I’m seriously wondering if Chickenfoot’s ‘Future Is The Past’ is dedicated to Van Halen and the VHND.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:25 am
Ed looks good there. He is looking healthy and strong. That is good to see.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:58 am
A little something off the VH path here. I have been a guitarist for 25 years. I remember when you could get a guitar magazine with songs transcribed in it that were difficult to play. I mean come-on, who in the hell needs the tab to “Lithium”?! Give me a break. Kirk Cobain was the most sloppy piece of shit guitarist of his time. I really with these magazines would put something out that has a song transcribed that was a real challenge. How about I’m The One. Or even A.F.U Naturally Wired. Love that beginning. Peace!
November 12th, 2009 at 11:12 am
Does he mention when the next VH disc comes out? Because if he doesn’t, I think I’ve heard enough about: “brown sound”, Marshall heads being run through the variac, and the paper route that paid for his first set of drums.
I NEED NEW VH MATERIAL. THIS IS SAD!
November 12th, 2009 at 11:37 am
Bored. So for fun I looked up EVH’s middle name “Lodewijk”. One site gives the meaning as Fame and war. Another states “famous warrior”. Then I found this:
The name of Lodewijk has given you an expressive, diplomatic, and gracious nature.
Although you have a good appreciation of material values, business ability, and skill in organizing and managing others, your success is limited, at times, by a lack of self-confidence and initiative.
You prefer to work with others and rely upon their support and encouragement.
You have very expensive tastes, and your desires could well exceed your initiative in providing for them through your own efforts.
Personal appearance is important to you.
You are always well-groomed yourself, and you judge others by your own standard.
Although the name Lodewijk creates the urge to understand and work with people, we emphasize that it causes a materialistic approach that frustrates higher humanitarian qualities.
This name, when combined with the last name, can frustrate happiness, contentment, and success, as well as cause health weaknesses in the fluid and reproductive organs.
Hmmmmm.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:39 am
Yep, Ed’s looking healthy…and…strong…and…he’s in love…and…loving life…and…loves wolfie…and…we hear it time and time again…blah blah blah…GET IN THE DAMN STUDIO AND MAKE THAT NEW ALBUM!!!!!!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 12:15 pm
Shyboy…AMEN!!!! I agree with you 100% And where in the hell is DLR? Come-on, lets get it in gear!!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 12:56 pm
Hey Ed, Steven Tyler needs a new gig!!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:12 pm
Yeah..great idea. Eddie needs the influece of Steven “I just fell off the stage and lied about being plowed” Tyler. Aerosmith is a good vibe band…better than the sum of its parts. ST hasn’t written a song without the help of outside writers since 1985.
November 12th, 2009 at 1:13 pm
^ Maybe that’s where DLR is, rehearsing with Aerosmith now that ST is taking a break…
November 12th, 2009 at 1:30 pm
Ed looks healthy as ever! Can’t wait to pick up this issue.
November 12th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
Eddie does look good but I want to see him on stage instead of a mag cover!
November 12th, 2009 at 1:52 pm
How funny that the Van Halen song transcribed is Everybody wants some! kinda what everybody out there is feeling!
November 12th, 2009 at 2:08 pm
I am writing an album right now guys…it’s not up to par with Van Halen, obviously, but if you guys want a copy, I will send it to you…
And did you guys know that Van Halen doesn’t even have a record label? They were dropped by Warner Brothers a couple years back. I just found that out. How will they even put out an album in the first place without a label?
Ryan
November 12th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
I love VH as much as the next guy but I think they are past their prime. Its time to let a new generation take over. Chickenfoot is the future when it comes to hard rock.
November 12th, 2009 at 2:53 pm
Ed looks healthy and well.
Keep it up Ed!
November 12th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
They really don’t need a label Ryan, just a distributor. They can be their own “label”.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:03 pm
If VH ever gets enough material together to fill a CD they won’t have any trouble finding a label to distribute it.
As for Ed looking healthy, he’s got botox and Photoshop to thank for that!
November 12th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
Checkout the bridge on Ed’s guitar… that is different.
November 12th, 2009 at 3:31 pm
Here’s a little factoid for you:
EVH wrote the main lick to Black Sabbath’s “Evil Eye”
Check it out - it is a pretty nasty lick
November 12th, 2009 at 3:40 pm
“All I Want For Christmas is my…”
New VH Album
with..
New tunes from EVH and DLR…
Played thru the old Plexi Marshall
Produced by Ted Templeman
Engineered by Don Landee
I can live w/Wolfie, but would prefer Mike Anthony…
(or they could at least bring him in for backing vocals…)
November 12th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
At least Iommi has been releasing new material over the years. We can hope that Iommi motivated Ed to start rocking again. I think the fans are tired of waiting for something besides magazine covers.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:32 pm
Donn Landee did not pass away.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
What a bunch of whiners. Geeeez! And you call yourselves true fans? Bunch of haters..chill out.
November 12th, 2009 at 4:53 pm
Yes! Steven Tyler In VH. Get back to basics rock.
That would last at least one album. I’m down.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:13 pm
Steven Tyler & Aerosmith sold out as their “comeback” began to happen. Worse than even VH.
If you want good Aerosmith, go buy the first 5 albums + Live: Bootleg.
If you want good Van Halen, go get the first 4 albums. Best Led Zep? first 4 albums…
November 12th, 2009 at 5:18 pm
Steven and Atomic Pete, you guys are right, S.Tyler is not the best choice to take over at the mic. I was throwing some gallow’s humour into this sad situation. All that talent and no new music. Forget the singer, just put out an instrumental, love to hear Ed play.
November 12th, 2009 at 5:46 pm
Carrie Underwood should be the singer of VH….she’s hot!
November 12th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Hey kevinson, the one thing that hair bands and kurt cobain had in common is they both killed themselves.
November 12th, 2009 at 6:49 pm
There is no plan to go into the studio to record an album with Roth. The most we ever got out of Ed was bunch of lame excuses and then we’ll see where we are after that.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:17 pm
I don’t understand why not liking this kind of nostalgia stuff gets you classed as a “hater” or a “whiner”. I’m tired of hearing how Eddie got the brown-sound or how he road-tested his Wolfgangs and all that. Theres only so many excuses he can give for not going into the studio. Janie’s birthday is coming up - holy shit! What did you do for the first 6 Roth albums that all (bar 1) came out a year after the previous! How did Eddie ever fit in an album recording, tour, then work on the next album all in the same year? It really does surprise me how he can’t do that anymore. Or maybe he won’t do it. Or maybe he’s just really covering it all up.
I’m hopeful for a new VH album but I don’t really want to hear about the last 30 years anymore. Is there no future in Van Halen? We keep hearing how Ed has so much music, how he’s going into the studio…this could all just fizzle up like all the other reuninons that Van Halen have tried since ‘96. Nothing good has been recorded since then! VH3 was an okay album, but it was a Eddie Van Halen solo/concept album, most would agree that its definately the weakest one.
This isn’t a rant so much as just a tiredness with this kind of news. I love Van Halen and I like to hear new stuff about them (or even old stuff about them) but theres only so many bullshit excuses Ed can give before fans think it was all too good to be true.
November 12th, 2009 at 7:45 pm
Ed must have a tight leash on Dave. Dave has the type of personality that wants to be heard and seen. The last tour was about 2 years ago? Why doesn’t TMZ go find Roth and ask him if he’s writing lyrics or whatever. I could actually see Ed asking Tyler to join the band for one album. I don’t think it’s that far-fetched.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
Dave, Tyler, Anybody that is upright,,,,,,,,Just get in the studio and bang out some new tunes already!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 8:02 pm
A LITTLE LESS TALK AND A LOT MORE ACTION!!!! OVER
November 12th, 2009 at 8:44 pm
steven tyler and aerosmith should have stop making music over 10 years ago
i mean the shit they put out in the recent past is just garbage
pure garbage
i mean early aerosmith is okay but can not hold a candle to
classic sabbath and van halen.
end of story
maybe zeppelin was better.
the who gets points and so does montrose and ac/dc.
November 12th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
Steven Tyler would not work in VH. Van halen is actually talented and writes their own songs. So unless eddie will write lyrics tyler wont be in the band.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:16 pm
Tired, bored, old crap. I love EVH and the music, but as someone said above there are only so many excuses. I have been following this board for like 10 years, and its’ the same shit all the time. I just don’t even care any more. Rehashed news every few months doesn’t cut it. I’m tired of being led around by the soap opera. I gotta move on, and you guys should too. If he wants to come back to mainstream, he will. We can’t waste our lives away waiting for it any more!
November 12th, 2009 at 9:19 pm
Again, more VH BS., we will never see a new album. Why can’t he just give us a definitive answer ? Yes, No, Maybe so, go, no go. Cant VHND get us any answers ???
November 12th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Snore.
November 12th, 2009 at 9:39 pm
Let me preface this by saying I’m the biggest VH fan and can’t get enough of their 10 CDs with Dave & Sammy. But one thing I don’t understand is why there are so many people here on VH NewsDesk who act as though if VH doesn’t make a new album sometime soon, then they, as a fan, will give up on them.
I mean, IF VH actually makes a new album, what are the chances it could stack up to their old stuff? As much as I loved seeing a few shows on the last tour, and as much as I’d love to see them tour again, I’m just not excited about the prospect of a new album. Does Eddie even have that hunger anymore? He released albums for 20 years straight. That’s a long time. Are he & Dave into the same types of music now? I just don’t see it being anywhere near as good as the old stuff.
Ed’s playing can’t be as innovative as it was long ago (no ones playing can), Dave isn’t quite the ROCK GOD he was 20 years ago (no one is!), Mike’s harmonies would be absent (no band’s harmonies were better), etc.
I think if they do make another album, it would probably dissapoint a lot of people. I think we should be very, very satisfied with the 10 albums and the bootlegs that we already have.
What I’m excited about as far as the future of VH:
*RELEASING THE ARCHIVES from their heyday. That would be SO much better than a new album.
*ANOTHER TOUR. Yes, it would be nostalgia, but nostalgia is FUN and there is nothing like seeing Eddie and Dave together on stage, playing the best rock ‘n’ roll music ever.
November 12th, 2009 at 10:10 pm
Dan R., although i would like to hear a new album, your point was well explained…
November 12th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
There are only two real possibilities for a new album… It rocks ass and everyone says “Wow, this is what we’ve been waiting for all these years!” Or it blows and everyone says “Man, they should have stopped when they were at their peak!” They haven’t released any new tunes with Dave since 1996, and odds are it won’t be much better than back then. Will I buy it? Definitely. Will I regret it? I hope not…
November 12th, 2009 at 10:46 pm
He has to back up this ‘Drop to Hell’ tailpiece somehow, it just cannot be thrown into thin air. A new song has to be produced to demonstrate its capabilities. His starring with Charlie Sheen was a step. I hope at least.
November 12th, 2009 at 11:46 pm
This just shows how THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN have spoiled their fans! They are so good that they leave you beggin’ for more! I can relate to the frustration,i too am ready for a new album and i’ve been waiting for years on a box set of vintage VAN HALEN! Thank god for bootlegs! It does make you wonder why DAVE is so silent! Does eddie have a gag order on him? VAN HALEN fans are the greatest fans in the world and i hope one day we get our wish for dvd’s and cd’s of the no.#1 band in the world….VAN HALEN!!!
November 12th, 2009 at 11:51 pm
Shylock5150….If VAN HALEN release a new album and it’s anything like ME WISE MAGIC we are in for a treat! That was a killer song!
November 12th, 2009 at 11:56 pm
danr,great post.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:35 am
Dan R you are correct. Great post.
People need to look at their history.
Ed has been on a creative downward spiral for 25 years.
I would be suprised if a new record comes out.
I would be completely SHOCKED and STUNNED if it compared
to ANYTHING from the Roth era.
It would be interesting to see all the posts on here
and what everyone thinks of it after it comes out.
Especially all those who think Edward “owes them something”.
Ed owes you jack shit.
You think this is going to be Fair Warning II? Please….
Say he does crap out something for you:
Is that the material you and the other 18,000 at the arena
are going to want them to play?
I suppose at the sold out AC DC tour everyone is demanding
them to play something from the new BLACK ICE ????
Gosh.. when KISS comes to town I hope they play alot from “SONIC BOOM”
Be happy with the great stuff EVH gave us and hope that
there is another reunion tour. Maybe hear some other great
tracks they did not include on the last reunion tour.
November 13th, 2009 at 3:24 am
MICAL VEE, spot on. If the album were to be anything like what happened last time Ed and Dave got together (Me Wise…) then we are in for a treat. In fact, an album full of songs of that quality wouldn’t be too far off Fair Warning. Not quite as good, but in the same ball park.
November 13th, 2009 at 4:39 am
Ed and VH owes fans nothing. I think that we can all agree on that. I know that we can all also agree that VH isn’t what it used to be, and it probably never will be again.
For anyone who saw Van Halen live “back in the day”, it was a treat, and some of it was nostalgic, and some of it wasn’t, but it was all awesome. The shows nowadays are overworked, under-produced, and they lack a sense of “real” fun.
What happened to hanging from the girders above the stage? What happened to the pyrotechnics? What happened to the elevating drum set? What happened to setting guitars on fire? The sets, now, just seem to be worn out and uninventive, and honestly, they’re just a slap in the face.
The lack of no new music is even worse, and you can say all you want that people don’t want KISS to perform from Sonic Boom, but we must remember that they WERE touring in support of that album. Tours drive album sales - it’s an industry fact!
Say what you want about Metallica (Sold out, no good new music, whatever…), but they have gotten it right. They put out new music, they expose themselves in a documentary (which is very good by the way), and they haven’t forgotten how to put on an amazing show because they remember that it is a “SHOW” and people are paying, not only to hear music, but to, perhaps, see something that they haven’t seen before, or to just be blown away with spectacle.
Van Halen has just gotten caught up in the design of a stage. Whoopidee-Doo-Dah! Cool stage (for about 10 minutes)… where are the pyrotechnics?
EVH does insult his fans because he “says” that he’s “working in the studio” (Careful wording), and he expects us to pay an arm and a leg for a substandard show, which, I’m sorry to say, compared to shows of the past, don’t even come close.
Be honest. If you’re not working on new stuff, fine. Don’t lie about it. If you’re taking a break because you want to pursue other ventures, fine. Just say that. Fans are very forgiving and they are very eager to support those whom they admire.
You can say what you want about Sammy Hagar, but the guy does “produce” and he does give back. The man releases a new album every year or two, and he tours a lot, and he offers free concerts, and we enjoy his tequila (which is far less expensive than a Wolfgang guitar or the D-Tuna), and he makes us “WANT” to be a part of his life.
We can debate record sales all day up and down the street, but the bottom line is this… Part of why VHI and 1984 have done so well in sales is because when they were first released, they were released on LP, then they were released on Tape, and everyone wanted the “newer” technology, and then they were released on CD, and everyone wanted the newer technology (again), and then they were released on MP3 with iTunes, and everyone wanted that too. All of those “formats” add up to more sales. The Hagar albums were released around when LP’s were no longer being mass-produced, and when Tapes (honestly) were on their way out. People bought the CD’s, and they downloaded the MP3’s.
Everyone wants to discuss “album sales” between DLR and SH, but they fail to recognize the format change and everyone’s “need” to have the same friggin’ thing on the next best technology (and I’m no different).
How many of us (bad example, but still valid) bought Star Wars on VHS, and then we bought Star Wars on VHS (because Lucas told us that he didn’t want to release DVD’s until ALL 6 were done - liar) when the Special Edition came out, and then we bought the DVD, and then we bought the 2nd Generation DVD because it also included the “original” movie? Star Wars is and always will be popular, but, in the end, It all adds up to sales.
Nuff said - end of debate.
I remember when VHIII came out and everyone was so friggin’ excited about this album and they said that it was great, Gary is great, we love VH, blah blah blah!
Look at it now. We all (I imagine) agree that VHIII is the worst album of the entire VH library. It was an EVH “concept” album - whatever.
In 5 years, when VH still hasn’t released any new music, and when they have toured several more times (blah!), everyone will look at the tours they attended “back in the day”, and the real nostalgia will be in those concerts - not in the ones during the new millennium.
That’s my two cents worth on this whole thing. Hate away…
November 13th, 2009 at 4:58 am
When you say Chickenfoot are the future. I would disagree in a big way. Sammy Hagar is about 60 and the rest are in 40/50’s. Why not let a young up and coming band be the future.
November 13th, 2009 at 6:34 am
They should call the new album,
“Fair Warning: Part II - The Album With No Stupid Or Wussie Tunes”, or
“Hell With Women And Children- FANS First: Eddie Gets Hungry Again”, or
“We Sold Our Souls To Rock Hard Again- One Last Time Before We Get Too Old”
November 13th, 2009 at 6:51 am
or,
“VH II, Pt. II - Reckless Abandon: The Way We Used To Play”
November 13th, 2009 at 6:52 am
You know I’ll be happy with whatever we get. I’d love to see an awesome new album that would rock our socks off but even if we get a “Balbreaker” or “Stiff Upper Lip” I’ll be completely satisfied. We may not get a “Black Ice”. Right off the bat. But I’m gonna buy four copies anyway and fully support my band!! Ed Everyone wants some more!!!! Just be you write whatever the hell you want and I’ll be happy and won’t be hard and criticize you for it!!! I am happy with everything you’ve already given us. Just please no more hating Sammy or Dave my World shattered when you gave Sammy the boot then the prospect of Dave came and never happened and we got Gary. I think I gave up on VH back then I’m sorry to say that. But I was a huge fan. I was broken back then. You gave us balance and I was blown away. I say through the Movie Twister just to hear new Van Halen and then you hit rid of Sammy. I have hear the three new songs off Best of Both Worlds and love them. But let Dave be Dave unchain him and let him spread the word and advertisethe shit out of the new album. And the test of us will catch the World on fire with Van Halen again. You can do it let’s kick some ass Eddie!!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 7:04 am
Do like Acca Dacca and put out four different album covers and make one a limited edition and through in a DVD of the last tour and free Dave go on some news programs do a press release on VH1 classic. And then hit up That Metal Show and Eddie Trunk will help spread the word!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 7:10 am
Ed acts like old acts cannot put out new music after a long break. Look at AC/DC this past year. Huge hit, just not as big as their old stuff, but every AC/DC fan was thrilled with their effort and loves the new music.
The same thing could occur with VH, but Ed would rather make excuses rather than just admitting: “I can’t write anything worth buying anymore, so I’m going to make excuses and become the nostalgia band Al and I always swore we would never be. So suck it up and buy our overpriced tickets for the same concert you saw last summer.”
November 13th, 2009 at 7:17 am
Regarding the “drop to hell tailpiece.” Remember the press conference when EVH and AVH were explaining Dave leaving the band and EVH goes something like “we had to tune down a half step for Dave, and that makes the strings slinky.” And then AVH goes “Yea, very slinky.” Funny, I always thought it made it a bit easier to play. Guess it doesn’t matter that much now huh? At any rate I must agree that:
CF is not the future, but they are nice to have around for the next few years - nothing innovative, just some good, solid tunes in a formula that we like.
Steven Tyler would be worse than Dave.
The pressure is on for EVH - that could be very good or very bad.
Dave needs to surface at some point.
November 13th, 2009 at 8:04 am
Go get Vince from the Crue
November 13th, 2009 at 8:39 am
Russ, what do you mean the pressure is on? Just curious. From his perspective, he’s got a great wife, great kid and millions in the bank. He has zero pressure in his life as far as I can tell.
November 13th, 2009 at 9:39 am
Van Halen is Done!!
November 13th, 2009 at 9:41 am
Ryan - Welcome to the 2000’s!!! Yeah we all know WB dropped VH a while back.
Shyboy - Well-ly said.
Beaker - Yay!!! A new bridge for Eddie’s guitar…yippee!!! Who the hell cares!!!
Chrisomeara - Stop drinking. Not even Santa himself could pull off that miracle. And those album titles? Seriously, what ARE you drinking???
Atomic Pete & others - read the news…Aerosmith is NOT breaking up. Steven Tyler is still there and would never be in VH even if he was free.
Scott - we’re not haters…MOST of us are just living in reality with our favorite band stringing us along.
Rich & Dan R- thank God you guys get it!!! They are dead right in their posts so read them!!!
Get used to these same updates boys and girls…no new VH any time soon unless it’s Eddie rattling off updates of married life and Wolfie’s college choices. Isn’t it funny how NO ONE has heard a thing from David Lee “Big Mouth” Roth since the end of the 2007 tour??? And about that “2010 Tour Rumor” someone posted a while back on here…dates are filling fast for other bands in venues all over the world…VH better really step on it. You can’t plan a world tour in a week or two.
At least Chickenfoot is keeping us happy!
November 13th, 2009 at 9:44 am
I agree, CF is not the future. IMO they are novelty at best. Solid tunes, interesting combination, but nothing I’ll be creaming over 20 years from now.
And the pressure is on Eddie. He’s the only one that’s going to make this thing work. All the talk over the years about how much stuff he’s written and how much time he spends at 5150 laying down tunes…let’s see something already.
DWD
November 13th, 2009 at 9:44 am
The greatness of Van Halen speaks for itself. But along the way we have a lot of WTF’s. History repeats.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:03 am
dave’s silence is not a good sign, not at all.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Yes, release the archives, that’s what we want. Or the so called DVD they were supposed to be filming for last tour. We need something to pacify us in the meantime, yes that would be nice. But I have confidence whatever they produce will kick ass and school every(one)thing. Dave and Eddie are the shit together, last tour proved it again after all these years. Those 2 songs from volume 1 were better than anything VHagar ever did, and they put out some good stuff. But Dave is just…cooler. None of that lovey shit. Maybe all is quiet cuz they’re busy workin’ it up. Or maybe Dave is on one of his adventures somewhere getting lyrical inspirition. Regardless, if ain’t happening with Dave, it ain’t happening at all. I think VH has earned the right to take however long and do what the fuck ever they want. This is the bonus round folks, take it or leave it.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:38 am
I wonder what Ed would think if he read all the dissatisfaction expressed here. If he wasn’t feeling the heat before he certainly would after sampling the expectation here. Yeah, yeah, I know, Ed would never read all this pathetic crap us drama queens keep spouting… but you’d be a brave man to bet against Wolf logging on here.
November 13th, 2009 at 10:46 am
Exactly!!!!
November 13th, 2009 at 11:51 am
Record labels and even distribution are no longer needed to get music out to the fans. There’s this little thing called the “Internet” now. Maybe you’ve heard of it? Bands have their own “Web sites” where they can post comments, pictures and music! Amazing concept! What a world we live in.
Face it, the days of buying shiny little discs with music and movies on them are quickly coming to a close. CDs are so passe now compared to MP3s and iPods (even though the former sounds better). Movies can be delivered via a Netflix set-top box or that “Internet” thang so DVDs will eventually go the way of the dodo too. Blu-ray Disc (and the late HD-DVD) is a still born format if you ask me.
As for a new VH platter, meh. I’ve moved on to jazz.
November 13th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
Wolf…if you log on here, you are the future of
Van Halen, your dad said so, and it’s true.
Switch over to keyboards and get MA back. Everything
else would be driven by events and should fall into place from there.
Maybe I’m delusional, and if I am I’ll admit it. But this
course seems better that the merch blitz and substantive
silence we got now.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:53 pm
I just read the new interview (the mag is on sale at Walmart now). It does NOT sound good;
Ed complains that no reviewer mentioned the 3 new songs on “Best of Both Worlds”, that people didn’t respond when they played them live….. why spend your own money to record when there’s no label to distribute your music….. and people are going to download it for free anyway, and ends with the statement that they might not record anything new.
There you have it.
November 13th, 2009 at 1:55 pm

Ed’s leading us so we won’t know about the new album with DLR ’till we switch on the radio and it hits us in the face (in a good way). DLR has been given a “gag order” or else…
I had no idea years ago that new VH was coming out when out of nowhere I heard “Me Wise Magic” playing on the radio and I instantly recognized who it was playing the guitar.
When I heard DLR & MA on the chorus I almost had tears of joy right there in the McDonald’s drive-thru. I knew they still had it, and I think they do now. But it’s frustrating sifting thru EVH’s misinformation while waiting for them to deliver (VH, not McDonald’s).
He has a tendency to lie, and most of the serious fans know it. I’ll be the first to cheer when it finally happens, but being a VH fan is like being a Kansas City Chiefs fan. After years of support and the same old sh*t, I finally take the position that if they rally, I’ll rally. Unfortunately, neither the KCC or VH has done that yet…
November 13th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
While we’re at it, how would EVH have to spend ANY money to record? That’s BS too, since he owns his own studio and is filthy rich.
If he doesn’t want to spring for tape, we have some pretty decent sounding digital formats these days; Whatever, Eddie…
November 13th, 2009 at 2:57 pm
I’m guessing he’s talking about the costs to hire an engineer, producer, mixing and mastering, album artwork, promotion and CD pressing.
November 13th, 2009 at 3:10 pm
At this point, I think we’re beyond all that;
I know a local band here in town that had raw talent and songwriting skills but no tech skills. I used to repair their tube amps when they went down.
Another guitarist in town who was into production and recording took their stuff and made a CD in his basement that rivalled anything the corporate media are feeding us.
I guess you got me on the promotion aspect, because they never did get famous(partly because the guitar player drank himself into a stupor each day, and they split up), but VH doesn’t need much promotion since people already know who they are, and the new material would hopefully speak for itself.
They could do it theirselves cheap if they wanted, and it would still have tremendous impact. Steve Vai sold 1 million albums himself with $1 per disc overhead. I didn’t like Flexible that much, but it IS possible with today’s technology to forego all the excess trimmings…

@ daveman5150
VH do owe us fans one thing, THE TRUTH!!
Be honest about what’s going on. We can take it.Hell
we’ll even support you. Not recording? No prob.
Not sure if Dave’s still around. Hey, whatever.
Just be honest! Yes they Do owe us that much.
BTW I wasn’t totally serious about the Steven Tyler thing.
Just throwing a name out there so chill.
November 13th, 2009 at 3:34 pm
I hear you Man, those OLD days of Aerosmith were GOOD; All I’d ever heard was “Dream On” plus one or two other tunes.
I remember getting a copy of “Live: Bootleg” from a friend, and it was a revelation of hard blues rock. I heard one journalist remark that in the late seveties, “old Aerosmith was VH before there was a VH”.
The re-forming of Aerosmith in the MTV era was pretty much a painful parallel to Van Hagar reformation to true fans from the old days of both bands. No more raw rock; Just slickly produced corporate commercial crap…
November 13th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
Joe - that quote is posted all over the internet. I will be signing off of this site and this band for good if it is true.
November 13th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
I think Ed gets frustrated just like all the posters here do. The difference is that his comments get put into magazines.
I agree with Chris.Omera that a world class recording can be done cheaply, but it wouldn’t probably live up to EVH standards. The guitar that made him famous cost him under $200. Now, he sells guitars for almost $3k. I think he’s lost perspective.
Still, I’ll be checking this sight daily, buying the shoes, waiting to check out the D2H bridge and waiting for the next big announcement…because I’m still a fan.
November 13th, 2009 at 3:51 pm
C’mon guys, don’t wig out- this is Eddie we’re talking about…
Remember, he ALWAYS lies to the press (and the fans) at key points (like their true age, his “modified” Jose Arredondo Marshall, his battle with DLR, his battle with Sammy, his battle with the bottle, etc. ad infinitum)…
You just wait- We’re all going to be hearing some new VH soon… and you’ll never have believed that John Smith would’ve sounded so good as the new singer… (just kidding)…
November 13th, 2009 at 3:53 pm
So Ed’s whining about the high cost of producing CDs?! Sheesh, Tom Scholtz recorded pretty much all of Boston Third Stage in his basement on an old Studder 16 track and a tube mixing desk. Outboard gear included several beater JBL compressors and a touch of reverb from some unknown piece of gear. Of course, his guitar used all of his Rockman amps and effects. Ed’s got this same ability in his back yard.
Mastering will cost some coin though. And depending on the level of production for the CD, artwork, etc., it might be a big chunk o’ coin for that. Don’t know what pressing a batch of CDs from a glass master costs anymore but add that in there too.
November 13th, 2009 at 4:01 pm
Remember after OU812 when Eddie said he retired from touring, sort’ve like the Beatles? Remember when Elvis said it? Remember the dozen nearly semi-annual Ozzy and Kiss “farewell” tours?
November 13th, 2009 at 4:07 pm
yeah, but I still boil my strings!
November 13th, 2009 at 5:06 pm
Eddie rules. Always will. You guys complaining…what, do your pussies hurt? Awww…..say something good or shut the fuck up. So stupid.
November 13th, 2009 at 6:12 pm
Something good?
Oh, I don’t mind waiting a decade or more for new music
Oh, I don’t mind that they went commercial with the songs
Oh, I don’t mind that they sell sneakers and overpriced guitars now
Oh, I don’t mind that they went from the best hard rock band of the late seventies/early eighties to being a wuss rock band
Oh, I don’t mind that EVH is a control freak & liar who is stringing us along that he might deliver the goods
Oh, I don’t mind, because “Eddie Rules”…
November 13th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
Get a life. You don’t even know Ed. Don’t buy it if you don’t like it. Don’t listen to it if it’s too commercial. Don’t buy the products if they don’t turn you on. There is no best. But we can have favorites. Don’t diss my favorite musician/band! Patience grasshoppers, peace. Tired of all this bashing crappola. Keep it real. Like Ed says in the new interview, ironically this exact type of subject comes up in it, so someone from the VH camp seems to be aware these types of things being said. I can’t bite my tongue anymore. I can’t believe some of this crap some of you complain about. CHILL.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:05 pm
There IS a best-
It’s called Van Halen, Van Halen II, Women And Children First and Fair Warning (plus an occasional tune here or there)…
Read it…
Believe it…
November 13th, 2009 at 7:10 pm
Joe & Karl
That quote better be EVH just talking shit again. It does not read very well for us fanatics that is for sure.
I have a wolfgang, a charvel bumblebee and a fender replica. All with his strings. They plug into a 5150 combo with more effects with stripes on them than I can count. Until I hear new music he can keep his D2H.
November 13th, 2009 at 7:13 pm
then go listen to them over and over and don’t buy anything new.
November 14th, 2009 at 11:13 am
I am not allowed to say how I know..but there is VH coming soon. So stop getting your undies in a bunch and look forward to December:)
I understand the frustration! It is really obnoxious, but when they go on tour again its going to be incredible!! I personally can’t wait..Try to stay positive!! <3
November 14th, 2009 at 11:35 am
I told you so… The writing’s on the wall; That article was a typical Eddie psiop…
November 14th, 2009 at 12:08 pm
Hopefully Ed won’t overuse his wah wah. Gets a little annoying.
November 14th, 2009 at 3:14 pm
Just got my copy, read the article.Forget about new music from VH.He’s happy marketing and teaching his son “Light up the sky”.
November 15th, 2009 at 2:19 pm
Just read mine too. He’s says it all. No new music. We all pissed him off by the pressure over the years and not being appreciative of his creative stuff on VH3, the non ablum songs, etc. Again, read your copy, he says NO NEW MUSIC.
November 15th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
READ THE LONG PARAGRAPH PG 55, It’s all there. In his words. Done. Finished. Bumba Dida, Happys Trails, Adios Amogos. So sad.
November 15th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
You whining kooks are gettin on my nerves. Ed said all along they were going into the studio after Wolf graduated and Ed got married. How fast do you think they can record, edit, and get it out? Then he had to have hand surgery. Ed said all along it would be a first of the year release with a summer tour to follow. Geez!
November 15th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
Screw it then! They have had full careers already anyway!!
Go eat a bean burrito and deal with whatever happens.
November 16th, 2009 at 12:30 am
Two burritos and a root beer float!!!
November 16th, 2009 at 8:23 am
There’s Eddie with a guitar.
I remember when he used to play guitar…now he just sells them.
November 16th, 2009 at 8:55 am
It’s all BS. I love Edward.. ok? But come on man! I read this article and for the first time I am starting not like him that much. I am tired of hearing about his hip surgery and how he played drums before Alex. He complains alot about non-sense. Make an album dude. Get a clue man. Ed…grow up.
November 16th, 2009 at 9:01 am
Pete,
Yeah, I remember when he played guitar too! I just saw 9 shows in 2007 - 2008 and they were some of the best concerts I’ve ever been to! Incredible.
November 16th, 2009 at 2:47 pm
For a man who supposidly hasnt done anything in so long…
I agree with my man Dan R….than you never saw those shows.
Eddie played and played…..unchained.
November 16th, 2009 at 3:17 pm
I think a big hold up on the new record has been Ed’s hand surgery. Can’t make an album with any physical limitations that could effect the speed and quality of his playing. People forget that he has been cleared to play guitar but not to go out full bore yet
November 16th, 2009 at 4:44 pm
Kimberly…
“I am not allowed to say how I know..but there is VH coming soon”
Is it some type of inside info where you’re sworn to secrecy,
or a powerful gut feeling you know in your soul has merit?
Do tell that much…
November 16th, 2009 at 6:48 pm
DUCK…I saw 3 shows on the last VH show. You know what I mean. I won’t explain it to the sheep, but YOU know what I mean man. Any suffering fan of VH-music knows what I mean.
November 17th, 2009 at 8:44 am
The last tour KICKED F’IN ASS!! Every show I saw the audience was on their feet the whole time. 2 hours of the best music ever.
November 17th, 2009 at 1:26 pm
I’ve supported both and all camps uncondionaly thru thick and thin. I have the ticket stubs to prove it.
November 18th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Kim, I hope you are right. I just hope ed and the boys aren’t feeding us all this stuff just to gain interest in the d2h or his strings or something like that.
November 19th, 2009 at 6:40 am
Well if there is “no new music” from ed then thats that!
There is really nothing we can do.
The classic era fans have their albums
The vanhagar fans have their albums
There’s really nothing more to discuss….
Sucks, but thats life…
Be happy with what we DO have and eat em’ and smile!
