DJ condemned for playing Van Halen’s “Jump” as woman leaps from bridge

From Dailymail.co.uk:

A Radio DJ has been condemned by mental health charities after he played the song “Jump” as police were trying to talk down a suicidal woman from a motorway bridge.

Steve Penk received a request from a listener for the hit Van Halen track after four lanes of the M60 were closed while police attempted to deal resolve the situation.

The controversial presenter told listeners on his breakfast show he was playing the song to ‘empathize’ with frustrated drivers, but moments later the woman jumped from the 30ft bridge.

The 30-year-old woman suffered minor injuries, but mental heath charities branded his behaviour on 96.2FM The Revolution ‘in very poor taste’.

Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind, said: ‘Given the distressing circumstances, the decision to play “Jump” was highly insensitive and in very poor taste. Media have a responsibility for their audience and jovialising such a situation could be fatal. People that experience mental distress should be encouraged to speak out and seek help. Yet the huge stigma that surrounds mental health means that many feel they have to cope on their own, with potentially tragic consequences.’

A spokesman for The Samaritans added: ‘It shows a lack of compassion and understanding.’

Some listeners also voiced their anger at Mr Penk.

Lorna Guinn, 42, said: “It’s irresponsible – this woman could have overheard it on someone’s car stereo. I found it pathetic and nasty.”

Mr Penk, who owns the radio station in the north west, has become renowned for making prank calls live on air.

He told The Sun: “The entire area had been thrown into total chaos by a single troubled woman. I was very sorry to hear that the lady had subsequently jumped from the bridge, but relieved that her injuries were minor.

‘If, as has been suggested, the woman jumped because she heard it from a passing car radio that’s unfortunate. But I don’t regret playing it for a minute.”

  • TheTruthHurts

Huh. Maybe he should have played, “I’ll Wait.”

  • Brownsound

…. , and nothing gets me down. ;)

  • Madison

WHAT?! That’s REALLY random, I really hope no one tried to jump off a bridge because they heard a Van Halen song…Jump’s like the happiest song….EVER!

  • Jay

That is friggin HILARIOUS. People are way too sensitive.

  • Dooley

It always sounds good at the start of an NBA playoff game.

  • Van Fan

Should we expect a follow-up article in which mental health experts condemn DLR for writing the song in the first place? According to the VH Encyclopedia, the song was inspired by a similar situation…

  • CrashDavis

    Guy is a loser.

  • Don

geez…. blame it on =VH= HOW STUPID! LOL!!!

  • RA 8 1 2

If this was in America they would probably sue VH. However it looks like it is in England…no?

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G

That is pretty sick. To egg someone on who is not right in the head and play that song, isn’t cool. Does the DJ still have his job??? If he doesn’t, that is a fucked up radio station.

  • phillster

HOWARD STERN talks people OFF ledges,
    This BOOB talks`m into it.
    Whatta Hack!
    STERN RULES!!!!!
    BaBaBoo-ey!!
    BaBaBoo-ey!!

  • Ed

Too bad she lived, one more mental case in the world. I wonder if she has health insurance, or will the rich have to foot the bill with the new healthcare program? They should use this song to weed out all of the mentally unstable vermin-survival of the fittest!!!!

  • Sandman

    JUMP!

  • Reggie Hayse

    Drop Dead Legs

  • chris.omeara

I wanted to “Jump” the first time I heard that song…

  • chris.omeara

And not in a good way…

  • http://drumthumper.net Joe O’Meara

Absurd. Even more absurd to assume that she jumped because she overheard the song on a passing car radio. Especially if you factor in the fact that the police probably had the road blocked.

  • BTD

Holding up traffic and affecting thousands of others hey…”might as well jump.”

  • VHIII_1998_

Hey you, who said that! Baby how you been?

  • Ron

Maybe he played the version from Glee. I’d jump too.

  • Ron

After she jumped, did he play It’s About Time? Or maybe Happy Trails?

Or maybe he had a little more compassion and went with Somebody Get Me A Doctor.

And Finish What Ya Started when it turned out she had minor injuries?

Or maybe he should have just played Fools for everyone involved ;-)

  • arthur_bishop1972

Sounds like the frustrated drivers were on ‘Mean Street’…

It seems ridiculous that hearing the song “Jump” would be what put her over the edge, though I could see how it could be considered in bad taste. However, the song was meant to be humorous given the situation, and it was. Playing a song like that eases the tension more than anything – drivers in a bad traffic jam with no good music on the radio are as mentally unstable as anyone; the DJ did it for them!

  • VH fan

    Only in England!!
So the woman could have heard it playing on a car radio?
It could have been on someones CD player too! What a stupid comment!
Jump is the only Van Halen song available over here in the UK, well at least you would think if you listen to our stations. The last track I heard other than this was ‘in a simple rhyme’ and that was 1987!

The woman was called Jamie, and she was crying.

  • Rich

Wow, you’re telling me they actually PLAY Van Halen…ON THE RADIO…here in England?

That is pretty amazing. I thought that most classic rock here was either Zeppelin or Deep Purple. We don’t get Rush, Van Halen, or any of the good American/Canadian/International bands played on our radio.

The current rock scene isnt so bad….

But I love how this guy was blamed. What was she trying to do, anyway? She jumped and didn’t die, meaning she did this only for attention, and then people like myself and VH fan have to foot the bill through the NHS.

  • http://none Dirty Duck

This is probley not the right time to mention this, but dave did write the song while watching a news broadcast on tv about a guy threatning to jump off a building.

He said to himself at the time: what if someone yelled JUMP?

    And the song was born….

  • Russ

She had obviously given up on any new Van Halen music. We, on the other hand remain hopeful.

  • Russ

You know how some bands go to other countries like Japan (Mr. Big and Gary Moore come to mind) and record material that may or may not make it to the states? If only VH did that and there was some lost album floating around. Just call me the “Little Dreamer.”

  • walteR

Ya gotta roll with the punches…….

  • sammyvanroth

should of played “another one bites the dust” by queen…

  • SCAR

You know that old saying, when push comes to shove, go ahead and jump!!!!

  • Tony

If he really wanted to make her jump off the bridge, he would have played something they recorded with Gary Cherone.

  • The Doctor

Suicide is always funny…..Let’s hope this DJ’s family is touched in the same way. I’m sure he would see the funny side of it if it was a family member of his who took their own life.

  • justin

i know this is bad to say… but a lot of your guys comments just crack me up!

  • Tony

Hey, the lady SURVIVED the ‘jump’ and is probably getting some nice doses of Zoloft. Laughing at things in poor taste is the American way!

  • http://myspace.com/rockwylde KrazyRock

so some lady got mad at the world and hated life again….. hmmm….. well, construction work is at a stand still,so I can’t work and pay my bills, the bank is fixxin’ to foreclose on my house, my electric got cut off, my girl friend left me last week, I ran outta beer an hour ago, my dog is going blind, I can’t get any insurance to fix my busted leg from hangin sheetrock, it’s too damn cold to sleep in the woods right now, and I live in a town with crokied sherif.
    But WHO CARES!!!
    somebody play me Amsterdam palease!

  • Pete

DUCK…the way I hear it, Dave asked someone in a crowd of people “what’s going on”? The person informed them that this jumper had this problem and and that problem, on and on, and after hearing this grocery list of problems Dave said that the person “might as well jump”.

Ironic to recollect that and read THIS story!

  • Glen Cunnington

wow theres alot of songs people are listing, van halens put a song for just about anything

  • RickieVanWhalen

This same story happened in NYC in the late 90s. The women did not jump. She preferred to wait for new VH music like the rest of us. Maybe she lost her patience and moved to England?

  • RickieVanWhalen

I’ll be on top of the Brooklyn bridge in about an hour. Do me a favor and play Hang em High.

  • Diamond DD

Dave actually wrote the lyrics “Jump” after watching some idiot threaten to leap off an LA skycraper and all the hoopla surrounding the event……of course we all know Dave is an eternal optimist and was trying to add humor to a chaotic and dire situation.
