Sans Halen Tour Kicks Off
May 30, 2002 -
In Australia there's non-alcoholic beverage that's been around for years
called Clayton's. It's promoted as "the drink you have when
you're not having a drink". The word "claytons" is now part of Australian
culture and is even listed in the Macquarie Dictionary.
Clayton's
adjective Australian, NZ Colloquial serving as a substitute; imitation.
[from Clayton's, trademark of a non-alcoholic drink which was advertised as
`the drink you have when you're not having a drink']
I don't mean this in a negative way, but I can't help but think
of the Hagar/Roth tour as a "Clayton's Van Halen tour". The
tour you have when you can't have a Van Halen tour.
Eddie, Alex and Mike aren't part of the tour so it's
not really a Van Halen tour. But when you look at Van Halen
in terms of musical output, they haven't released an album or toured
in four years. Add to that the fact that the band has no singer,
no record label and their bass player is working with another
band, it could easily be deduced that "Van Halen" no longer exists
anyway.
The Hagar/Roth tour is the best thing that's happened to Van Halen
fans for a long time and it's good to see such great reviews coming
from the first show. Sammy and Dave should be commended for putting
on the show that everyone wants to see.
According to a review at mtv.com, a fan brought a cardboard cutout
of Eddie Van Halen up to the stage. Hagar smacked the head of
the cutout and said "You don't have nothin' to say? Didn't think so."
Hagar later took another shot at his former bandmate at the beginning
of Poundcake. As the band started the song, the video screen
showed a video of a black and white striped frankenstrat guitar
being attacked by a drill! Sammy's set list:
Red
Runaround
Three Lock Box
There's Only One Way to Rock
Give to Live
Top of the World
Why Can't This Be Love
5150
Poundcake
Finish What Ya Started
Eagles Fly
Little White Lies
I Can't Drive 55
Heavy Metal
Mas Tequila
Dreams
Right Now
Dave stuck to his classic Van Halen set list, complimented with Yankee Rose
from his Eat 'Em and Smile album. Many of the clips he showed on the
video screen were from his "No Holds BBQ" DVD that is yet to be released.
Dave's set list:
Hot for Teacher
Panama
And the Cradle Will Rock
Mean Street
Dance the Night Away
Runnin' With the Devil
I'm the One
You Really Got Me
Beautiful Girls
So This Is Love?
Atomic Punk
Little Dreamer
(Oh) Pretty Woman
Yankee Rose
Ice Cream Man
Everybody Wants Some
Unchained
Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love
Jump
Usually when there's a tour I invite those who go to the shows to submit
reviews and photos for publishing on this site. Unfortunately due to
time constraints I can't do that for this tour. Instead, I recommend
you venture over to vhforums.com -
there you can read and post reviews in the forum set up especially for the tour.
