Van Halen Encyclopedia Closes June 2, 1997 - Bad News: The Van Halen Encyclopedia web site has closed its doors. As most of you will know, the VHE was the most outstanding Van Halen web site on the net. If you ever wanted to know anything about Van Halen, chances are you would find it on the VHE. Good News: The reason Brad Starks (VHE Webmaster) has closed the VHE is because he will now be running the Official Van Halen Web Site! Congratulations, Brad! Mixing CommencesJune 3, 1997 - Erwin Musper has started mixing the new Van Halen album at the 5150 studio. Still no word on an album title or release date. Two more song titles have been leaked: Without You and Year To The Day (may be titled 365). 5150 Mixing Progress Report
June 6, 1997 - Erwin Musper is currently hard at work in the 5150 studio mixing the new Van Halen album. Wednesday saw the completion of the mix for Fire In The Hole. Musper decribes the song as "kind of a stadium anthem" and "very heavy". On Thursday, Erwin mixed the song titled From Afar. He's described the song as "a really bizzare song, with solos from hell!" Mixing began today on the bluesy ballad titled A Year To The Day. Special thanks to Erwin Musper for keeping the fans up-to-date via the Van Halen Mailing List.
5150 Mixing Diary June 7, 1997 - Erwin Musper is keeping fans up to date with the mixing of the new album via the Van Halen Mailing List. Here is the latest entry in Erwin's 5150 Mixing Diary...
From: Erwin Musper Good Morning... Came home last night after a whole day working on the mix of "A YEAR TO THE DAY". Still not done. But we will nail this one today. The beauty (and the hard part) of this mix is that there are several totally different sounding guitars playing together or taking over from each other. Still looking for a spot in the mix to make the bass happening (Yes, I read your comments and advice....and you're right!) I actually print out some of your support-mail and pin it to the studio walls to guide me through the next couple of weeks. This way, you guys are also part of the mixing process. The band and I have been working on this album since October last year at Eddie's studio. Since then, we finished ten songs . That might not look like a lot, but it's actually over an hour of fabulous music! Normally we mix at different studios, but this time we decided to stay at 5150. We did try mixing "FIRE IN THE HOLE" at other studios for the sake of experiment, but sonically 5150 just sounds better. We use an costum-made API board with Westlake and Quested monitors. OK, I'm going back in...any suggestions? I'll stick your comments on the wall and reach for them when the goin' gets tough. Erwin Musper.
