VAN HALEN NEWS DESK ... Because Too Much Van Halen Is Never Enough.

Paiste and Alex Van Halen team up to create Big Ride

Paiste 2002 Alex Van Halen 'Reverend Al's Big Ride' - 24" Ride Cymbal

PAISTE PRESS RELEASE:

The renowned Swiss cymbal maker Paiste announces the 2010 Winter NAMM Show introduction of the 2002 24″ Big Ride.

This special Ride was created by Paiste’s Sound Development team in collaboration with Alex Van Halen, who has inspired drummers over the world for more than two decades with his unique and instantly recognizable powerful and dynamic drumming style in the cult Hard Rock band “Van Halen”.

The 2002 Big Ride is based on the design parameters and character of the Giant Beat series. The finish is vintage 2002 style. The cymbal features a full, silky, powerful, deep sound character, and a sweet, glassy ping over a big, dark and misty wash, making it a versatile Ride cymbal with great crash-ability, a perfect addition to Alex Van Halen’s very own big signature cymbal sound.

As a tribute to Alex’s collaborative effort in the creation of this unique cymbal, the label “Reverend Al’s Big Ride” and a modified rendition of the principal “exterminator” artwork for Van Halen’s 1984 tour have been placed on the cymbal.

2002 cymbals are entirely made by hand in Switzerland using traditional methods that have remained unchanged in over half a century.

2002 Big Ride

Sizes: 24″
Weight: medium thin
Volume: soft to loud
Stick Sound: silky
Intensity: fairly lively
Sustain: long
Bell Character: fairly integrated, smooth

Sound Character: Full, silky, powerful, deep. Fairly wide range, fairly complex mix. Responsive, soft feel with powerful attributes. Somewhat papery stick sound with a glassy undertone over fairly dark and cloudy wash. Very versatile ride cymbal with good crash-ability for classic rock music applications. Developed in co-operation with the legendary “Van Halen” drummer Alex Van Halen.

Order Paiste 2002 Alex Van Halen ‘Reverend Al’s Big Ride’ – 24″ Ride Cymbal from Van Halen Store.

    PanamaRed-

I tried telling people in the 90s that ‘…and Justice for All’ was their last great album, but most told me I was fos. Just because the black album sold well doesn’t mean it’s a great metal album-esp a great Metallica album (which is not imo). It’s overproduced, radio-friendly metal that marked a big change for those guys. They got rich and lost their way (a familiar story).

Can`t help it , got to share my Van Halen history, started when a great friend`s bigbrother were around Bahamas about 80` he brought back “women and children first” it sat my soul on fire and i will newer forget that, please visit Denmark on your next tour;-)

  • Lee h

It’s about time Paiste released a signature alex cymbal , him bonham and mcbrain are by far the most Influential rock drummers of all time !!!!! Looking forward to playing it ,

  • BIG AL OZ

Thank god that Van Halen were peaking in the suffering 80′s!! If it wasn’t for Van Halen being kings in the 80′s life would be a big black hole and rock music would have died. When a Van Halen song blared on the radio or on TV I remember thinking I can hear the Hi Hats, crash’s, ride/bell, snare, kick drums, everything that drums should sound like, unlike most drummers and music in the 80′s the drums (particularly the cymbals!) got buried or lost in the mix. But when Alex came rockin in it was magic, I could hear a REAL drummer and not a drum machine!! Can’t wait to order my Rev Al Paiste Ride!! God bless you Big Al!!

FRANK…no worries about a lawsuit…Al used to coordinate the design of the album graphics, so he probably developed the hammer guy.

    Panama Red and arthur_bishop1972:

Great analysis; This is exactly what happened to both Van Halen and Metallica. I think “And Justice…” was their last Fleming Rasmussen- produced LP.

Funny, although I was a bigger VH fan, I remember Metallica blowing them off the stage at the Monsters Of Rock festival right at the end of Master Of Puppets/pre-release of “And Justice…”. They rocked Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, then VH comes out (OU812) and plays “Feels So Good”… I wanted to puke…

    Duck,no disrespect,but you’re still a youngin’.

  • Bridge

Chris.omeara- I saw that tour in NJ. I couldn’t agree more. To sit on my ass in Giants stadium through Kingdom Come, Dokken, Metallica (a fine set!)Scorpions then finally VH and they played like sleepwalkers. I’ve seen some really good and really bad VH shows. That one was a huge let down.

I`ll be getting one for sure maybe two. This is just awesome I can`t wait…..And remember music is not a competition people.Or a race to the finish. It`s a gift to man kind.

    BIG AL OZ
You got it! Very well said.

  • Pete

CHRIS.OMEARA – you tripped the B.S. detector…Van Halen NEVER played the song “Feels So Good” live, let alone on the Monsters of Rock tour.

Metallica were great on that tour, it was a great lineup, and I respect that in your opinion you may have liked them more. That’s cool.

But anybody with an internet connection and an interest can see that VH never played that tune live, and that you’re completely full of shit on this one.

  • Tbop

I want one made from vinyl with songs on it…

    Any f***in chance??

  • Rich

Pete, he probably means Finish What Ya Started. I think I remember seeing a YouTube clip of them playing that at MoR.

  • chris.omeara

Sorry Pete- I was really baked back in those days… But it was one of those “wussie” tunes off from OU812 & 5150. Thanks for setting me straight..

    “I’ll send a message in a bottle (I’ll send a message..)
Pray for the mercy of the sea (whooooo…) Stormy weather (whooooo…) Feels so gay….”

Yuk! Why didn’t Eddie just join Air Supply?

  • Dooley

    chris.omera,

You’re right, but don’t forget about:

    “I’ll wait ’till
    your love comes down…”

Air Supply would have been all over that, too.

  • TheTruthHurts

    Wait…chris.omeara is full of B.S.?
    WHAT?!?! No! *shock*

I saw the Monsters of Rock tour in Tampa…..by the time Vh came on I was ready to go home… a highlight was the food fight in the stands.

I still use a 24″ Z ride and a 22″ earth ride for playing out.

I saw Body Count open for Metallica in Oakland in ’92 (Day on the Green, w/ GnR) and I thought they blew Metallica away. Ice T was f’in furious, spewing hatred at the LAPD, Darryl Gates, blatant racism, etc. They played ‘Cop Killer’ loud and fast, and without apologies. Most people barely seemed to notice. They also had to play on a smaller stage.

Metallica comes out and plays most of the black album and 50 mosh pits open up, mostly with drunken frat assholes who’d never heard of Metallica until they heard ‘Enter Sandman’ on the radio.

  • timh66

    “Cult” hard rock band?

  • Tony

    [yawn] new shiny cymbal. Yay.
