“Diamond Dave” video
This is The Bird and the Bee’s video for their new hit, “Diamond Dave”
The Bird And The Bee show their love for David Lee Roth in “Diamond Dave.” Apparently Van Halen’s vocalist made a lingering impact on vocalist Inara George. The try-outs for a Roth impersonator are funny, but prove that “No one can hold a candle - Nothing else is quite the same.”
“Diamond Dave” lyrics, by The Bird And The Bee
When I was a child,
You captured my devotion
I spent so many hours
Exploring mixed emotions
All of the ways you spoke to me
All of the things you provoked in me
I’ll always love you
Diamond Dave
No one can hold a candle
Nothing else is quite the same
Pretty Dave
I’ll always remember
I still carry such a flame
When you left the band
I couldn’t understand it
But I’ve forgiven you
Now that you’ve recommitted
All of the time you spent away from me
All of the missed opportunity
I’ll always love you
Diamond Dave
No one can hold a candle
Nothing else is quite the same
Pretty Dave
I’ll always remember
I still carry such a flame
Come on, Dave
Show me what you got
I can take it
I’ll always love you
Diamond Dave
No one can hold a candle
Nothing else is quite the same
Pretty Dave
I’ll always remember
Diamond Dave
I’ll always remember
Pretty Dave
I’ll always remember
I still carry such a flame

Wish they could have gotten David to show up at the end, after everyone had left. Looks in the door, every one is gone, looks at camera, rolls his eyes, says “Outta Love Again”
September 4th, 2009 at 10:17 am
Dave!!!
You pot smokin’, jack downin’, high split jumpin, girls ass’ grabbin, laughin at everythin’, son ova a bitch! I love ya too brother! LOL….
September 4th, 2009 at 10:33 am
I wish I had those 3:19 seconds of my life back……
September 4th, 2009 at 10:45 am
Sucko. Dave clearly had zero influence on the sound of this music.
September 4th, 2009 at 10:49 am
I liked it. Don’t ask me why.
September 4th, 2009 at 11:10 am
Yeah… Top Jimmy & Rodney… Dave never sang in a style like that before… nope. Never.
September 4th, 2009 at 11:35 am
Guys….seriously?
Relax…
It’s just a tribute song.
September 4th, 2009 at 11:49 am
Dave’s a great frontman, he’s everything Duck says. Sam’s always been better on vocals, but you don’t need a perfect pitch to be successful. Like Brian Johnson with AC DC, Louie Armstrong when he did “Hello Dolly” and Al Jolson long ago. You can be rough around the edges vocally and still be great at what you do…as long as you have the right music to go with it. Dave has that with VH.
September 4th, 2009 at 11:55 am
There should never, ever be another complaint about a Chickenfoot video being posted here. That was uber lame.
September 4th, 2009 at 12:24 pm
kinda funny but i hope this is not the future of rock n roll!
September 4th, 2009 at 12:43 pm
VHND…you already posted this song once, isn’t that enough?
woof
September 4th, 2009 at 12:46 pm
Too bad this didn’t come out 25 years ago. Dave would have made an appearance for sure, and it would have been all over MTV. Anybody else worried by the fact Dave wasn’t at Ed’s wedding…or these rehearsals….or any news period? Ed did mention going to Dave’s house a couple of times a week to “see what he was into” as far as songs go, but nothing since that report.
September 4th, 2009 at 12:52 pm
This song SUCKS!!!!!! How do these get made?
September 4th, 2009 at 1:18 pm
Yes! I thought it was great and very funny. I`m with Duck and Dooley. I like the fact there keeping everthing low key. I`t always quite before a bomb goes off.I`m sure the new music will be just awesome Ed`s got to be on cloud 9 making new music with his son, Al, and Dave.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
and some people on this sight complain about current Chickenfoot news. “it’s just a tribute song” it’s insignificant garbage.
September 4th, 2009 at 1:58 pm
Well, i’d like to sit here and waste my time arguing with this one..that one…50 year old. Whatever…
Could care less! I have a 3 day weekend “boys” and all I’m thinkin’ is BBQ’s, cold beer, and hopefully someone to squeeze by the end of the night!
Talk to you guys in 3 days!
The last fuckin’ place i wanna be is on the internet fella’s!
Later!
September 4th, 2009 at 2:00 pm
That video needed more hot chicks in bikinis.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:03 pm
Quick FYI, Inara George, daughter of Lowell George of the Mothers of Invention and Little Feat. Looks like the “Daves” in the video include Simon Helberg from Big Bang Theory on CBS, and Ken Jeong from The Hangover.
September 4th, 2009 at 2:06 pm
Dave will return. I just hope he will anyway. That video is just wrong.
September 4th, 2009 at 4:00 pm
I don’t know VH fans, this video is kinda lame….
September 4th, 2009 at 4:04 pm
that song is pretty lame. talk about filler to hold us off until some real vh news comes about.
September 4th, 2009 at 5:43 pm
In perspective.
It was nice.
September 4th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
I’m curious what DLR thinks of this. As a Van Halen fan back from the early days of the first album, I found it hilarious even though it’s a different genre of music than some Van Halen fans can appreciate.
I like Van Halen and I like jazz-influenced music too. One does not cancel out the other. Since the earlier live posting of this song, I found out Greg Kurstin was the synth/keyboard player that I always liked from the cool techno-jazz album “Action Figure Party”.
There are at least 5 other excellent tunes from The Bird And The Bee that I listen to all the time now that I discovered them recently on the VHND. No, they don’t sound like Van Halen. So what?
When the new Van Halen album comes out, I’m sure there will at least 5 new tunes that I will love. They aren’t in competition with each other. If anything it’s obvious that Inara is just paying an honest homage to an object of her childhood nostalgia, just like Van Halen has done with cover tunes, or like Dave has done with his vaudeville leanings. I bet Dave appreciated it.
I thought the humor in the video was well-placed. It’s too bad some of the fans musical tastes do not range much past the mentality of the corporate mainstream “cock-rock” radio airplay bands and their obnoxious modern-day counterparts.
September 4th, 2009 at 8:41 pm
Knowing Dave, he would get a real kick out of this!! Dave has a sense of humour that is unmatched. He never takes himself serious, unlike a lot of artist do today!! Just goes to show how relevant and popular Dave is over Sammy!! Dave is worldwide, the greatest Rock n Roll front man of all time. I don’t need a book or opinion polls telling me who is the greatest. People in the suburbs and neighbourhoods will tell you that Diamond Dave’s THE MAN!!! Plus who could give a toss who can sing higher or better? Music is not sports. I love Dave’s voice, he’s sounds like nobody else, can’t compare him to anyone, he’s a complete and unique original!! I don’t hear songs being written about Sammy?
But what’s more interesting is lately Van Halen has been featured in movie soundtracks, show awards, honoured and given recognition by their peers and the music industry. Van Halen is an institution, a lifestyle!! Van Halen far bigger and much more important than a ‘Chickenfoot’ that and a ‘The Other Half’ BS!! Van Halen are untouchable!!! You just can’t get enough of the mighty Van Halen, we fans always want more!! I’m sure Van Halen understands the pain and frustration of us fans that new material has been far too long in the waiting. I think they learnt a valuable lesson from the VH 3 album era and maybe set them back a little. But they always live to rock another day. Van Halen never releases anything for the sake of releasing. They care about what they release, like Dave & Eddie said in their 2007/08 tour press conference, “We don’t do things half hearted”.
VAN HALEN FOREVER!!
September 5th, 2009 at 7:59 am
Ludwig-
People know Dave more than Sammy. Dave was more entertaining than Sammy. People know more dave songs than Sammy songs( jump, Aint Talkin bout love, You Really got Me etc.) How ever Sammy had way more talent than Dave. Sammy even sang Dave songs live. Dont tell me wether u liked it or not. Just know that he did it and Dave didnt. Dont be giving Sammy a bunch of shit. You got to give Sammy some credit.
September 5th, 2009 at 8:48 am
Dave! What the hell are u doing? “Cmon Dave give me a break” Would you just show up somewhere? Are you frickin in hiding or what? There’s too many people out there that want to see you in the limelight! This isn’t the Dave we once knew.Get some damn attention! Just don’t get caught buying any bud. Thats not the kind of attention we are talking about here.
September 5th, 2009 at 9:19 am
To Glen Cunnington,
Point taken. But let’s get one thing straight here; I’m not taking a pot shot at Sammy. I assume you referred about songs written about Dave and not Sam or who’s more relevant. If there is an artist who’s written a song about Sammy Hagar then enlighten me.
My main point is why should Dave sing Van Hagar songs in the first place? He’s the original and the best. A blind bat could see that Dave can’t sing Sammy’s range. That’s like telling Neil Diamond to sing Rush!! Dave would be the first to admit that! But that doesn’t make him a worse singer than Sam. So Sam’s got a higher range, BIG DEAL!!! Dave’s vocals are part of the signature sound that is classic Van Halen!!! So why should Dave sing Van Hagar in the first place when the early Van Halen material is far more popular and superior!! He won’t do it just for the sake of pleasing the small minority of Van Hagar fans. Van Hagar fans are vastly outnumbered!! People around the world still don’t know that Sam sang in Van Halen!! Believe it or not it’s true!! Dave is the one and only for Van Halen. Its rock n roll law!! They are complete two different singers. This is not a competition about who can sing higher?!! It’s about who’s the best for Van Halen!! Diamond Dave & Van Halen are perfect for each other, they are untouchable as far as I’m concerned!!!
I think it’s pathetic how the Dave haters go on and on about how much higher Sammy can sing and that Dave can’t sing. Got news for them whether they like it or not, Dave can sing and sing like he knows best!!! When you try to compare Dave to anybody else, you can’t!! He’s a complete ORIGINAL, A ONE OF A KIND, like Eddie is on guitar. Do you agree? The only credit I give Sam is having the balls to take on the vocals in Van Halen when Dave left. But when he mocked and disrespected Dave’s work in Van Halen, that’s just low. He does himself no favours and wins no fans!!! Sam’s ego got the better of him and he thought his shit didn’t stink!!
September 5th, 2009 at 9:58 am
DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER!! THE DIAMOND ONE IS THE GREATEST FRONTMAN OF ALL TIME!!!
September 5th, 2009 at 10:55 am
He’s (DLR) probably on strict orders from his new “boss” to save it all (publicity, talent, exposure) for the upcoming album and next tour and he doesn’t want to jeopordize that. I can’t say as I blame him. Eddie might have a 17 year old nephew or something with the last name Van Halen who needs a job…
September 5th, 2009 at 10:58 am
You Really Got Me is a Kinks song, covered well by Van Halen, much like Quite Riot nicely covered Slade’s Cum On Feel The Noize. Both were blockbusters that put those two groups “on the map.”
yeah, we know, Dave’s great. But so is Sam in his own very different way. And Sam made a huge contribution to VH, like KEEPING THEM GOING when Dave was gone and helping them to finally make #1 charted albums, etc…so that Dave actually had something to come back to later. That should count for something, even to the hardest core Dave-or-the-grave types.
September 5th, 2009 at 11:07 am
Noted Dooley… duely noted…
Just like “Coy & Vance vs. Bo & Luke”, “Kirk vs. Picard”, “Republican vs. Democrat”, “Conservative vs. NDP”, “Coke vs. Pepsi”, “USA vs. The World”, some people just ain’t going to get along.
I keep laughing about this site, cause even though we’re all here for the same reason, we can still infight like That there American Revolution.
It’s stupid, it’s dumb and it’s really lame.
But some people get off on this kind of stuff… Like that song by Dennis Leary.
September 5th, 2009 at 11:52 am
Ladies and Gentlemen, now that blake has made his pathetic plea to DLR, we should find it in our hearts to donate what you can (even a nickel will do) so we can help the mentally challenged!!! With your support, we can prevent further brain farts and injuries from the less fortunate like ,BubbaCo, J5149.5, TheTruthHurts and RickiVanWiener! Remember folks, a mind is a terrible thing to waste!!!! Thank you for supporting these drooling idiots!!!! Have a great Labor Day weekend and God bless!!!
September 5th, 2009 at 12:12 pm
Scar… the way you’ve been blasting away at everyone as-of-late, I think we’re going to have to start calling you Scarface.
Everytime I read a post of yours I see a guy with a crazy Joker-like smile, holding two uzi’s and firing away laughing.
I didn’t think blake’s comments were too crazy, but maybe you two are having a feud??
Peace out brother!
September 5th, 2009 at 1:22 pm
Oh, don’t pick on Scar. He probably was bullied in HS for his acne and now trolls the interwebz taking out his pubescent angst on others, safely and anonymously. It’s people like you that make the internet what is is. Thank you Scar.
September 5th, 2009 at 2:16 pm
Ludwig
Aparenly you didnt see the part that says “People know Dave more than Sammy. Dave was more entertaining than Sammy. People know more dave songs than Sammy songs( jump, Aint Talkin bout love, You Really got Me etc.)”. Okay. Ill say it once again…overall Dave did do better than Sammy. But if it wasnt for Sammy who couldve sang for vh. Now for Sammies moment… As far as who was better solo. Sammy kicks dave right in the ass. Sammy literally did 5 times better. Im not trying to offend you, Im just saying dont give Sammy a whole bunch of shit. Hey at least Sammys doing something right now. But hey. I got a three daY weekend for Labor Day so now i dont give a shit. later
September 5th, 2009 at 2:17 pm
Scar,
You have a great Labor Day as well brother!!
Don’t even spend an ioda of energy on stupid f**ks like Blake and lucky!! I am sure they will give us lots of ammo after the weekend with their stupidity!!
Peace brother!!
September 5th, 2009 at 3:18 pm
Jeff, thanks, I hear you bro! Sometimes I just can’t help myself!!! I know my comments really get to them!!! The best part is when they try to get me back with the lame responses - AND FAIL(LOL)! It’s pure comedy!!! Peace bro!!
September 5th, 2009 at 4:05 pm
Two Things -
One - “Quick FYI, Inara George, daughter of Lowell George of the Mothers of Invention and Little Feat”
Anyone here that hates the Lowell George lineup of Little Feat is not really into rock and roll and is just a poser. One of the best bands ever.
Two - I wish I could say Im surprised at the level of hate this song is getting. But I’m not.
I dont expect VH fans to have very eclectic tastes in music. I can go from Tchaikowsky to The Roots to Van Halen to Tool to Pj Harvey in a mississippi minute.
I was with everybody when they dissed that lame emo band with their video.
But you guys that are dissing Bird and The Bee are wrong. If you dont like this song fine. But at least give a listen to their other songs -
Fucking Boyfriend - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LaonHYT6cOo
My Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hv3ZdOdjXso
Or songs from her album Invitation a collaboration with the great Van Dyke Parks who worked with Brian Wilson on Smile -
Oh My Love - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJBTb-mn5_s
Of course it doesnt have the kickassness of VH. But that’s because let’s see, its a different type of MUSIC.
Open your Coors light filled brains for once to other genres of music. If Diamond Dave can do it, so can you guys
September 5th, 2009 at 7:14 pm
5 other excellent Bird And The Bee songs:
Love Letter To Japan
Again And Again
Raygun
LA LA LA
Fu**ing Boyfriend
(the album versions are better than some of the live ones on YouTube)
September 5th, 2009 at 9:03 pm
The video is a nice concept, but it’s a quirky sounding song. Kind of like Bjork meets Burt Bacharach…
September 5th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
My only complaint about this touching tribute/shout-out to one of the Greatest Frontmen Of All Time, is the lyrical choice of “Come on, Dave show me what you got, I can take it” as opposed to the obvious “Come on Dave… give me a break!”
Otherwise…
I think Dave’s somewhere, maybe trying to use some Voodoo Magic Paramedical knowledge to raise the Zombie Michael Jackson, touched at this little ditty.
Ever have a chick dedicate a song to you that was kickass?
Now what if she sang a song about you.
Hummala-bibbibila-zimmilla-bubbilia!
Hummala-bibbibila-zimmilla-bop!
That’s totally Gigolo style man!
September 6th, 2009 at 12:12 am
i actually love this song… not because its about DLR but because it find the melody so unique during the chorus. The DLR lyrics make it just that much better hahaha
September 6th, 2009 at 7:45 am
Glen Cunnington
I guess we’ll agree to disagree. (on some things)
I didn’t make any comments on comparing Dave’s and Sammy’s solo work. That’s a whole other discussion. But since you brought it up, let me put it this way. Turning out more albums doesn’t say to me that Sam is better than Dave. IMO I think Dave has taken more risk’s than Van Halen & Sammy put together in his solo work!!! Yes I know some have failed (Vegas) but others were hugely successful. You’ve got to give Dave credit for that. Even Eddie complimented Dave on doing that!!
I have listened to both Sam’s & Dave’s solo albums, some great songs from both! But Dave just has that cutting edge that reaches a far broad and greater audience. Dave has the connection that people are drawn too, the guy puts a smile on your face and he is so full of life, his songs reflect that!!! The last thing I want to hear from Dave is him getting sensitive and all that shit you hear presently in today’s music. Dave doesn’t want to remind me of how shitty and tough life is; he just wants to put a smile on your face!!! Is there anything wrong with that? You see that’s why I’ll always defend him; he’s given us (along with Van Halen!) the ultimate soundtrack of our lives!! Because the world today is so full of miserable people who have shitty lives, why hang shit on him? Dave embrace’s life and wants to give you the audience/fans a stellar and memorable nights entertainment. Diamonds are forever!!!
September 6th, 2009 at 3:22 pm
I love vh but man, what a stupid song and stupid lyrics. Why would someone waste their time writing a song about DD…
September 6th, 2009 at 7:23 pm
obviously dlr was the greatest showman/frontman of all time
but he could not sing or was to wasted or did not care to sing live AT ALL.
he sang better live in 2007 than in 1983!!!
sammy sings better and writes better pop.
dave has the edge on lyrics for sure..
a clever cat.
September 7th, 2009 at 9:22 am
Scar is probably one of the ONLY people here that embraces that Gonzo Rock-N-Roll mentality that made RnR great in the first place ……..Fuck off whiners and Happy Memorial Day!! P:S Do you know where your Daughters are?!?!?
September 7th, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Push to Shove..Memorial Day? Is it May?
September 8th, 2009 at 6:56 am
Ludwig:
Great post brother!
Dave would be proud!
September 8th, 2009 at 8:05 am
I LOVED IT!
It was good fun, so why are so many of you so upset? Listen to it one more time and maybe it will relax you or something.
There was one part where she says “come on Dave…show me what you’ve got”, and I was expecting COME ON DAVE…GIVE ME A BREAK…that would have have been a fun little nod to that ditty from Fair Warning.
Anyway, fun song and video. Can you imagine the broad shit-eating grin on Dave’s face the first time he saw this?
BRAVO!
September 9th, 2009 at 8:25 am
i think it would be cool if the format for VHND was changed a bit-
for example, MAJOR updates would be the top-banner headline and little things like retro clips and interviews with alumni would be in a sidebar.
this way, the crybabies would look atthe front page and see what the headline is ( which would typically reamin unchanged- but always a major news item ie: tour dates, recording sessions, new dvd etc etc ) and the sidebar could have more frequent updates about the peripheral things ( ie : old clips and alumni stuff )
so- we could keep up to date on chickenfoot, mike, sammy, gary, producers, etc AND maybe the windbags would get off thier period
