Sammy & Joe take part in all-star jam

Last Night: Tom Morello, Steve Earle, Wayne Kramer, Sammy Hagar, Boots Riley, Corey Taylor, Joe Satriani, and Damian Kulash

By Jennifer Maerz in Last Night

Thursday, Mar. 26 2009 @ 11:57PM

It was midway through the Tom Morello hootenanny when Rage’s shredding machine grinned at the crowd and said, “Let me remind you, you all paid $15 to get in tonight. That’s like a buck a superstar.”

Actually, if you were gonna  do the math, by the end of the night, we’d been entertained by Morello and his Freedom Fighter Orchestra, Steve Earle, Wayne Kramer of the MC5, Sammy Freakin’ Hagar, Boots Riley of The Coup, Corey Taylor of Slipknot (sans mask of course), Joe Satriani, and Damian Kulash of OK Go, so technically it came out to something like $1.87 a superstar. But really, everyone at Slim’s was too busy pounding fists with fierce excitement to remember exactly how much they’d spent to get in. No matter the cost, they were getting their pennies’ worth–both in the energy the audience fed to the stage to the goodwill the headliners shot back at their fans. There was a lot of love in the room, man (and a lot of men in the room). Not to mention a lot of dollar bills that went to a righteous cause, thanks to the activist concept behind Morello’s Justice Tour, a singular concert that has you leaving feeling real good.

The political thrust behind these tours is, as Morello explained, to “bail out people, not banks.” An alternate version of this mantra, which he also espoused during the three-hour long show: “Feed the poor, fight the war, rock the fuck out.”

The Rage/Audioslave/Nightwatchman succeeded on pulling off all fronts last night. He gathered together a gaggle of rock gods during the day to personally wrap and hand out burritos with Project Open Hand, a San Francisco organization that feeds the needy, and one that received 100 percent of the ticket sales for last night’s show (plus all the $1, $5, and $10 bills people stuffed in its coffers by the end of the night at Morello’s repeated suggestions). But equally importantly, he also gathered those same ax slingers to get rowdy from the stage at night.

Personally, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the evening–I imagined an “unplugged” event full of acoustic protest songs. But while there was a little bit of the low-key (Slipknot’s Taylor came out with an acoustic guitar and warned, “I’m not going to rock the fuck out of you, I’m going to soothe the fuck out of you” before heading into emo territory with one of his own songs and covering both Tom Petty and Ray LaMontagne) nearly everything played was a 20 an energy scale of 1 to 10.

But you know things are going to get insane when the evening starts out with Wayne Kramer playing a sarcastic little ditty about the size of his amp. From there, Morello hyped the crowd by playing his “Arm the Homeless” electric guitar for a couple Nightwatchman songs, including the funk punk protest anthem “Whatever It Takes.” And then came more big guns.

“This is a great thing in our own hometown–Joe and I had to come down. We didn’t even rehearse, but that’s ok.” So said Sammy Hagar, downing a Corona and speaking of his neighbor Joe Satriani, who had just performed a couple songs of guitar mastery/wankery depening on your level of fandom (personally I find his music incredibly cheeseball, despite the obvious technical skills). Sammy was also a cheeseball of course–in a dopey, kinda awesome way. His big golden curls bounced atop his round face as the dude did leaps around the stage and did a cover of the bluesy oldie “I’m Going Down.”

Even better was the band’s version of the awesome butt rock oldie “Rock Candy,” which Hagar wrote back in the ’70s with Montrose (he kicked off the song by announcing, “In 1973, a little band came out of California called Montrose.”) Hagar sometimes sounded like a stubbed cat on the high screams, but overall? “Rock Candy” came off supremely rockin.

All that was only halfway through the night too. Highlights from the second half included a long set from Steve Earl, who played with nearly all the guests over the course of the night (including Spider Stacy of the Pogues) and covered everyone from Townes Van Zant (who he recently recorded a tribute album to) and Bruce Springsteen (“The Ghost of Tom Joad”) to playing a rousing rendition of his own “Copperhead Road.”

Other great moments: Local firebrand Boots Riley took a turn on the mic, teasing the crowd with the excellence of the upcoming Riley/Morello project Street Sweeper by playing two tracks off their upcoming album (my gut? That project’s gonna be huge if it incites half the riot it received last night) and then really knocking it out of the park with a cover  of M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” that got the whole crowd singing along.

By this point, Morello had played the guitar slide style, one handed, with his teeth, and in so many other incarnations there was nothing else to do, really, but get everyone (except Satriani and Hagar, who’d disappeared) up on stage…along with OK Go frontman Damian Kulash and sing “This Land is Your Land.” And that’s exactly what Morello did, prefacing the song with a reminder that “Real change doesn’t come from the oval office; It comes from people like you,” and the threat that the greedy Wall St. bastards should be prosecuted–”If not by the courts then by you!” (Big cheers to that one. Look out AEG execs).

If getting everyone to donate to the homeless, sing along to old Woody Guthrie tunes, and jump high into the air was all it took to change a country, Tom Morello would be the most benevolent, most rock ‘n’ roll dictator alive. But as it stood last night, the dude still rules. He proved he can still provoke people’s minds as he puctures their eardrums, creating a truly one of a kind show that won’t soon be forgotten.

By the way: The show left me thinking, randomly, about Noise Pop. Morello’s show was just the kind of unique star personality collision/collaboration that our local music festival should be fostering. As I wrote in a recent column, San Francisco’s biggest pop festival should be using its connections to create more “only in SF” experiences that you can’t get elsewhere.  We should leave a Noise Pop event at least once feeling like we saw something we couldn’t see anywhere else. Morello’s Justice tour did just that, pulling from the country, punk, metal, hip-hop, and pop worlds to create a temporary place where everyone–from the disparate artists to the disparate music the performers selected–all got along. I can’t say I’m a fan of everyone who got on the stage at Slim’s, but all thrown together I had a blast at that show. I really hope at some point Noise Pop can create a similar evening built on wild collaborations and the element of surprise.

That was bad ass guys! Thanks for the clip, thanks for the article!

  • Gee Lopz

AGAIN: THIS IS NOT A VAN HALEN NEWS…

  • phil

again, there are no van halen news…

  • Top Jimmy

    again this is…. shyuuudaap

  • nick

    again this is…

  • pete

dont blame chickenfoot for vhnd putting this stuff on,blame van halen for not giving them anything.

  • Joe

There is no Van Halen news unless you count Eddie selling a new over-priced piece of gear.

Be happy for any news about people who used to be in Van Halen making MUSIC.

  • Skutch

I’m not sure Corey Taylor is worth a dollar, but I digress.

That’s classic. Blame VH for this being posted on a VH site? Uh…you go girl!

  • C’mon Now!

All you guys who say sammy is a no-body: I dont think “No-bodys” jam with Tom Morello, Steve Earle to name just two. People do not realize how respected Sammy is among muscicians from all walks. BTW: I know its difficult for you DLRs to figure out, but you see Sammy was in VH wheather you realize/admit it or not and therefore when He does somehting of interest it will be posted on the VHND. See how that works? VH does nothing except sell stuff with their name on it and it gets posted on VHND. Sammy and mike decide to actually make music and it gets posted on VHND. Hang in there guys somedayVH will put new music out and you huys will have your day to “shine”. In all seriousness I hope they do put out new music for you guys, I think eleven years ( and counting) is a bit much to have to wait

  • http://vhnd 50yroldfan

Way to go C’mon Now! the knuckleheads don’t seem to get this. when asked who should’ve replaced DLR nobody seems to be able to give an answer.

  • DiamondDLR

A question for those that think “Sammy News” isn’t “VH News”:

Is Eddie selling a new humbucker “VH News”?

    Wrong.

    It’s VH Advertising.

  • Rocko

That was sick, Sammy!!! Keep Rockin’ Rock Candy!!!

  • Erick

    I like EVH advertising

  • nate

If the Phrase “Shut Up and Play Yer Guitar!” applies more fitting to anyone it’s to “commie” Morello. When is he moving to China?

  • C’Mon Now!

Right on NATE! Commies are all about helping out others, right? I mean after all, isn’t believing in and pursuing equality as well ashuman rights what all those commies are about? God forbid if a musician decides to believe in a cause and pursue other interests outside of music. What do you do for a living nate? do you believe in or fight for anything outside of you “job”? Do you voulunteer?, help people?, orbelieve that everyone deserves equality? Or do you just go to you job day in and day out, come home, drink some cold ones, watch nascar and slap the “ol-lady around? Yeah, Morello is a commie- you fucking tool! I think you trailer needs a vaccumming

  • pushtoshove

i think others want to be here ( other bands ) its a hot spot thats good for advertising other bands…….VH news desk on the cusp of whats happening….Ironically it’s nothing to do with the Band Van Halen’s current status….

  • unchainedonfire&outtaluv

well said nate, the great irony here , you would NEVER find tom morello moving to a communist country, he choses america over all other countries he could reside in, and why? because america is the birthplace of rock, and are the leaders of the free world because of CAPITALISM and the american dream. which is what everyone in the audience has to thank for allowing them the freedom to attend a rock concert in public and in safety, and even lil tommy wouldnt be there and be able to have free speech if it werent for life liberty and the american way, and all of the soldiers that have fought in wars to defend it.

  • http://vhnd surfsno

look if van halen did half as much as sammy has i’d be happy. i look forward to new music with ed and dave.
the fact is the guy has said this so many times before
the fact remains sammy delivers and is one of the post popular guys in hard rock among his peers.
    like it or not.

  • http://vhnd surfsno

i live in china and its not communist
    its capitalist!
do your research and stop watching fox!

  • http://www.myspace.com/aarxn aarxn

i understand that VanHalen doesnt have alot of news out there, but i think its a bit wrong to have all this Sammy coverage yet there is no Gary Cherone coverage at all!
while not as popular as VanHagar, VanCherone is still very much a part of VH history and was a part of the band just as Sammy or Dave, or Mike etc. why not cover his stories?

if the “well Sammy is out there making music!” applies here, why do they post a story about every single move the guy makes. i go to this site and i see articles right at the top “SAMMY GOES TO WENDYS AND ORDERS A 99CENT DOUBLE STACK!” with a quote “Yeah im just out here eatin a burger man! i couldnt do that in VanHalen, so now im just havin a good time and eatin a burger!”

by that logic, we should get an article for everytime Wolfgang puts a song on his ipod. not only would it be more intresting, but atleast Wolfgang is in VH!

  • http://vhnd surfsno

if this was a purely van halen news site it would have shut down a long time ago.
sam was the second lead singer of van halen just as long as dave as just as successful and was inducted in the rock hall
sure we can keep reading for news articles from 1981 but at least sammy does something for his fans. oh and rage is the shite.
rage and living colour are too of the most underrated bands of all time minus montrose and van hagar.

  • Adrian

joe satch has nothing to do with van halen and sammy is out… take this news somewhere else.

  • Jor-L5150

    morello is a COMMUNIST .

—after he made millions of $$$$ in free market capitolist america. THEN he touts his marxism. goes to cuba and waves a cuban flag to impress castro.

  • Jor-L5150

you haters need to make your OWN website where you ONLY cover van halen ( official-current lineup ONLY ) news. you want a ” official and only curent lineup van halen site ” –? MAKE ONE. all 11 of you can post there.

i will pay for the cobwebs as you post updates every 7-15 years.

  • http://vhnd surfsno

the only thing ed has done for the last decade is rip sam and mike, try to hawk his products, and brag about how much music he has written and lastly to promote his son.
sam, mike, and even dave know how to treat their fans.
ed has no clue and alex does what ed does.
i sure hope for new music but i am very excited about the new chickenfoot project
because somebody actually did something besides TALK.

  • Frank

Let’s just wait and see if Ed’s right.
He said he’s gonna get married this summer, his son will graduate etc. and then, according to Ed, we can finally expect some new music to come.
If there won’t be any (hope jr’s grades are OK ;-) ), we definitely know he’s full of it…but I hope he’s not.

    Frank, NL

  • Erick

    Yeah, CFND

  • nate

What’s wrong with NASCAR? Self Hating little biatch. Communist leaders always live it up and preach a bunch a BS to everybody else. Equality, keep your equality away from my little paycheck pal.

  • mjc

the vhnd does a terrific job,it’s not their fault that eddie and alex are the laziest guys in rock.

  • nate

Let me say I think Morello is a great musician and awesome guitarist (reminds me of EVH in some respects) and is a genuinely a good person. I don’t agree with all his means but I think his end is he really does care about people. This is America so I should let him say whatever he wants although, I don’t agree with a lot of it

  • C’Mon Now!

Nate- “Whats wrong with Nascar”. Nothing Nate, thanks for the visual. “Self hating little biatch”. So if someone does not subscribe to you “views” they are self-hating?, is that correct? Nate, I am far from self hating.

  • SCAR

I’m glad I got some VH jamming, because you people are depressing. Lights, Camera Action……………

  • http://VHND Jason

This is not VH news!!! Its great that Sammy and Mike are puttin some music out there, but lets keep it to Van Halen! Thats what this website says…Van Halen News Desk! Not the I use to be in Van Halen News Desk! Morello is a Commie…Plain and simple!!! He is free to spew his Anti-American drool though! Lets GO VH, lets start hearing the New stuff!!!

  • pete

morello also supports a certain cop killer from philadelphia and i cant just look past that.

  • ace5150

“This is not Van Halen new…….blah,blah,blah….”

It’s like you guys are stuck in a time warp and it’s 1984.

The truth is you guys are jealous and afraid of any success Sammy, Mikey, and Chickenfoot may have. You’re scared that this collaboration just might work.

You sit on your little VH pedestals and look down on anybody who just appreciates good music just because you’re not getting the music you want.

    It’s really sad and pathetic.

  • Mch20s

This is very much Van Halen news. Sammy was a huge part of Van Halen and their history. Didn’t see anybody bitch about Dave being on here when he wasn’t in Van Halen. I love Dave just as much as anyone on here but you Dave buttboys are unfreakin believable. Get over it all ready.

  • Skutch

Ace, of course the CF collaboration worked, they recorded a CD. Problem is, half of the people who visit here aren’t interested. Once again, we are not jealous of Sammy, we just think his music sucks. Don’t read your notions into our statements. I get plenty of the music I want because there are other bands besides VH and CF. So, YOU go girl! Stop being so boring.

By the way, this is not Van Halen news…..blah blah blah

  • nate

Yeah, those who support communism do have a lot of self hatred unless they are advocating it for everybody other than themselves as many do. Um you want to stereotype me? Well listen here wasnt EVH at the Fresh Fit 500 when he first started making appearances again. I am sure Mike Anthony is a huge nascar fan and that the majority of American Van Hagar/Van Halen fanbase are most likely nascar fans as well. David lee Roth compared the last two VH tours to nascar competitions. What visual? I got an on-ramp comin’ through my bedroom and I got a refugee girl from a communist countries that thinks you suck.

  • http://www.myspace.com/aarxn aarxn

ace5150: im not hoping for Chickenfoot to crash and burn, i wish any band all the best, but im just kind of sick of hearing about it! everything is just Chickenfoot beat over my head over and over. how much news could there be on them? …okay, they all got together and made a band, making an album due out in june, heres a track listing. all these rapid updates could be handled in ONE freaking update!

like i said, its true, there is NO VanHalen news at the moment so im not pissed about no news, im pissed because this has become the Chickenfoot News Desk. how about some updates on Gary once in a while? hes been out there making music and such.

  • nate

Good Suggestions aarxn. Hell, why not Gary? He is definately part of VH History. Didn’t he get back w/Extreme. I’d love to see a Rage against the “machine” tour rider. They couldn’t keep a reunion together long enough because although they spread lots of propoganda they couldn’t sustain it and have it “green” enough.Their solar powered tour bus broke down or something. Well I digress.

  • nate

Funny thing is that group would only jam to van hagar songs anyways.

  • nate

I think I just remembered that I don’t care about chicken foot.

  • http://www.myspace.com/aarxn aarxn

nate: yeah Gary is back with Extreme i think, he had another band called Tribe of Judah that was pretty awesome!

back when VH was inducted to the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, i emailed Gary on his myspace page asking if he was upset that he wasnt a part of the induction and he actually wrote back!
say what you want, but Gary is a classy guy and has never bad mouthed ANY one in the VH soap, and always has nice things to say about them.

and to be honest, VanHalen 3 was loads better than most of the VanHagar albums (like OU812 and Balance) so i think people need to respect the guy.

  • Skutch

I agree 100% Aarxn. NO VH news is better than CF news.

  • Nat

Can the VHND just queue up all the comments and save everyone the time of having to say the same thing over and over again?

    This isn’t VH news.
Sammy sucks, why do we have to see this?
All we hear from VH is advertising for Ed’s new guitar.
It’s been eleven years since a new album.
Ed doesn’t care about the fans.
VH has no respect for the fans.
    DLR is a has-been.

    etc.

If you just queue up the comments to autopost over a day or two, we’ll get the same experience with a whole lot less wear and tear on our keyboards.

  • Erick

I think we’re ready for another Van Halen tour !!!

  • unchainedonfire&outtaluv

hey -”C’Mon Now!”-: wow, typical response of an extremist radical, you dont have a leg of reason to stand on so you resort to stooping so low as making up hypotheical situations such as someone beating their wife, about the others in the discussion, and then pull a high and mighty by trying to makes claims of superiority through deeds. i mean come on(no pun intended) u are trying to equate communism to volunteer & charity work? lol EVERYONE can volunteer and do charity work regardless of race, creed, or ideology, what you have with morello is someone crossing the line of brainwashing by hiding behind things like activism to bait and switch political ideology, you can do that if you want, it IS a free country, but guess what it? is a free country BECAUSE OF CAPITALISM(once again the great irony), and just to educate a bit , communism is NOT founded in charity and volunteer work as you are implying(or have been fooled by morello’s propaganda into interrelating), it is a branch of socialism, which both seek to strip wealth and power from people to give to people who don’t have it, the “commoners”. in a society such as america where there are(for the majority) honest people who have EARNED and WORKED HARD for there wealth and position, and everyone is free to work hard and become something, there is NO justicfication WHATSOEVER for trying to punish them for that or strip them of it, or take anything from them to spread it around to others, and furthermoe government handouts simply do not work it only squeezes and punishes the people who worked hard to earn things, and gives it to the people who haven’t learned the value of that and it is squandered, like the saying “you can give a man a fish and feed him for a day, or teach a man to fish and feed him for a lifetime.” these “commoners” shouldn’t be given fish, they are in a free country and they should pick themselves up and educate themselves in how to fish if that is what they want.

  • Matt from Australia

This news is not even remotely related to anything Van Halen! Gary Cherone was once a part of VH, but we never see anything about the reformed Extreme, the same should go for Sammy Hagar…if fans want news on sammy they should either get it from his own website or chickenfoots. Sammy is not a part of Van Halen!!!!!!!!!

  • Matt from Australia

ace5150 – it has nothing to do with VH fans being jealous. Just for arguements sake, if Sammy became the new lead singer for Metallica, does that mean the VHND would have a news category dedicated to Metallica? Im just saying the news being posted on this site, largely has nothing to do with Van Halen, and really should consider changing the websites name….

  • SCAR

    Yawn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
