Review by Russ Weber - russweb@laci.net The night started kinda slow. The doors opened at 7pm. I called the club on Monday and the guy said Dave would start playing by 9pm. My wife and I got there between 7:30 and 8pm. We wanted to be there early to get a good place and have a few drinks before the show. We stood there for 4 hours waiting for the show to finally start at 11:30pm.
We met a couple of guys from Houston that had tried to make it to the Bryan, TX show that was cancelled. As soon as Dave and the band started up with "HOT FOR TEACHER" the crowd went wild. They continued on with same set list as the last show. I really have to admit Dave KICKED ASS!! I didn't expect a show as good as they put on. Dave definitely still has plenty of energy that could be used in a Van Halen tour. Eddie ought to try to make one of these concerts to see it for himself. Anyone that can, should see Dave live. You won't be disappointed!! IP: 205.230.136.94 Review by LIMECUDA - LIMECUDA@aol.com Me and my wife went to the Lake Charles show at the Limelight Club. I had bought the first 2 tickets sold back in October before the VH fallout. Needless to say I've been chomping at the bit to see DLR. I was a little disappointed in the facilities. The stage was about the size of a pickup truck bed. I was told the show would start around 10 but it actually began at 11:30. The four hours waiting were a bitch, but it was well worth the wait. Even with these distractions "The Great One" put on an amazing show. The man proved he can still rock. It was the loudest event I've ever been too. My ears are still ringing 24 hours later. The set list was about the same as the other venues. As small as the stage was, he was still able to do his patended spinning heel kicks and Dave antics. The only difference from now and 20 years ago are his receding hairline and his inability to hit the shrill high notes. I hate to say it, but the Davester is aging as are the rest of us. But I have to say to DLR's credit he is in amazing shape. I've heard of tales about Dave's demise by a couple of Halen brothers, but let me assure you the vocals and stage show are still there. If you closed your eyes you could almost picture yourself with VH 20 years ago. The only negative things that I can say are about the DLR band is the lack of spontaneity. It was definitely evident that Dave was the school bus driver and ran the show. Everything was too choreographed. I guess maybe if I hadn't been reading the reviews from others shows I wouldn't think this way, but every little catch phrase I read were used in the same segments of each show. While I must say this concert was the best I've been to, comparing the DLR band to classic Van Halen is as the cliche' goes is like comparing apples to oranges. To the mighty David Lee, you are the man and to the band you're very talented and good but you're no MIKE, Eddie, or Alex. (I capitalize Mike because this man should receive more recognition than given credit for.) If some of my criticisms are too harsh I apologize. I just keep thinking when is Eddie going to pick up the friggin' phone and rectify his misdeeds. Once again if given the opportunity to see one of these shows do it. I would love to be there one more time. Oh yeah, one more thing. Dave has this bad habit of playing with his dick too much. LOL :) P.S. I know there is a lot of talking on who the next VH frontman is going to be. Well I talked to one of the crew at the show and Dave is refusing to comment (which is odd for DLR). Anyway, they said there is a strong possibilty of a Roth/Hagar co-headlining tour. Personally, I think it's DLR. Hagar couldn't handle the pressure of following up THE MAN! IP: 205.188.193.53 Review by Michael Martinez - mikalmm@msn.com I was lucky enough for this to be the second time I've seen Dave in the last few days, I saw him in McAllen a few days ago. To be honest I was a little disappointed in the size of the crowd but it didn't seem to bother Dave in the least cuz he put on a hellava show although the PA coulda been better. The show started about 45 minutes late but as seems to be the case, once the band hits the stage they rocked hard for 90 minutes. A big plus to the show was the scantally clad honey dancing on the balcony which Dave was able to get a nice view of. Once again Dave, thanks for a great night of entertainment and look forward to seeing you front and center back with VH.... IP: 63.26.164.188 Review by Doug Davis - D51D50@aol.com Excellent show! Same setlist as previous shows. Dave did a great job of capturing the audience from the second he came out 'til the end of the show. From reading some previous reviews, I must say I was pretty pumped up and expecting a hell of a show. I was not disappointed. I've heard from other shows that Bart didn't do some of the songs justice, namely "Eruption". He must have played exceptionally well Friday night, because I didn't hear him miss a single note. This show was definitely as close to an original VH concert as any band could get. The band played tight and Dave looked in top form. I also must add that a lot of people hear about an older performer such as this playing in a bar and think "WASHED-UP"....not the case here! This was actually a better concert than most concerts I've seen in large coliseums. We were on the balcony about twenty feet from the stage. I would recommend this show to anyone who is lucky enough to have the opportunity to have the DLR Band come to their town. IP: 205.188.197.43 Review by Scott Nelson - Lordnelson65@cs.com Man 'o man alive, we're draggin' today -- still have the spirit of The Dave with me, though -- I see you holding up that cherry . . . bet you lost yours a while back, but I bet you still have the box it came in -- CAN YOU HERE ME OUT THERE?!? OooWee, she looks fine -- OK, snap out of it, the head is filled with fuzz, the ears ring, but it's time to punch it out on tjis here keyboard -- can you tell I had a good time? Dave is back, his voice is back, his GOOFINESS is back. From the moment he walked down the stairs to the much-too-small stage, I had a smile on my face and it never left except when it cracked into a laugh at his antics. Praise the good Lord above, that sucker has exorcised the weak vocal cords that have plagued him for several solo releases. Still a big nutball, still a walking hormone, still Dave. The kicks are back, the cut-up abs are back, the million watt smile never left, and of course, the verbal bullshit is back in full. Almost as much fun listening to him talk as hearing him sing all the old songs again. No opening act, and when he started, it was song after song, a tough set list (the same as listed here for previous shows), with a few moments of gratuitous verbal juggling, ever the one-man show. He seemed like a caged animal on that tiny stage at times, much too big a personality for the stage and the place. Visions of him breaking into a run to the other side of the real stage danced in my head, Dave playing to the crowd as he'd play to an arena, the microphone his weapon and phallic-symbol of choice, until pulling out a katana-sized metal baton and whirling it around like the Chinese sword in days gone by, the crowd going to another level of craziness when he did. I just hope somewhere, somehow, that little punk Eddie is hearing about this tour, hearing about the crowd reaction, hearing about Dave's returned voice, and sitting in a darkened room listening to Me Wise Magic over and over, pondering whether his next move is to go down the toilet, or give the reins back to the front man from which the band was born. Eddie is not Van Halen, nor was Eddie and Sammy, it's DAVE (notice the change in order) and Eddie, you little putz. Get over yourself and get the chemistry back, and give us all what we want (so aptly demonstrated at the Grammy's several years back). Let Dave return where he belongs, let him complete Van Halen the way Van Halen completes him, open the door to a new era of rock and roll and kill the current crop of crap. Let's get the ball rolling - DAVE TV - we know what you need! We drove an hour west into the worst backwater of the state to see the show, and it was worth it all the way. I don't really think that Dave will rejoin those twits in VH (I'd love to know where Mike stands on this issue), but after seeing the show, my hopes soar. Here's to you, Dave. Keep Rockin'!
