RARE “Cradle Will Rock” TV lip-sync performance
Monday, 16 November 2009
Here is a rare treat. A little-known clip of Van Halen lip-syncing for TV in Europe in 1980.
Keep in mind that seeing Van Halen on TV was something that almost never happened back in 1980. And when you did actually get to see a great rock band on TV, it was often a lip-sync performance, which was standard practice, since the TV studios usually didn’t have the facilities to have a band perform live. Getting to see a wild and cutting edge rock band like this on your 13″ color TV was really something!

HOLY CRAP!!!!!!!!
This is 29 years ago.
’nuff said.
November 16th, 2009 at 6:40 pm
This is pretty cool…. It would be ‘great’ if Eddie & Alex could gather up all this vintage stuff and put it together in a box set.. With digital technology being what it is today,, alot of the older footage could be restored… Then put it in a box set of DVD’s !!!!! I mean shit,, KISS and every other band has it.. It is time for VH to do this for the fans….

When I first heard the name Van Halen I thought it was about a van. Somewhere around the middle 70’s there was a mild song about a Chevy van and that was the first thought in my mind when Van Halen came out on the radio. How wrong I was. Van Halen was a Atomic bomb. What must it felt like to be them???? Rock On.
November 16th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
now that’s what i’m talking about. they were the gold standard.
November 16th, 2009 at 7:19 pm
My Monday night was just made! See how perfectly timed everything is awesome syncing haha when they all get together at the end of the solo classic =VH= gotta love. Eddie’s guitar looks really badass too never seen that particular model on film! Love how he fakes that flange intro haha great!
November 16th, 2009 at 7:24 pm
I’m one of the biggest Van Halen fans in the world. They are truly the greatest rock band in the world.
This, however, was horrible.
Other than the fact that it was 29 freaking years ago, nothing really enticing here. Thank goodness technology has improved. This does not capture the awesomeness of VH at all.
November 16th, 2009 at 8:03 pm
I agree with walteR it would be nice if the Van Halens would release a vault DVD or two….hell it would be nice to see the Van Halens to do anything!
November 16th, 2009 at 8:15 pm
Nice Charvel Explorer-style; I love that paint-job; They should reissue that one with the Danelectro-style neck…
November 16th, 2009 at 8:17 pm
I mean Charvel star-style…
November 16th, 2009 at 8:19 pm
That’s the one ESP copied for Loudness shredder Akira Takasaki used on the Thunder In The East LP; Both axes were COOL; The guitarwork on that album rocked, too…
November 16th, 2009 at 8:30 pm
Hey Dave chill out dude! We all know that Van Halen much like The Beatles, The Who and all the other classic groups, always took the piss out of the TV promo gig. Unlike todays artist, they take it so serious it becomes more and more fake, if it isn’t already fake!!
This clip is classic Van Halen at their having a good time best!! When Van Halen arrived they had the total package, amazing cutting edge music, the greatest guitarist of out time, the greatest frontman of our time, a stellar production in concert and the HUMOUR!! They had an infectious sense of humour that resonated to the masses. Every time I watch a Van Halen/Roth clip it makes my day and puts a smile on everybody!!
November 16th, 2009 at 8:50 pm
Interesting how times change. I like the 1:51 mark where Alex is standing up when you can hear him playing on the record.
November 16th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
This is why they are called…..THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!! I saw them on the WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST tour and at the time i was a huge AC/DC fan but after seeing VH in concert they became my no.#1 band!!!!!!!!!
November 16th, 2009 at 9:04 pm
Pete,
Cool, you can add!
I wonder if anyone will be posting video’s of your band (CF) 29 years from now? Hell, how about 10?
Please do yourself a favor, move on, Mike and Sam have!!
And we’re ALL happy for them, you should be too!!
Nuff said!
November 16th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
Check out the ‘loss of control’ video if you haven’t seen that one yet…ha!
November 16th, 2009 at 10:01 pm
That was fun, but I don’t think they really had to lip sync… =D
November 16th, 2009 at 10:15 pm
I still remember when that song came out; I was a junior in high school and we had a VH party the day the album came out. That tour was awesome too. I remember EVH playing Cathedral during his solo, even though that song didn’t get released until two years later. VH was a big part of every weekend during my high school years. I feel really lucky to have experienced the band while they were soaring higher and higher every year with Roth at the helm. This video reminds me of those years. Thanks VHND for posting this clip.
November 16th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
Wow…utterly retarded and yet extremely cool at the same time! Dave actually picked Ed up…hilarious!
November 17th, 2009 at 1:39 am
This is something we don’t see anymore.
Notice how much smiling is going on…how well Mike and Ed get on…
The last part when Dave picked up Eddie was fantastic. You can tell that here, much like the previous “French TV” synch that they just have a lot of fun and roll with it - it makes for a much nicer performance to watch.
November 17th, 2009 at 5:41 am
That was pretty funny.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:35 am
Look it’s Brittany Spears singing……LMAO
Just kidding guys
November 17th, 2009 at 7:01 am
This may not be the best “look” at what was the mighty VH at one time, but I sure love strolling down memory lane with these cats!
Ya know….I’m dead serious when I say that if VH never releases another album I’d be fine. I’d live to see another day man. (Dont get me wrong, if they do I’ll be one happy s.o.b!) This is the stuff I want to see on a dvd complilation. The old shows…the old interviews.. (we all know that dave’s interviews alone, back in the day, could have sold tickets!)backstage antics and footage…vintage concert footage….anything that captures the magic of those old shows. I think the reason many here overlook the roth era at times is because there has been nothing to show for it, but three popular video’s. There’s so much more out there…in those vaults…that we need more than a peek of.
We need the era re-defined….we need alex lighting his drumset on fire in late 79! We need dave’s high kicks, split jumps and stoned humor! We need to see eddie…in his prime shreddin like a mutha while the audience jaws stay dropped through the whole show! Mikey smiling while singing those classic background vocals! It has to happen…it should be done…but i guess it all comes down to: you have to roll with the punches to get to what’s real….
November 17th, 2009 at 8:37 am
I really hope it’s the YouTube-technology that is bringing audio and video that much out of sync
November 17th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Bravo, Dirty Duck, Bravo!
Another perfect comment. I couldn’t have said it any better myself.
November 17th, 2009 at 10:19 am
Here Here Duck, well fuckin said!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:04 am
I love that Star guitar. I wish he would play it on the next tour. They could sell a lot of those if he put his name on it. I used to own a Tokai star - it was cool.
Notice how much this video resembles the Jump video - Dave is doing a lot of the same moves, and Eddie almost completely replicates how he poses during the Jump solo. In Jump though, they made the smart decision to film Dave close up so that his persona became far larger and he could do more acting.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Vintage ‘Halen is great, but I’m an American: I want more!
If Eddie hadn’t cockteased us with comments of “I have tons of material recorded” and the like, I’d be fine with dying without hearing a new VH release.
November 17th, 2009 at 11:30 am
new MUSIC FROM VAN HALEN! heres how i know.1.dave has been dead silent, which tells me that eddies contolling his mouth,so dave must still be in the band..2,there is absolutely no way that ed will retire without recording at least one cd with his son.3,99% of van halens touring is done during the summer months.,so to coincide with a 2010 tour, new music will probably not be heard until spring…but it will come.. remember folks, ed has only cleaned up his act for a short time..and after what happened with vh3, im sure he wants to make sure he gets it right this time..p.s could someone post all the lyrics to me wise magic?
November 17th, 2009 at 11:44 am
This is SCUM-TASTIC! I love it!!!! Bring more on!!!
November 17th, 2009 at 11:48 am
I agree with the duck. Nuff said. Rock on, I say rock on.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:43 pm
Fun to watch, I’m glad I got to see it. thanks for posting, VHND.
On a side note, an old vid I always go back to is the Doors on Ed Sullivan, when the band was told backstage by some hired geek not to use the word “higher” in Light My Fire…and then did. Sullivan blew a gasket and sent the same geek back in to tell them they’d never be on the show again, and Jim Morrison shot back “we only wanted to do it once anyway, cheers!!” The same type of irreverent humor/sarcasm we would expect from Dave.

Me Wise Magic
I know what you’re thinkin’
What you’re thinkin’ is easy to see
I know what you’re dreamin’
I have those same dreams
Wow!
Reachin to the beat again
Lookin’ for a sign
It was right here all the time, time, time, time!
I am you and you are me
(Do you believe?)
Don’t ya trust me?
Me Wise Magic
Ow, baby hold on
(If you could see)
Through my eyes
Me Wise Magic
Ow, hold on
I feel you breathin’
Don’t you trust me (trust me)
I feel you agreein’
I know what you need
Wow!
Don’t you lie
Just you listen thru me
My words at best to you
A fortune coo-coo-coo-kie
(Who are you and where are we?)
(Do you believe?)
Ow! Don’t ya trust me?
Me Wise Magic
Yeah, yeah ow ow!
(If you could see)
Straight through my eyes
Me Wise Magic
A roug Zen
headed your way
You’ll get it
halfway down the interstate
Four days from now
It all goes clear
A Buddhist riff
for your inner ear
(Guitar Solo)
(Do you believe?)
Ow! Don’t ya trust me?
Me Wise Magic
Yeah yeah! Oh yeah! Whoa!
(If you could see)
Straight through my eyes
Me Wise Magic
Whoa-oh-oh!
(Do you believe?)
Tell me you believe
Do you believe?
Do you believe?
Whoa, yeah!
(If you could see)
Me Wise Magic
(Do you believe?)
Me Wise Magic
(If you could see)
Me Wise Magic
(Ooooooooo)

In 1980 Van Halen made an appearance on Italian TV and Dave broke his nose against a strobe ball during one of his jumps.
The place where they performed was the famous, for us Italians, Piper in Rome.
November 17th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
Van Halenerd is right in my book; This is how it will play out in 2010 (or sooner)…
November 17th, 2009 at 4:24 pm
This video was done before Dlr started his training at the jet centre. 1981-1984 were the years when he developed into a jet fighter!! Air roth!!
November 17th, 2009 at 4:51 pm
Didnt you guys hear. The 1983 Oakland show (from the Fair Warning tour) is being released along with a Blu Ray of the last tour in a few weeks. Ok so its not, but wouldnt that be cool?
November 17th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
This is awesome…. This is why we all love VH.
Thanks, VHND.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Dirty Duck - Sometimes I disagree with you but you got it right about vintage Van Halen. Back in the day we’d watch MTV for days or weeks just waiting to see a 30 second clip of Dave and the band - and Dave always had some iconic one liner to share. Never has and never will be a better frontman in my opinion. Dave was as much the show as Eddie whether you guitar lovers believe it or not. I’d be in heaven if the Van Halen camp released a blue-ray DVD box set of ALL the old stuff. Not a few clips and snippets here and there - everything. Nowadays you can buy a movie that has 20 hours of bonus footage - a frickin movie! How much more has Van Halen influenced a generation than even some of the best movies? It would be nice to see Van Halen show a little love and do something like that. I hate to say it, but I’m afraid someone in the Van Halen estate, or even someone that eventually buys and owns the Van Halen brand will eventually do this - long after they and many of us are gone (think Jimi Hendrix and Michael Jackson). Sure would love to be wrong!
Thanks VHND. You set this one up right - reminding us that this was from a different time in history. I remember when other kids had that stupid ass little TV…heavy and about as big as a large shoe box with a 4″ by 4″ black and white screen. Everyone wanted one - it was cool to have a small black and white shitty TV. times were incredibly different - like being on another planet and dimension entirely. When WACF was released, MTV had not even yet been launched. With that said, Van Halen was the coolest thing on earth - we couldn’t get enough.
ROB5150: Thanks for the info on Dave breaking his nose on the disco ball (that’s what I read) in Italy. Supposedely they were filming when it happenned. Never heard of the actual name of the venue til now - so thanks for the little bit of info (always cool to hear something new). Wonder if they actually have footage of it happenning??
Surprised no one pointed out the full name of the song… If you ever get a chance to hear the demo recordings for WACF, check it out. The audio is absolutely terrible - almost difficult to listen to, but it’s cool to hear some of the same songs with different lyrics. And shows you how much production went into creating the final product. Also cool to hear a younger Dave with a somewhat different vocal style than what ended up on albums. Some of the pre ‘79 stuff doesn’t even sound like Dave on the first listen.
Man..if we could go back in time and kidnap the original Van Halen…bring ‘em back to the present! The world would be a better place. Good times, damn good times…
November 17th, 2009 at 6:35 pm
Uggghhh. I would give my left nut to see them with dave. I saw them with sam in 04 but my dad would only take my big bro to see em with dave. Mostly because of them having to fly to LA to see em but also because of flashers at a steve miller concert. And a little bit because he hates VH and tries to get me to not like them. If they tour and dont come to SLC again i will have to give up hope.
November 17th, 2009 at 6:53 pm
ESP still carries their copy of that guitar, it even has the repro vintage Danelectro headstock. It’s on the ESP Japan website, artist series, Akira Takasaki, Random Star model. There are a couple cool paint jobs to boot…
November 18th, 2009 at 3:00 am
seeing this : it’s time for a DVD Compilation !
November 18th, 2009 at 7:07 am
I really just think they need to make some sort of announcement or SOMETHING…no one knows where they are at! I mean Eddie probably doesn’t even read this stuff on here…if he did I think he might try and EXIST.
Cool clip..wish I was around to experience VH:(:(
November 18th, 2009 at 8:17 am
Thank’s guys in VHND.
That’s exactly what we - VH FAN’S - need.
More and more MIGHTY VAN HALEN STUFF.
No chikencrap.
November 18th, 2009 at 9:10 am
There’s 3 minutes of my life I’ll never get back … lol.
November 18th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Don’t forget ‘Can’t Get This Stuff No More’ - another fine tune. It may have been a poke at the VH brothers but it’s great VH with Dave. And while I like the Sammy era stuff too, this is in another class.
‘I had a date with a supermodel …’
November 18th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Yeah, Ferdnand….no chickencrap?
I’m a VH fan, think Dave’s great in his own inimitable way, loved seeing the attached video, and really hope they get it together put out new material and do a tour. I’d go for sure. But CF is relevant, too.
8 of the 11 songs on their CD are excellent (Avenida Revolution, Soap On A Rope and Get It Up, ehhhh..), and their non-nostalgia tour is a success. They are doing what I hope VH gets around to doing in a bigger way. But in the meantime, I’m glad Sam, Mike, Satch and Chad are there. It ain’t chickencrap, it’s all good. There’s nothing wrong with liking a band other than MIGHTY VAN HALEN.
November 18th, 2009 at 9:48 am
Ya know what would be cool? A DVD documenting the recording process of the new VH record that’s included with the music just like CF did! In it we see the process of recording/rehearsing with DLR and the brothers VH w/Wolf - complete with interviews. Just call me the little dreamer…..
November 18th, 2009 at 10:02 am
the fact that the vh camp is dead silent may actually be a good thing.if dave was not in the band we would have heard about it from him or someone else by now.remember how quiet it was just before they announced the last tour!i wonder how long it took them to put together the 2 songs in 95.i think me wise magic is by far their best tune since 84!eddies got the band he wants now,he wil not let us down.
November 18th, 2009 at 11:02 am
van halenerd:
I’m with you %100 on that one.
Let’s say that ed and dave didnt work out. Does ANYONE here honestly think that “big mouth” dave wouldnt be puttin’ his 2 cents in? I mean, when that whole 96′ fiasco went down at the music awards there were two letters written (from dave and eddie /alex) to the public for christ’s sakes! Remember that shit?
Anyway, being a die hard fan of both eddie and dave I think this SILENCE will be GOLDEN! I personally think while chickenfoot is the flavor of the week at the moment, SOMETHING is without a doubt brewing….
It’s really is that simple: When dave is chained he’s quiet,
but, when he’s unchained………
November 18th, 2009 at 1:03 pm
I invoke the Who…
“Let’s get together
Before we get much older…”
November 19th, 2009 at 6:44 am
I own a bootleg of old footage from Europe and Japan and it is awesome but of course the quality isn’t very good. I would love it if they released one.
I also wouldn’t be too bothered if they never released another album. However I would be very upset if they never toured again. I would pay to see the same concert every year. They are just that great!
November 19th, 2009 at 8:58 am
Funny how every update re: Van Halen is about the past…Sammy and Mike are living in the present. It’s time VH and its fans joined them.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:14 am
With age comes wisdom…even in DLR’s case. He has learned to shut up and play the game (no intentional Queen reference). Totally agree - the negative of silence is a positive. There will be new music.
November 19th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Sung to Big Bad Bill (Is Sweet William Now)
Well, I went down yonder in guitar land
Lived 2 cats named Dave and Sam
I wants ta tell ya
Ah, the gig was rough and tough as Dave and Sam would strut their stuff
EVH had ‘em scared to death
When he walked by, they all held their breath
He’s an angry man, sure enough
And then Ed got G. Cherone, and Dave and Sam found other stuff
Ex Van Halen Singers outta luck now
Front man life done ‘em in somehow
They’re the guys EVH used to hold dear
Now the future of VH is not so clear
Once Strong and Mighty I declare
‘Til Ed told ‘em all “Get outta here!”
Ex Van Halen Singers moved on out the door (No, no, no)
Sam’s in Chickenfoot, Dave’s hopin’ for more (Yes he is)
Well he used to go out drinkin’, talkin’ and walking tall
Now he sits in silence waiting for that call
Ex Van Halen Singers you guys did it all
Aw, what about Gary?
(Clarinet Solo)
And Mikey?
Whoo!
I likes that, yeah (”Yeah,” say I)
Ah, y-well, Ex Van Halen Singers don’t worry anymore (No, they don’t)
What the hell – it’s a soap opera tour (Yes it is)
Well they used to hit the stage and do it right
Sam got a new band, Dave flies a kite
Ex Van Halen Singers get it done somehow (Doin’ the Chickenfoot)
Ex Van Halen Singers get it done somehow (Waitin’ for that call!)
Ex Van Halen Singers get it done somehow
Cherone!
Yeah!
November 20th, 2009 at 2:30 am
Wow! That outdid my “We’ll Wait” submission! Good Work! LMAO
November 20th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
I love how Dave can’t even fake a lip sync after being notorious at forgetting words live. LOL. Hell i even like better how Al is playing a kit he wouldn’t even play in reality. At least he’s playing Ludpuke i guess.
November 20th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Great tune!!
