At first he's reluctant to enter the stage. Disappointed, because only 500 people showed up tonight. But in the end, the stage animal inside DAVID LEE ROTH, the most flamboyant performer in hard rock's rich history, predominates.

Who is to prove just one thing tonight there's only one person in the word who has the right to hold the Van Halen mike. This is evidenced by the big selection of Van Halen hits that are brought to the spotlight with a hardly tarnished flair. And even more by the Jango Edwards-like stand up comedy show halfway the VH classic "Ain't talkin' bout love", that even the most respected spectators appear to know only from the Apollo 440 cover "I've been to the edge, and there I stood and looked down. I lost a lot of friends there, couple of ex-managers, some former publicist. And hey, who's that? It's Sammy Hagar! And who's that other guy sitting on his knees? It's Gary Cherone, sucking his dick!"

Although Roth finds himself backed up by a solid rhythm section, featuring drummer Ray Luzier (ex-Michael Lee Firkins), and "oldie" Todd Jensen (bass), the good old days don't revive. That's in part due to guitarist Bart Walsh's bleak copying of Eddie Van Halen's guitar parts, to the backing vocals that are just a little too choked, and surely because Roth's vocal abilities have declined over the years.

But, the show's entertainment value is absolutely high, and hey, as an attempt to reapply for the lead singer position in VH it won't miss its target. After all, Jimmy Page used a similar back route to revive Led Zeppelin...
