WEDNESDAY READING: Geoff’s first show

The lasting impact of David Lee Roth and Van Halen on the youth of yesterday

By Geoff Reading on March 10, 2010

This week is my sister’s birthday.  Soooooooo… Happy birthday, Jessica. Thanks for the life contributions.

The Seattle Center, and what used to be the Coliseum, is where I saw most of the rock concerts attended during my formative years. The first show I ever saw was at the hands of my older sister and her super hot friend, Melinda. It was Bumbershoot 1947, or something, and we went to see Junior Cadillac play with The Heats. I remember it being dark by the time we got in and we didn’t even bother finding our seats. We hung out right there at the head of our section’s tunnel – and no one bothered us. This was the early ‘80s.

The thing that stuck out to me was the smell. Whenever anyone in the place took a flash photo, you could see the looming smoky haze – it made the floor almost imperceptible from just a few rows up in the seats. The smell recalled (to me) chicken stock – someone cooking it: sweet and a little fowl (no pun intended) – and very pungent. I asked my sister about the chicken stock smell and she made some offhand comment to Melinda about, “someone cooking SOMETHING.” This got a chuckle out of my dates, but no real answer was forth coming. Later, I would recognize the same smell permeating from my eighth grade classmate Dennis every morning (when managed to show up) in our first period English class. He seemed to be barely awake, and while I could see his eyes were a little open, I could never get more than a mumbling little smile from him when I would ask if he had stayed up late the night before.

I also remember hearing the roar of the crowd when the Heats played “The Hit”. Even I had heard the song “I Don’t Like Your Face” – but it didn’t register that day, that this – and the job of the guys on stage – would be a really amazing way to spend your life. That happened a few years later, at the first rock show I went to sans chaperon.

My parents made sure that honor would not happen until after I turned 16. When I hit the milestone, my parents celebrated by purchasing me a ticket to see Van Halen on the 1984 tour. Check that. They got me a ticket and they let my brother buy a ticket  – and they even gave me money for a shirt.

The day of the show was a school day, my brother and I met up after third period, walked to the bottom of the stairs that lead up to our high school, and jumped on the Metro. 35 minutes later, the bus dropped us off in another universe – one certainly without parents. From the looks of it, there were almost no rules that applied to a concert day at Seattle Center. There were obvious minors imbibing – over imbibed, even. There were joints being smoked out in the open. It was almost beyond belief by today’s (or any) standards.

When Van Halen finally hit the stage, opening with “Unchained”, I was sold. I looked around and saw all those people in that venue having the absolute time of there lives: immersed in a world where rules don’t apply and pushing the limits is the lay of the land. All those people sharing in an almost religious like experience, and only four of them on stage.

It didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out who was going to have the BEST time. Or who would get to push the limits the furthest. It was a conscious decision to point my ship in that general direction, made right after the first song was through. I was standing less than five feet from where David Lee Roth, who had taken his place out on his cat walk jutting out some 20 feet from the stage – splitting the crowd into Michael’s side and Eddie’s side. All the lighters came out and the waves of energy came rolling onto the stage. It was tangible. I could feel it. DLR just stood there in his shit-faced Jesus Christ pose – taking it all in.

Then they played “Jamie’s Crying” and DLR screwed up the words. He sang the first verse twice. NO ONE CARED! I was floored.

So let me get this straight. Not only do they get to do this no holds barred party every night, they don’t even have to even get all the words right?!! Where the Fuck do I sign up?

That was it. It wasn’t a specific, “This is what I’m going to do with my life” proclamation, but until something came along that challenged what I had witnessed as being capable, I was going to work toward a life on stage.

It would take 25 years, creating a life, and a life threatening disease to finally topple the pursuit of that dream as the only possible way to spend my waking hours.

    @Jim and Dooley

You guys are such whiners.Have you even seen =VH= in
concert? If you had then these stories would bring back great memories for you. There doesn’t seem to be any new info coming from the =VH= camp so for now this is all us true fans have.
If you are so bored here why don’t you go and watch Mad Anthony T.V. I’m sure that would be a thrill a minute (sarcasm,
    sorry MA).

    Happy Birthday, Wolfie!!!

  • Panama Red

Phillster – I always like reading or hearing about personal stories like that.
“Hoth” heh heh. I caught the “40 Below” reference too.
When you first started talking about the guy on the ten-speed I had no idea you were going to say that it was DLR. It seems like there’s usually a guy like that riding around on his bike around the entrance to the place. That’s pretty weird and funny how Dave was doing that and that the people who were paying to see him were the ones insulting him calling him a nerd and everything.
And about him yelling at a guy in the crowd, that is classic Dave. It seems like he does that a lot. I wonder if sometimes there’s not really anybody in the audience doing something to piss him off and that’s just his schtick.

When I saw him on the Sam & Dave tour (which was awesome) he did that same kind of thing. I think it was water he said someone was squirting at him or something like that, I can’t remember exactly. And then he said something like I’ll kick your ass and I think he said something about the guy’s girlfriend too. Ha ha.
I’m pretty sure he has said those kind of things 100 times before at other shows but it was still funny. I thought he was really pissed off at first but nobody was probably even messing with him in the first place. He probably just wanted to say that, y’know because of his persona and everything. I don’t know, maybe someone really was doing that.
He’s a great entertainer. The DLR band rocked the hell out of the place that night.

  • Kimberly

    HAPPY BDAY WOLF!!=)

    Keep on rockin! <3

    VH FOREVERRR

  • scott

Let’s all raise a toast tonight,”happy birthday Wolfgang!” and to new Van Halen…cheers people!:)

  • Tommy Boy

Alright….since we’re on this binge….who saw the Sam and Dave Tour? Thoughts?

  • DLR

It’s 3/16 folks, how about a happy 19th birthday for Wolfgang VanHalen???????? Get with it VHND………

  • D.O.A.

I saw it @ The Gorge Amphitheater, Tommy. Really good show…maybe not Dave’s best night, (as he missed a few lyrics) but it was a blast. Loved his guitarist. Dave opened that particular night, and Sam finished it up pretty nicely.

  • D.O.A.

And dammitt…I wish they could have gotten past any ego trips that kept them from doing something together! That would have been pretty freakin’ cool.

  • DiamondDean

    tommy boy
only saw it on that vh1 documentory , thought daves show was a million times better , Dave cld of won easy if he hadnt just sang vh songs , yankee rose was played , but gees he cld of played ” just like paradise” californian girls” , just a gigalo , goin crazy , shy boy etc ,hang em high n light up the sky wld of just topped it off.

I saw Dave in 88 on the skyscraper tour , the best concert ive ever seen , VH or hagar werent even close .

  • DiamondDean

    happy bday wolfgang

  • andym

Yeah where’s the “Happy Birthday Wolfgang” post??? That’s the only real news out of Van Halen these days…birthdays, weddings, high school graduations, Eddie pedalling off guitar equipment, Janie’s “time of the month”, flashbacks to when Dave wore spandex (wait…he kinda still does), bar mitzvahs & weddings the Reverand Al presides over, etc.

  • andym

Maybe Eddie kicked out his kid too and we’re just waiting for the next announced tour to find out in a press conference.

  • scott

    ..bag!

  • Ronald

    Hello,

Excuse me for my poor English writing. I am dutch but I will do the best I can. It would be nice that mister Roth and the Van Halen family would have the same lasting impact of the youth of today. So, the question remains. WHEN WILL THERE BE A NEW RECORD. THE PROMISE IS MADE YEARS AGO. DO WHAT YOU HAVE PROMISED US OR AT LEAST GIVE US AN UPDATE OF THE PLANS FOR VH IN 2010. An `as time has gone by´ old VH fan.

  • hawk51

Just announced on seattle radio that the problem with no new tunes is not dave but with eddies ongoing medical condition.

  • scott

hey man…what station, what did they say exactly? Uh oh…?!

  • hawk51

KZOK classic rock.they said something about 5 new songs finished but everything is on hold due to eddies ongoing medical condition.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    hawk51:

If what you’re saying is indeed true than that would clear up an armful of shit that’s been a question lingering around here…..or not.
I for one think it makes complete sense.
We all know that eddie has not been well physically in quite sometime. Remember the 2007 tour when it was almost cancelled due to his “medical problems”?
Guys…I dont want to be the guy playing the worlds smallest violin here, but my mom passed of cancer in 98′. I’ve seen what it can do to a person physically AND mentally. It’s very scary, believe me. Now granted, ed is still alive and from what we’ve been told, cancer free. But how do we really know (and himself too) if that statment is true? Cancer can pop up out of nowhere all over again and the damage can be just as worse. We spend so much time bitchin’ about this, bitchin’ about that, at each other, that we tend to foget that this is a “human being” we’re talking about and who knows how many more years he’ll be around. I hope forever, but I know…we all know….that can not be. I’m getting the feeling that something has not been right due to his current state of health. If thats the case we better change our attitudes around here real fast, or who knows what the next “news update” could be. Could be something a lot more drastic. I hope ed’s ok…..I would never want to know that he went through what my mom went through. Have faith….but say a prayer for ed….will ya guys?

  • kayser sozay

Tommy Boy – I caught the Sam & Dave tour. Fun to see both and the crowd appreciated them both but it wasn’t much of a contest as far as who was better and received the bigger audience response. Dave just doesn’t have the pipes anymore and didn’t seem nearly as comfortable on stage as Sam did. Sam did close the show so that may have helped him.

And Hawk51, I’m curious too. . . Did they say what Ed’s “ongoing medical condition” was?

  • hawk51

no specifics, but one can only speculate.I hope its nothing serious.

  • http://www.cabowabo.com No Mas Tony

Yo, hawk51 — if you don’t even know WHAT you heard, or can say what the fuck station it was on… why even post that shit here, dude? Like, was it KISW 99.9 or what!? Sounds to me like a DJ is talking outa his ass, or maybe you are?

Last we all knew, Ed had that hand surgery, what else is going on?….

I just googled the hell out of that and all that pops up are stories of the ’08 concert postponed for rehab.

With a facebook page, a myspace page, a twitter account, and a national website is it REALLY too much to just have your publicist put out a little news snippet to appease your fans? …I’m just sayin

  • freddiegirl

Eddie’s ongoing medical condition?! Oh no…. :( I wish him all the best and hope it’s nothing serious; at the end of the day I’d rather see Eddie happy and healthy.

  • scott

Calm down people. Wait for the facts before you go off! Thanks for the little bit of news hawk51…at least it’s something. Let’s just hope things are gonna be alright…

  • Charles:

When VAN HALENE released their 1st Album in ’78,it was like
breth of fresh air.The Music World had taken a block of bad
blows in ’77 and VH was the enima that Rock fans needed to
enjoy life again. They put the fun times back in Rock&Roll.
Seeing their Tours in Oakland,SF,CA and the US Festival Show
will never be dupbubated. VH and HAGAR were alrite.Their ’07
-’08 Tour kicked ass.The original VAN HALEN= Dam Good Times.

  • Tommy Boy

Charles: Love the spirit bro, but…shit…what the fuck is “dupbubated”? Is that a sexual term? Or did you mean “duplicated”? Peace…

  • Dooley

Hopefully the “medical condition” is his hand needing more time to fully heal following the surgery he had some months ago, and nothing more. And hopefully his cancer remains dormant so he can live out a normal lifespan or beyond. Duck’s right, it’s worth praying about, for those so inclined.

  • jason

I seen the guys on that 84 tour, I am the oldest of four kids, I have influenced all my younger siblings to be VH fans.I have taken them all to see their concerts as well as my own children, unfortunately Sammy was with them for those shows, they were still great shows, but not the party that I recall form the 80′s. I did take my son to see them in 08, it was like going to a highschool reunion and seeing old friends,I didnt realize how much I missed those guys, yeah the are older, just as I am , I think thats what made it so special. Through all their trials , they still bring it! They are still special and make you feel like you were personally invited to the party.

  • RickieVanWhalen

I saw them on the following tours and locations:

Fair Warning – MSG (sat in the nose bleeds!)
    1984 – MSG (1st row 1st level)
F.U.C.K – MSG and Long Island (front row baby!)
VHIII – MSG and Long Island (front row and 5th row!)
VH with DLR Reunion – MSG 2x and Long Island 1x (all first two rows!)

The Fair Warning tour was the best. VHIII was also great and cherone deserves alot more credit than he gets!

  • http://none Dirty Duck

    Rickie!

    You from long island man?

    Just curious, cause I am!

    What part, if you are?
