DAVID LEE ROTH’s ‘DLR Band’ album now available for download
DLR Band sounds closer to classic Van Halen than any other David Lee Roth solo album save Eat ‘Em And Smile. Nothing goes better with that Van Halen-esque guitar playing than Diamond Dave’s irreplaceable vocals and lyrics. It’s a brilliant album that we highly recommend, and it’s available on for download for the first time. 14 down-and-dirty songs for $9.99 at iTunes or just $8.99 at Amazon
DLR Band track listing:
01. Slam Dunk! (David Lee Roth, John Lowery, Bob Marlette)
02. Blacklight (Roth, Lowery, Marlette)
03. Counter-Blast (Roth, Lowery, Marlette)
04. Lose the Dress (Keep The Shoes) (Roth, Terry Kilgore)
05. Little Texas (Roth, Lowery, Marlette)

Brilliant album? Seriously, WTF?
I’m a huge DLR fan, and have bought every solo album he’s done. In my opinion, the DLR Band album is the worst of the lot by far. The only song with any decent chops is Little Texas…the rest is just mediocre rock-filler - just like most of the songs on Chickenfoot’s album.

Dave rocks. His first solo effort, Eat’em and Smile, is one of the best albums this world has ever seen.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:59 am
I like it! Dave’s voice is kinda shot, but I like the vibe.
Best song is Black Sand imo.

This is not Van Halen News!!! Hahahahaha! That’s what every stupid chickenfoot hater must say, ah?

Hey BubbaCo ,
Watch yer mouth boy and stop being a hater….. At least CF is doing something and it sounds damn good.. Wait another 5 yrs for Eddie & Dave to do something…

a great CD it rocks

Rodney, it worked for the Beatles, Stones, Led Zep and countless others. Nothing wrong with selling your music (new or old) any way possible. That being said, I haven’t even heard this album. That’s how out of touch I am with Dave music past Lil’ Ain’t Enough
June 9th, 2009 at 6:33 am
Lose the Dress,Keep the Shoes!–Gotta love Diamond Dave! I totally disagree with BubbaCo, I think it’s a solid album and a great follow up to the very weak effort on ” Your filthy little Mouth”–but thats just my opinion. I was lucky enough to see him in 99′ opening up for Bad Co.–Great show but I wished he would have done a 1/2 dozen songs from the album.Instead of promoting the album, I think he tried to show Ed & Al he could still be the “Diamond Dave” from 84′ because of their comments after the 96′ debacle.Anyway, looking foward to new music and another tour.

Its all so retrospective. This isn’t news, its not new, its just getting money for old rope. They might as well re-remaster the original 6 albums and say “Hey! Look! Van Halen!”
Aww man what happened to my VAN HALEN news desk, all I see is a load of crap about David Lee Roth. I think I’ll go cry in the corner because Eddie and Alex don’t do anything interesting anymore.

Ray Luzier => Incredible drummer !

Bought the DLR BAND album back in the summer of 1998. My friend paul told me to pick it up cause he said it was pretty damn close to sounding like old school VH. Well….

The DLR ALBUM is not the best solo album dave ever did (*I will always believe that “Eat Em And Smile” is the best)but it also has some great moments. To start off the band truly sounds great. They’re tight…no doubt. The problem was daves vocals. Being a HUGE dave fan doesnt stop me from being honest. If his vocals were stronger and he cut out the forced horse screaming….i think we would have had a gem here folks. “Relentless” was the first song that my buddy played me. From the min. I heard the opening guitar riff i didnt think VH i thought: this song is gonna kick ass! Hard rocker, but as soon as the song called for higher vocals it was cringe time. Pissed me off too cause i thought…man! That “could have been” a great comeback song!
Moving on to “Slam dunk”…sorry…should not have been the FIRST single. I could understand why…it has a VH feel but sorry…didnt dig it. I was losing faith…but i knew that dave wouldnt let me down. He must have something to offer coming from that whiskey soaked voice of his! “Little texas” is one kick ass song man. Shit…if i lived in texas i’d be driving around in my 70′ chevelle crankin that one! Great vibe…cool lyrics…and i didnt cringe as much! LOL! The chorus is great….
“Tight”! Cool cool cool fucking song. I think if im correct this song was supposed to be used for howard stern’s “private parts” movie. I LOVE it! Pure dave!
” Goin’ Places” is another cool song that i have to say truly stands out. This is one of those songs to blast on a nice drive down to the beach! I’m goin places too dave!
“Black Light” “Weekend with the babysitter” “Lose the dress” I didnt get into at all. Again…the playing is great…but something is just….missing.
“Black Sand” on the other hand shows how talented terry truly is as a guitar player. Mixed in with daves smooth vocals this song is impossible to resist…like a good bag of weed on the nightstand next to you.
It’s not a ballad. It’s just dave with his best seductive vocals. Great job on this one. Even my friends who dont like dave like this one…give it a listen.
DLR album was probley the last solo album that showed how much dave missed that VH feel but what he missed with this one was: it’s not VH. Eat em and smile was a great album cause it wasnt trying to be VH…it was trying to be anyting but! It was Dave fresh out of VH with a new band looking to KICK VH’s ass and ask no questions. And for the most part…it did! Everything sounded fresh. Even dave’s voice sounded more tough. Sometimes lighting can hit more than once…
So to anyone sho has never heard the DLR BAND I say: give it a listen. Everyone’s opinion is different so who knows what many will think. I for one think its a strong album but lacks in vocals. I’ll always love dave but again…the truth is in the pudding!

This is Dave’s most under rated solo effort! I remember when this came out how surprised I was that Dave had gone back to his pure Hard Rock roots. The first 6 tracks are the best but it is solid throughout. That year I thought for sure I would here “Slam Dunk” as the TV intro to the NBA Playoffs or Finals. DLRB was a killer effort and I wish this is the type of record Dave put out after the very successful Sam & Dave Tour in 2002! I think it would have kept his solo momentum going.
June 9th, 2009 at 9:11 am
Uh Oh, I guess Eddie will now accuse Dave of “quitting the band” since you can download his 1998 cd now.
June 9th, 2009 at 10:27 am
Wa Wa Zat? A must in any DLR collection!!!!
June 9th, 2009 at 1:49 pm
“irreplaceable voice” ???
I bought this album when it first came out and the first thing I said when I listened to it was “….what the hell happened to his voice??” It’s a complete mystery to me how he could sound so terrible 11 years ago and sound fine now. The music on the album is great, but I could never get passed the shrill vocals.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
Yeah, I love Dave, but the vocal performance is not good at all. He sounds great now, so I’m not sure what the problem was.
Eat Em and Smile was it for me. If Dave want’s to do another solo album grab Vai, Sheehan and Bissonette, then I’ll buy it.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:23 pm
Dave was probably smokin’ tons of weed when he made this album. I dig it a lot. His voice is pretty tore up but it works. He does hit some pretty insane high notes in it. Youtube David lee roth vocal range and there is a video about it. The lyrics are cool. Maybe smoke one and you can get into it too.
June 9th, 2009 at 2:28 pm
Very correct this is not Van Halen news…! like Eddie said..expect a new record in 2010? so we’ll see if he’s telling the truth or not? it’s funny how Ed bashed Sammy for his not wanting to work years ago! listen I love Van Halen period, I dig Dave and Sammy..as far as I see it they are the only two that can front VH period, in the meantime Chickenfoot’s album rocks…it’s not rockets science boy’s and girl’s it’s just plain Rock and Roll…we’ll see what VH comes up with?
June 9th, 2009 at 3:12 pm
Guitar: John William Lowery - AKA John5.
Another good reason to get this cd!
June 9th, 2009 at 4:17 pm
This was good CD, but it’s production level is not much better than a demo and Dave’s voice sounds shot.
Good songwriting on it though.
June 9th, 2009 at 4:33 pm
“Look at all the closet critics here toniiiightttt!!!”……..
June 9th, 2009 at 5:35 pm
he was in a bad phase with his voice ,
this was after the BOV1 tracks ( which rocked - but needed a lot of studio help ) .
he was still fit and entertaining , but his voice was hoarse for years - even in the 2002 he wasnt quite there.
great now
June 9th, 2009 at 7:18 pm
Ha Ha Ha!!!!!!!!!!!
What a joke. DLR Band album sucked beyond suck. I was tricked into buying it and I wouldnt even use that disc as a coaster. SLAM DUNK!!!!!! WHAT?????
June 9th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
this album is maybe his best work after Eat em and smile
i like all the solo stuff but his “diamond dave” cd was a joke.
however it came at a time when the fans wanted music so it was cool to see dave doing something unlike other people we know. the sound is raw and his voice is raw and yes the album has a very very classic van halen fell to it. i remember hearing vh3 and barfing and then while enjoyed sams marching to mars this is more of a hard rock hard record.
chickenfoot is the next van hagar album after balance in my opinion. lets hope the boys can make the follow up to 1984!
one of the top 10 albums ever! good luck. and no eat em smile is not as good as classic halen nor is van hagar and I GREW UP on van hagar- and im a big fan. people make funny statements.

Little elvis is a combat ready.

I can feel the excitement over the VH related news this week…damn, it feels good!
Played Chickenfoot and felt that something was missing (sound is great, but the soul is lacking), played DRL band and felt the same thing…guess what it was?
The Van Halen Brothers
So then I Played some of the VH 2008 shows on You Tube last night, and although Dave’s voice is pretty rough, the missing ingredient to all of this is EDDIE VAN HALEN (and Alex to be fair)
There are 1,000,000 producers in the world who can get 45 minutes out of Dave that sounds good. It’ll take some time (and some money)..not like in the old days where he could belt out a song in one take and it’s magic… (hell, Steven Tyler records each syllable separately..no joke - spending a full month on lead vocals and using a coach - which Dave does - is not unusual anymore.) If they are dedicated to perfection they will put in the time + energy.
The tour was not really a fair way to judge vocally what DLR + VH can do on record. They did 20+ year old songs in the original key for christsakes!
What 1,000,000 producers CAN’T do is create the organtic charm and appeal of Eddie Van Halen + David Lee Roth. You can’t capture this in a jar and sell it on ebay. Chickenfoot is proof of that (good playing, great guys, but little charm)
Also, put Ed against Vai and Satriani. There is no contest. Vai may be the best player, but he does not have the hooks. Satch has no hooks on the Chicknfoot record. He plays chords and some wah but does not create anything special (a shame). Can you recall one riff or solo from this record?
My only fear is the VH will try to put out a CD that sounds exactly like VH1 meets 1984 and it will be The Ruttles/ Spinal Tap. Ed has his “gold mine” of songs + riffs. Let’s hope they are not parody of his past brilliance.
June 10th, 2009 at 9:12 am
Thanks Jungleland! I’m still listening to Chickenfoot and so far I can’t help compairing it to Van Hagar. Although the band sounds great! Chad Smith’s outstanding rock drumming is a pleasant surprise for me. The best thing about Van Hagar was Eddie! Nuff said!
June 10th, 2009 at 9:08 pm
DLR Band put out a great album, in my opinion.
Oh, I love Chickenfoot, too.
Also, I like all of the VH albums (even VHIII had a few moments).
Imagine that, you can enjoy all of the music and not make it a pissing contest. Or… choose what you like, but, again… rock’n'roll is not a contest. It’s just rock’n'roll.
June 11th, 2009 at 6:27 am
C’mon everyone, this was not a good album. Slam dunk made me want to blow chunks! And this is a major concern as DLR and EVH prepare for thier response to Chickenfoot. I mean, what is left in the tank? While I don’t think Sammy, Michael, and company were thinking about DLR and EVH when they wrote and recorded Chickenfoot, I do see the opposite happening. Yes, revenge is in the air! Since now SH, DLR, and EVH have all had thier “Eat ‘em and Smile” albums, the question remains if DLR and EVH can create an “Eat ‘em and Smile II”: devoured and beaming.
June 14th, 2009 at 6:23 am
If you want to hear a great album from a musical stand-point, I’ve always thought this was an awesome disk. You have to listen to it a few times, before forming an opinion. If you want to hear original quality material with “no covers” or “radio hits” check it out.
July 11th, 2009 at 3:30 pm
What are u posers fucking kidding. DLR Band has 6 incredulous songs. So there’s a couple clunkers, so what, all my favorite jeans have holes in them. In closing Lose the Dress keep the shoes, weekend with the baby sitter and wawazzat.

After Eat’em and Smile, it´s the best album !!!!!!!!
Close to early Van Halen
