VAN HALEN NEWS DESK

Chickenfoot update: More new album talk / soundboard recordings / new tablature book

Some good news for ‘Foot fans today!

SECOND ALBUM MENTION: First, at the 2010 NAMM show last weekend, Michael Anthony confirmed that Chickenfoot will indeed record another album:

SOUNDBOARD GEMS: Here are two very special SOUNDBOARD recordings that most ‘Foot fans have never heard – Chickenfoot covering “Going Down” and “Dear Mr. Fantasy.” Soundboard recordings are very rarely leaked and these are the only recordings that we know of that are floating around (other than the live songs that are on the Deluxe Limited Edition CD/DVD).

Another reason why these recordings are special is that these were from a February 2008 Sammy Hagar concert at The Palms in Las Vegas, where Chad Smith & Joe Satriani joined Sammy & Mike on stage. These unrehearsed covers were the VERY FIRST TIME that Sammy, Mike, Joe & Chad ever jammed together onstage!

NEW GUITAR TABLATURE BOOK: There is finally an official guitar tablature book for Chickenfoot’s first album!

I wonder if Joe did the tabs himself? I’m excited for the new album, I have no doubts that it will blow away the first.

    All very cool stuff!!

  • Rich

Wow, Eddie and Mike (and Chad) were all at NAMM and yet, nothing between them, no mention of Van Halen, or new material…strange.

I just find it amazing that these two guys were within days (or possibly on the same day) of being in such a close proximity to each other, and yet…the silence remains.

Apart from that, cool, like the sound of a new CF record. Should be fun to see them live again although I hope there isn’t any filler on the next album. The debut was solid, I hope the follow up is just as good.

  • Chopper

To answer the question of no one talking at NAMM, it is all summed up in one simple statement Sammy made during the Van Halen years.
“What is understood, doesn’t need to be discussed”

  • Mark

Is the tablature book just guitar or does it include bass as well? It doesn’t say at VanHalenStore, so my quess would be guitar only.

Might seem like a silly question, but some tablature books do and some don’t.

  • pat

i am think precautions were made to keep them seperated and i am very confident the new chickfoot album will be out before van halens next one and to be honest i really dont care if van halen puts another one out anyway, some things are best left to memory.

  • Pete

Love the new recordings…THANKS VHND for posting this. It’s very cool to have some music to talk about here.

Holy crap, these sound great, and thanks to someone a hell of a lot smarter than me who posted the directions here last week, I now know how to download these and put them on my Ipod.

    Thanks!!!!!!1

  • garysamuelroth

I think that it’s possible that a conversation took place between the two and I believe that they both have reasons to keep it to themselves. Any public display of the two of them together gets everybody speculating, and neither needs any of that at this point. I think we all should let them be.

Also, I don’t think that it is all that strange that there was no talk about VH at NAMM. The show is about music products and Eddie was there to promote his gear, not promote VH.

  • McD’s

Those tracks were smokin’, especially ‘Goin Down’

  • Ron

As far as them speaking at NAMM, if you were at some event where your ex-girlfriend or ex-wife was (or ex-boyfriend/husband) how anxious would you be to go and talk to them?

You’d probably avoid them like the plague.

  • Dooley

Sounds good. This band has a future.

  • ben

Now that’s a funny bald guy, Mike looks 10 years younger than him.

  • roger

let me drop the bomb van hagar is putting something together now they may not tour but they will release something new and i do think they will tour and just put out a new chickenfoot without a tour cause chad us committed anyway vanhagar tour and cd with cf release towards the end of the year

  • Panama Red

Holy S**T “Going Down” was a badass jam! Joe is amazing! Mike sounded good too. I Like hearing that bass. I’m buying the next Chickenfoot album the second it goes on sale.
It was kind of funny, the last few seconds of the “Going Down” recording it sounds like Sammy is looking for Chad and Mike says “He’s already at the bar”. Man, I wish I would’ve been there for that show.

  • Scottso

Hmmm… yeah, uh Roger, I’m going to go ahead and disagree with you there…

  • RA 8 1 2

But how VH would that be if Vh did a new Han Hagar record and tour with Mike. Funny, the reunion everyone has been waiting for with Dave happened without Mike, but a Vah Hagar with Mike. How ass backwards is this band! I f ing love em. I would also love to know where Roger gets his info. I have not seen that issue of the Enquirer yet!

  • Tony

I hope that Chad, Mike, Sam & Satch can all blend their respective talents together with a little more panache next go-around. Last album had some SMOKIN’ tracks but others lacked substance… more like ‘demo tracks’ than finished recordings. Sammy’s voice sounded phenomenal but can I hear him sing something besides “oh yeah!” and “that girl’s hot”?! … pretty much summarizing EVERY song on the cd. I blast that every day on my way to work, don’t get me wrong… Just seems like they can top themselves on a new project.

Eddie VH – quit making sneakers, start making albums. ‘nuff said. Hey, maybe a new chickenfoot will be the catalyst to get the brothers back in the studios… maybe – PLEASE?!

  • halenhagar

Now that sounds like LED ZEPPELIN, why didn’t they use those tracks on the album, or maybe they will use them on the next album, so they wouldn’t be compared to Led Zep or VH.
Great stuff, can’t wait until the next CHICKENFOOT album.

    ROCK ON!

  • halenhagar

Oh Yeah, there will never be another Van Halen with Roth, maybe with Sammy and Mike, but not Dave.

  • Canes_fan5150

mikey kind of reminds me of the actor steve zahn.

  • Pete

I’ll have what ROGER’s having, but maybe just a half order…that shit is whacked!

  • andym

Roger, for the good of the planet, please put down the crack pipe and step away from your keyboard.

A Van Hagar tour??? Sorry my man, only if you create some characters on Guitar Hero Van Halen…available now for the Wii, Playstation and XBox. Buy yours today!!!

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G

I can’t wait for the new CF album. If the second one is as good as the first, then there is no doubt that CF will be around for a very long time. Even with Chad’s commitmnets to the Chilli Peppers, the first album rocked and I have no doubt the second one will rock just as much as the original. Just give us a dvd to tide us over untill the new album is released.

  • The Doctor

Oh yeah, there’s about as much chance of a Van Hagar team up in 2010 as there is a Van Halen+DLR team up in 2010…..ZERO chance.

EVH will of course make a few statements to shill sneakers, guitars and other merchandise branded with the once great VH logo.

  • The Doctor

…whilst Chickenfoot keep on making music. Guess who will have the last laugh when the final history of VH is written?

  • Rick Pride

Vai and DLR “cockhead”. Opening for Chickenfoot. How bout it. While King Eddie sits around holding the furniture down.

  • Rick Pride

You know I can’t help but watch “Long Road to Cabo” DVD and look back with sadness. It’s clear Sammy and Mikey were very much dedicated and proud to have been a part of it all. I’m so happy things are working out so well for them. I love them for the music over the years. I’m glad those two are such awesome friends as they sound awesome together. Most classy guys in the business. Thank God for those two.

  • DiamondDean

Gees the VH boys will miss Mr Bass MA , trust me , they will have to get someone to copy his vocal style , gees n god they wld have been better if MA bass was up the front more often, Eddie bein selfish again

  • Atomic Pete

    @ roger
Do you have any inside info on this or are you just
playing with us?To be honest with all the “about-faces”
in the VH camp I wouldn’t be surprised if you were right.
    We’ll see.

  • http://vhnd Jimmy

    I have an inside.

VH could care less about CF and their music.

More people have been exposed to CF because of this site, not their music. The site did the talking, not the music.

  • keith

Of course the next Chickenfoot album will be great. They have one of the best r’n'r producers, Andy Johns, aka Led Zepplin fame. That’s where VH went wrong, you don’t produce your own band and album.

  • Simon

Keith, I disagree. Musicians should be well capable of producing their own music. Part of the challenge of being in a band, or any relationship, is to make it work.

  • dewlots

ok…sammy was flat on Dear Mr. Fantasy…..whole time….band sounded great tho…good tune

  • Tony

Unlike some other Van Halen ‘purists’, I enjoyed Hagar’s contributions, -BUT- the reunion tour with him SUCKED. Their 3 new songs for the album SUCKED. And despite his & Mike’s friendship — there was ZERO chemistry with them & the brothers on stage.

Pretty much EVERY VanHalen fan I know wants Dave as the lead singer. Shit, even Sammy said that they should do it for the fans. Now Eddie is saying in interviews how he’s reluctant/scared to release new stuff?! WTF!? His last couple songs with Dave, “Me Wise Magic” & “Can’t get this stuff” rocked. (I wish they played them at their last concerts.) Even without Mikey’s awesome bass & background vocals, I’m sure they could make some kick-ass new music. We’re all dying for a new album!!!

And, is it just me, as awesome as it was to see DLR & Eddie on stage together since 1983 (last time I saw them perform), it just felt… I dunno… Dave had some decent energy but appart from that nobody else really looked like they were having a good time or even wanted to be there… Wolfie just looked lost. Like, “WTF am I doing here!?” And I was thinking the same thing. Bleh.

  • 5cents

The reason why VH can’t put out new music is Dave can’t sing at all anymore. I love VH and Dave should be the singer for live shows. However, he does sound like a washed up lounge singer these days. He puts on a great show but no amount of engineering can make that voice sound decent. I wish I was wrong about this but I am dead on.

  • Tony

I dunno 5cent… gonna strongly disagree. I think Roth has a definative voice with great range. Maybe it’s nostalgia talking, but it just sounds right paired up with Eddie’s howling guitar licks. Roth released ‘strummin with the devil’ a few years ago and sounded decent albeit oddly paired with fiddles… and just in ’03 he recorded the ‘Diamond Dave’ album which showcased his voice well. He’s a great studio singer in my mind. And I wish Eddie would lift the gag order so we could hear something out of him! He’s been hiding or something… Maybe he’s hanging off a cliff, driving an ambulance around, doing kungfu or painting his next masterpiece. But the dude can sing his ass off too.

  • Top Jimmy

Unfortunately, I have to agree with 5cents. It’s too bad because I wanted Dave back as badly as everyone else did but he just doesn’t sound like himself anymore. He sounds weird. He can’t do the screams he used to do anymore, but more than that even his singing voice sounds different. He used to be real bluesy and natural and now it sounds like he’s trying too hard.

  • Panama Red

Woah! I just listened to “Going Down” again. Chickenfoot KICKS ASS! Chad almost sounds like a different drummer to me with Chickenfoot. Maybe it’s because he stands out more and he’s playing more aggresively. That’s one of many things that’s cool about the ‘Foot, it seems like everyone in the band stands out equally. Every guy has their moment to shine. But really they’re all shining at the same time because it’s a PERFECT line-up and they all mesh together perfectly. They balance each other out and the result sounds Awesome!

  • Tony

No way! I’ll admit, Roth never sounds as good in concert, but just listen to some of his more recent studio releases… maybe he’s not in his glory days but Diamond Dave still has it! I guess we’re all entitled to our opinions. -Peace-

  • Tony

<— Agrees with Panama Red. They do rock.

  • KTC5150

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY DIRTY DUCK!!!

  • Mark

    Jimmy,

You are a freaking idiot!!!!! This site did not make the CF album go Gold!!!! How about promoting and touring and not piping in sounds but preforming it all LIVE!!!!!

Try making great new music and not sitting on your past laurels!!! You fucking old die hard DLR Van Halen fans have to let go!!

The CF show blew away the DLR reunion and you had to pay what $165.00 for a nose blled seat no wonder it was the largest grossing VH tour ever!!!

    Mark and not Hinding
I love them all!!! DLR, SAmmy, CF but Eddie is Micheal Jackson in denial or is that in disguise!!!

Weird overly talented folks tend to be way out there!!

  • Pete

Now we know that JIMMY is ROGER’s crack dealer…

RICK PRIDE – you said it well man. I can’t add to that.

Chickenfoot is going to have an AWESOME sophomore recording because in a new Supergroup there’s always the temptation to not use any of your best, saved up ideas. I bet Satch has some nasty licks kicking around that he’ll be looking to dust off…

  • Glen Cunnington

that was awesome. i just wished you could hear more guitar! Oh well. Roger the “new album with van hagar” is not happening. if youve been watching recent interviews with sammy, he said that he wouldnt trade Chickenfoot for anything, and if he wanted to he could get back in. Its been 6 years since he’s been out and he probably hasnt aked to come back. Just Sayin

  • FairWarning

Chickenfoot rocks! Another couple of great songs, and I just cannot wait for the new record!

  • KCDagger

I am going to agree with all the dudes that said Roth’s vocals aren’t what they used to be. I was too young to see VH with Roth in the early days and too f@^&ing broke to have seen them last tour. But I will always love Van Halen in nearly every lineup (except maybe Cherone….). And for now, I’ve got Chickenfoot cranking in my vehicle everywhere I go. Sammy is in my opinion the greatest performer around. It’s obvious he loves what he does and he isn’t in it for just the money, like Eddie…ah well c’est la vie!

  • roger

fellows no crack just some killer green ,anyway come on think now there all seen at namm, your right when you say sammy said that vh needed to get the dave reunion out of there system before he would even think of coming back{takin care of}2. eddie would have to be sober ,again done 3.sammy not the type guy to sit around and not tour they (cf)basically have a year to a year and a half to wait on chad to be done with rhcp, they will do a studio album and release it in the fall to dec.its now or never for vanhagar none are getting any younger they will put out a cd and do a summer tour to support it perhaps world while they wait for chad.sammy does like to sit and let his voice go like some others(dave),sammy and mike are all for the fans, look for eddie and al to finally join in on that theory.anyways there you have it till next time spark it up(not the Rock)!!!!

  • Pete

Roger…green or crack, enjoy it bud.

Mike is so happy to be in a working band again. Sammy has always been busy making new CDs and touring.

Why would they revisit dysfunction and inactivity?

Sammy & Mike are happy. Eddie is free to work or not work. Dave is happy to have the $$$$$.

For these reasons and MANY more, Van Hagar is not going to reunite. Hell, it’s far from a lock that Ed will ever record or tour again.

  • Panama Red

Pete – I think someone just wanted to start a theoretical conversation when they insinuated that Sammy was going back to Van Halen.
The sheer logistics of that for Sammy seems impossible to me. I mean he’s recording new stuff with Chickenfoot, then I’m sure will tour with them. He has to have time for his family, which I’m sure is the most important thing to him.
He has to have some time to manage his businesses/charities, and he’s always doing stuff with the Waborita’s in between everything else. Not to mention having time to party in Cabo and smokin out and drinking tequila. lol.
Sammy seems to be able to manage a lot of things at once, but I think being in Van Halen is a full time job and would require most of his energy. He seems happier now, being able to balance everything and not be stressed out by what has become dysfunctional relationships with Eddie and Alex.
Plus in my opinion Sammy isn’t right for Van Halen anymore and Van Halen isn’t right for Sammy anymore. They seemed to have moved into different directions artistically for them to fit together naturally now.
They should stick with Dave and give the fans what they want. A new album with (I was going to say the “Original line-up”) but I guess that’s not gonna happen. But a new album with Dave anyway.
I LOVE Sammy, but those last few songs from “Best of Both Worlds” were the worst thing since the Cherone escapades.(Maybe he didn’t fully get back into Van Halen mode from his Cabo lifestyle mode or something, so it didn’t work right – I don’t know)
I liked the music, but the lyrics and the singing, even the background singing sounded bad and cheesy. I like Sammy now better with Chickenfoot.
If I could take out the vocals to those three songs from “Best of Bot Worlds”and just listen to the music I would rock them out!

  • Pete

Hey PANAMA RED…I agree with most everything you said, except your take on the 3 new tunes on BOBW, but subjectivity is the nature of music, so that’s cool.

I just figure Sammy is about “doing it”, not talking about it, so I just don’t see VH being a fit. I think he’s pretty happy he got to try it one more time, but prefers the view at a distance.

Regarding Mikey, he was itching to go for years, and now he’s got a “working band” to play with, so I can’t imagine he’s itching to ever get back in the VH world of “play a tour, stay home for four (years).”

I figure they’ve all moved on to where they should be in 2010 and I have too.
