Review by Erik Manassy - emanassy@epix.net GREAT SHOW! This was the first time I saw him in concert and he rocked! His band was also very good! The only time I thought that they tried too hard was when the guitarist tried to play the beginning of Mean Street and Eruption. Only Eddie can do that! :) I got a little bonus before the show. This group of people behind me kept signaling to the security guard to get someone. Finally, this short skinny guy comes walking out in his shades. I didn't think much of it until someone in the crowd recognized him and came up to him. He congratulated him and went on his way. I went up to the kid and asked him who that was and he told me the drummer for Dave's band. So I went up and shook his hand and wished him good luck for tonight's show. I didn't keep track of the set list, but it seemed like they didn't play as many songs tonight. I know he only played Tobacco Road of his own songs. There was a couple of people into the music throughout the set until they started to play Unchained. Everyone got up and he rocked the place and finished strong with JUMP. Some funny things during the concert:
Great Show! IP: 205.238.200.24 Review by TJM - TJM@cyberjunkie.com "Look at all the people here tonight!" That's how it began from the mountains of eastern PA...Diamond Dave was in classic form and ready to rock! This was the first time I saw Dave in concert and I got chills from seeing my hero live onstage in front of my naked steaming eyes & ears!!! Dave wasted no time on the intro. and launched into "Hot For Teacher". Dave's band sounded very tight, and Bart Walsh had Eddie's chops down to a T. The bass player kinda looked a lot like Dave...sporting the same short haircut as Dave from the YFLM tour, and this guy had awesome backing vocals! The entire band was having a great time, and Dave was nothing but smiles & kicks! After "Hot.." and "Panama", the crowd really got pumped when the band launched into "Little Guitars". I always loved the live version of this song and it sounded awesome with Dave singing his old classic! Then another crowd-pleaser, "Dance the Night Away", cranked up and all the lame-ass people in the audience who were still doubting Dave couldnt resist and started dancing like it was 1979 all over again! I saw the VH 3 tour last summer and this version smoked as hot as that one. Dave had no qualms about using a mostly classic VH set list and why not? He wrote all those songs and sold millions of VH albums from it. His only solo-era tune was "Tobacco Road" which was perfect. I kinda wish he would have sang "Yankee Rose" or "A Little Ain't Enough" but his set was only so long. There were plenty of comedy bits from Dave's show as expected. One was when Dave grabbed a full bottle of Jack Daniels and held it to his crotch and simulated peeing on the audience. I never saw so many people wanna drink piss in my life! He passed another bottle to a guy in the front row...Dave knows how to throw a party! The intro to "So This Is Love" was hilarious. Dave says "This song is dedicated to every one of you who are in love. And if any of you are like me, this song is dedicated to those of you who wish they could find love. And if you are REALLY like me, this song is for those of you who are in love but wish they could get the fuck OUTTA love!" The crowd was hysterical. Then comes the biggest laugh of the night. During the lull in "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love", Dave says "I stood and looked down....way down....way, way down to the bottom of the down. Oh look...it's Sammy Hagar!" The crowd roared with delight! Now I know this was a cut on Sammy, but dont forget that Sammy took every opportunity on the '86 VH tour to slam Dave in every way he could. Ain't payback a bitch, Sam? :) The biggest highlight of the night was the encore of "Jump" and Dave's amazing mic stand twirling. This is the same acrobatics you see in the "Panama" & "Just Like Paradise" videos, but they don't do it justice. I don't know how Dave learned to do it, but the crowd was goin' nuts when he did! I wouldn't want to mess with Dave in a dark alley if that was a samurai sword instead of a mic stand! At at the end of Jump when the band left, Dave stood for a little while longer to soak up all the adulation from the crowd. Enthusiasm was growing through his whole set, but by the end of Jump the whole damn place was on their feet and clapping & cheering for more DAVE! There were some 20-something girls behind me who kept saying how much they wanted to jump Dave's bones after the show. I'm not a homo, but I have to admit Dave looked in excellent physical form for being a 44-yr old guy! He still has all the kicks like he was 25 again! I only wish Dave was high-kickin it onstage with the VH boys like the old times so we could really rock again! After seein the VH tour last summer and now this tour, I can honestly say without a doubt that the original VH still have that power & energy from the old days and the magic was never lost! GOD, PLEASE REUNITE CLASSIC VH!!!! The only bad parts from the show was Bart trying to do "Eruption". It was a muddy rendition and pure sacrilege! Bart was nailing a lot of the other songs but please leave Eddie's signature solo alone! Also, I thought the intro. to "Ain't Talkin.." was all crapped out. Also, Dave was wearing a silk pinstripe getup similar to Fairy Gary last year. Why wear something like this on a muggy 92 degree night? The girls behind me were screaming for Dave to put on his assless chaps...LOL! I think Dave should have worn his old red-striped bell-bottoms from '79 to get full effect. Overall, it was a super-hot show from the greatest rock showman who ever lived. I left after a few songs from Bad Company since Diamond Dave basically embarrassed them. To any true VH fans, don't miss Dave's show...it will bring back all those good classic VH memories again! I can only hope I can someday see Dave and VH reunite onstage for the most incredible tour known to man... IP: 209.166.143.122 Review by David Lee Madison - DLMFilms@Warwick.com David Lee Roth is back! Was he ever gone? Dave played a blistering one hour set to a full house at Scranton's Montage Mountain. In the afternoon hours the temperature in Scranton reached an all time high of 102, but as we all know God is a David Lee Roth fan and the minute he took the stage the temperature dropped to a wonderful 74 degrees! He looked very cool in his black pants and Charcoal Gray Shirt. His voice was in great form, and the set list was great. Dave was all in all outstanding! IP: 208.242.202.109 |
