Van Halen Live!

Photos by Glenn Diener 1998 - eventphoto@msn.com

July 01, 1998 - The US Tour resumes tonight in Phoenix, AZ. Expect to see an altered set list, including material from Van Halen III that has never been performed live, as well as more great classics from the Dave and Sammy eras.

At 8pm EST tonight, click on this link to go backstage with Van Halen via Real Video, thanks to Jam TV and Rolling Stone. The footage was shot backstage before the show at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago on May 16.

On June 28 I reported the following:

"We're hearing whispers about a possible nationwide (USA) radio broadcast at 8PM CST on July 5 from the Van Halen III tour! Details are sketchy at the moment, but I'll keep you updated as the information is released."

As it turns out, this broadcast will feature an old show from the Sammy era, not the current tour. Check your local station for details.

Back On The Road

July 03, 1998 - After being away from home for over a month, Van Halen resumed their US tour on Wednesday night at the Desert Sky Pavilion in Phoenix, AZ. No new songs were added to the set list, but I've heard whispers that classics like Runnin' With The Devil, Beautiful Girls, The Full Bug and Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do) will make an appearance soon, along with material from Van Halen III that has never been played live.

In single news, Dirty Water Dog will be released in Japan on July 24. Keep your eyes on the online CD stores over the next few weeks if you are interested in picking up a copy.

I'm The One

July 11, 1998 - Van Halen just walked off the stage at the Rose Garden in Portland, OR. Tonight was one of the rare nights where the band played the classic, I'm The One!

To celebrate the re-introduction of this song, here's a special treat. Thanks to Jim L, you can download the video of I'm The One. It was filmed live at the CoreStates Spectrum in Philadelphia on May 24 this year. Click on the link below to download the video to your PC. You will need an MPEG video player to watch it.

Sorry, all 1998 tour videos have been removed.

Tour Videos

July 16, 1998 - The new VHND section is up and running! Click here to go to the 1998 World Tour Videos page. The page will be updated often with the latest video footage from the current world tour. If you would like to contribute to the video section, please email Grant.

To start off the new section, I have two videos from the Philadelphia show on May 24. The first is the Dave-era classic I'm The One, a song that has only been played a handful of times since 1978. The second clip features Edward Van Halen performing 316, with a special cameo appearance by his son, Wolfgang.

Radio Broadcast Confirmed

July 29, 1998 - The Official VH site today confirmed my story from July 24 regarding the radio broadcast in early August! The Album Network will broadcast the Pittsburgh, PA show taped on July 24 on August 7 and 8. The broadcast will run for 2 hours with commercials.

The full set list from the show can be found here. Expect one or two songs to be cut to make it a 90 minute broadcast excluding commercials.

MuchMusic Special: I've received quite a lot of emails asking why the Van Halen show on MuchMusic was not broadcast on Monday night, as promised here in the Snippets section. The answer is that it was broadcast, but only in Canada. A few songs were added to the show that aired on MTV's Live From The 10 Spot special. The MuchMusic set list is below:
