Book details:

The definitive visual history of early Eddie Van Halen! This hardcover photo book is jam packed with classic and never before published photos! A MUST HAVE for Van Halen fans and guitarists alike!

One of the most revolutionary and influential players ever to pick up a guitar, Eddie Van Halen’s music and technique continue to energize legions of fans and guitarists around the world. This book of photographs and text focuses on the innovative early years of the band Van Halen, when Eddie burst on the scene and changed the face of electric guitar-playing and melodic hard rock. Nearly 200 images of Eddie in action–both classic and never before seen–are complemented by text and testimony from famous guitarists, music writers, and many others. Also featuring a foreword by guitar legend Slash, this is the definitive visual history of classic Eddie Van Halen.

Famous guitarists who contributed text: Angus Young, Jimmy Page, Joe Perry, Les Paul, Stave Vai, Joe Satriani, Nuno Bettencourt, Ritchie Blackmore, Gilby Clarke, Phil Collen, Billy Gibbons, Peter Frampton, Paul Gilbert, Allan Holdsworth, Scott Ian, Tony Iommi, Steve Lukather, Mick Mars, Ronnie Montrose, Gary Moore, Tom Morello, Dave Navarro, Rick Nielsen, Ted Nugent, Paul Stanley, Nancy Wilson, Zakk Wylde, Dweezil Zappa, and many others.

Van Halen insiders who contributed text: Eddie Anderson (director of security 1980-84), Pete Angelus (creative consultant, production/lighting designer), Marshall Berle (personal manager 1977-78), Bill Gazzarri (owner: Gazzarri’s nighclub), Michael Karlin (Van Halen business manager, 1978-present), Jas Obrecht (editor: Guitar Player magazine), Patrick Whitley (production manager 1978-84) and Michael Anthony.

Neil Zlozower’s rock photography spans more than 40 years and includes work with The Rolling Stones, Ted Nugent, Aerosmith, AC/DC, Motorhead, Tom Waits, Slipknot, and many others. From 1978 to 1984, Zlozower was the “fifth member of Van Halen,” touring with and capturing images of the band during the David Lee Roth era.

Hardcover, 176 pages, 8.5 x 11 inches, Nearly 200 color and b/w photographs.

t42design yet again collaborated with Neil Zlozower on this great book. The Los Angeles based design firm not only art directed and designed the book but also edited and selected most of the photos in collaboration with Matt Bruck and Zloz. The entire process took about one year. An interesting side note: While presenting the final layouts to Eddie, he in fact made Tom Jermann (the firm’s art director) only switch out one single photo. Apparently, the collaboration was very smooth. t42design was also responsible for the Van Halen book a few years ago amongst many others.

    “Halen High-Thanks so much…I’m glad to have another gal on board too…and I also need to start posting on Roth Army as well! When I do, look out for me, k?”

    You bet :)

  • freddiegirl

    Dirty Duck and Jeff Adams-It sure was! One of the best memories of have of my pops too; being there at the US festival with him.. :)

    Atomic Pete-No name yet; we toyed with “10 Second Bitch” as we were going to be an all girl Motley Crue tribute band (10 Seconds to Love). Now we’re doing other 80s glam stuff and working on some originals. I’ll let you know when we decide on a name! Thanks for asking!

    Phillster-Gladly I’ll take a refill.. ;)

    Halen High-Hugs and thanks.. :D

    Good god, 101 comments about a eddie van halen book………..

    @Halen High:

    Thanks for saying you will look out for me if I decide — ever– to post on Roth Army. Yes, they need girls over there. It’s a bit much. Perhaps I will say something one day, but I’m still thinking I’m a bit girly for those guys. They, out and out, get after it. Yes, your words “take no prisoners” is accurate. I would have my same name though, so even my name in the “tough-world” of Roth Army would be funny. I still don’t know what Melidicrock is or what it does. Could you tell me?

    @Dirty Duck and Jeff Adams:

    The US Festival tour was mostly the same as the 1982 Diver Down tour, except with different costumes. For some reason, I remember that 1982 tour EXACTLY. It’s like time stopped for a bit for me that day. (A story for another day and place.) There is a bootleg of the 1982 performance that is called Largo. It, like the US Festival performance, starts with Romeo Delight, and in that, Dave also “forgets the words”. He did the same thing the night I saw them (Austin, November 1982). Somehow, that “forgetting the words” was “planned”. There was one difference in the 1982 shows and 1983 US Festival as far as Dave’s comments, and that is in Everybody Wants Some. At the show I saw which is very similar to the Largo bootleg on this, Dave talked about, (well I’m going to P.G. this a bit), taking a girl to his room, and as he says, “she reached over and grabbed me by my….” At first, he pauses, then says hand (with his own hand way down there) and then he says, Okay she grabbed me by my…. (See P.G.) I actually remember that. It was RIGHT in front of me if you know what I mean. My 20-year old eyes were never quite the same. At the US Festival, he does not do that routine. As for Romeo Delight, I wonder it it was hard to sing in that spot so he did the “forget the words” thing.

    @Freddiegirl: thanks for letting me into your “only girl” world. But boys, I am not in a band, so she really does have me beat. Love her!!!

    Oh, girl point though: I took my skating tests today, and passed. The other woman (considered adult by the way) was 25, so I’m surprised I passed against that as a standard. I’m so sore. I practiced all week, and was up at 5:00 a.m. today to do one more run through before my mid-day tests. I skated almost everyday this week, and had to do this test with very sore quads.

    It really gives me new respect for Dave, ya’ll. We expect this stuff from him — athletic-abilty, jumps, kicks, etc., and I have to tell you, it is crazy hard to do this post-40. There was nothing I could not do in my youth, and now I’m fighting for these tests, and hurting everything. (The kids like it though, and all the moms came up to me and said there “wow”, I cannot believe you can do this….) What is possessing me to do this I do not know.

    @whoever said we will have 1000 comments when the single comes out. Easy, we will have 1000 comments just from the regulars, so it could be more than 1000. VHND will have to keep that up for days.

    On why Dave is silent. Why not. We are doing all the talking for him. Perhaps he is just content to read our comments.

    That’s awesome! After CVH and Ozzy, Motley is one of
    my faves. Met Tommy last year after he picked my guitar
    solo to be on his last album.
    If I ever met Ed I’d probably just stand there and stare
    like an idiot.Jimmy Page too.

    whispergirl – Melodicrock is a music news website, mostly covering classic rock bands/artists from the 70s and 80s who are still in circulation, particularly the more mainstream, radio-friendly acts. I think Andrew runs the site on his own. He is a big Van Halen fan and over the years he has broken some stories on the band, surprising considering the geography. However, as he is a Sammy/Van Hagar fan with much less interest in CVH or Roth-VH, I’ve noticed since the demise of Van Hagar that Melodicrock’s VH stories have been less reliable and less positive.

    Same here and probably in that order.

    I’m a fan of old school CRUE myself!
    Was listening to “knock em’ dead kid” last night…man that song kicks ass! Anything from “Too fast for love” to “Shout at the devil” is great stuff. Saw them live a couple times too…great shows! Wasnt feeling “Saints of los angeles” at all. Thought it sucked. EXTREMELY dissapointed….
    Anyone else think that album was a waste?

  • freddiegirl

    Atomic Pete and Halen High-Thanks! I’m a big Ozzy fan as well although I favor the RR years. Love those first two Motley albums…and Dr. Feelgood as well. I’ve mentioned this many times but I’ve been fortunate enough to meet Eddie twice in my life and both times he was just a sweetheart. First time I did stare…and then giggled like a teenager.. :)

    whispergirl-so glad to have you! We need more rocker girls!

    Back on topic; my review of the book for what it’s worth.. ;) Loved it although some of the comments seemed like rehashes from the first book, VH: A Visual History. The EVH book is beautifully put together however and IMO even cooler than the first. Love the design with the two Frankie patterns on the inside covers. Most of the comments inside are cool although there’s a few where guys talk about bowling with Ed and other nonsense. Although it’s cool to hear that Ed’s a ‘normal’ human being I like reading about his influence on the other musicians instead. And..I would’ve loved commentary from both Ed and Zloz themselves about the pictures; like their impressions or where the pics where taken and so on. The Michael Anthony comment was just as kind as you’d expect and Lita Ford’s comments are particularly funny. Jas Obrecht’s story is repeated here about playing b-ball with Ed and then interviewing him after being rebuffed by Pat Travers. I’ve read it before but it’s nice to have it included. Other highlights are Nuno Bettencourt’s story and the comments of Quincy Jones about the Jackson “Beat It” solo. Pictures are of course awesome and most are variations of stuff we’ve already seen but they’re all still cool. And of course the pics of young Ed are just the best from my girlie POV! Rock on VH-peeps!

  • jeff adams

    freddiegirl, whenever I post about the US FEST I think of you and your dad, and your dad taking you to that show as a youngster. What a cool dad, and if I remember right he wanted to leave before VH came on and you made him stay. Atta girl! The Crue, Judas, and the Scorps were bad ass that day and then the highlight of the day/evening was the Mighty Van Halen. I don’t think I could hang at a festival like that today, but great memories.

  • freddiegirl

    jeff adams-My pops was the best, for sure! I repaid him years later by taking him to see his favorite band, Metallica. I think about him every day. Yeah, I cried and threw a tantrum to stay…full on tears! I vividly remember a Spicoli type looking at my pops and saying, “Hey, let the kid stay an watch Van Halen!” Hilarious! Priest were a lot of fun and the Scorps were awesome. If I’m honest they sounded the best that day and their show was the tightest. But VH is VH.. ;) You understand.. Funny thing about the Crue; Shout at the Devil hadn’t been released yet if memory serves so the Crue were unknown outside of the LA area at that time. I believe Shout was released late summer early fall that year.

    Anyone else have thoughts on the new EVH book? I’d love to hear ‘em!

    @Freddiegirl:

    I confused poor Jeff at VHND by ordering two (one for me and one for my 13-year old nephew who I have convinced Ed is God). He emailed me to ask if I really meant to order two. I said yes, so mine is coming, and I will give you a report.

    Hang tight.
