  1. ben says:

Good to see Mike happy, it’s a shame his not in VH anymore, and that the CF music is lame.

  2. Top Jimmy says:

Why don’t Eddie and Alex put out videos like this? They have no idea how much it would appease the fans.

  3. Jim says:

Mike is a good guy and all. Cool dude. I thank him for his contributions in VH. Wish him all the success going forward. The guy is great.

But, he is boring. He’s just a regular guy. A boring regular guy. A boring good guy. Explains why he no longer fits in VH.

  4. Dooley says:

    Jim:

I’d say at least VH really misses “boring regular guy” Mike’s backing VOX. A lot of people thought he really was “there” on the last tour with piped-in vocal tracks. Most obvious evidence is on the You Tube video for “Little Dreamer”.

  5. kayser sozay says:

Yeah, Jim, Mike is a good guy. And a regular guy.

And a guy that likes to make music and play for the fans. I think that better explains why he no longer fits in VH.

  6. mjc says:

i’ll take mike’s socalled boringness anyday over the prolonged dead silence that defines vh nowadays.

  7. Tommy Boy says:

Jim, no offense, but that was a retarded statement. Would you consider yourself such an exciting individual? Would you reconsider him a more exciting individual if he lit his nuts on fire and ran around screaming at the top of his lungs? He’s an awesome down to earth person that rocks, and has rocked with our boys and held his own for many, many years. Boring is an unfitting definition for Mikey. If he were back in, I don’t think you’d be inclined to refer to ‘em that way. Just a way for someone to get a dig in about CF for whatever reason….

  8. Panama Red says:

    kayser sozay – OH Snap!

Tommy Boy – Right on brotha!

  9. Panama Red says:

I also agree with Top Jimmy. How cool would that be

  10. andy says:

Sammy shouldn’t be allowed to play guitar when Satch is around…hmm…skip the part about Satch…

  11. Panama Red says:

I will definitely be checking out Mad Anthomy T.V.
But Like Top Jimmy said, I think it would be pretty friggin awesome to see something like this from VH.
Remember this: “All Dave All night, right here only on DAAAAVE TEEVEE!”
Sorry about not combining all of these tiny posts into one. My caffeinated brain has got my fingers working overtime.
It’s kind of nice to only post a few sentences. Lmfao.
And probably refreshing for everyone else to not have to scroll down have a page to get past my s**t. Ha ha.

  12. scott says:

..and so it goes…what next? Ranking bass players? Somebody has always got to start shit. How about if you have nothing good to say, shut….ah….fuck it.

  13. Tommy Boy says:

    Panama Red, Top Jimmy:
I think it would be cool to see some of that kinda stuff from VH as well. However, I personally believe it adds to over exposure. There’s only so much cutting up and laughing from dudes that I can take. Maybe there should be some mystique about a band with just a few snippets of behind the scenes stuff. Some of my favorite YT videos are the “Dreams”, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and “Catherine – Studio Cut” from 5150 to offer an insight of the studio and what goes on there. But it would be nice to get a 3 minute update from the studio of the four of them rockin’ the fuck out to a song that has yet to be presented. I would jizz in my pants….but that’s just me!

  14. Panama Red says:

I just miss the guys in Van Halen. You never see or hear about them doing anything anymore. It’s been so long.
Okay, officially walking away from the computer until my brain calms down and descends out of the red. Geez, I irritate even myself.

  15. Jim says:

I’m not saying Mike is no good. Great at what he does.
It’s easy to relate to Mike as he is most like the regular person than probably most musicians.

When he is not performing, he is boring. I admit – I would classify myself as boring as well but I enjoy my life. I’m sure Mike does too.

The more I think about it, the more he should be back in Van Halen because it would be better if we only heard from Mike when he was on stage. That is and has been the way Van Halen operates for the most part.

  16. mjc says:

    tommy boy,well put.

  17. 5cents says:

Mike is the man and he is part of a great rock outfit that actually plays new music with a singer that can still sing. He is not simply living off hits that are over 25 years old. I think the TV thing is great for the fans.

  18. andym says:

Top Jimmy & Panama Red – You will never see anything like this from Eddie and VH for that matter because it would be free. Maybe if they had a spot on the dormant VH website where you had to pay $5.99 to view it…maybe they do it.

Jim – I agree with just about everyone else that responded to your pathetic, senseless, boring, uneducated comment. How can you criticize a guy like Mikey for being boring??? All he did was keep his mouth shut (except for amazing vocals that will NEVER be replaced by Wolfie) and play music when he was in VH. Eddie kicked him out and now he’s gone on to bigger and better things while VH continues to fade into obscurity.

  19. David St. Hubbins says:

Eddie kicked him out and now he’s gone on to bigger and better things while VH continues to fade into obscurity.

Give me a break – CF is not bigger or better than VH. That was a stupid comment. If they can sell out an arena tour – I’ll begin to give them some respect – but they ain’t.

  20. Tommy Boy says:

Let’s also keep something in perspective…VH with Dave released an album every 12 months or so. After 5150, that changed while we waited until ’88 for OU812. And ever since, it’s been up in the air. Ed was 22 or 23 when that stuff started. He’s 55 now and I’m sure has no intention of releasing new music each year (but that would be AWESOME!) I don’t think any of us do the things we did while we were in our 20′s. SO MUCH shit has taken place with these folks over the past 30 years, alliances broken, friendships strained and severed. Divorces, addiction, cancer and an ill-received and under-appreciated release. I think Ed fully understands what is going on, maybe he’s disenchanted with the music industry (not that he ever liked it to begin with). Be that as it may, with technology the way it is, they wouldn’t need a record label, just a distributor, if, in fact they released a physical (and not just digital) album. We’ve gotta be more patient, if it comes, it comes. I’m hoping along with many of you that someone wises up and realizes that their camp should communicate with their fans better. There are several outlets available to do that…but as I said in my previous post. There is a mystique about VH that they’ve always had (never did a Behind the Music or any of that shit), and I think they prefer to stay in the dark and keep us there….until….

  21. Tommy Boy says:

    Alright Scott… : )

    1) Steve Harris
    2) Geddy Lee
    3) Michael Anthony
    4) John Paul Jones
    5) Sting
    6) Gene Simmons?
    can’t…seem…to…complete…list

  22. Jim says:

    andym says:

How can you criticize a guy like Mikey for being boring??? All he did was keep his mouth shut (except for amazing vocals that will NEVER be replaced by Wolfie) and play music when he was in VH.

Exactly my point. That’s boring. Also admirable. But boring.

By the way all you jerks, I’m not criticizing Mike. I’m just saying that once you get him off the stage, he’s not the most electrifying guy out there. I don’t view that as a knock at all.

  23. Panama Red says:

You made some good points Tommy Boy.
    Good stuff.

  24. Dooley says:

Scott, Tommy Boy…no particular ranking, but…

I’d put Jack Bruce, John Entwistle and Flea in there too.
And Paul McCartney, sentimental favorite, he’s a Beatle

  25. Dooley says:

And Jim, it’s OK, man. No problem with you. You’re just stirrin’ up some shit.

That’s what we do around here while we continue to monitor the VH saga. Bong toke.

  26. Tommy Boy says:

    Panama Red:
From the last thread – yeah the screen name is an homage to Farley, he was just fuckin awesome; either rendition of “Planet Caravan’ works, the Pantera version is spot on and similar to the way my buddies and I play it.

    Dooley:
    Yeah, those guys too!
Here ya go man…Steve Harris on bass, Ed on guitar, Neil Peart on drums and…..Geoff Tate on vocals! Ultimate Band!

  27. VH Encyclopedia says:

Van Halen – Released in ’78 – Edward was 23
Van Halen II – Release in ’79 – Edward was 24

Fair Warning – Released in ’81 – Edward was 26
Diver Down – Released in ’82 – Edward was 27

Edward is now 55. I wouldn’t expect too much else…

  28. Herb says:

I’d like to nominate andy, (not to be confused with andyM) for the “biggest dumbass of the day award.” Of course, it’s still fairly early and since birds of a feather tend to flock together, I think there’s a high probability of future nominations.

  29. kayser sozay says:

DavidSt.Hubbins – I don’t think andym was trying to say CF is bigger or better that VH when VH was active. But if you think about it, given the current state of VH, Mikey has in fact gone on to bigger and better things with CF.

  30. Fat Cat says:

    Kayser,

Mike missed out on the biggest tour ever to play 1,000 seat clubs and recorded an album that shipped 500,000 but only sold 350,000 and is only credited with one song on that album. I know he’s happy and I like the album, just not sure your statement holds water!!!

  31. SCAR says:

Mad Mike is staying in touch with the fans and that’s all right by me!!!! This shot of Cabo is for you!!!!

  32. ImTheOne says:

andym, kayser – that’s like saying Paul McCartney went on to bigger and better things with (Chicken)Wings after the Beatles broke up. How much nonsense can this site take? Even if VH never puts out any new music ever, any 5 minutes Eddie noodles somewhere in the future on some promo gig will be bigger and better than a whole CF tour (the audience will also be bigger). Why can’t all the Sammy and CF lovers just enjoy their “new” (not really in the sense of inventive or distinctive) music of CF and stopp pissing at Eddie. It’s enough, we acknowledge your preferences, you don’t need to “justify” them all the time by diminishing Eddie and VH.

  33. Herb says:

Since “ImTheOne” just went off and did exactly what he was complaining that others do, I give a second nod for nomination of the “biggest dumbass of the day.”

  34. 51yr old fan says:

hey imtheone, i think cf sold more than vh3 and that was pretty much an eddie project, so it looks to me like your another hater that can’t accept the truth that there is no more van halen. LET IT GO MAN guys like you will never get that the great legacy is now tarnished so don’t get pissed at the realists because we all want new music but it ain’t happening.

  35. scott says:

Lol…what about Stanley Clark, Les Claypool, Stu Hamm, Jeff Berlin, Billy Sheehan,…

  36. scott says:

Paul McCartney because he’s frikkn genius too..

  37. scott says:

..and that chick that has been playing with Jeff Beck recently is pretty ridiculous too..Tal Wilkenfeld.

  38. scott says:

Jim, don’t be such a boring regular guy. Yaaaaaaawwwwwnnnn. Seriously, do you know Mike Anthony? Then why…why do you say such foolish things? Just keepin it real.

  39. Keith says:

You people are so pathetic. All you do is rip on each other. You cant even keep your comms on point to the post subject. Ed’s right, why waste the time .

  40. swade says:

Jim, or anyone. compare how electrifying Mike Anthony is to EVH. Mikey is seen performing with a band having fun and signing autographs. EVH made an appearance at Grainger last week. Enough said. Thank you and good night.

  41. PasadenaKid says:

Just some late night rambling thoughts trickling outta my head after a couple shots of Jack D and listening to “Take Your Whiskey Home”:

    1) DO NOT RIP ON MIKE ANTHONY!! The dude is a nice motherfucker and has always been straight-up honest with VH fans — something asshole Eddie and his lying brother are incapable of for decades. Hell yes I missed him on the 2007-08 Nostalgia Tour. Jury is still out whether Mike’s backing vox were used instead of Wolfman’s….tubby seemed like he was actually singing to me anyway.

    2) I’m so sick of Chicken-Shit. When is this band going away? Not soon enough for me. I could care less that 63-yr. old Sammy Hagar is still making music — it’s GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT. Listening to Chicken-Shit is like kissing your sister and bragging about how horny you get…..ain’t gonna cut it in here. Listen to Roth Van Halen and it’s like you’re fucking the hottest stripper at the nudie club and she wants to snort a line of coke off your dick.

    3) Why didnt VH-1 ever do a “Behind the Music” special on Van Halen? There’s enough drama and funny stories to warrant a 2-hour version. Even more, why hasnt there been a movie about the life and times of the mighty VH? I heard they might be doing one on Motley Crue. Make an epic flick about the greatest American rock band of all time, dammit!

  42. kayser sozay says:

FATCAT – I stand by my statement. Mike didn’t miss out on the Roth reunion tour by choice. He was replaced by Wolfgang, remember? I wasn’t implying that CF was bigger and better than VH when VH is actually doing something.

Imtheone – While I really like CF, I don’t prefer CF to VH by any means. And your comparison to Paul McCartney and Wings doesn’t work. As you pointed out, the Beatles had broken up. You couldn’t compare wings to the then current state of the Beatles because there was no current state of the Beatles. I’m only saying (agreeing with andym) that Mike being in CF – (from the time CF began and right up to today) – has moved on to bigger and better things than what he’d have if he were in VH today because VH hasn’t done anything the entire time CF has been on the map. I’m not sure why anyone who isn’t ultrasensitive would disagree with that.

  43. ROB5150 says:

Mike is so longer in Van Halen because he choosed Sammy Hagar instead of Ed and Al. Enough said.

  44. Ryan says:

I miss Van Halen with Sammy Hagar. It was feel-good music. DLR was awesome too, but I liked the chemistry they had with Sammy Hagar. That’s why I was so sad that the 2004 tour did not work out. Not having heard from Eddie in six years, I was hoping he would come back with avengence playing songs like “Summer Nights”, “5150″, and “The Dream is Over”, but I almost feel like he left out the real difficult songs because his playing was impaired. As a guitar player, I feel like there are a lot of difficult songs to play from the Hagar era, riff-wise, like “Get Up” — I would have been amazed if Eddie played that back in 2004. Personally, I think that’s why Eddie likes playing with DLR better, I think he knows those songs better.

  45. ImTheOne says:

kayser – sorry, but for all we know VH is silent, so who knows where the bigger and better would be for Mike. The comparison with the Beatles is valid, who knew then they wouldn’t reconvene to put out something again (now yes, but in contrast all Van Halen members are still alive).

51yr old fan – the great legacy got already tarnished in 1985 the moment Sam joined the band, that’s no news. You are not realists, but just pathetic whiners. How you know new music ain’t happening? You are in 5150 everyday speaking to Ed? Who thought 5 years ago Ed and Dave would ever make up for a tour? And since when did pessimism help anything? I’m just sick of people here coming to piss about as if their frustration was Eddie’s fault. Who can’t let go? It’s the “new music” whiners, not me. They can’t let go that Sam and Mike are no longer in VH so they try to talk everything down. And I don’t care how much VH3 or CF or Van Hagger or Van Halen sold or will ever sell. If that’s your criterion I suppose you were also a big fan of Britney Spears at one point.

  46. RBL says:

    “choosed?”

  47. 51yr old fan says:

ImTheOne, do you have proof they are in the studio doing anything. and whether you like it or not how many you sell does matter because nobody does this shit for free because like you and me thaey have bills to pay so to think otherwise is ignorant. and if you think dave didn’t swallow his pride your crazy, he saw a cash cow and ran with it thats why dave doesn’t talk because he was forced to (in my opinion) so you should go back and reread your posts because you sound like the whiner and hater. THER IS NO MORE VAN HALEN you get over it.

  48. Mark says:

Mike Anthony has his own YouTube channel?

    The Apocalypse must be close….

  49. SCAR says:

I’m The One and Pasadena Kid, it’s dumb asses like you who come to this site and start the lame DLR vs Sam/ VH vs Chickenfoot drama!!!! Music was made to be enjoyed and obviously you both are to narrow minded to appreciate good music!! You don’t even realize that when you bash The Red Rocker being in VH, YOU ARE BASHING EVH TOO!! If you don’t like the Foot, that’s your choice and all I got to say, is that you idiots are missing out on some quality Rock n Roll!!! By the way Pasadena Kid, you think you are cool for calling Wolfie tubby, I know you don’t have the balls to say it to his face, because you come across like a pussy!! By the way folks that was root beer not whiskey in Pasadena Kids bottle!!! What a bunch of Gomers!!!!

  50. scott says:

Everyone just needs to calm down,….peace dudes. Where’s Kimberly and Freddiegirl….;)..?

  51. Scottso says:

It’s Saturday, I’m at work and bored as hell, so I figured I’d chime in.

Who would you rather meet and hang out with for a day: Sammy & Mike or Eddie & Alex?

  52. Rich says:

People on here have some serious issues.

    PasadenaKid says:
    MARCH 5TH, 2010 AT 11:43 PM

“1) DO NOT RIP ON MIKE ANTHONY!! The dude is a nice motherfucker and has always been straight-up honest with VH fans — something asshole Eddie and his lying brother are incapable of for decades.

    2) I’m so sick of Chicken-Shit. When is this band going away? Listen to Roth Van Halen and it’s like you’re fucking the hottest stripper at the nudie club and she wants to snort a line of coke off your dick.”

So you’re a Roth Van Halen fan, do you really think Eddie wants to put music out to people like you? “asshole Eddie”? I’m sure that he’d be a lot more willing to bring out a new album if he knew your opinion of him.

Chickenfoot is here to stay I’m afraid. You can either embrace it, or you can whine about it on the internet and assume that your opinion is somehow more valid than somebody elses.

It really really really surprises me continuously how much shit people talk about a band they supposedly love. Yeah Ed isn’t putting out new music or talking to the fans, but maybe he has his own reasons. To be honest, complaining about something isn’t going to make it happen any quicker. There is room in the world for both Chickenfoot and Van Halen, one is a lot bigger than the other – but at the same time, one is a lot more PUBLICLY active than the other.

Ed has his thing to do, Sammy and Mike have theirs, just leave it be.

I personally quite like Mike’s youtube channel – Van Halen TV only ever released one video, of “Pretty Woman”. Although this was cool they haven’t updated it in about a year or so.

  53. D.O.A. says:

Easy call…Sam and Mike. Sure miss those VH boys though!

  54. Panama Red says:

One of the many things I like about Mike Anthony is his enthusiasm. Every time he plays it’s like he’s a kid in a candy store. Just watching him in this video backstage messin’ around with Sammy and Chad you can see it in his face that he absolutely LOVES what he’s doing. He’s having the time of life.

I went to Mad Anthony’s channel on youtube. Pretty cool. There are some VH unreleased recordings of live performances that are pretty cool to listen to. Hell man, anything that seems remotely new to me as far as VH material is always welcome and appreciated. It’s something to quench that thirst a little bit while us VH fans continue to tread water waiting for anything new. Whatever, I’m not trying to be negative.
But I would love to hear all of that unreleased material that exists. And I still get the feeling a new VH album with Dave will be finished and released eventually.
Maybe not, but there’s nothing wrong with being optimistic about it.

  55. DiamondDean says:

Seriously jim, it is a pretty dumb comment , m anthony is the most decent out of them all , the only mature one thats 4 sure ,

  56. phil says:

    ha! go get em scar!

  57. Shylock5150 says:

Right now… I wish Ed was saying … I don’t want to wait ’til tomorrow. Why put it off another day? One by one, little problems, build up and stand in our way.

  58. freddiegirl says:

    Scott I’m right here.. :)
Uh…on topic I think it’s cool that Mike Anthony does this for the fans. I wish Van Halen would do something like this and know they won’t but I can still hope!

  59. Kevin L says:

Van Halen is DEAD! We should all accept it and move on. They may do another tour or another Best of, but as far as new music, they are done. Read one of Ed’s recent interviews..he says no wants to hear new music they just want to hear the old stuff. They don’t get it, never have. You think all these other longterm bands like each other? Please, Aerosmith was recently looking for a new lead singer but they wised up and are now planning a tour. Van Halen just can’t stop getting in it’s own way. They had momentum after the last tour and they blew it. Guitar Hero comes out and it’s a joke. They shoould put out new music after the tour or along with GH.

  60. scott says:

Home grown an’ down home..VH chix rule. Cheers to positive vibes and hope! Besides,…still got my guitar(s), ha!

  61. RickieVanWhalen says:

EVH is out buying a clamp for a drum set and DLR is totally silent. I’ll take that as news that good news is coming.

For the rest of you: Increase your dosage

    :-)

  62. ImTheOne says:

    How about this:

    1. Ed’s doing well and obviously jamming, at least they need gear for drums…
    2. He loves to play with Wolfie, and most likely wants to continue doing that
    3. Wolfie digs classic VH with Dave
    4. Last time I looked Ed, Alex, Wolfie and Dave announced to be a band and Ed and Dave seemed to get along
    5. No one announced they broke up or Dave is out, yet
    6. They already have almost an album completed with Dave from last time they tried with him before the reunion, so they are already half way there…

Call me an optimist, but to me that sounds as if the odds for a new VH album in 2010 are not that bad as people here think.

  63. Tommy Boy says:

You are the definition of optimism bro! Love it!

  64. Steve says:

Why are soo many people ruling NO VH album for 2010 when it is only the beginning of March? There will be an announcement before the end of July. Mark my words

  65. Geddy Lee Roth says:

    Tommy Boy!

Like your bass player list…would like to add Cliff Burton and are ya ready to puke?…If you can choose Sting I give you…John Taylor of Duran Duran/Power Station…horrible music I know but his bass chops are smokin’ (steve harris w Ed…odd)

…Mikey is the shit and is the most under appreciated bassist of all time. BOTTOM LINE.

  66. Rich says:

If this site is any reflection on the VH fan-base at large, then its sad to see so many of us in disarray. Some people just want to start “Dave vs Sam” arguments, which is always pretty stupid. Some people just want to bash Eddie – why? Some people bash Sam – did he do anything wrong? Others bash anything they can because it makes them feel better. Why there can’t be more love for this band I have no idea. Yeah, okay we haven’t heard a lot from them. They could’ve released some more material, probably.

Is there a Led Zeppelin News Desk where people moan about Page and Plant as much as Dave/Sam and Eddie? Zeppelin were like the rock-precursor to Van Halen but they were only around for about 12 years – not 30! Eddie does probably regret that long stint of inactivity between 99 and 2004. But he can’t go back and change the past, and I bet everytime he looks back he sees people saying how shite VH3 was, or how the 04 tour was rubbish, or how the new songs on BOBW were lame. I mean, yeah maybe it is a bit childish. Everyone has a bad day now and then, but people still saw him with Gary and people still bought the last Greatest Hits and people still saw him on tour in 2004, and then again in 2007.

There is a lot of hate for Edward and I guess this is why – fans constantly go see him and feel like they “aren’t rewarded” with anything back. Van Halen were around for years and years, not every band can be like Aerosmith or Bon Jovi and constantly make new music every few years. I mean, eventually even AC/DC came out with a new album, but that was after a good what, 6, 8, 10 years?

If they do release new music or not, at least nobody in Van Halen is dead. They’re all alive, happy, healthy. Bitch all you want but I’d rather Edward be live and kicking behind closed doors then 6 feet under with a few years of decay on him.

Van Halen – its like a marriage. It changes your life, for better for worse, rich or poor, sickness or health…you can always look back and appreciate what you had, and theres nothing stopping you from appreciating it now.

    Peace.

  67. ImTheOne says:

Hey Rich, I’m feeling you, this site is a sad state of affairs, and referring to your other post, liking the Haggar years doesn’t make you less of a fan. I think the thing is that, although on the surface looking similar, Van Halen became something completely different with Sam, which was heartbreaking to see for some (including me). Kind of like your best friend marrying the wrong woman and becoming completely domesticated. Anyway, I’m not saying you can’t equally like Van Hagger, in such case, we just look at things differently (and let’s not go through all the “arguments” again why and how, I’m with you on that). And I don’t totally dislike Van Hagger, I listen to them once in a while and enjoy them for what they are, but sorry, that’s not Van Halen to me, although the guitar sounds remotely similar. Fact is now Sam is out of Van Halen, and until further information to the contrary, Dave is back in. That’s great news for some (including me). All the others have some reason to be happy, too, because they have Chickenfoot with Sam and Mike. However, in addition to voicing their excitement, which they are welcome to do (and I’m not against Chickenfoot coverage on this site, although I personally couldn’t care less) there is always these cheap shots at Ed, starting from the man, Sam himself. And then, if you say hey that’s not cool you are labeled an “idiot” or “hater”.

  68. scott says:

    Hey man, don’t blame sam.

“Good to see Mike happy, it’s a shame his not in VH anymore, and that the CF music is lame”…..first 2 things -> okay !but “for the lame CF music” : i still like the Album very mucho !

  70. Lisa says:

When I met VH for the first time in ’98 at the autograph signing in Toronto, Mike was the first and only one to reach out, grab my hand and say a few words. Alex, Gary and Eddie barely said much if anything. For me, someone who has been and always will be a big fan of EVH, it was rather disappointing. Mike was a very integral part of VH and it simply isn’t (or wasn’t) the same without him!

  71. Canes_fan5150 says:

Hey everyone. Should I buy an evh Frankie humbucker or a Seymour duncan 59 trembucker?

  72. scott says:

Look, obviously we all love VH and are frustrated right now. But wasn’t it Roth that quit at their zenith because he thought he was the shit?! Ever since, he’s been trying to get back in. And they have that certain chemistry that IS VH. So whatever, they forged ahead with Sam who probably was the best choice, and good for Ed in many ways. A different VH for sure, but they had a good thing going. Then fkn RAY DANIELS gets involved, and we all know Ed’s got alcohol issues. But it was DANIELS who pressured VH to do that stupid twister thing, when they should have took time off to chill after the BALANCE tour. Which quite frankly Ed and company were kicking major ass during. The toronto gig of the BALANCE tour was amazing, and they appeared to be doing great! Check it on you tube if you haven’t seen it. If I was Sam about to have a kid, I would’ve been pissed too about alot a things. And it was DANIELS that had the dumb idea about getting CHERONE in VH. Worst idea I have ever heard! When I heard that rumour leak for the first time I shook my head in dissapointment, as most of you probably did. I’m sure Gary is a good guy, but not for VH. So after that VH3 fiasco,(which has great playing and writing, the singing and lyrics just sucked-as far as fitting VH-most would agree)Sammy swallows his pride, calls Al, they get back together for the 2004 thing. Eddie’s drinking was outta control, no suprise that didn’t work out. So everyone makes mistakes, all is forgiven, we still love VH. They got Dave back, went out and kicked ass most of the tour, at least the 2 shows I saw anyway, gave the fans what they wanted and packed in the classic tunes we have been craving years for. What more could we want? New music…we just have to wait and see. Mike and Sam are great too, and they are happy and producing product. Daniels is out, thank god. It is what it is, the past is the past. Let’s just be happy for all of them. Glad Ed’s sober, and he and Al get to play with Wolfgang, that was really cool to see during the tour. The kid is young so give him a break. The chemistry is still there with Dave. Patience, my fellow Van Halenites…peace. Look forward, hope forward.

No news is good news in Van Halen.

“You can only step in the same river once.”

Glory days are over. So are the post-glory days. There’s no reliving them. Even if VH puts something new out this year, the vast majority will hate it. Ed’s in a rock and a hard place. He gets criticized for not putting out new music-albeit somewhat fairly as he all but said something new would surface (at some point). If he takes the plunge and puts something out, he’ll get crucified that it either sounds dated (if he tries to replicate the sound of any of the early albums) or that ‘this 2010 version’ is a weak reminder of a band that used to kick ass. Plus, to get DLR to sound anything like his former self, they’ll need studio trickery that will push them into the ‘over produced’ category that nullifies what early VH was largely know for. Again, damned if he does, damned if he doesn’t.

Depending on how important the VH (band) legacy is to him, he’s better off not putting out anything new. If he does, he’ll face the nostalgia band argument/criticism no matter what the album sounds like.

The only wildcard is how much he wants to go through the whole rigamarole (record, press conf, tour/travel, etc.) with Wolfie. If it turns out that that is the most important thing to him, he may throw caution to the wind and put out something ‘classic sounding’ and ignore the rest of the bullshit.

If we haven’t heard anything by summer, I’ll think we’ll have our answer.

  75. Tommy Boy says:

    Geddy Lee Roth:

Dude, Power Station was awesome! John Taylor does have good chops and Cliff should be on that list. Speaking of PS…that drummer they had from Chic, Tony Thompson was fan-fuckintastic! Amazing sound and power…duh!

    PEACE me brethren!

  76. dirty face kid says:

eveyone please quit complaining, its not going to change anything.,afterall we dont even know if vh still exists.

  77. arthur_bishop1972 says:

And Gene Simmons does NOT belong in the same category as Geddy Lee, Steve Harris, and the others that were posted. He’s written some catchy songs and can hold his own on bass, but he’s nothing even close to John Paul Jones, Flea, John Entwistle, et al.

If you can’t/don’t play with your fingers, you’re limiting how much you can do-and how good you can be.

  78. Canes_fan5150 says:

I need some help. Should I buy the evh Frankie humbucker or a Seymour Duncan 59 trembucker. I heard good things about both.

  79. scott says:

Dude, tone is in the fingers, and your head. Other factors…what kind of wood is your guitar made of, what gauge of strings do you use, what amp, what tubes, what cables, action, how do you eq your sound, pedals, etc…? Do you want high output/modern or more vintage sound? Not that easy to answer.

  80. Canes_fan5150 says:

I am trying for a vintage vh1 sound. I am building a replica of Eds black and white guitar. But with a Floyd rose on it.

  81. scott says:

I don’t know man, lol…good luck! Don’t forget that magic marshall had a lot to do with it, but the sound is in Ed’s hands. I haven’t personally tried the 5150 III yet, but I hear they nail the tone pretty well, in conjuction with the pickup, maybe, but…it will still sound like you no matter what. It really is in the fingers, and we all are different. But good luck. All I know is plenty of fans will be happy to pick up anything VH puts out, and plenty of fans will ALWAYS be there for them! Peace.

  82. dlrevhsh says:

well at least we have a new chickenfoot albulm to look forward to.

  83. RickieVanWhalen says:

    cane

It is much harder to set an sd59 than an frankie. The sound does depend on strings, wood, etc. All things being equal, i recommend the frankei because it is essentially easy to install. Only a real tone whore is going to know the differnce and you can compensate with strings.

  84. No Mas Tony says:

Sammy may not be able to hold a torch to EVH or Satch — but he’s a pretty damn good guitarist IMHO. And he’s actually using his signature “Red Rocker Les Paul”… (or at least it looks like it to me.)

I like that ALL the members of CF get equal exposure too. Chad Smith is one awesome mutha fucka. Not only does he crack me up (mostly cause I can’t help but think of the SNL “Cow Bell” skit every time he plays), but the guy plays with amazing ferocity and engages the audience too. He doesn’t just hide behind a monstrous drum set until the end of the concert — like most other drummers. Mike too, he is finally treated like an integral member of a rock band. Yeah I know; the obligatory “he’s a nice guy” comment. But he is… and unfortunately that will get you steam rolled in the music industry.

I can’t believe that some people can’t appreciate at least some of the songs on the CF album. I’ll admit some of the tunes I could do without (turning left, learning to fly) but the gems outshine the duds. AMEN to Scar, Panama Red and others that can dig their sound without ragging on =VH=. It’s all about the music. And I’m confident that their second album is going to rock mightily… So I’ll drink one shot of Cabo (and no mas) to that!

I AM Glad to see there’s still optimism for a new =VH= album. My 2 pennies is no way it’ll ever happen. I would love to be proven wrong. But Eddie going shopping doesn’t mean JACK SHIT. I’ll believe it when I see “VH4″, “2010″ or what the hell ever it’s called in the rack at Target. Words don’t mean nothing till they’re imbedded in polycarbonate plastic with a =VH= logo. Till then, it’s all hearsay and internet rumors.

  85. Canes_fan5150 says:

Thanks for your advice Scott and Rickie. I am goin to buy me a Frankie

  86. Canes_fan5150 says:

I was just thinking. Any chance Ed is making the D2H to record with? He has always said that he didn’t like to use a Floyd in the studio. Maybe he is trying to get his old thick tone back. Like VH and VH2. Just a thought

  87. Jeremy says:

Well if Mike’s a boring guy, I must be a priest?

I love Van Halen and I love Chickenfoot!

I agree we all need to be appreciative of all that’s music and Chickenfoot is still doing it with Mike and Sammy.

I’m glad Mike’s doing what he loves to do and still has the passion to do it. Just think back to 2004 when Van Halen got back with Sammy and wouldn’t do the tour unless Mike was in?

Shows that loyalty Mike paid to Van Halen still wasn’t enough and it took Sammy to get him back in?

What I’m trying to say is that guys like Mike is the reason why music should be shared and played. He plays his ass off, talks to you like you matter, and goes on his way. Is it an act? I don’t believe so and you can just tell that certain people APPRECIATE the fact that it’s just music and they made a living doing it.

Not once did I ever read about Mike saying he was the greatest bass player or the greatest songwriter. But one thing Mike did and others don’t have a clue doing was that he plugged in his bass, played his parts, sang the backgrounds, partied after the show, and went home. Not out there saying or looking like an ass because it’s the rock star thing to do.

Bottom line is I’d rather have Mike in my band than a few others who forgot what it’s all about and that’s the music.

  88. gman says:

    ooops, my bad

  89. scott says:

No,he uses floyds all the time now. The D2H probably mainly for alternate tunings on the fly. Although it looks like it may be brass or something, which could affect tone a bit.

  90. scott says:

Canes…you might want to check out the “secret” seymour duncan “EVH custom shop” pickup also.

  91. ImTheOne says:

Canes…I recently got myself the Frankie and really dig it. Wouldn’t take the SD59, I have it in an older guitar and it’s a great PU, but if you want to get closer to Eds sound the SD Custom Custom (think its the SH-11) is in my view the slightly better choice, the SD59 is not hot enough. I just put it in another guitar of mine and it’s awesome, too, a little different to the Frankie but equally good, if not better, depends on your ear that day. The “secret” SD ’78 I have not tried, from reports I researched it was kind of hyped as the “holy grail” until the Frankie came out. Now that the Frankie is out, you may find used ’78 cheaper on ebay. However, if money is really important in this, I’d say the Custom Custom cuts the deal, you can get it almost for half the price of the others. Of course if you want something certified by Ed, get the Frankie. In any case, for sure you won’t be disappointed by either of them.

  92. Canes_fan5150 says:

Is that the one that Is like $360?

  93. scott says:

    no..like $140. Google it!

  94. Steve says:

    Rich,

You are right. And I can remember people bitching and complaining throughout all of the Hagar years about all kinds of things. Others of us were just enjoying the ride and music. It’s like going to a Star Wars forum. Why doesn’t Lucas do this? Why doesn’t he do that? Why did he add this or take away that from the remasters etc? Because the fans don’t make the material or have a say in it. The problem is they think they do in some strange warped way. If you don’t like the artists’ painting, then don’t buy it to hang on your wall

  95. surfthis!! says:

sam gave us 10 plus years of van halen.
    dont blame him.

if ed would not have gone with sam it would have been
    some chick. really

    i do blame gary however.

  96. dirty face kid says:

face it folks, wolfie doesnt plan on getting a job at 7-11,ed has a recording studio in his home. of course their putting something together..besides, ed has said nothing about retirement..and theres no way he,ll ride of into the sunset without putting out some music with his son. and best of all.,wolf likes dave, at least he did..

  97. scott says:

..who cares, Van Halen rules, always has and always will!

  98. VH3 says:

When you all were comparing and rating Bass players, Did you forget Rudy Sarzo, Cliff Burton, Flea, Mike Inez, Geezer Butler, Ian Hill, Steve Harris, Jason Newsted, Rob Trujillo, Nikki Sixx, Robbie Crane, Dave Ellefson, Frank Bello, Pete Way, Rex, Duff Mckeagan, John Entwhistle, Brian Marshall, Tom Hamilton,Tom Franklin, Jimmy Bain? you guys need to be a little more open minded.

  99. arthur_bishop1972 says:

Nikki Sixx isn’t that good. He’ll tell you him self, too.

  100. Jor-L5150 says:
