VH1 Poll

Jan 12, 2000 - Van Halen's Jump has come in at #95 in the VH1 list of the 100 greatest rock songs. The list was compiled from votes by 700 people in the music industry, including U2's Bono, Johnny Cash, Art Garfunkel and Curtis Mayfield.

In the online poll, visitors to the VH1 web site voted Van Halen's version of the Kinks classic You Really Got Me #6 in the list of cover songs.

VH Update

Jan 19, 2000 - Still no news on the lead singer front. As usual, there are lots of rumours and speculation, but nothing concrete has come out of the VH, DLR or Hagar camps so far this month.

Van Halen are said to be jamming again at 5150, which indicates that Eddie's hip is doing well after the surgery late last year.

Dave is promising a new DLR Band album by summer at the latest, followed by an extensive world tour that will include South America, Japan and Australia.

Gary Update

Jan 21, 2000 - Gary Cherone is currently working on a movie in Boston with independent director Tracy Glynn. As well as an acting role, Gary is also an executive producer. He will collaborate with former Extreme partner Nuno Bettencourt for a song on the soundtrack of the movie, titled The Habit.

VH Radio

Jan 28, 2000 - A few months ago the VHND launched the world's first all Van Halen radio station, but it had to close due to time constraints. Starting today, the concept lives on in the form of Wolfgang Radio - the new Van Halen radio station. Check it out!

All Polls Point To Dave

January 3, 2000 - For the past month, The Inside magazine has polled all of the people who have called their order line for whatever reason and asked them which singer they want to come back to the band - Dave or Sammy. An astounding 78% voted for Dave, leaving only 22% of the votes for Sammy.

Earlier polls conducted by the VHND web site have also favoured David Lee Roth as the preferred choice of singer by die-hard Van Halen fans.

In our poll conducted days after the announcement of Gary's departure, 46% of fans voted for Dave to return. 40% wanted Sammy, 8% wanted a 4th singer, while 6% felt the band should retire.

The VHND conducted another poll in mid November. The question was: "If Van Halen were to get Dave or Sammy back, who would you prefer?" An overwhelming 50% voted for Dave, while 40% for Sammy. 10% voted that both Dave and Sammy should return.

EVH Interview

January 19, 2000 - The online version of Guitar Magazine is featuring two Eddie Van Halen articles this month. The first is a listing of the top 100 guitar players of all time. Van Halen comes in at #6.

The other is an interview by Gary Graff. In the interview, Ed discusses Dave and Sammy, the poor critical and commercial reception of Van Halen III ("It basically stiffed" - EVH), his use of the term "LSD" to describe previous vocalists, and the importance of remaining popular.

I'm not sure how recent the interview is, but there is a discussion board linked to the article with only one post (at the time of writing), dated January 18 2000, inviting readers to discuss the interview. Relevant links are below.

Dave's Knee Problems

January 21, 2000 - David Lee Roth had an arthroscopy on his knee on January 15. He apparently injured it during one of the last shows on his recent tour. No word yet on the results of the 'scope.

Reports from insiders have the DLR Band scheduled to enter the studio in April to record their next album. Ted Templeman still hasn't been confirmed as producer, but remains the most likely choice.

Happy Birthday, Edward

January 26, 2000 - On this day in 1955, Edward Van Halen was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Many publications and web sites are still reporting his birth date as 1957, but this is incorrect.

If you wish to send Eddie a birthday message, click on this link. You will be taken to the discussion forum at vhlinks.com.

Singer update: No news is good news!

Seriously, there is no news to report. Once Van Halen decide who the next singer is going to be, they will most likely hold a press conference or issue a press release. Until that happens, treat everything you read (including this web site) or hear as an unsubstantiated rumour.

VH Rumour Mill In Overdrive

January 28, 2000 - Ever since Gary Cherone departed from Van Halen in November 1999, rumours have been circulating about the possible return of David Lee Roth and/or Sammy Hagar to the band.

Eddie got his hip replaced on November 16, while Dave finished up his DLR Band club tour during November, December and January.

I usually try to stick with the facts rather than report all the rumours. To be honest, it would be an unusual week if I didn't receive at lease one email from an alleged "insider" claiming to have the scoop about Dave or Sammy coming back to the band. When I say one email a week, I'm talking about one a week since this site started in 1996 - before Sammy departed!

Major music news magazines and web sites have now picked up on the rumour that David Lee Roth has returned to 5150. Spin magazine (the one with Fiona Apple on the cover, page 32) reports that the original Van Halen will reunite for a new album and world tour after Eddie's hip is 100%.

Allstar News (now hosted at CDNOW) yesterday reported that the same rumour was spreading across web sites, message boards and radio stations.

Launch picked up the "Dave is back" rumour this morning, but noted that nobody associated with the band or Warner Bros. Records will confirm the story.
