VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Lopez Tonight

Thursday June 24th is the 10oth Episode Celebration of LOPEZ TONIGHT on TBS. Guests stars are to be Kobe Bryant, Dane Cook and Louis C.K.

The show bills itself as “high-energy, opinionated, irreverent and very funny”. But that’s not the only reason why we suggest that Van Halen fans be sure to watch the episode.

11pm/10pm Central.

  • Old School Halen

In the last couple years, Eddie has only appeared in public twice — a brief bathroom cameo on “Two and A Half Men” and a shout-out guitar giveaway on “Lopez Tonight”. And yet, Dweezil Zappa says he’s on fire?

This is not the mighty Van Halen I grew up idolizing! There was no schmoozing with Hollywood douchers in those days…..just plenty of kick-ass rock ‘n roll with lots of attitude to back it up.

  • AndyM

    Stevie,

With all due respect that was NOT the message on here. I can see why the eternally hopeful readers assumed an announcement was coming. The post says:

“The show is high-energy, opinionated, irreverent and very funny. But that’s not the only reason why we suggest that Van Halen fans be sure to watch the episode.”

That choice of words makes it sound like it would be worth everyone’s time. Kind of led on the inmates in the asylum don’t ya think???

  • JH2

HOW VAN HALEN 1 WAS THAT TONE?!?!?!?!?!?!?! HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Canes_fan5150

Wow. I think we overhyped a little bit. It will come though. Wolfie just graduated so they are probably recording right now. Maybe it was a hint that their new Album will be mariachi music

  • Matt (from Mass)

WOW!!!! …. what a bunch of whiners commenting on here! That was awesome…. I said awesome!! I thought Eddie looked great and sounded great!!

  • Ron R.

Damn it!! we are tired of waiting for something, anything!! Where’s Dave? let him speak!! because the van halen bros. don’t care about their fans.

  • JH2

Anyone else notice Eddie played La-Coocaracha?

  • sike5150

yes, it was that tone JH2!

  • sike5150

Anyone notice, Eddie didn’t slurrrr like he used to. The man has been saying his Serenity prayer. Great comeback Ed!!!

  • The Booger Man

Looks like Eddies letting the rock helmut slowly return

  • Karl

    How predictable.

  • freddiegirl

I was happy to see Eddie looking good. A live performance would’ve been nice but when I saw all the cameos and shout outs I knew that’s probably what it would be. As a Laker fan it was cool to see Kobe but I would’ve preferred an interview with Artest or Fisher.

  • Kayser Sozay

sike5150 – I hope you’re right. Because the first impression I got from that brief appearance is that he’s fallen off the wagon. He didn’t look nearly as healthy as he has to me in the recent past. I know he slurs because of his tongue surgery but I’ve heard drunk Ed after his surgery and sober Ed after his surgery and this Ed appeared to me to be the former. I didn’t notice the beer bottle like someone here wondered about. Hopefully, my impression is way off.
I did, however, notice the typical cigarette tucked into into the guitar strings. I hope that’s the only addiction that’s still got him.

  • Tbop

Hahah – you guys are a bunch of flamers –

Ed’s having a ball up there – laughin his head off -

Those papers scattered around and general junk means he’s working.

Tone sounds spot on – little bit of Bonanza at the start of the riff – he’s goofin off – and baking the next VH cake – keep her lit, ED!!

  • mayhem5150

i’ve heard rumors that there was actually something of excitement to VH fans planned to be on the show, but it was cut…. hopefully that comes through and we figure out a) if that’s true and then b) what it was

  • mh5150

All I keep hearing is be patient. I have so much patients you would think I was a doctor. LOL Its coming folks (VH annoucment). And so is 2012. MIKE

  • k-swizzle

I’m a little dreamer….Lets hope its in the cards in 2011…

  • SCAR

It was still good to see and hear a glimpse of EVH!!!! The true fans still dig you brother ,keep fucking rocking!!! Later Haters!!!

  • Pete

Ed looked good, however…VERY over-hyped. I was foolish to think he would’ve made a guest appearence. I’m very glad that I DBR’d it because I didn’t have to sit through that show…to hear him say ‘sorry he couldn’t be there’.
He must be pretty busy…ya know, with the new album and tour and all….

  • Pete

oh, and btw, I can’t believe no one is mentioning how wasted he looked when the camera first came on him…i thought he was drunk as hell…

  • Phil

Ok, it’s friday, I didn’t watch the show. What happened?

  • JB

I got really worked up about the announcement of a new album. I have been punked. Big Time!

  • Old School Halen

I actually would’ve been pissed if Eddie announced a new album and tour on the ultra-dumb Lopez show. The show is awful and unfunny and reminds me of a weak ripoff of the Arsenio Hall Show.

An official announcement of a new album and tour needs a proper venue befitting the Mighty Halen — perhaps the Tonight Show with Leno or a big press conference like they did at the Four Seasons for the last tour.

  • daveman5150

BLAH! Just normal typical EVH BS! Don’t get your hopes up, even about what Zappa had to say.

  • J5150C

I haven’t seen it yet, but I’ll tell ya, reading all the drama here is pretty entertaing! It is highly unlikely that I’ll watch it because I don’t really give a flying fuck whether VH puts out or not. If and when they do; cool. In the mean time, I’ll keep coming back here to read the bitching, groping, whining and complaing. At 45 (been a VH fan since 13), I sure as hell am not going to ask, beg or insist that VH return and put out music which does not exist. Get real people. That’s like asking Jim Page to wright part II to Stairway To Heaven. Why can’t you guys just accept the fact that it’s not in them anymore. Besides, had the music existed, we would’ve heard it a long time ago. Therefore, go out and buy the new Wolf special and write what you think would be the kick ass riffs to the new album because Ed is sure as hell not gonna do it!

    Out!!

  • James

Eddie did give news about recording the new CD, but it was cut out by Lopez’s editors for whatever reason…

  • Aldo

He gave George Lopez a guitar for his 100th show, he wasn’t there personally, they taped a greeting from him at his studio.
It was cool to see Eddie for sure.

  • dude

While it was a bit disappointing in terms of “the big announcement,” I thought Ed looked good and healthy. He spoke coherently which is more than we can say for some of his past interviews. And at least the studio gear was on! That means something, right? Right?

If you’re feel frustrated, just go crank up VH1. That will fix you!

  • Mike Thomas

Well, it was good to see Ed and a shot of the control room. But I think that was kind of a let down only because Ed tipped off the fans. It’s cool that he taped a message to his buddy George. If that was a surprise last night I think everybody would have been pleased. We would have watched it as a clip on the news desk and this message board would be totally different today.Believe me I was pumped up too for some earth shattering revelation, but c’mon guys it’s Van Halen.

  • THE ATOMIC PUNK

    What bull*hit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey Ed been a fan of yours since 76!!!! Tell you what man either sh*t or get off the F’n pot!!!

  • Mark Sachs

Of course we all knew what was going to happen when we saw all these celeberities with their videotaped congradulations to Lopez! It was only a matter of time before they showed one of Ed. It was obivious that he wasn’t going to be sitting in with the band because Lopez would have announced that at the beginning of the show. Ed did look good as he has put some of his weight back on. Which makes him look healthier.

I am like the rest of you guys that is hoping for new music and a matching tour. However, with 2010 half over with it is looking more and more dire for this year. Wow, these years just keep ticking by for all of us whether we like it or not!

  • ME!!

    He looked & sounded good.

Anyone else pay an ounce of attention to the fact he told George to get his “ass” up to 5150 to put some Lopez on a track?

Sounds to me like they’re recording a new album. That is good news. People, it’s what’s not said that speaks volumes. Where’s Dave, you ask? At 5150. We haven’t heard from him because he’s still in the band and they’re recording. He’s not going to come out and mouth off like he usually would and you all know full well how Dave likes to.

Ed said he was getting married, Wolfe had to graduate and then into the studio. It takes a while sometimes to write & record an album (TRUST me on this one…we’re going on 15 years now) and according to a source, Ed is a perfectionist.

@Old School Halen – It wasn’t Dweezil who said Ed was on fire. Dweezil said Eddie played some of the new stuff off the new album. John 5 is the one who said Ed was on fire.

@sbc – Could have been one of the non-alcoholic beers Ed used to drink the first time he tried to quit drinking back in 1994-95.

Things look good to me. Can’t wait for the new stuff!

  • Russ

Ok just watched it online and have the following to say:
    1) EVH did not look or act drunk – he actually looked fairly healthy, at peace, content and happy.
    2) The Wolfgang is one sweet axe.
    3) The Arsenio bit was a favorite.
    4) Did not notice a beer bottle, but wasn’t looking.
    5) I believe that you cannot build a studio like that and not produce music…”Stay patient my friend.”

  • jim

If that was Mike, everyone would be saying “class act”, “good guy”, “at least he’s up doing something”, “mike does it for the fans”.
    Meanwhile Ed is getting blasted.

  • Vanicionado

I watched via stream this morning…

La-Coockaracha, La-Coockaracha… Pretty nice how Eddie shredded that song!

Not sure what everyone else was expecting after the “Two And A Half Men” appearance.

Wish Eddie would send me a guitar. I think Lopez could probably afford to buy one himself.

    Sigh.

  • dude

@ME!!: Can’t wait for this stuff, no mo’ : )

  • Dooley

First I’ve heard him play (although just for a few seconds) in quite some time. Seems like his left hand has fully healed after his surgery early this year.

  • Old School Halen

One thing I know for sure — if Eddie AND Dave were both in the studio in that clip on the Lopez show…..we all would be jizzin’ our undies right now! That would be a huge sign that VH is clicking on all cylinders and indeed recording a new album and then we’d be going full-on apeshit as expected.

However with no Dave in sight, we are left to our wild speculations as always — is Roth at 5150 laying down some tasty vocals, or is he back in NYC delivering babies on his EMT shifts while Ed noodles and gives away guitars to his Hollywood buddies? NONE OF US FUCKING KNOWS AND IT’S FRUSTRATING AS HECK.

  • bsc

I doubt Ed is drinking. Like “ME!!” said its probably one of those non-alcoholic beers. It sure wasn’t a Heineken haha as for his tone I wouldn’t say it was van halen 1 at all but he looks good and sounds good. lets just hope his good mood is because they just finished up a kick ass track for the new record!

  • Joshua

Too much buildup, I agree. But it’s not like the VHND could say “don’t watch the first 57 minutes of the show.” I suffered through it, but it could’ve been worse. I’m not a Lakers fan, but Kobe was cool. And the comedian, while ruining my appetite with some of his jokes, was fairly funny. As for Ed, it was SOMETHING. He definitely sounded like he had a few, but the way he talks I never know anymore. He was in the studio, beautiful guitar in hand, working, and having a little fun. It was 20 seconds, but who cares – WE GOT TO SEE IT. And sure, if we didn’t watch, we would’ve found a way to see it after the fact, but I don’t care. It wasn’t much, but I’ll take it.

  • RobCT

Eddie announced he is joining the Atomic Punks as the new guitar player! Seriously, the fans deserve more Ed. We helped put you where you are now. At least give us a DVD of the last tour!

  • The Booger Man

Is that clip on you tube yet?

  • freddiegirl

Booger Man..I don’t think so, I just checked youtube and didn’t find anything. Unless I’m typing in something wrong…I typed “eddie van halen george lopez show” and got nothing.

You know…..considering about 5-6 years ago we thought that EVH might not have that long to live I for one am happy to see him. Once I saw all the celebrity shout-outs I knew what to expect and was happy to see a little more..I really thought he’d just wish Lopez well.

  • bbl

You can see the clip on the George Lopez website.

I think Ed looked good. And I don’t think he looked drunk at all.

I really think an album is in the works here people. I think Eddie is going to want to record with his son and help push Wolfies career to the next level–solidifying his position as the bands leader in the future. There has to be album coming. And its going to kick ass!!!

  • Aftershock

There’s nothing wrong with the video cameo Eddie did last night. It’s a PR problem. If the initial announcement would have said something like: “Hey, Eddie is making a brief video cameo on the Lopez show tonight in honor of its 100th episode, check it out!” then nobody would be having an issue with it today.

It would seem that PR 101 would include the mandate to “Under-promise and over-deliver.” By leaving the announcement cryptic, it fueled everyone’s imaginations as to some big announcement (and maybe something was cut out by the show’s editors, like has been mentioned — there was an obvious editing gap in the video). Still, everyone would have a lot more patience if PR announcements were a bit more often and a bit more clear.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

I cannot believe many of you expected “something big” from VH on this lame ass show.

First off….could care less about lopez. Not funny at all.
Second….if VH was releasing a new album, or doing a world tour, I wouldnt want my news source to be this fuckin’ show.

The day may come….it may not….but I aint wastin’ a summer waiting for anwsers…..

  • Opusthe1

It was a lot better than I expected, reading these posts.

You can see it on lopeztonight.com and it is broken out so you just have to sit through the celebs tape. Saved the best for last. Ed was the only celeb I heard get applause when he came on.

  • Rick Pride

Everyone, myself included should take it easy on Eddie. Hey guys we got to see our idol in 5150 studios playing freaking great. Who cares if that was one beer or not. I saw a red bull too. He is a recovering alcoholic. Does that mean he won’t slip up once in a while and have one??? Who cares. He didn’t seem drunk. He gets nervous on TV. So what!!. We got to see the greatest guitarist of all time. I for one love him and worship the ground he walks on. He’s freaking sounding and looking great. He’s working hard to deliver us new music. It was well worth sitting through 56 minutes of shit to see our Eddie!!!! Thanks Eddie I appreciate you!!!!!

  • Old School Halen

Eddie has done a lot of dumb stuff in the past….but announcing a new VH album and tour with Dave on the stupid Lopez show would have been a PR disaster of the highest magnitude. The show is lame, and Lopez is washed-up (which is why his sitcom got cancelled) and any big VH announcement there would spell doom for any new project with Roth.

Dave knows how to handle PR better than anybody — which is why they announced the 2007-2008 world tour at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills, which is a proper venue for such a momentous event. It went over quite well and hit all the major news channels in quick fashion. Let’s hope they do the same thing for the 2010-11 tour!

On a side note, who cares if Eddie is drinking a little beer? As long as he’s not guzzling two cases of Schlitz Malt Liquor every night like in his youth, then I saw chug a few cold ones and let those inspired riffs flow late into the night! We are all smart enough here to know that Ed’s best work came from when he was libated off his ass.

  • http://vhnd Emery

Just great seeing Ed at 5150. Some on here need to lighten up a bit just sayin. I love reading posts like (Rick Pride says).I think I`ll have a couple cold ones now because I`m so happy I got to see Ed play. If only for a short time. Thanks VHND for posting this. Have a great and safe weekend everyone.
