishful thinking. It’s kind of like the crashing stock markets – if enough people say things are great, others may believe it and repeat the message. Not this VH fan. I saw them at their peak and their recordings will live on forever. No rock outfit came close to VH in any category, or did it better live than VH. It is a real shame that the R&R Hall of Fame opportunity was squandered by the band. That was a real kick-in-the-ass to many people – mostly the fans. Van Halen should WAKE UP and recognize this fact and try to make up for it somehow by releasing a polished early-VH-inspired album….

  • phillster

Finding&Getting this stuff took 4ever-but it was worth it.
    “WINNERS?-THEY COME&GO..LEGENDS?-THEY`RE FOREVER!!SLAMDUNK!!!
    seek&you shall find.PEACE

  • Gee Lopz

    Sao Paulo, Brazil, January, 1983!!

Yeah! The best performance definitivelly! The band was in the top of his game.

This version is closer of the original recording. And played with fury!! Rock it!!

(And Michael Anthony always be better than Wolfie). I´m sorry Eddie!!

Today, the performance is good too, but “Everyone (be they a plumber or a musician) tends to lose some zip on their fastball over a period of thirty years, as age is the great equalizer common to us all.” I Agree with that.

    Van Halen still rocks!!

I wish and dream that someday Van Halen come back here, Sao Paulo, Brazil and play all the classics again!!

That show (in 1983) was the first and the last show of the band here!!

It´s time to come back guys!!

  • C’Mon Now!

Brian, you post is the most honest one I have read from any Dave era fan. Thank you for the being honset and admitting that Roth can’t sing, and Eddie is “losing it”- for lack of a better word. I have felt this as well, I like Dave VH and Sam VH, and I for one saw/ heard that Dave was loosing it back in 1986 with the “Greatest Hits” release. I can say with “Cant get this stuff no more” and “Me wise magic” I truly love the vibe of the music on both songs. Eds guitar in “C-G-T-S-N-M-” takes me back to Diver Down, a real clean and fresh sound. The other thing about both those songs that really makes an impression is of course Mikey’s harmonies- the are truly unique, an unmistakable sound, that sound is just as much of VH as Eddies playing or Al’s powerful snare.

  • Jim

All you morons who claim that they miss Mikey…..

That is the dumbest comment yet. The bass player is such a small piece of the puzzle. It’s like for 25 yrs, he was no big deal. Now, he left and all of a sudden, everybody is crying for Mikey. What a bunch of crap. You even claim that his voice is missed. Bullcrap… He’s about 3rd down on the vocals. Wolfy replaced him fine and he barely had to open his mouth. Mikey is a good guy, but you Mikey lovers are pathetic.

  • Skutch

I love it. The chickenfoot fans are complaining about VH content on the VH site. Unbelievable. Just relax and drink some whiskey.

  • http://VHND.com Bosephis Mode

83 was much tighter and more enthusiastic. They captured more of the intricacies of the original recording. Hate to say it, but they also had Mike in the band back then. His vocals are nowhere to be found and would have propped Dave up a little. I know Dave is older, but move a little more (last tour); you are not in a wheelchair yet.

  • Kayzer Sozay

I love how many times people (Topgunslinger5150 for example) say stuff like “you Sammy fans are so jealous that VH is back” as though one can’t be a fan of Sammy Hagar and VH at the same time. Dude, VH kicks ass with Roth or with Hagar because they are VH. Period.

Thinking about it, my first hard-on may have been the time I first heard VH (Diver Down – which isn’t even their best album). I loved the vibe of Al, Mikey, Ed and Dave. When Sammy replaced Dave, I still loved the vibe of the band. Yes, there were more “soft” tunes but there were also tunes that rocked every bit as hard as anything VH did with Roth. And there is just no denying three things about the Hagar era. First, Sammy had (and still has) a hell of a set of pipes. Second, VH seemed happier than they ever did as a band and the attitude and joy was infectious for many people (not necessarily with the original fanbase). Third, VH enjoyed levels of success and popularity that they never had with Roth (all albums went #1).

I don’t know why these truths bother so many people like Topgunslinger5150. I totally understand why you love Roth. Hell, I would give Roth the nod over Hagar in terms of charisma and star-quality if not technical ability. But it always seems like people who put down Sammy or people that enjoy VH with Sammy are not really true VH fans but only David Lee Roth fans. And those that say shit like “Sammy lovers are jealous that VH are back” just prove that really, they are just jealous that VH remained popular with Sammy while Dave faded into obscurity until the reunion.

That said, I’m glad Sammy and Mike seem happy with Chickenfoot. I like what I’m hearing and excited for the album. I’m also very glad that Dave is back with the band. I only wish that they would get to putting out some new music. Because many of the posters here are right, this entire story is just filler – we haven’t had any real new VH news is a while. Peace.

  • redarrow5150

I give Dave a lot of credit…he sounded good this tour. I’m still not crazy seeing Wolf playing bass or doing backup vocals. Several people here have mentioned the energy and given Wolfie’s age he doesn’t bring much energy. Granted it’s his first tour and it’s a lot to ask but I’m not the one who brought him into Van Halen. Eddie’s playing is good but not nearly as good as he sounded in VH3. His playing in that day was freaking amazing. The guys sounded good on this tour but the energy didn’t offset the sound…but then again they are older so I give them lots of slack.

  • http://vhnd chico da man

1983 Rio = VH in their prime plus some white powder, plenty Jack and some P waiting backstage = Spectacular!

    2008 = VH + tons or rehearsing + tons of disipline + 24 years between = pretty F-ing fantastic!

Glad to see em back and having fun together. Hopefully Dave will continue working on those vocals for the fans (He sounded way better than any of his solo music and tours). From there just add back in the old screams and couple jumps off the high riser and your back to 1983. The band – as good as before, with just a little less movement around the stage. This was all just a warmup. The 07 – 08 tour by the way was their R & R HOF induction performance. F the RRHOF….

  • Jeff

Micheal’s vocals are missing these days. Eddie’s sound is better with the improvement in today’s equipment it sounds sharper. Eddie is a little more radical these days the video from ’83 is so straight forward. The best part of the song is the opening riff. I think this is one of the greatist riffs of all time it is certainly underrated. He plays notes and creates sounds from a guitar that is so unique. I am sorry but to me Van-Halen is all about Eddie. It doesn’t matter who is on what instrument or mic, the man is a god he is the only reason to go see them.

  • C’Mon Now!

Kayzer- you hit it right on the head.
