David Lee on shares a little story from the recording sessions for Van Halen’s debut album:
“When it was time to sing ‘Jamie’s Cryin‘,’ I had taken special good care of myself. I’d watched what I was eating, watched what I was exercising, didn’t smoke any cigarettes, nothing. Walked in, started singing, and Ted Templeman the producer said, ‘Dave, it doesn’t sound the same. It sounds like…It’s not you, it’s not real, it’s like it’s been worked on or something. Did you do something different?’
“I said, ‘Yeah, well, you know, I didn’t smoke any cigarettes and really made sure of what I had for breakfast.’
“He said, ‘Well, go outside and smoke a joint. Somebody order up a cheeseburger.’
“I went out and sat in the little basketball court area outside of Studio A, I think it was, at Sunset Sound recording on Sunset Boulevard. And I ate half a cheeseburger and drained a soda pop and smoked half a joint. Walked in, knocked out ‘Jamie’s Cryin’ in forty minutes.”
