Mike is the fucking man!
There I was, listening to this great band just knocking it down.
Who could it be? The Mighty Van Halen!
Than I woke up.
It remains a dream of mine.
Nice to hear from one of the members of this band.
The Nation waits
Eddie was actually wrong about one thing, Michael Anthony was NOT the orignal bassist for VH, MARK STONE was!
I think he meant now that Wolfgang is in Van Halen. And someone correct me if I’m wrong, but Mark Stone wasn’t in “Van Halen” at a time when the brothers used that name. Perhaps my memory is off, but they were probably playing under the Mammoth moniker at that time, or POSSIBLY even Rat Salade. But I don’t believe Van Halen.
You are correct my man!
Stone was part of the band when they were known as mammoth.
“Mike” on the other hand was in the band when they were known as VH. Hence, why ed said that mike was the “orginal” bassist for the group.
Give the man a prize! 🙂
Strung Out and Dirty Duck,
If you read the book Everybody want’s some “The Van Halen Saga” it sounds as if Mark Stone was in the band when they changed their name to Van Halen. But it doesn’t matter because when they hit it big we knew Mike and the rest is HISTORY!!!!!
I love how Eddie Trunk just went strait for all the questions the fans would ask Mike. I wonder if the original VH will ever get back together.
Mark Stone was in the band under the name Van Halen, I believe he came up with the VH logo
VH saga on bookshelf behind Mike’s head.
Topjimmy; stranger things have happened. I never thought VH would regroup with Dave and yet they did so….you never know… 🙂
I agree with Kip… I boycotted the “reunion” tour because Mike wasn’t in the band. Sacrilege!
Ahh Mark Stone. Every time I see that name I think of Pete Best.
Proof that Mark Stone was with the band under the name “Van Halen”: if you watch one of the VH documentaries (I forget which), you learn that Mark Stone designed the original Van Halen logo that was on the unused first cover for VH1. He shows you his original, hand-drawn cardboard sign.
Oops, correction — it wasn’t the logo from the unused VH1 artwork, it was an earlier one.
Re: Mark Stone. Michael Anthony was the bassist on the first album, hence “the first” Van Halen bassist.
Thanks for posting the show VHND.
VHOldtimer- I have that documentary. That is the saddest part. That poor guy probably looks at that cool logo he drew about 50 times a day. I always though that would be a great shirt to re-issue, the one with that logo going down the left side white on black. Guess that ain’t happenin’. He actually played a mean bass on the Cherokee demo. “Believe Me” “Simple Rhyme” & “Take Your Whiskey Home”. Hats off.
Regardless of who the “founding” bassist really was, MA will always be the heart and soul of classic Van Halen. His vocal pitch did wonders for the band’s soaring harmonies – I always thought Eddie had a cool background voice as well, for the record – but one can’t overlook his bass playing. People who say Anthony is a second-rate bass player are bullshit, because he holds down the fort and keeps good time with Alex; any individual who can keep up with The King of Ten Fingers and Six Strings has my vote! But even besides that, damn it if Mike ain’t just a generous dude. Chickenfoot was a slightly tepid affair IMO, but I see great things ahead for that band and I’m so glad Mikey isn’t sitting around no more!
The blond chick with the big ya-ya’s nails it perfectly at the end — “It doesn’t matter what you do, Dave is better than Sammy”
Couldn’t have said it better myself 😉
What a dumb argument??? M.ANTHONY is the original full stop ,
How many MARK STONE songs do you know???????
Hey! I aint perfect!
Only on the weekends! 😉
Can’t believe no one has posted this yet!
Mike is a class act!!
OK, I’m all done now
Cool interview. Thx VHND and Eddie Trunk.
Apples vs. Oranges.- No one wins
Don’t get me wrong I love M.A. but there is NO way I would not see them just b/c he wasn’t with them! Give me a break, I will take them any way I can get them. Dave solo, Sammy lead etc…they are just that good. And if you have the love for VH like I do you can’t just say I’m not going because this or that. I have seen them all different ways, of course Eddie, Dave, Alex and Michael would be (are) the best (to me) but it isn’t really up to me….is it?! Cheers to 2011!
Not sure why everyone else doesn’t see it the same.
I wouldn’t waste my money to see the current line up of VH, not because Mike isn’t there, but because Wolfie IS.
It just doesn’t work for me. Obviously it would be better if Mike was still in the band, however at the very least he should have been replaced properly.
DiamondDean: i don`t know any Mark Stone songs,
But I Also don`t know any original Michael Anthony songs..
If he`s written an entire song on his own,I haven`t heard it.
Maybe Mikey`s not a song writer,
just a bass player.
The interview is great but do we have to sit though 4 commercials in the middle of the stupid thing?
One is plenty.
For me personally Van Halen Is and always will be Dave, Mike, Alex, Eddie. And for there ever to be a fully reunited VH and the only way i’b be able to go to my grave in peace is if those four fellas got together in to the studio and wrote and recorded and toured a whole brand new album.
Don’t get me wrong. I think wolfgang is fine but he is not Mike you know. It is a different sound, a different chemistry.
With those original 4 Thats how they became VH and thats how I will consider it VH.
Now I like The Sammy era stuff just as much as the Dave era but its different you know. Like apples and oranges. Both still sweet. But it still won’t “Sound” like VH unless those original 4 get back together and make a hole new album.
I still believe there full potential was not heard when the band changed after the 1984 album. I believe the music was going to get even better, and i’m talking legendary status. Stuff generations past us would pick up and listen to as if it were new. But I think it was gone before its time. Though as the original 4 are still alive and still able to play. At least they could give us a glimpse of what might/could have been. And hell if the original 4 got back together and the magic was still there it would be huge.
The opening is there too. So much bad rock music being produced now a days. The window is open and people want to hear some more real great rock music. Not this man-gina crap by bands like Nickelback.
Hopefully one day, The stars will align and those four guys will get back together and write a new album and take there time putting it together too. The awesomeness that was the original first 6 VH albums could still be there but they themselves and the world may never know unless the do it.
