VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Video: Eddie Van Halen on Lopez Tonight

Two days ago the VHND was contacted by someone in the Van Halen camp that asked us to spread the news about a Van Halen-related segment that would be on the 100th Episode Celebration of the Lopez Tonight show the next day. We were given the impression that the VH segment would be more extensive than what it turned out to be.

The segment that aired showed Eddie noodling on guitar, congratulating George Lopez, and presenting him a signed Wolfgang. This segment was one of many short segments showing celebrities congratulating Lopez for the success of his show.

After the show aired, our source told us that, unfortunately, something was cut from Eddie’s video that the fans would have really liked.

Obviously, Ed wouldn’t have control of what they decide to air. You can see the edit right after Ed says, “Sorry I can’t be there…”.

The Eddie clip turned out to be the longest celebrity clip in the whole show (they saved the best for last!), and his clip received the loudest applause from the crowd. Eddie’s playing and guitar tone sounded great, and it appears that his hand has fully recovered from the surgery!

The Eddie part begins at 2:10:

If ” they saved the best for last ” , could you please find a way to tell us what’s inside the unseen video???

I mean, could find a way to “find” the cut part, and show us what’s inside?

    Thanks a lot !

I’m not saying Eddie’s an evil dude. I’m just saying he is an extremely flawed human being.

When we’re talking about class act, I’m taking it to be someone who treats others well. While Eddie in person may have been kind to fans, he sure isnt with bandmates.

So Mike deserved Eddie’s double-dealing regarding other bassists. If Eddie wasnt musically happy with Mike in the 80′s he should have manned up and threw him out then.

Instead of being passive aggressive by starting to play mikes parts on record, leaving him out of recording sessions and audtioning other bassists behind his back.

I think some of you all are too overwhelmed by Ed’s musical genius. And refuse to see that the emperor has no clothes.

To quote something DLR once said “He’s a great guitar player but a sh—y human being.”

I think Ed has come a long way in terms of sobriety. But he still has a long way to go towards making amends to people who’ve been hurt. For starters stop lying to the press saying Mike quit when he’s been trying to get rid him for years.

I loved Eddie’s music. Just dont tell he is a wonderful person. That’s something he needs to work on.

    JH2,
I agree. I’m sure messing around on the computer is pretty far down at the bottom of the list of things that Ed, Al, & Dave will think of doing when they start their day.

  • bbl

Okay guys and gals. I know that I may be obsessive about this but how is this George Lopez guy so famous. There is absolutely NOTHING funny or entertaining about him. Does he prepare his monologue in advance, or does he just do a few lines of coke and wing it. How the hell does TBS allow this guy to get up there and spew such crap??? Watching his show makes me embarrassed as hell for him and everyone who endorses him. And its not because he is hispanic at all. The guy just sucks ass so bad!!! Who the hell did he have to blow to get where he is??? What a loser!!!! Eddie is the greatest guitarist to ever walk the face of the planet. I hope he doesn’t put ANY Lopez on ANY track. EVER!!!!

  • Karl

Sorry Jim, JH2, do you really think that big bands do their own websites? Seriously? You think Bono sits down and updates the U2 website. You think Angus and Malcolm spend their time updating AC/DC.com?

  • SCAR

Get real people, it’s classic!! That clip was made on purpose just to stir the pot!!! It’s a classic DLR move!!! EVH & DLR you guys still fucking rule!!!!!!!

  • Lupercal

Good call Karl. Its not uncool to update your website – its probably the best way to communicate with your fans (hence why VHND, Van-Halen-Links and other such websites exist).

Its because we’re living in an age where many other artists, like Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails release music on their website. Especially solves Ed’s problem of everyone torrenting his album – make people interested, offer a free track, get the traffic flowing, and people will definitely buy the album. If Chickenfoot can get a Gold album in this day and age then Eddie Van Halen sure as hell can.

They could do so much more with their resources, but its their choice. I’m happy with VHND at the moment.

  • Bubbah Riley

Hmm. What people in the VH camp would censor Ed? He/they’re not signed, so there’s no label oversight and Janie would have had a detailed discussion with him prior to the taping, thereby forestalling any premature announcements. Moreover, if Janie or anyone else in the VH camp knew that it (i.e., the news) was going to be pulled or nixed, why contact VHND (presuming it was her that did so. Obviously I don’t know that but who else would it be?).

    Two thoughts:

    1. Maybe once the segment was recorded (and releases/emails sent to pertinent sites such as this one), Lopez’s producer contacted someone in the VH camp (presumably Janie) and said “Well, hell, why don’t we just have Eddie on the show soon and he can plug his new project (or whatever news that he’s got)?” It was then deemed wisest to feature him in a full segment rather than a quick five second encapsulation of “the news” (whatever that may be).

    2. If there is real news, why not shoot a video and post it to the official site? I know: unlikely, since the site hasn’t been touched since Dec. 29. Perhaps that’s because this “news” only pertains to Eddie and not VH collectively. Who needs TV these days to promote a project when there’s YT?

OK, more than enough from me.

  • vnhalen8

Tommy Boy : Change your name to clueless…ok!

  • Kimberly

This was a fun clip to see…glad to see Eddie is lookin’ good and playin’ well…5 seconds or no…it was off the chain!

Like I always say…long as Ed’s happy..I’m happy. I can stick with the classics for a little while longer…they are timeless and incredible!!

Scar– I always love what you have to say…you are so right my friend.

  • Kimberly

Love you Eddie…keep doin’ your thing.

  • pushtoshove

Holykryptonite is right on the money

  • skutch

I’m gone for a couple of weeks and I come back to more bitchin’ by the ‘fans’. zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  • scottt

Karl, you complain his tone sucks from some 5 second clip, and you get your panties all in bunch after a few credible sources say Ed’s in the studio right fkn now. Maybe you should call it a day as a fan get the fuck outta here. Goes for the rest of you knuckleheads who think you are holier than the almighty Edward Van Halen. Yeah it would be nice if they updated their website, but what you gonna do about it? Bitch and complain and putting down your hero, who is only freakin’ human, isn’t gonna change anything, other than piss off some of the other fans and make yourself look like a jackass. Take a chill pill.

  • snowman

Right on Scar! Old schools fans rock on!!!! First six is all i need if they never write another song! Ed looked and sounded good too me! Nice tone as well!!!

  • D Alexander Toluca Lake

Michael Anthony has NOTHING to complain about.

Many bands only give publishing credit to the person(s) who write a song.

Until recently Van Halen has split the publishing four ways. Mike was not someone who was sitting with Eddie at 5150 while he wrote the music. Eddie essentially wrote most of the songs and then told Mike what he wanted from him on the track.

In other words, Micheal Anthony earned the same amount of $$$ from Van Halen publishing, merchandise and touring as Eddie did. Even though Eddie wrote most of the music.

Micheal Anthony has made out like a bandit financially.

    No sympathy here.

The only thing I will concede is that it was lame that Mike was taken off the songs he played on in Guitar Hero. To replace him with Wolfgang on songs Mike recorded was in poor taste and a bit spiteful.

  • redarrow5150

I’ve never seen a :15 second clip get more analyzed than a Jenna Jameson movie. Good grief it’s clear he’s joined Axel Rose in how to record a new album. It was last year when his son graduated, his marriage and now the surgery they would be back. I suspect when CF starts hyping the next studio gig they will announce a new album and the slappies will be waiting again. (Crickets)

  • Matteau23

Boy, I’ll tell you one thing. When that clip cuts back live to the show and Lopez is playing the guitar and the crowd is going nuts and the lights are flashing wildly.. I got chills for just a second because I could swear the camera was gonna pan to the band and Eddie was gonna be wailing. Alas, not to be..

  • Scottso

    @ holykryptonite:

“I’m not saying Eddie’s an evil dude. I’m just saying he is an extremely flawed human being…”

It’s like you read my mind. I agree with everything you said in that post.

  • timothyj

Okay maybe that is a non-alcohol beer..Ed’s a dry drunk will be for a while.
    But..
Damn Im sick of the BS waiting game for them.

  • Nat

Wow, I *can’t believe* how much analysis has gone into a few seconds of video here.

LOOK AT THE BEER! EDDIE’S DRINKING AGAIN!
A NEW ALBUM’S COMING BUT HE WASN’T ALLOWED TO SAY IT!
EDDIE’S ON FIRE! WAIT, NO HE’S NOT!

Come on, this was what, 10 second max? I hardly think we can consider this some huge statement on Eddie’s part. And why was he even picked for this? It’s not like he’s particularly newsworthy lately. Is Lopez a huge fan? Do they know each other somehow?

It’s telling though, how much discussion this little clip has created. Imagine if VH put out some *actual news*

  • Jeff

    holykryptonite, well said.

  • temple5150

You know, personally I could care less if VH ever released another album. I have my “dreams” and my “wishes” to hear more from the guys, but, really, if they never released another thing, I’d be okay with it. VH1, VH2, WaCF, Fair Warning, Diver Down…1984…classic. Those are the 6 that will define them forever (DLR era anyways). Somehow a “new” album, amidst all the turmoil and controversy would just be self-serving. Had they progressed as a band continuously for the last 25 years and produced new material and several albums I could buy into the wanting of new material after an “extended absence”. But now, I could really care less. If by some miracle of God (no, not you Eddie) a “new album” should appear, don’t get me wrong, I’d buy it — but it wouldn’t be in the rotation nearly as much as the classics.

On another note: what if it isn’t his beer in the video? Anyone thought of that? ;-)

  • http://none Dirty Duck

Just ordered: Good To See You Again Alice Cooper-Billion Dollar Babies tour-1973 on dvd….

There ARE other outlets besides waiting and arguing for VH…

  • dude

Can’t see the big deal about the beer bottle. Other people are probably in the studio, too. I did notice a guitar pick on the floor and I’m sure that’s the one he used in ’82 at the Enormo Dome gig.

  • ME!!

My God!! Hey, Old School Halen & Top Jimmy, since you guys have nothing positive or decent to add to the discussion (or ANY discussion I’ve ever read your comments on) why don’t you go buy yourselves a popsicle and chill out?

I mean there’s always some sort of negativity on these boards, but geez…you guys are just abysmally depressing. Go hang out at the Roth Army site with the other groucha$$es.

Eddie looked great, he was havin’ fun and we’re gettin’ a new album within the next 10 to 12 months. I can’t wait.

  • Tommy Boy

vnhalen8…clueless ’bout what exactly? What you’re referring to obviously….

  • Dooley

“La Cucaracha” kicks ass. We finally got that new Van Halen music we were lookin’ for. Woo hoo!!!

  • Jeffro

I saw a long kneck bottle and a red bull can. Big deal. Mind your own bid’ness folks. He’s a grown man. He can do whatever he wants.

Ed sounds great and looked happy. He can drink Gulf Oil Water for all I care. Just glad he’s playin’.

I bet whatever was cut was considered to take away from the point of the show which is congrat’s to George. VH news would have trumped that. It was probably nothing more than what has trickled out by Dweezil and John 5.

  • Dooley

Duck: You’re an Alice Cooper fan too? Outstanding.

He scowled at me when, during “Desparado” (the song where he intentionally sounds like Jim Morrison for a bit), I made a big deal out of my Doors t-shirt from my spot in the 7th row, Emerald Queen Casino show in Tacoma WA a few years back. The scowl was perfect, he was in his Alice persona. One of the coolest things that ever happened to me.

  • ringostore

Eddie looked good, his sound was very distorted with massive chorus, not as bright as he usually plays except for the squeal he made at the end. Yup the hack playing for George played Panama with wimpy rhythm, he shouldn’t have attempted it.

Better than watching Tom Cruise talk about aliens and mayonnaise. Glad to see Cameron wearing make up! Hooah.

  • tru5150

that harmonic he played at the end sounded beast! really thick and strong sounding. man, i’d love to try one of those new wolfgangs. ed’s done so much for electric guitar playing. no matter what he does from here on out I respect him and am grateful for him.

  • Simon

nice move eddie, great, now release an album and come to Europe with VHDLR !

  • chris.omeara

I really just enjoyed getting to see the inside of 5150 Studio’s control room. Seeing Ed happy, funny and playing guitar (and talking coherantly) made all the better… :)

  • http://www.21Black.com Leo

Eddie, you rock! that was such a nice gesture and a classy one at that for giving George Lopez a signature guitar of yours. On behalf of myself and my buddy who sooo admires you, Robert G., and 21Black band——we anticipate your next recorded work.
