Keeping with his theme of classic rock walk in music, UFC legend Randy Couture went with another iconic act to signal his arrival into the octagon in Boston’s TD Garden.

The frenetic pace of the guitar heavy intro to Van Halen’s “Mean Street” matched the speed of Couture’s flurry of punches that neutralized boxer James Toney.

The echoing refrain of “Come on down to Mean Street” seemed a somewhat taunting invitation from the MMA veteran to the seasoned boxer.

Perfect intro music as far as I’m concerned.

Friday Night at the KC Chiefs Pre Season Home Opener, they played Everybody Wants Some AS THE STARTERS were being introduced! Hopefully every home game will start with that tune. They have always played sound bites of VH throughout the game but never as the intro!!!!!!! Renovated stadium with that kick ass intro made your arm hair stand up.

  • Roth-A-Holic

A true bad ass like Randy Couture proves he has equally good taste in the ULTIMATE BAD ASSES IN MUSIC — THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN !!!

“Mean Streets” is a great choice……I would have picked “Unchained” myself but I’m not gonna be entering an MMA octagon anytime soon.

  • Panama Red

Randy Couture is a legend, still a great competitor at 47 years old. Un-friggin-believable. I thought it was unbelievable that he was still competing 5 years ago at his age and still fighting at that level.
“The Natural” is a marvel and a one-of-a kind Bad Ass! And he has great taste in music too! “Mean Street” is probably my all time favorite VH song, as hard as it is to pick a favorite VH song.
“Crossing Over” is probably my favorite Sammy-era VH song.
I think if I would’ve made it into the UFC I would come out to Pantera songs. Songs like Walk, Fucking Hostile, The Badge, Rise, Domination, Becoming, A New Level, Hellbound, Immortally Insane, Revolution is My Name and some others by the “Cowboys From Hell” would be perfect walk out/entrance music.
I thought it was really cool that Randy came out to “Mean Street.” Even Joe Rogan said something like – Randy always comes out to the coolest songs.
I’ve been following the UFC since its inception and I’ve been following Randy Couture’s fighting career for a long time as well. He is almost superhuman in his abilities and BadAssness. He really IS Captain America.
The Couture vs. Toney fight was a horrible embarrassment for Toney like most everyone knew it would be. It was a ridiculously one-sided fight. I almost can’t believe that fight even happened. I WAS excited to see Toney get humiliated by Randy though. Randy Couture is a great representative of MMA. He’s Intelligent, he’s got class, and he’s amazingly talented. I don’t follow boxing anymore but James Toney does have a very impressive boxing record. But now he just seems to be a good representative of head trauma. Have you heard that guy talk? They had to have subtitles. Geez. And when he does speak it’s on the level of a 5th grader with the stupid insults and the short temper and everything. I think he frustrates himself trying to piece words together to form sentences.
But anyway, I think more than anything Dana White allowed this fight just to shut up all of the boxers and boxing fans who talk so much crap about the UFC….and James Toney just wanted a paycheck. He didn’t take this seriously unless he really is delusional enough to think he could walk in the octagon in poor physical shape and have only his boxing skills to utilize against a martial artist of Couture’s caliber and be able to come out the victor!?!
Being over weight and only having 8 or 9 months of martial arts training for your first fight against a champ like Randy is ridiculous.

I also really REALLY enjoyed Joe Lauzon beating the crap out of Gabe Ruediger in the prelims. That was an equally humiliating loss for that douchebag. Greatness! Every single fight last night went my way, which hardly ever happens. Frankie Edgar BROKE B.J. Penn. Amazing, that little dude kicks ass!
Sorry for the rambling, I don’t think I’ve fully recovered from last night…long night, my head is still cloudy. I think that’s how it always is though.

Hopefully with the new album they’ll be playing those songs. Nothing gets the crowd and the athletes going like a little music from the worlds greatest band. PERIOD!!

  • Tater Salad

I love that song! One of the best intros ever. I think Runnin With The Devil is the best though. From the moment you hear that song you know it’s gonna kick butt!

  • Remember the Prom Queen

    Truly homoerotic stuff. Thanks!

  • Joe

We are really celebrating this kind of stuff? Intros…bout time VH got into the act…as much as i love Ozzy, I am sick and tired of Crazy Train and I dont want the same for the VH songs…

  • EvH5150

I agree with Joe. I love Ozzy, but Crazy Train is run to the ground. I also love Guns N Roses but how many times can u hear Welcome to the Jungle? It is about time for Van Halen songs to b played at sporting events.

Its is happening my source is very reliable!

  • phillster

I`d like to see panama red in the octogon with a pen&paper
and literally write his opponent to death ala monty python.

  • Panama Red

Holy Crap phillster, I LITERALLY Laughed out loud!
I can laugh at myself and THAT was funny!

  • phillster

    Your a good dude panama.

Agree with you 100%, except about Toneys speech being the result of head trauma. He has always talked like that. So I guess when his speech goes clear we will know he has taken one too many.

  • Jeff

Anythingleft: Roth dragged the guy off stage ’cause he knew when to make his exit. He wasn’t worried about some schmo getting more applause. He wanted to leave them wanting more. He knew how to entertain.

Roth-a-holic: I have no idea why you woulda thought a VH show was a sausage-fest. Kinda funny how are perceptions can be, especially as a kid. That guy would flirt (and prolly get) any girl. It wouldn’t surprise me if they had a thing, but he never did publicize his sex-capades…that I can remember anyway.

I love the tone when EVH starts Ain’t Talkin. These guys were on top of the world, and I think they could make a go of it again if they could just get their act together.

MMA is nothing more than the “HOME OF THE CHOKEHOLD” James Toney isn’t even a good Boxer and hasn’t been for some time. MMA is a different style than Boxing and the two should not be mixed. There is a reason MMA fighters have multiple losses AND that reason is simple, one slip on the mat or one sweaty arm slip and your in an arm bar or choke hold. GIVE me a BREAK this doesn’t prove dominance on any level, it proves anyone can win rolling on the floor like a monkey. Boxing brought itself down because of selfish fighters only looking for money and eventually, and you can mark my words MMA will be like that too. Great champions don’t last only a year or two, they last a lifetime. if you like martial arts great, send your kids to karate or whatever, but if you want to go toe to toe and find out who the better man permanently is, send your kid to the boxing ring. Butter Bean took out most of your MMA dudes LMAO>….. the Broom sweeps~!

  • Panama Red

@ Broom – I think you missed a few spots when you were sweeping.
First of all, Toney has had over 40 KO’s and held several weight division championship titles including IBA and NABO heavyweight titles. The problem was he didn’t take this seriously, didn’t get in shape, and didn’t train nearly long enough. You are gonna need years of martial arts training before you are even close to being ready to take on someone like Randy Couture. It’s pretty obvious he did it only for the check, either that or his perception is completely delusional about the reality of MMA fighting at this level.
Second, choke submissions and armbars are just two way to end a MMA fight. There are many submissions and other ways a skilled MMA fighter has at his/her disposal to end a fight, including strikes and kicks.
If you’re a pugilist or strictly a fan of boxing then that’s cool. I just think you aren’t letting yourself see both sides of the coin when it comes to boxing and MMA. The skills of a truly great boxer should always be respected but I think you’re opinions are biased and one-sided, instead of fair and objective to both sports.

You say : “There is a reason MMA fighters have multiple losses AND that reason is simple, one slip on the mat or one sweaty arm slip and your in an arm bar or choke hold. GIVE me a BREAK this doesn’t prove dominance on any level, it proves anyone can win rolling on the floor like a monkey.”

True battle IS losing after making only one mistake. If you study hand-to-hand combat, bushido/kendo or any form of martial arts, or just warfare in general or any one of the MANY different warriors throughout the history and different parts of the world, a lot of the time it’s about that one moment. That one moment during battle when you find a good opening to use your skill and strengths to capitalize on your opponents weakness or mistake during battle, to end the fight.
Street fights, hand-to hand combat between experienced fighters, and real battles between two warriors don’t go 12 rounds. People can’t take that many punches to the head unless they are wearing boxing gloves. I’m not trying to dis boxing, I’m just saying MMA fights are much more like an actual battle between warriors than a boxing match is. That’s one reason it’s so much more exciting and entertaining for so many people.
I love watching old boxing matches. I’m talking about real old ones, like from the 60′s and 70′s and some 80′s. But my interest in boxing has waned over the years because of the excitement of MMA. Most current boxing matches now seem boring to me compared to most MMA fights in the UFC.

I’m not exactly sure what you mean when you say :
“Great champions don’t last only a year or two, they last a lifetime”
The Victors of Championship fights always have that title in the record books and keep their belt, but when someone wins a title fight, they are the Champion title holder of that division until they are defeated in a fight, whether it’s boxing or MMA. Some fighters may be regarded as “champions” if they are a veteran fighter who has won many big fights or after or after retiring or a Hall of Fame Induction. Like MMA fighter example Randy Couture for example who has won Championship Titles multiple times in different weight classes, retired, come out of retirement to reclaim the Heavyweight Championship again, inducted into the Hall of Fame and continues to fight and win professional fights at 47 years old.
Likewise with boxing legends like Jack Dempsey, Joe Louis, Joe Frazier and Rocky Marciano. They are Great Champions.
But you have to remember mainstream MMA organizations like the UFC haven’t been around very long, not compared to boxing organizations anyway. But Randy WILL be a Champion — his whole lifetime, as you say.

And you say :”Butter Bean took out most of your MMA dudes”
What!??! I like Butterbean for his freakish nature and for nostalgic reasons but…WHHHAAA??!!
Butterbean had an impressively freakish way about him that I liked. He was entertaining but he was really a 400 lb. ToughMan Contest type dude. Very likable and I rooted for him but c’mon he wouldn’t stand any more of a chance against a guy like Randy any more than Toney did.

My viewpoint may be slightly biased to because I got into martial arts at a young age instead of boxing. But I try to see both sports for what they are, and really comparing the two is kind of like comparing apples and oranges, or Sammy Hagar and David Lee Roth, Tequila and Jack Daniels (I lifted that last comparison from Dirty Duck)
They should all be respected, liked, and understood for what they are.
One of the many things I love about Martial arts is that throughout it’s history has been a constant changing, growing, and evolving life of different/new methods/techniques and philosophy. There are so many different styles of martial arts.
Boxing for the most part has gone unchanged, and that’s honestly kind of cool in a way. I respect the fact that it’s steeped in tradition and it has been a part of generations and sports history.
But it’s not up-to-date as far as being the most effective fighting method. And that’s what martial arts is about. It’s about being the most effective opponent in any given battle and having a big toolbox of skills and variety of technique to utilize in battle to end the fight as quickly and effectively as possible with taking the least amount of damage.
So really we’re talking about two different monsters here. They are both fighting methods but one is set in tradition and basically focused one only one method of fighting, whereas the other can/does encompass all methods and styles of fighting. So it makes it kind of a futile argument to compare the two. It’s like what Randy Couture said, boxing/striking is only one aspect of fighting.
But if you are only into striking with punches, than boxing may be your sport. Striking is a great part of MMA too. That’s why I have always respected and followed Chuck Liddell’s career so much because he always had a very well rounded ability to fight using different technique but he always preferred to stand toe-to-toe and bang it out with his opponent, and I loved that.
Boxing will always be around, it’s surrounded in such great history, with legendary tremendous athletes, nostalgia, passion, and it’s part of the social fabric of American (and elsewhere) sports and tradition. I’m an admirer of some of the “Greats” just like I am in other sports. It’s been around for a long time and I respect it.
But every good thing I said about boxing can be said about martial arts as well. I’m personally more interested and I respect martial arts more for what all it encompasses, like –it’s philosophies and teachings of the ways of a warrior’s mind, the constantly changing/improving methods and techniques over the course of it’s existence (helped in part by Bruce Lee), the teaching and skillful use of weapons, and the discipline it instills in mind and body.

hey phillster (if you’re there) you thought my first post was long…I actually think this one could kill someone. Like in the movie AIRPLANE! When the passengers were killing themselves sitting next to Ted, having to listen to his stories about the war and his life. Is anyone pouring gasoline on their computer? But I feel better now, writing is like therapeutic for me.
btw – did Dirty Duck’s sister write this news article? :)

Watched all the main card fights from UFC 118 here in Swedish Television, but haven’t seen the Joe Lauzon against Gabe Ruediger fight. Since it won submission of the night it would have been a good fight to watch i thikn. Anyway Frankie Edgar did a superb job.
