Top 10 Greatest Rock n’ Roll Song Endings of All Time

Thursday, 17 December 2009

From GuitarWorld.com:

van-halen-14Well, bub, no matter how good the song is, it eventually has to end. The question, then, is: How’s it going to end? A studio fade giving the illusion of a sing-along chorus going on forever in some imaginary world populated by elves? A repeated turnaround? An abrupt, punk-rock-style halt? An unsuspected, off-key chord? It’s possible, of course, that the end could wind up being a transcendent moment in itself. Such is the case with the 10 gems below.

10) “Frankenstein” Edgar Winter

9) “Roll With the Changes” REO Speedwagon

8 ) “Let’s Go Crazy” Prince

7) “21st Century Schizoid Man” King Crimson

6) “Shy Boy” David Lee Roth
Vai, Sheehan. Sheehan, Vai. When David Lee Roth combined the talents of these two stringmen, he unleashed the shred equivalent of a nuclear fission reaction. The furious four-handed tapping makes one realize the importance of science to our daily lives.

5) “Paradise City” Guns N’ Roses

4) “Metal Head” Blotto

3) “Hot For Teacher” Van Halen
Eddie uses his space-age finger slides and tremolo picking to sound like a laser weapon battle from a late-’70s sci-fi flick, while brother Alex runs in place on his double bass pedals and David Lee Roth howls till his heart’s content. You don’t have to be Freud to figure out what pubescent fantasy an ending of this magnitude symbolizes. Orgasm. Oh, my gawd.

2) “Highway to Hell” AC/DC

1) “Won’t Get Fooled Again” The Who

  1. Panama Red says:

Oh man, the ending for Hot for Teacher reminds me of something. I was at this party and we were playing truth or dare. “Hot for Teacher” was blasting on the stereo and it was this hot girls turn. But she is really, like proper and straight laced. She chose truth, and this guy asked her if she ever masturbated. We all knew she either hadn’t or she was going to lie about it. But to everyone’s surprise she said “Yes” right towards the end of “Hot for Teacher”. Right after she said “Yes” David Lee Roth” goes “OH MYYY GAWWD!” Everybody started laughing their asses off. Good Times.

  2. Remember the Prom Queen says:

    “Shyboy” for sure!

“D.O.A.” has one of my favorite endings (as well as being a favorite VH tune)!

  3. Remember the Prom Queen says:

Just too many from which to choose, but “Get Up” gets mad props from Mad Anthony for that nut-wrenching ending note he sings!

  4. freddiegirl says:

    I looooove’D.O.A.’! I agree, R. the Prom Queen….awesome VH tune…:)

  5. Darren from Staten Island says:

I agree with most of this list but I would add “run to the hills” by Iron Madien. I notice there are 2 Dave Roth songs on the list and notta one by poodle head. I also like the way “strawberry fields” by the Beatles ends. It fads and then comes back with the undisenable line “I burred Paul” or “I’m very bored” great stuff.

  6. Barney says:

Van Halen, expecially live, always had the greatest electric endings.

Dokken’s “Turn On The Action” features the world’s greatest tire squeal & car crash!

  7. Andrew says:

Sammy-era had a pretty great ending with Sucker In A 3 Piece….that sucking through a straw sound is legendary Eddie Van Halen ingenuity.

Absolutely no-one, comes close to the sheer volume of innovation in their guitar licks & chops. There isn’t a VH lick on vinyl that isn’t absolutely awe-inspiring.

The only exception might be Why Can’t This Be Love.

  8. Mr. Jimmy says:

    Top Jimmy

  9. Neil says:

The ending for “Hot For Teacher” was actually used on a different Van Halen song from one of their early demos. Maybe one of the hard core fans can help me out. I want to say it was “Babe Just Leave Me Alone”. It actually sounds a lot better on “Hot For Teacher”, Eddie must have been listening to one of his old demos and decided to use that ending…good call on his part.

  10. Spinblastr says:

I like the ending to Chickenfoot’s Soap on a Rope.

  11. Steve says:

I like the ending of Everybody Wants Some. As the song fades away David Lee Roth says “Look I’ll Pay You For it WTF”

  12. Chris says:

I love the ending to “Hot For Teacher”. One of my favorites by Van Halen is “Girl Gone Bad”. They go off! Dave screams and Eddie and Alex seem like the are in a competition trading drum and guitar licks. That song is overlooked, but it jams hard.

  13. SCAR says:

The best ending from a VH song is “Dirty Movies”!!!! Then you have the endings of “I’m The One” “Drop Dead Legs”, “House of Pain” and “One Foot Out The Door”!!! Best beginning from a VH song is “Push Comes To Shove”!!!!

  14. dude says:

This seems like a kind of lame thing to rate! But still, I’ll chime in with “Somebody Get Me a Doctor.” Great ending.

Good one Steve. That’s a great fade out lyric by DLR in Everybody Wants Some!

  15. Chris says:

Drop Dead Legs”, “House of Pain” and “One Foot Out The Door”!!!

The funny thing about those 3 choices are they all fade out. The other funny thing is they are better choices than most of the top 10 in Guitar’s list.

“One Foot out The Door” has some of Eddie’s best playing at the end. I never hear people talk about it except DimeBag Darrell. “House of Pain” has a really fast funk thing at the end with some super quick double bass drumming from Al just like “One Foot..” “Drop Dead Legs” is probably their most underrated song, and it has a great groove at the end similar to “House Of Pain”, but not as fast.

  16. RickieVanWhalen says:

The best Van Halen ending is “Hear About it Later” and what SCAR said!

  17. RickieVanWhalen says:

Do fade outs technically end? Whatever.

  18. Little Nicky says:

I like Jonas – “Keeping It Real”.

  19. Bluesbro says:

I had the same thought as dude, what a weird thing to rate. However I did have a song come to mind immediately, so I guess not so strange after all. Boston and ‘Smokin’ … Brad Delp wailing “Get Down tonight, well alright!”

  20. Scottso says:

    Neil:

The song you’re thinking of is called “Voodoo Queen.”

  21. RONNIE VH says:

i agree vanwhalen,i think [hear about it later] is the best ending

  22. Greg says:

Here’s my Top 10 list on who gives a shit…

    10) Nobody
    9) Nobody
    8) Nobody
    7) Nobody
    6) Nobody
    5) Nobody
    4) Nobody
    3) Nobody
    2) Nobody
    1) Nobody

  23. Neil says:

“Drop Dead Legs” does have that awesome fade out solo where Eddie’s guitar is just ready to explode. Really some of his best guitar playing as far as I am concerned

  24. John says:

    Somebody get me a shot!

  25. Neil says:

Thanks Scottso, I was trying to find my bootleg. I wish Van Halen would rerecord some of those old demos.

  26. Dooley says:

Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl” does it for me.

and Slade’s live version of “Born to be Wild” (the Steppenwolf tune), very obscure especially in the U.S., I know.

and Deep Purple’s live version of “Smoke on the Water”

  27. DLR says:

    Hang ‘Em High…….Great ending.

  28. FAMAC says:

It’s a tie between DOA and Light Up The Sky.

I would favor LUTS because its so terse.

  29. kayser sozay says:

Too many great VH endings to count.

Spinblastr, you’re spot on. The ride out to Soap on a Rope is amazing.

  30. VHIII_1998_ says:

there’s alot of VH songs that have good endings. One non-VH song i like the ending to is Mr Crowley (Blizzard Of OZZ). great ending.

  31. Panama Red says:

You could sit around and think up lots of songs with cool endings. A couple more than come to mind is Hagar’s song “Space Station No.5″ I’ve always thought the way it ended was cool. And to praise VH III for once- that little jam at the end of “Without You”.

  32. surfthis! says:

ronnie montrose and hagar wrote that!
    its a montrose song!
    not just sam.

space station # 5 and early montrose rule.

your momma wears combat boots is great song too.

  33. RickieVanWhalen says:

    Chris

Many on these board will tell you that I have ranted about the technically difficulty of One Foot Out The Door. It is a guitar players dream. It is clearly IMO the hardest solo to play (especially after the drum fill) in the EVH catalog. It also sounds SOOO badass!

  34. Opusthe1 says:

    Romeo Delight’s ending rules.

  35. Bo Sox says:

I used to love to turn up the volume at the end of each VH song, I always thought Ed did some really interesting shit on most of his songs as they fade out. I love One Foot out The Door, but commercially, yes, Hot for Teacher, it should be #1. It is so over the top I love how it ends in a bigger than life sorta way.

  36. Ed says:

The dive bombs of ‘Ain’t talkin’ are a blast! Also the ending of Eruption rules!

  37. BTD says:

I’m with GREG here yawn…zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz! As Frank Zappa would say “Shut up and Play Your Guitar”.

  38. ClubfootKolby says:

Jo Dee Messina, BYE BYE ENDING ROCKS

  39. Keith says:

God I am so sick about hearing the NO news and OLD news of VH. They’re DONE. Retired. Finished. History.

  40. Van Fan says:

I don’t know — a lot of those bombastic, go-on-forever endings (like Hot for Teacher) just leave me shaking my head. They’re so juvenile. Somebody Get Me A Doctor, on the other hand, is great. (And don’t forget Beautiful Girls!)

A Chickenfoot song would never make a list like this (the band is too relatively unknown to most people) but I’ve got to agree that the surprise ending of Soap On A Rope is great. (I always turn it up so I can hear Chad yell, “Watch it!”)

  41. VH Dude says:

Keith – let me just extend my heartfelt congratufukulations to you a$$hole: for being the f’ing prick that just couldn’t help himself and had to chime in with Greg and BTD, the three of you guys should get a room and do what you ladies do best. Why take the time to be a f’in buzzkill? Are you tryin to be funny? Really, shut the FU. All of you.

Panama Red: You win the prize for coolest first reply. Ever. Wish I was there.

SCAR: You are on it my brutha : from One Foot Out The Door to Push Come To Shove – among the most overlooked tune from VH. Seems so easy listening to begin with, but listen to it as it progresses. Damn. Of course it is on my fav VH album. Chris – Drop Dead Legs has gotten so much attention lately and rightly so (can you believe it’s been 25 years?). Even EVH mentioned jamming on it recently. We can only hope…

Makes me feel good when some of you mention specific songs…as if you really – and actually – listen to VH. Sometimes I wonder about some of the characters around here. I’m fadin’ out to One foot Out the Door just now…turning it up to hear every last note…

  42. RickieVanWhalen says:

I love the talk about “One Foot Out the Door”

The best technical and rocking solo Ed ever took! I can play all of the notes but the speed and phrasing… never.

    One foot is pure genious.

  43. SCAR says:

Shit, I forgot to mention “Fools”!!!! That tune is 5:57 of some serious VH jamming!!! That is another very underrated song that does not get credit!!!

  44. RickieVanWhalen says:

If I could interview EVH I would ask the following:

    1) Please explain your approach to playing the solo to One Foot Out The Door. Especially after the open G dive bomb. Are you left hand fretting all of those notes? If not, how do you get your right hand onto the fretboard that fast after having it on the tremelo bar?
    2) You seem to be singing alot while you are soloing and improvising. How much of what you are improvising do you hear in your head? How accurate is your execution in terms of what you hear?
    3) Can you tell me what songs you have written where you specifically wrote the melody and lyrics?

I would love to know what you guys would ask EVH if you could?

  45. SCAR says:

Obviously, classic VH music speaks for it’s self, so I would ask EVH about the crazy backstage and after parties!!! I could only imagine the amount of drugs and wild women that were with them!!!

  46. Keith says:

“VH Dude” thanks for your juevenille comments, you swear like a drunk sailor or a 13yr old. Isn’t “Dude” from the 70′s. That’s what the comment thread is for Dude. Not all of us kiss the mighty VH’s backside. Sorry that the truth hurts you so much, “dude”

  47. Panama Red says:

Surfthis!- My bad for not giving props to Ronnie Montrose for “Space Station No.5″ Like I’ve said before my memory isn’t the greatest. I don’t have the largest surplus of brain cells.
The last time I heard that song it was on a Live Hagar album, so I think that’s why I was thinking it was Sammy’s. I love those first two Montrose albums, I haven’t listened to them in a while but they made some really great classic rock songs. Anybody who is a fan of older classic rock should check those first two albums out. I bought a couple of Ronnie Montrose instrumental albums later on, but I haven’t listened to those in years. Did you ever see Ronnie’s machine gun guitar, pretty cool.
I always thought he was underrated as a guitar player. Or at least in the sense that he didn’t become a bigger name in the industry. And remember when Motley Crue ripped off his “Bad Motor Scooter” part. I can’t remember now what song it was, I lost interest in Motlety Crue after the first couple of albums.

  48. DLR says:

The One I Want has an interesting ending off VH III

  49. tj says:

why can we all just get along?

  50. jrocks says:

    Darren from Staten Island says:

“I notice there are 2 Dave Roth songs on the list and notta one by poodle head.”

Hey Darren, this is very funny..hahaha

  51. DLR says:

You would think Jonas would make the list…………

  52. Pete says:

Actually, there were a bunch of really cool suggestions here. Both that made the list deserve to be there…the “Eat ‘Em” band was awesome. I also really dug the heavy side of Van Hagar, so I’d definitely throw “Get Up” in there. It was even cooler live…but what great ending wasn’t?

  53. Remember the Prom Queen says:

RickieV.W. and all: on “One Foot Out The Door” – I’m thinking I hear two (maybe three? (barely)) distinct guitar tracks toward the end there. Anybody else?

PS – Thanks for making me listen even more closely to the subtleties! It’s fun to analyze after all these years!

  54. Atomic Pete says:

Are we still doing endings? “Loss of Control”

  55. chickenfoothater says:

The songs all you guys love, eddie recorded fuckin’ drunk and smokin a cigarette.Scar’s got the right idea, shut up and get your buzz on mr.dr.phil and quit being so judgemental.Ya know ya just got off it yourself so stop it.

  56. dude says:

Remember the Prom Queen – this thread has made me go back as well. Fun to check out some of those last few seconds again.

The end of Bottoms Up! is pretty killer, too.

  57. Atomic Pete says:

    @ Rickie VH

Yeah ‘One foot’solo rocks. It’s the first time (to my knowledge)that anyone did a harmonic dive bomb like that on record.

  58. Cam Winston says:

Everyone here, please go youtube “Find the Real” by Alter Bridge & check out the ending. Best vocal money-shot in rock history.

  59. john says:

    for those about to rock-AC/DC……….

  60. RickieVanWhalen says:

    Prom Queen

I think One Foot is drums, bass, synth and lead guitar. I don’t hear any additional guitars there, just the one that I can’t figure out! Perhaps the fact that EVH is playing like he has 30 fingers on this one has us all confused.

After that drum fill he does this minor third chromatic lick on the b string that is beyond killer. It sounds like he is playing a million miles per hour. The opening lick is a blue scale in the 12th position accross 4 strings but the phrasing makes it seem like he is doing it all on one string. He fucking blows me away with this solo.

    EVH is God

  61. David Alexander Toluca Lake says:

    Honorable mention:
    Ain’t Talkin’ ’bout Love
    In the One
    D.O.A.
    Romeo Delight

  62. RickieVanWhalen says:

    SCAR

The ending to Fools is amazing. Good point. I remember Steve Vai stole that ending and used it in a very popular lesson for guitar players called “The Attitude Song”

  63. SCAR says:

Let’s not forget to mention “Outta Love” and “Loss Of Control”!!! Now with all this snow weekend, it’s putting ol Scar in the Christmas spirit – just makes me want to break out my holiday bong and good shot glasses a little early this year (usually I wait until Christmas Eve), crank up some VH/Foot tunes and keep my buzz on until next year!!!! Cheers to my fellow VH fans and people of the Foot!!!! Oh yea, I’m sure the haters have not been forgotten, there is plenty lumps of coal to go around!!!!

  64. surfthis!suckas says:

shite that is right the crue did rip off bad motor.. for kick start my heart!
you called it dead on bro.

i really think if sam had stayed on board he would have been better with montrose. then again he would have never gone solo and ended up as the second vh singer.
sam is always better in a band. be it montrose, the foot or vh.
he just writes better and the songs sound better. same goes for dave of course…

  65. surfthis!suckas says:

fools is fricking insanity gone wild.
that song is ed on crack before crack was a household name.
    wow.

    drop dead legs

and the outro to amsterdam, top of the world and
dont tell me what love can do

    kick major asses in.

  66. surfthis!suckas says:

    beautiful girls!

    kiss!

    who made the kiss sound?

    bet it was dave…

  67. Jimbob says:

Hot For Teacher awesome!!My personal favourite is ‘Hear About It Later’. The build up to the ending is like the world coming to an end is much like Won’t Get Fooled Again. I love it when they cut it and Eddie’s guitar sound and Alex’s classic Paiste 2002 are a perfect match raw power and grunt!! Serious Fair Warning album struts and snarls at ya, WAHT A CLASSIC Fnkn ALBUM!!!!

I say don’t touch it!! leave it with the dust and dirt, no retouching, no need to remaster it or remix, leave as is!! No band and I mean no band has captured the essence and roar power than Van Halen did on Fair Warning!!

  68. Pete says:

ATOMIC PETE – “Loss of Control” had a killer ending, good call…

  69. 95th Ave Poker Player That Isn't Munch says:

The Beatles “A Day In the Life” does even make the top 10?

  70. Dirty Duck says:

“On fire” has a cool fade out….

  71. Russ says:

What about “I’m on Fire”? Where during the fade out Dave makes the siren noises as the band sounds the “Owws”? That was a cool ending!

  72. Matteau23 says:

95th.. good call on Day in the Life.. had that one in mind as well.

For my money the best VH ending is Me Wise Magic. The guitar work in the last minute or so is just epic.. gives me chills to this day to hear it.

  73. Adrian says:

O god best beginning would have to go to “FOOLS” I call it second eruption it is just a brutal attack between eddie and alex,i also love the blues jam tradeoff where you can hear dave talkin to eddie syncing up and makin music rock on =VH=

  74. crazygoji says:

    *coughlaylacough*

  75. Dirty Duck says:

Russ: Looks like we’re on the same wave length brother! ;)

    crazygoji: :)
    …I always think “goodfella’s”

  76. crazygoji says:

    Not to mention, Unchained.

  77. mike69/88 says:

You know, the Red Rocker has some cool endings, including the awesome scream at the end of When the Hammer Falls, Sammy’s little rant about alotta people talkin about what they don’t know about on Sympathy for the Human (and at the very end he says Don’t worry about it),and my favorite, the hidden little gem after the Tropic of Capricorn track with Sammy taking a “hit” in the great outdoors and the little ditty he plays afterward. Great stuff

  78. Panama Red says:

mike69/88- I agree 100% with all of those songs. Love the ukulele solo after Tropic of Capricorn.

  79. SCAR says:

The endings to Aerosmith’s “Sweet Emotion” and “Train Kept a Rollin” are pretty damn cool, as well as the Crue’s “This Ain’t a Love Song”!!! Man I fuckin love Rock N Roll!!!!!!

  80. Remember the Prom Queen says:

This discussion is making me excited to see the 2010 Van Halen tour that Irving Azoff promised. ;)

  81. Remember the Prom Queen says:

    How does one emote sarcasm?

  82. Remember the Prom Queen says:

    http://www.vhnd.com/2009/09/09/van-halen-to-hit-the-road-in-2010/

  83. Cam Winston says:

    Scar,
    ?
Sweet emotion is a fade out.

  84. pushtoshove says:

I think the Van Halen News Desk is doing a great job considering how much News’ Van Halen is making these days. Thanks VHND for making an accessible site that serves VH fans.

  85. SCAR says:

Cam Winston, I’m not talking about the Greatest hits version of Sweet Emotion where the song fades with them singing, I’m talking about about the classic version where they are jamming as it fades out!!! Got to go, Scar’s sexy little helpers are doing naughty things to my tree!!!!

  86. phil says:

    well said pushtoshove!

  87. Kimberly says:

I dunno where else to vent lol…does anyone think VH is actually gonna tour next year? I am not rushing or complaining..I would just like to know if I am waiting for anything…what do you guys think?

  88. phil says:

kimberly, just my opinion but i think they will eventually tour in late 2010 or early 2011. i think they are still resting up after the last tour. eventually something will surface…

  89. phillster says:

FKNA Right!! 10`s gonna be a great year!

  90. phillster says:

Drunkin` spitballin` here, but back inthe Old Daze, not hearing about a band until just before an album&tour was
    the “NORM”.-It “created mystique”-like Zeppelin y`know?
Nobody even knew what they looked like until they saw`em!
Putting something together to blow millions of peoples minds takes time.AS ARTISTS they should be allowed that right.
In this day&age of instant gratification,Some of us(me included)wished things would happen faster.
It`s a world where you can nuke a pop-tart because the toaster`s too damn slow!!SHEESH!!
    I saw the last tour 3 times&can safely say,the “legend” is IN-TACT!!
It might take an old dog longer to bark, but when he does-Look Out!!
    I wanna wish everyone “hear” a “Happy&aHealthyHoliDAZE”
    (&apoligize to those i`ve managed to piss-off this year).LOL
    Peace Out

  91. phillster says:

    OH YEAH-PAYPHONES,Remember them?
Where the F*ck did They go?????

  92. phillster says:

    officially Baked

  93. phil says:

hahahaha take it easy there phillster!

  94. Kimberly says:

Phil– Okay awesome! Haha I am gonna take your word for it cause Van Halen is the greatest band:):) And I really can’t wait to see em again!

Phillster– You rock haha love the post;)

  95. Dirty Duck says:

    Kimberly:

Didnt you say not too long ago that you “knew” there would be VH music in 2010 and that you couldnt say who the source was that told you?

    What happend?

  96. Tim says:

I love the slightly out of tune droning guitar chord at the end of ‘it’s the end of the world as we know it’ by REM.

  97. RickieVanWhalen says:

    Kimberly

YOU are the one that said great news was coming during December. You stated that you knew something but could not tell us how. Now you are asking who knows what is going on!

I do sense that your mouth got away from you! It’s OK – you’re a girl who loves VH therefore… I forgive you but zip it girl. You’re stressing me out.

  98. Kimberly says:

I did find out something from Eddie’s guitar tech!!! Haha don’t even go there with me, that was months ago and things have slightly changed..I dunno how or why, but things are unsettling at the VH camp all of a sudden.

And pleeease excuse me for stressing YOU out lol.

I heard this amazing news and then it all fell thru..so don’t blame me lol.

My mouth did not get away from me. Eddie’s own guitar tech is a legitimate source and things are happening that we don’t know about. Just not as soon as we would like.

  99. RickieVanWhalen says:

    I still love YOU! Kim!

  100. Dirty Duck says:

I just wanted to take this time to wish all of you (yes even the redheads!) a Very Merry Rockin’Christmas and a “kick ass” new year ahead!
If you dont celebrate Christmas than a very rockin’ holiday to all! It’s a good time to reflect on all we’ve discussed and fought over this past year. This way when 2010 hits, we’ll have more to argue about! LOL!
Seriously though….I wouldnt want to argue with anyone else than you crazy cats!
Nothing but the BEST for you and your families this holiday season!

    Love,

    Dirty Duck

PS) Look Scar! No coal! ;)

  101. phillster says:

I could use some coal after the money i pissed away this Xmas!lol
    Next year “SlimJims&BazookaJoe”nuthin else!
    time to smoke some mistltoe
Happy=VAN=Xmas duck&kim&scar&all the best to all the rest,
    bottoms up

  102. meats says:

the ending to “in a simple rhyme,” while sort of considered “growth,” was one of those riffs that had the coolest groove i can recall.
