Chickenfoot on That Metal Show

VH1 Classic’s That Metal Show caught up with Chickenfoot before their concert at New York’s Irving Plaza in May. The first half of the video clip below contains the entire 5-minute Chickenfoot segment, which originally aired on Nov. 7th.

  • Bluesbro

I had the best laugh I’ve had in awhile when Vai said he should form a supergroup with DLR and call it cockhead, and tour with CF. Now THAT is funny.

  • RA 8 1 2

    Cock Head! LOLOLOL!

  • Rick Pride

Yeah that was funny shit. How about when they asked Chad what happens when the Chili Peppers call and he just took off and never came back? LMAO

  • SCAR

They have a great sense of humor especially when Eddie got Sammy with his Led Zep comment. Chad is the life of that party!!! Party on boys!!!!!

  • kayser sozay

These guys are awesome. Loved it when they asked Joe if he had any kids and whether they will grow up to be the bass player in CF. Glad to see Sammy finally admit he should have been slapped for comparing CF to Led Zep. “If you had 12 shots of Cabo Wabo you’d think you were IN Led Zeppelin.” Funny.

  • Bluesbro

And when they asked Joe if he has kids. When he said yes, they asked when they would be taking over as bass player … lol.

  • Jason

Total zinger when Eddie asked Joe if his kid would grow up to be the bass player for Chickenfoot.

  • garysamuelroth

Great segment. I missed that episode. Need to check my DVR settings…

  • bosox

I like that show. Jim Florentine is a riot “You look like a girl I slept with in Highschool”. I am telling you Chad Smith will not be with Chickenfoot for the long haul. Sammy love the spotlight and will want to put out another album soon.

  • mjc

hail to the foot, they have a dvd for early next year.they “SHOW THE LOVE”.

  • Kevin Malone

    Next CF album and tour;

Matt Sorum on drums. Book it!

  • bosox

    Good one Kevin.

  • FairWarning

Vai’s comment was hillarious. I think that Cockhead with Roth and Vai has a better chance at recording some new music than Van Halen and Roth. Come on Eddie!

  • Top Jimmy

    What a bunch of haters.

You can’t stand it that Chickenfoot is not only making good music but actually having fun doing it.

You guys can throw out these stupid Matt Sorum theories or try to look for cracks in this thing but you’re just wasting your time. It’s simple; they’re four friends, having fun, making great music and actually (here’s a novel concept) giving it to their fans. Period.

THERE WILL BE NO CHICKENFOOT ALBUM/TOUR/BAND WITHOUT CHAD SMITH!! I guarantee it.

  • bosox

Oh ok Top Jimmy bands never have revolving members espically members past and presend associated with VH. There will be no VH without DLR oh wait a minute, there will be no VH with out Sammy, oh wait a second, s dave back in? There will be no VH with out Gary, ahhh ya hmmmm ya thats not gonna work ( sorry gary4life). What is predictable is we have not seen the end of the drama that is VH and Chickenfoot. Chad Smith is the loose link and will be the first to drop off. That said I really like CF.
    Signed the hater.

  • Mark

I don’t think anyone is being a hater, people are just a little disappointed that Chickenfoot probably won’t be back until 2011, 2012.

But it depends on how long it takes RHCP to record and tour and the leeway that they give to Chad in regards to playing in Chickenfoot while they are active.

  • Beau

Chad Smith is a riot! That whole band is just great – Tons of fun!

  • kayser sozay

I think there’s something to the theory that Matt Sorum could play for Chad. Chad is going back to do his RHCP thing just as CF is getting really big. They’ve got some serious momentum going right now. If they really wanted to be a serious band, I think they’d be wise to take advantage of it and get right back in the studio while the iron is hot. If Chad can’t/won’t do it, replace him until he can. Sorum is the logical choice given he recently recorded “Loud” with Sam, Mike and Billy Duffy.

  • Adrian

Cockhead hahahahah… nice. But seriously eddie trunk no you don’t speak for all van halen fans man I prefer 07/08 over 2004 van halen any fucking day of the week. If having wolfie is what it takes for the =VH= boys to rock well than god damn come on wolf

  • ben

Funny they just talked about a VH reunion and nothing about CF.

  • Dave

What did Chad mean about Boston being x 600? Is he implying that the fans in Boston were not as into the show as other cities?

  • Keith

Love it ! Funny Shit. More proof the ‘Foot boyz are havin fun. Hey Ed, you havin any fun yet ?

  • el c

Im telling you now, Chad Smith IS in CF for the long haul. I am not saying that the RHCP are over, far from it, but they have a pattern, and I think this may be the last RHCP album (and I hate to say that cause I love em).
So, unlike VH in all current and past line ups, CF are actually all buddies first, bandmates second, so i dont think you are goingto be seeing any prick acts or people leaving.
Like it or not, the CF are here to stay, and I for one are very happy that will happen.

  • VH Dude

Remember just a few short months ago…shit talkers were saying these guys wouldn’t make it through a tour, it was all manufactured, an act, they were faking it and there was no real chemistry. I think the album was supposed to come out and they were just going to fade away into obscurity within a few weeks? Wow, this must be really frustrating for the haters.

Watching this clip really put a smile on my face. Damn they are just having so much fun and enjoying the ride. They are about as down to earth as a rock band can get – as proven by Eddie’s comment about feeling comfortable enough to bring up Van Halen and make some lighthearted jokes at Sammy and Mike’s expense. Think he could get away with that with some other rock stars?? The fact is, the name Van Halen is the stuff of legend so it will always be brought up no matter what. These guys know that. But you can’t bring back the past – so they are moving on and enjoying the present.

I like to think that RHCP are mature and wise enough to realize they should give Chad his space and not feel threatened by CF. No one panics when Flea guests on an album or tour. And who knows what projects the memebers will participate in moving forward. RHCP is an old band now – I also wouldn’t be surprised to see them semi-retire. Chad may have more of a future in CF than RHCP.

I hope CF takes a well deserved vacation and comes back strong with a new album. I’m guessing they are about to release a live DVD (check out their site – something’s about to be announced Thursday). I think album number two is going to be even better. And while they are on vacation…maybe…just maybe…the mighty Van Halen will awake from it’s slumber. I see a vision of the old Japanese Godzilla rising out of the sea…the original Atomic Punk! That’s Van Halen! Where are you Van Halen? Come and save the world from certain doom!

    Fuckin A.

  • Scottso

Once DLR gets tired of waiting for Eddie to do something, he really should get back together with his original sollo band:

    Steve Vai – guitar
    Billy Sheehan – bass
    Greg Bissonnette – drums

Record a cd and then go on tour with CF:

Coming Soon! Chickenfoot / Eat’em and Smile! The “SANS HALEN” TOUR!!

  • BTD

I heard that the RHCP are “having problems”. CF might be able to go right back into the studio…

  • Top Jimmy

Noone will replace Chad. These guys are not stupid and they’re not Edward Van Halen.

They know they can’t replace anyone in this band. I’m sure Matt Sorum is a fine drummer but he’s not Chad Smith and therefore it won’t work. This band is one of those special situations where all the pieces fell into place at the right time. If you change a cog you fuck up the wheel.

They won’t replace him, they shouldn’t replace him and the band wouldn’t be the same if they did. It makes me laugh that some of you morons actually think that they will. It really makes me laugh that some of you are even implying that they should… I guess you idiots really have been drinking Eddie’s “I can replace whoever I want and noone will notice or care” Kool-Aid.

  • el c

BTD I think is on the money. And those ‘problems’ may revolve around Frusciante wanting to have more of a say and do things his way.
I think Chad may have, like all the CF guys (maybe except Joe), been relieved to not have to deal with all the BS that goes on, and enjoyed just gettin up and hittin away.
I love the debut, but I think the next one will be the shit.

  • bennythejet

cf reminds me of the band the firm. nice idea but at the end of the day the fans wanted to see the real show!

  • bosox

Mark, that is what I am talking about. CF is really building momentum and Sammy is a veteran of rock and knows you have to strike while the iron is hot. The fact that CF is on peoples radar is huge, rock is typically a young mans game. Given all the other entertaiment mediums available people can be easily distractd. CF could be un-relevant very easily. If the RHCP tie up Chad for too long I would not be the lest surprised he be driven out, fired or Chad quit out right.

Dave I thin the venue they played at in Boston (actually Cambridge) was small. I heard it was packed but I was not there. Besides they should have played Boston and not Cambridge. Cambridge is all uppiety, way liberal, and old money. Not really CF demographic.

  • John

Vai and Roth supergroup who would play guitar for Cherone supergroup?

  • Matteau23

haha good call John.. it would have to be Eric Johnson right?? wasn’t he the original “other guy” of the G3?

  • Matt

Dave: The Boston show was at a TINY club called the Middle East, which holds 550 people.

  • http://cheeseburgerpicnic.com Skutch

Mike and Sam nailed it on the head. They are having more fun now than ever. Mike is so over his not being in VH, but some fans still can’t handle it.

Top Jimmy, you’re the hater for dissing people that don’t like CF’s music. I’m glad they are having fun, but the music just doesn’t appeal to me, to put it nicely.

  • Shayne

I have the faith…first track Ed and Dave release will drop jaws and give us goose bumps.

Sammy wants to be your Hoochie Coochie man, oh yea, repeated 100 times.

    Well there is two hooks,kudos!

That riff for oh yea is from a unreleased RHCP tune, lawsuit in the works!

    Dave doesn’t wannabe,he is THE!

Glad the CF’s boys are having fun but I hope most of us still have the faith in VH!

Because if you don’t pls go to CF’s website and take these news feeds with ya!

  • Shayne

I am kidding about the lawsuit, but it sure has a RHCP groove sound to that riff, agree?

  • http://none Dirty Duck

I’ll tell you this much: If dave did decide to call up the old “eat em and smile” crew and it went somewhere…I think they would be selling just as well as chickenfoot.
I remember reading a book called ” The Rise And Fall Of Heavy Metal” and Vai made a comment saying: “if the band stayed together and was making music like that FIRST album, they’d be selling out the sahara desert by now”

    I think he’s spot on.

The way many were excited that satriani was in a group playing again, the same would be for us Vai fans…

  • Top Jimmy

    TO BOSOX:

“Strike while the iron is hot”? Are you crazy? These dudes are old and doing it for fun! The fact that they’ve had the success they’ve had is a bonus and I think it’s even been a nice surprise to them. Although that is oversimplifying because they’ve also been doing a helluva job marketing the band.

But even though I’m sure they want to reach as many people as possible, they aren’t some young pop act that has to prove themselves or “strike while the iron is hot”.

After what Mike went through with being booted from Van Halen, do you honestly think they would kick Chad out? First of all, it would be career suicide. Chad is one of the most popular members of the group, the fans would revolt! Second, it would change the whole dynamic of the sound and thereby ceasing to be Chickenfoot.

  • David St. Hubbins

Drummers are replaced all the time – I am sure they could find a suitable replacement if needed. They wouldn’t kick Chad out – they would amicably part ways for his hopeful return down the road. I do believe one of the first posters is correct in this that they would probably want to put another album/tour together sooner than later since it would benefit Mike and Joe the most to have a successful band making money. Sammy has too much money – but I do believe he wants to work now since he is getting old. Wouldn’t he be 63 in a couple of years? If they had to replace Chad, I am sure he would be welcome back with open arms and it would be considered “temporary”.
Once Chad goes back – he’s gone probably for at least a year if not 18 months. They will tour for close to a year on that new album once done. RHCP is getting old, but I think they have at least a couple of albums left in them before they “retire”.

  • Top Jimmy

Seriously, where do you people come from? Are you at all listening to how they talk? They are all equal owners of chickenfoot… all for one and one for all. They will not tour, record or pinch one off without Chad. You’re just looking for trouble that isn’t there.

And by the way, Joe and Mike don’t need the money either.

  • RON

i agree shayne, if you want to talk about cf go to there website and take the chat with you.this is vhnd…dlr and van halen will rock again…so rock on van halen fans..

  • Elina

    Oh lordy.

I liked this show already when I saw the Extreme episode last season, but with this it’s officially my new favourite.

  • bosox

Top Jimmy, I beg to differ of course “strike while the iron is hot” is on Sammy’s mind. Are you crazy?! He is a good business person and knows this is probably the last venture that has the legs to have commercial success. Most successful rock acts have 2-5 great albums then they go south. Above all that he wants to bury VH, rock singers are attention grabbers and never want to lose the spotlight. Sammy and the gang are not getting any younger too. Who wants to see a 70 year old rockstar perform. See any of the “Stones” performances lately, I quote DLR “rockers with walkers”. Sammy will go ahead and put out another album with or without Chad. He is not going to wait for him go produce an album with the dysfunctional RHCP and tour before they put out a follow-up album. Again, I like CF just being a realist. If I am wrong I will be the first to own up.
    - The BoSox Hater

  • Top Jimmy

    Get ready to own up.

  • bosox

Where is Gary4life? I love it when he is one here. Come on Gary, tell us how Cherone will be back with VH!

  • Scooter

Hell, it’s so dammn obvious when it comes to Sammy. Sure he’s having a damn good time with his life. I’d be so lucky to make it 62 and live the life his living. Good for him! It seems like everytime there is some interview with him that we see on this website. There is question asked about VH or he’ll bring on himself to shut down Eddie Van Halen. It’s the sarcasm I always notice. I can read between the lines and see that he’s hurting in some sort of way about his “EX” best friend, Eddie Van Halen. I read an interview with Sammy about a year ago. He said that he hopes that Eddie will get his life together and fight his battle with alcoholism. Like what he and Michael said during there(Van Halen) Rock-n-Roll inductions. And Sammy also said that he’ll always love Eddie like a brother. Now, he acts like he never said anything like that. What the fuck ever! If Sammy & Michael was so damn unhappy during their tenure with Van Halen, then why in the hell didn’t they get out of Van Halen further back then?? I’ve seen tones of videos(interviews) when Sammy And Michael were in Van Halen and they looked pretty damn happy during that time. Been to enough of their concerts to see how much fun they were having as well. Just like they’re having fun in chickenfoot. Good for Them!

Best of luck …Health and Happiness to Van Halen and Chickenfoot. Simply KEEP ON ROCKIN!!!

  • Shawn

It is funny that no one has mentioned Sam’s comment that Mike and Dave would be the reunion and that he doesn’t. I would think that all of you Sammy haters would give him props for that. Long live the Foot.

  • http://cheeseburgerpicnic.com Skutch

Scooter, you are saying what I’ve been saying all along. Sammy loves CF, but will takes stabs at Eddie every chance he gets. He’s like a 12 year old that got dumped by his fat girlfriend. He’ll make fun of her for being fat, but in reality, he is humiliated.

I know I’ll take heat for that, but it’s the truth. I’m glad they dig CF, but Sam and Mike (and Eddie too) all need to get over themselves. It’s only rock and roll.

  • bosox

Oh ya Sammy want to bury VH. He really hopes that VH will fall flat that way he can gloat. Whatever, I like both.

  • phillster

    nice analogy skutch,-Totally right!
“little white lies” was sammy`s 1st single after he quit/fired?.On the “long road to cabo”DVD there`s a point
where sammy starts sayin`”UH-O,I`m,I`m Sorry EDDIE!!!before his band kicks in to a vhgr tune in concert(he did it every time I saw him live too)
In Fact, this whole dissing sh*t started when sammy joined.
    Whenever DiamondDave was interviewed,he would
    #1:DEFEND HIMSELF
    #2:BE HONEST&RESPECTFULL &
    #3:SAY SOMETHING HILARIOUS
With sammy, all you get is”he`s an assh#le”
    SAMMY MOCKS,
    DIAMONDDAVE ROCKS
