With a forty-year career as a top rock and roll photographer, Neil Zlozower has seen and done it all, and then some.  Simply stated, if you know anything about music, then you have most certainly heard of “Zloz”. Known around the world for hundreds of magazine and album covers, his images have often solidified the iconic visual images of many music idols and lent the man himself to reach his own legendary rock and roll status.

The most recognized rock photographer from the 70’s and 80’s, Zlozower toured extensively with Van Halen and Motley Crue and in their heyday. These raucous experiences lent to Zlozower’s two previously released books, both aptly titled A Visual History, and published by Chronicle Books in 2008 and 2009 respectively.  Zlozower’s Fuck You:  Rock and Roll Portraits was also released by Chronicle Books in 2008 and features a veritable rock and roll hall of fame of musicians such as Guns N’ Roses, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Poison, and Zackk Wylde flipping Zlozower the bird as a playful celebration of rock and roll attitude. With a studio located in the heart of Hollywood since the 70’s, Zloz is a guy that remains true to his L.A. roots.

His newest release, Six-String Heroes (Chronicle Books), is a stripped down collection of live, candid and studio shots of 150 of the greatest guitar players to ever live. The book is a must have for every guitar enthusiast and anyone who knows one.  The dynamic assortment of players includes Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, John Frusciante, Les Paul, Slash, Joe Satriani, Dimebag Darrell, Chuck Berry, Zackk Wylde, Tom Waits, Ratt, and countless others.  Six-String Heroes features a foreword by Steve Vai and includes text from countless unpublished interviews throughout the book by music journalist Steven Rosen. The December book event co-sponsored by Guitar Center will feature all of Zlozower’s books. Fine art photographs of famous Zlozower images will be on display.

Zloz has invited MANY special friends to the event…with him it’s clear that this could mean anyone and everyone, and clearly it’s sure to be a great time!!!

Neil is as “rock and roll” as it gets without actually playing an instrument…I can’t wait for his next book!

  • http://none Dirty Duck

I second that one Pete! Good post!

“Zloz” has captured some of the coolest moments in rock and roll man! He’s also mentioned that some of the best times of his life was when he was on the road with VH…
    I can only imagine!

    BRING BACK SAM AND MIKE

  • VH Dude

I remember buying every Circus and Hit Parader that had Van Halen in them (the VH photos were plastered on my wall). Circus was my favorite. Neil Zlozower’s name was constantly credited for the best photos. You just don’t really check out the photographer’s name, but glancing at it over and over – it kind of started to stick out. Neil was the best and really got the most candid back stage and off stage photos, as well as on stage.

My wife surprised me by getting an autographed copy for me a little while back. I was truly surprised, because I didn’t ask for it and she really doesn’t buy me stuff like that. I really don’t think she even knew it was autographed. I opened it up and sure enough, a few pages in it is his signature “VH Rules! Neil Zlozower”. Kind of crazy to get excited about a photographer’s autograph – but I was. I’m holding a book of photos from a guy that was there…where every kid in the 70’s and 80’s wanted to be. I’m 40 now, was 10 in 1979, 15 in 1984. I’ll be honest, I’ve bought vinyl, cassettes, and CDs of all the Dave era albums, as well as every Van Halen album since (even III). I was devastated when they broke up in 1985 and then disillusioned when they broke up with Sammy. I’ve stayed loyal but it’s been a tough road for a die hard Van Halen fan. There was a short time when listening to certain albums just brought back memories of the drama. This book brought reminds me of the greatest times and has been even a sort of healing process (yes, I know how stupid that sounds). I’m over all the past drama now and I enjoy listening to it all, from demos pre-Van Halen 1 all the way up to every scrap of something I can find on YouTube now. I’ll always hold out hope that Dave and Eddie will get back in the studio and release a new album.

Get this book. It should be part of your collection. You will regret it if it is ever out of print.

These were the “Good Old Days”…

Im Very Happy I Bought The Book”Visual History 78-84″. Neil Had A Magic Way Of Capturing VH.Let It Be Said That In There Heyday They Were Truly Untouchable In Terms Of Music And Showmanship.

  • Matteau23

VH dude.. well said my man. One of the most level-headed and well thought out posts around here in a while.

You echo the feelings of a lot of us who may have a partiality to one era or the other, but appreciate and respect the brilliance of all VH regardless of our preference. Also hits home with the stuff about certain albums now having a bad connotation strictly to the drama. Should never have happened that way for any of us, regardless of which era you prefer.

the christmas gift dave was talking about must have been the art prints?vh dude,im 42,and remember camping out in my backyard as a kid and listening to wls am radio,in 1979,waiting to hear van halen.i lived over 400 miles away and me and my cousin jim had a peice of copper wire ran about 50 feet up a maple tree for an antennae.those were the days.

  • Dawn

I own and love this book.
I am also 40 and I think our generation has had the best music ever. From ACDC to Van Halen it doesn’t get any better.

  • http://www.vhnd.com Pat G

I’m surprised eddie didnt try to cut Mike out of this book the way he cut him out of VH. But this book still is great and I enjoyed looking at all of the classic photos and hearing all of the other rock stars prasing the mighty VH. I bought the book the day it came out and still read it from time to time.

Great photographer. Great photographer! Great Photogragher!!!

    Great Photographer!!!!

    Neil ZLOZ is cool!

  • VH Dude

Thank you for the kind words Matteau23. It’s been good to connect and hear from so many other Van Halen fans. Especially others that ‘understand’.

Van Halenerd: That was actually a cool little story of yours that gives a glimpse into that time period. Technology was so different, and now we live in a time of sensory overload. Many of my earliest memories listening to Van Halen were on AM or clock radios (mono), 8 track, and of course vinyl. Tapes were crappy and when CDs came out there was that thrill of hearing the Van Halen albums in a different format. As convenient as CDs and mp3 players are, nothing has ever replaced the feeling of buying and opening a new Van Halen vinyl record! You are right – those were the days!

  • Pete

Neil is such a good guy too, and he’s got a great “too much jack the night before” kind of voice. He’s a great photographer, but he’s a great storyteller too. Whoever said he should have his own talk show isn’t far off the mark.

I don’t know shit about photography, but I know what I like. It’s funny why his pix are SO much better than everyone elses. I don’t understand the science behind photography at all, but Neil’s got the shit down.

  • Simon

I think I like not knowing why I like and dislike things.

  • Bridge

Got this book for Christmas last year. Definitely cool. Don’t have it in front of me right now, but I do remember thinking that Dave wrote an amazing forward to this book. Even a blurb from this guy makes me stop and think. It ended with a remark along the lines of “if you had to choose between losing your hearing or your sight, which would you choose? Me too.” I love how this guy writes, sings and draws. Not many people out there that can do one thing good. Hats off Dave. If all in VH has come to a grinding hault again, I would like a sequal to the Diamond Dave cd. Covers of songs that moved you to write good songs of your own. Rock the F on!

  • SCAR

Right on Bridge! I’ll toke to that!!!!

  • redarrow5150
