“Hot for Teacher” – Air Drum

The Air Drummer in the video above, Ari Gold, actually stars in a new comedy about air drumming. He contacted VHND.com wanting to share the video with us and give us some info on his movie. Here’s his email:

Hello fellow Van Halen fans!  I’m a film-director and sometimes-drummer, and I made a comedy about air-drumming and the American Dream, which Neil Peart (Rush) called “the best rock movie in many a year.”  It features Jane Lynch from “Glee” and Michael McKean from “Spinal Tap,” among other things – I hope you see it!  While I was on tour with the movie, I was invited to be a judge at the Air Guitar World Championships in Finland.  I performed as a special-guest, taking the air-guitarists to school, Alex Van Halen-style!  I hope you like it – and please check out the actual movie trailer.

All the best,

Ari (aka Power)

P.S. My favorite Van Halen song is “Light Up the Sky” – why doesn’t anyone talk about that masterpiece?

Well everyone has their own hobby, well I am a big fan all air insrumments, you know that drumkit from the OU812 tour. I’m a really happy owner of that kit :)

  • R A 812

    Hummm….Well….Ummmmm. Interesting?

  • Matt L.

Being a drummer,(translation: I have a kit and I hit it) Hot for Teacher was an excellent choice! Sadly air drumming looks way goofier than air guitar. Still, it looked like this guy really practiced!

  • temple5150

AWESOME! Love it, can’t wait to see the movie. “Light Up the Sky” is MY favorite Van Halen song too. As many times as I request it on my local classic rock radio station (102.5 KZOK, Seattle) they NEVER play it…I don’t know why? What is the mystery behind that? Could it be that the lit up sky is the aliens that Sammy refers to, and no one wants the two worlds to collide? I don’t know..but YES, rock on Ari, rock on, “Light Up the Sky” forever!! \m/

  • =VH=Rob

Light Up The Sky is a great song. Like Matt, I play drums as well. While air drumming is fun for that tasty fill when listening to music sometimes, most drummers I know always have something to bang on; a desk, dashboard, chair arm, and the drum that’s always there, the leg. So there’s usually not a great use for air drumming. Great choice on Hot for Teacher though, one of the baddest drums songs ever.

This movie looks like some weird cross between Balls of Fury and Napoleon Dynamite. I’ll probably check it out nonetheless.

  • phillster

    This Looks F N FUNNY!!!

  • DiamondInTheBuff

Well, ladies and gentlemen, that shows to go you that music is truly universal, and for every Shaolin monk trying to become one with fabric of the space-time continuum, there’s a skinny white kid jammin out sans instrument. The world is an insane melange of the finest free spirits and those who only dwell within the confines of their minds. This movie is on my long lists of things to be done!

  • Pete

Hey, this is awesome! I happen to be from Finland, born and raised in the city where the annual Air Guitar World Championships are held! The place is called Oulu, and I miss it, though I’m lovin’ California… Leave it to us Finns to come up with the crazy stuff, like the wife-carrying championships and air guitar contests, go Finland!!! :D

  • Atomic Pete

Love it!! I predict an AVH air drumming exercise DVD
coming soon to the VH store.

    =VH= Rules!!

  • skutch

I’m totally going to see it.

  • ME!!

    Uh…yeah.

What has the world come to when people can get on stage in front of a crowd and do what most teens used to do in front of a mirror…and get cheered for it?

What’s next? A nose picking contest?

  • 51504VH

    That was some funny shit…lol.

  • Halen Goer

    Put the bong down people….geeeezzz!

  • http://james5313@sbcglobal.net james

Perfect new flavor for this generation of video game, guitar hero, lazy ADD motivated kids ; )

Why would actually learning the drums be cool?

  • anythingleftinthatbottle

    I’ll give it a go!

  • Darth Hater

    Really???
Is this what is considered “talented” now???
People actually cheer for this whole “air guitar/drum” nonsense???
This is the same shit I used to do when I was in my bedroom BEFORE I learned to play an instument. WTF.

  • Scott

I really wanted to hate this and wanted to say something mean/funny here but it’s a comedy and I giggled the whole time it played. I guess that was the point.

    Good job.

  • Halen High

Light Up The Sky – one of my Top 10 all-time favourite VH tunes.

  • Reid Falcon

Light Up The Sky is a masterpiece. I wish they wouldve made more songs in that direction. Kinda psychedelic…

  • Expanded Consciousness

“You have the long, golden locks of David Lee Roth.” Hahaha!!!!

  • RobCT

I’ll take it for what it is, just plain funny! I have to agree with James. I’ve taught guitar and all my students say the same thing…”this isn’t like the video game at all!” Then they quit!

  • Roth_Leaps_83

Amusing, but I may be a little old for this stuff. Air guitar became all the rage in the mid-80′s and I grew bored of it back then.

I’m still waiting for the Holy Grail of Van Halendom — the complete 1981 Oakland Fair Warning concert on DVD or Blu-ray. Professionally mastered in 7.1 surround. We all know Eddie has the film reels in his vault. He needs to release it and do justice to the glory of the greatest rock show ever captured on celluloid. Please Ed….do the right thing….before we all die.

  • Waldo

Bring back Michael Anthony to play bass guitar for Van Halen. Van Halen would then be complete and VH could then do an album and tour.

  • http://None Dave Vincent

Did you ever notice any time you see a contest on TV of people playing air guitar or air drums it completely, completely sucks? They don’t even make it look realistic and play the parts right. They just obnoxiously jump up and down, flail their arms and smile annoyingly. Then braindead people applaud.

Now if they actually added technique and made it look like they were playing the instrument (while mixing in some showmanship), that would be entertaining.

And yes, I take my air guitar very seriously.

  • Xavier MAiA

check out Yngwie Malmsteen cover of Light Up The Sky. Hell of a shredder but i still prefer Ed’s

  • Tater Salad

RobCT: That is just sad. For me guitar hero(yeah, I bought the VH version) just encouraged me to pick up a guitar (along with some other factors). And as soon as I did, I realized it was nothing like the game, it was WAY better!!!

Dave Vincent: What kind of air guitar do you play? ;) haha

I could totally win an air guitar competition with my epic scissors kick! :) And it looks like it might be a funny movie too.

  • Bo sox

    Awesome!

  • http://None Dave Vincent

I play the instrument I have, right here I sayyy

  • johnh

That was some excellent double kick drum work at the start.. followed by the Toms workout and then the ride cymbal.. and a lovely piece of air stick catching too………. no wonder he got top scores…………

  • http://www.facebook.com/guitaristjohnnybeane johnny beane

    Loved this film!
I actually have an official headband – Thanks again Ari.
Been telling my friends about this film for months.

  • Dave

Whats wrong with you people? This is one of the Dumbest Fucking things I have ever seen, How did they ever get Jane Lynch to the pile of Shit ….. Straight to DVD, WHATS THAT TELL YA? This could possibly be one of the worst movies ever made ..

  • Reni

Light up the sky is an awesome track and I was just thinking the other day that no one ever talks about it. It has a great bridge section where Ed plays this syncopated riff – it’s amazing – then there’s the drum solo followed up by a brilliant guitar solo. Great riff, lyrics, harmonies, it is a good track on my favourite VH album. Rock on.

  • Brad

Gotta go with Dave on this one. WTF? “Air” anything has always been pretty stupid. If you are playing an instrument without the instrument present, then you are dancing.

    Air drums my ass…..

  • spinblastr

This is a Napolean Dynamite rip off that actually came out 4 years ago and bombed. Rotten Tomatoes calls it a real stinker.

  • Michael B

I see some of you idiots have never laid hands on a drumset before. I don’t know one drummer that didn’t get their start by playing air drums…or for those times when a drum kit was not available. You guys need to get out more. Awesome clips.

  • RobCT

I would still rather see this than someone lip syncing! Again, I think it’s hilarious!

  • onanboy

Best Alex drumming IMHO is the track before Light Up The Sky, Outta Love Again.

He is really in the pocket on that one, it swings.

  • chris

WTF is wrong with people these days, this reminds me of all these jackasses lip-syncing to músic on YouTube and becoming stars. And for What? there’s no talent and people are entertained by this garbage. There needs to be a line drawn here people, quit watching bullshit like this plz.

  • phillster

Some of you seem way too criticle to understand the joke here.Of course Air drumming`s ridiculous. The humor is watching these poor buffoons take themselves so seriously.
    You should identify with that.

  • =VH=Rob

Michael B, you now know one drummer that didn’t start with air drums. Like I said before, you always have a knee, whether it’s standing up, sitting down. Been doing it for 27 years. If you haven’t had your mom, grandma, sister, wife, or friend tell you to shut the fuck up and stop banging drums on the desk, car dashboard, kitchen table, knees, etc, then I don’t know what to say. Air drumming to me says “I’ve got this wicked lick in my head but can’t actually play it”.

  • Veghalen

The carbon power plant in the flick….

  • DLR7884

Love the look back at FW….just lose this garbage going forward.
