VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Zloz knows Van Halen

From TGDaily.com:

If you grew up loving Van Halen, Motley, and many of metal and hard rock’s finest, you know the work of photographer Neil Zlozower.

Especially if you’re a Van Halen fan, because Zloz worked with them during the Roth era, and was practically considered the fifth member of the group. In 2007, Zloz put out his first book, Van Halen: A Visual History 1978-1984, and now Zloz has dedicated his best shots of Ed to his own volume, simply titled Eddie Van Halen, released October 19. (All of Zlozower’s books are published by Chronicle.)

Zloz knows Van Halen“As far as I’m concerned, Eddie changed the face of guitar playing,” Zlozower says. “There was pre-Eddie and after-Eddie. I have a lot of images of Ed that the world has never seen, and I feel it’s time to show them.”

In modern day, a photographer is lucky to get twenty minutes of a musician’s time, but Zloz enjoyed access to Van Halen that very few could get.

“One of the reason the band liked me was I was one of them,” Zlozower continues. “Besides someone I worked with, Ed was a close friend back then. We used to be on the tour bus together playing video games for hours and hours, watching movies, doing whatever friends do. We had a lot in common. We were about the same age, we liked the same things back then, partying, girls, name it.”

Part of what’s always made Zlozower a great rock photographer is he’s a true fan of the music and the artists that create it. Although Neil doesn’t play guitar, he’s lived every guitar geek dream in that he was constantly up close, watching Eddie play when he was at the top of his game. ??”Half the time, I’d be shooting Ed, and he wouldn’t even know I was there because he was so into his guitar,” Zlozower says. “Obviously, there were times it was mesmerizing. I saw things on and off stage that were amazing.”

The book not only has amazing shots of Ed playing his ass off, but it also comes with an introduction by Slash, and exclusive commentary from fellow axe gods Jimmy Page, Angus Young, Ritchie Blackmore, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John 5, and Zakk Wylde, to name a few. One great exclusive is commentary from Quincy Jones, who worked with Ed when he laid down the Beat It solo on Thriller.

As far as the band’s backstage shenanigans, Zloz says those sordid tales will indeed be revealed some day down the road. (He’s got pictures of that too, but they couldn’t be published for obvious legal reasons).

“Motley Crue’s supposed to be the bad boys of rock and roll, but I saw and did worse worse things on tour with Van Halen than I ever did with Motley. We used to do some pretty sick, crazy, wild, insane things, and I liked to be part of the insanity. It was a great time. It was pre-AIDS, and there was no shortage of girls. Those days will never be relived.”

“As far as the band’s backstage shenanigans, Zloz says those sordid tales will indeed be revealed some day down the road. (He’s got pictures of that too, but they couldn’t be published for obvious legal reasons).

Obvious legal reasons being of course, as Douglas Niedermeyer would say, they prove “a ‘Roman Toga Party’ was held from which we have received more than two dozen reports of individual acts of perversion SO profound and disgusting that decorum prohibits listing them here.”

    This book sounds amazing!!!!

  • Michael C.

VH is definitely known as one of the craziest “party” bands. Just to be there, photograph and partake in some of that craziness must have been astonishing and utter madness! I’m certainly jealous.

  • GottaLoveEddie

  • Kevin

If the VH boys did more crude things than Motley Crue, then I want to hear or read about them. I don’t – or didn’t – think any band was more notorious than the Crue. I plan to order this book very soon. Anything regarding Eddie and VH would be well worth it!

  • Diver Down

What a ride, Zloz, what a ride. Thanks for sharing the memories and the images.

For a guy who doesn’t play guitar, Zloz sure knows how to photograph a guitar player in ways that other guitar players will be interested in.

In blues and rock ‘n’ roll, a lot of guitarists start out chording with their thumb wrapped around the neck, holding it like a baseball bat. I was ignorant–I planted my thumb on the back of the neck and arched my fingers over the top of the fretboard. Why did I do it?

Because that’s how Eddie does it. I know because I saw it… in the photos of Neil Zlozower! That’s what I learned from, before anybody ever showed me the other way.

Zloz’s pics have a ton of great glimpses of Eddie’s hands, including some of his more idiosyncratic techniques. Holding the neck with the thumb on the back is how he can grab notes so far apart from each other. That is, when he isn’t tapping them with his right hand.

  • Halen High

There should be a movie about Zloz. In the spirit of ‘Almost Famous’.

  • Atomic Pete

That pic of Eddie kicks ass!
    The coolest guitarist eva!

Note to self. Things to buy:

    -Zloz Eddie book.
-New red/white high tops (for summer)
    -Vintage =VH= T
    -EVH Wolfgang Special gtr
-New VH album ( a boy can dream )

    Love this site! Thanks VHND!

  • freddiegirl

Got mine last week thanks Zloz! Love the book!

To whispergirl-Yep, I see that cute guitarist.. ;)

To anyone on the fence about this book it’s awesome, especially if Ed’s your fav member of the band. Would’ve loved commentary from either Zloz or even Ed himself but it’s a minor complaint. Put together so well too; love the Frankie patterns on the inside cover.

  • GottaLoveEddie

@ Kevin says: ..thinking VH invented the “bad boy rep”..right down to the “no brown M&M’s clause”..lol!!..God I love them though..;)..

“Motley Crue’s supposed to be the bad boys of rock and roll, but I saw and did worse worse things on tour with Van Halen than I ever did with Motley.”

Maybe the new book should be called “The Dirtier”!

    @ Kevin

Check out Ozzy! Crue will pale in comparison. He even came to SA tx and pissed on our most historical landmark.

I have yet to purchase the book. I am a huge EVH fan. I might take freddiegirls’ advice and get it! I’ve been wanting those EVH sneakers as well…whadda ya think?

  • whispergirl

    Freddiegirl says:

    “To whispergirl-Yep, I see that cute guitarist…”

Where, where, where? Oh, I see, “a little to the right” (well facing the stage anyway). LOVED your post. We have a theme going.

I’m not sure where to put this, but on the other book thread (why are there two anyway), you asked if any of the reg’s have ordered on.

I ordered two. One for me; one for my 13-year old nephew who I have convinced Ed is god. The 13-year old likes older Ed better because he thinks 80s hair is “girly”. So I’m not sure what he will think of these pics.

I don’t have them yet because I confused VHND with the order of two. They emailed me to clarify, so I assume it will come soon, and I will be sure to give you a review — a review with a girl slant because we need that. I will be sure to cover hair, clothes and the general hotness of our master, Ed.

So, really, where should we be commenting on the Ed book.

P.S.: party still going on the 400+ thread!!!!

  • freddiegirl

whispergirl-Yep he’s there to the right; you just have to tear your eyes from that hot singer I know you like.. ;)

Can’t wait to hear your review; I did mine on the first book thread and yes; still love the party on the 400 thread!

Halen High-I agree, an “Almost Famous” type movie about Zloz would be awesome.

  • whispergirl

    @Freddiegirl:

Oh now girl, don’t get me going on that “singer”. I have to work today. LOL.

Actually in my concert experience, I always stood to the right and spent my time looking about half straight and half left.

Someone above talked about thumb placement evident in the phots(I read that post a lot trying to understand); I loved to watch Edward’s hands when he played. I did not understand it, yet it was completely mesmerizing. I’m a visual learner (that’s how I learned dance — by following) so I’m sure I could just sit and watch Ed play for hours.

As for that cute singer, he too was simply amazing to watch not only because he was cute but because he was amazing. How was there so much amazing in this band. Greatest ever.

  • Juan Bodley

This book is GREAT for the Van Halen, especially the EDWARD VAN HALEN fan. The axes, the insight, Ed, it’s FANTASTIC. My book has a special place in the collection. Zloz has a great eye for the exceptional photo. Spend the cash for this one friends.

  • =VH=OZ MAN

    AWESOME!!!!

  • Halen High

    freddiegirl says:
“Halen High-I agree, an “Almost Famous” type movie about Zloz would be awesome.”

Yeah – he may not have the profile of Cameron Crowe, but his life experiences working with these famous bands sounds to me like it’s a got a good script in it – perhaps for an indie film-maker. The way he started out with a young VH, the late 70s – I think it has the making of a movie :)

I just thought of the perfect director…David Lee Roth!

  • http://www.facebook.com/guitaristjohnnybeane johnny beane

My friend just got the book from VH store and showed it to me tonight.

    Amazing photos!
    Very clean looking.

So many never b4 seen photos.

There are bands and people alike who brag about partying and all sorts of debauchery and then there are bands and people who just live it and the people around them get to tell the story. How many countless stories are there about Van Halen that is the stuff of legend ? Stories that are not contrived by bands who like to brag about themselves or go out of there way to make it known, or make there own brand of Tequila or whatever, so they can give off some sort of larger than life persona of something they are not. Van Halen is the real deal, honest to goodness, what you see is what you get. Oh yeah and they rock ! Your a blessed man, Zloz.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

Well, since VHND doesnt have a Happy Halloween Thread, we’s still partying under the thread chickenfoot unveils new video! Stop by!!! Halloween is here!!!!! :) :)

  • SCAR

Sordid details baby, that’s what we want to read about!!!!!

  • Eddie Van Wailin’

“Redskins fans arguing about John Beck and Rex Grossman is like Van Halen fans arguing about Mitch Malloy and Gary Cherone.” – Bill Simmons

  • JasonBourne

Got my copy today . Excellent job Zloz. I was pumped to see that Richie Blackmore was one of the first reflections. Also everbody misses that he had a HUGE influence on Ed, whether he knows it or not. How you may ask ? Well, aside from Hendrix, Blackmore was the first king of the flamboyant rock use of the whammy bar with stage moves and cool looks to boot. Was bummed to see nothing from the Schenkers, Yngwie, and many more great guitar players whom I’m sure all praise him. Also some rare special pictures of Ed from the Hagar era wouldn’t have hurt either. None the less, Well Done.

  • Mr. Mike

cool book…just received mine. Wonder why no comments from DLR?

  • Reddman

Just got my copy of ”THE BOOK”. Love it. It’s awesome and takes me back to a place where everything rock n roll back in the day was Van Halen. Thanks NZ for a great book and a nice tribute to the ”LORD OF THE STIRNGS”. Just one thing…why didnt this book print in the USA?

    God bless EVH!!!

  • whispergirl

Following up on my pre-review directed to my gal-pal, Freddiegirl. Here’s my real review.

First, before I got my EVH NZ book, here’s what I said: I loved to watch Edward’s hands when he played. I did not understand it, yet it was completely mesmerizing.

In the forward by NZ, NZ says as he talked about doing less photography for the 1984 tour because the stage was too big to get good accesss. Here’s what he says, including exlamation points and emphasis, all Zloz’:

“it was very hard to photograph that tour. So what did I do for a nice portion of the set??? WATCH ED PLAY GUITAR!!! … I was only about five feet away from him and would stare at his fingers while he was playing!! He would mesmerize me every night!! What a GREAT memory!!!”

I got my book last night, 11/3/11. I read lots of comments by the famous players, and that one hit me so hard. Neil Zloz used almost the same words as I did about my own memory. Wow; I was actually lucky enough, three times, to be that close — five feet (or whatever the 81 and 82 barrier walls were from the stage) to see at that least that part of what Zloz saw. And I too found Ed’s fingers (I saw it as his hands) to be mesmerizing. Mesmerizing. Yes, that is the exact word. I said it before, I say it again. And so does Zloz — a man who saw this a lot more than 3 times. So mesmerizing, I love this stuff 29 years later.

As for the reviews in the book, it shows Ed’s gift. The commentators — mostly guitar players, also see him as a genious. I liked the non-guitar player commentary too. The commentary of Mr. Guzzarri (owner of the Whisky) stating that Ed called him “Mister” Guzzarri was touching. The commentary from the amp-maker, Jose Arredondo, is notable because it shows how much work went into making a sound that we would “feel inside”. Great comment.

My comment on the photos/book: the photos are beautiful, the commentary is well-placed and the book is well-edited. it is very nice and will look good displayed.

Okay, what makes me “me”: the commentary on the “look”. There are many photos that stand out and look like the concerts: the overalls, the fluffy hair, the smile. So cute. I like the photo that takes up two pages and looks purple; it is two pages after the black and yellow guitar. (There are no page numbers). That picture captures what I mean by watching Ed’s hands. The photo has motion; it has emotion.

I like the picture of Ed four turns of the page later standing in really hideous shorts because we just don’t look good all the time.

Mostly, though I like the back-stage photo (about mid-way into the book) where Ed has some WD-40 substance and he is fixing his guitar. He looks different; like we are truly seeing the man himself.

Again, because I’m me, I like the occaisional shot with Dave in it. Especially the ones in the dressing room. I love that calmness in Dave’s face. He appears different there. So does Ed. I’m not sure, even in a concert, we could really see the real Ed and certainly not the real Dave. We see the performers. How lucky is one who sees the quiet times?

This makes me want the other book — the VH book, too.
