Chad Smith on Chili Peppers, Chickenfoot futures

chickenfoot

From the full interview with Chad Smith on MusicRadar.com, posted today:

Chickenfoot excerpt:

And what about Chickenfoot? After you do the Chili Peppers, are you going to do another record?

“Absolutely! We’re having so much fun and it’s gone so well – there’s no reason not to continue with Chickenfoot. That’s something I want to make very clear: Chickenfoot isn’t a one-off thing for any of us. We’re a band.

“I would imagine during my time with the Peppers that Joe will probably do another solo record, and maybe Sammy and Mike will do something on their own. But as soon as I’m done with the Chili Peppers, I’m diving right back into Chickenfoot. We’re going to outdo this record, too. That’s the plan and I’m sticking to it.”

Well at least we know that Mr Russell bought at least two Hagar albums, despite his whinging :-)

Also, my personal guitar hero, David Gilmour, recorded and released his best selling album when he was 60 (On an Island – 2005) and then went on tour. Its good to see the old guard of rock come out and do it all again.

I would happily listen to a new foot cd, and a new VH cd, as I’m a fan of rock music first, before a fan of any particular band.

  • jrod 2009

I thought the wolfgang guitars were made by peavey?

  • D L R

I believe Eddie did make a change during the last tour to Fender.

  • Jeff

Not the new ones jrod. They are made by Fender under the EVH name.

  • Pete

WOW…the negativity really is hitting a low on this topic, which seems pretty harmless on its own.

Even Satch is amazed that Sammy sounds the same singing “Heavy Metal” from 1981 as he did singing it in 1981. He sounds better singing TODAY at 62 than he did at 18 in Montrose.

If you don’t like Sammy, that’s cool. The man has pipes, but whether or not you like them I realize is a matter of taste.

Chickenfoot has created a whole new group identity in 2009 when records don’t sell. They debuted at #4, and held that position during their 2nd week. That’s pretty impressive in 2009. This isn’t 1984. I applaud the boys for creating something NEW that has rocked so many people.

I hope VH create something new too when they’re ready. The Chillis will have Chad tied up for 18 months. I wonder who will come out with their record first?

Regardless, I look forward to both, and the mere presence of one band or singer doesn’t make me angry, negative, or like feeling like being rude to someone. The more great music the better!

    Have a good night everyone!

    Pete

I love how Chad went out of his way to affirm that Chickenfoot is a band with a future. For months there’s been so many people knocking CF saying they were contrived and downing the music (even before hearing it). But anyone who’s seen them in concert knows better – even skeptics. I had the good fortune to win tickets to see them at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on the 15th. They absolutely blew everyone away. Nothing contrived – just a group of guys having a genuinely good time. The crowd loved it. So good to see the guys getting along and planning future albums and tours. This isn’t a one off supergroup as they’ve been called by the press. Anyone’s who’s seen Sammy live on this tour will tell you that he has many years left in him. I can’t wait to see them on the next tour! I think they set out to prove to the skeptics of the world that what they had was special and they didn’t need to rely on old classics. Now that that’s been established…imagine the next tour when they do bring out some old gems. I think album and tour number two will be even better. Rock on Chickenfoot!

Pete said, “The more music the better!”

Agreed. Why bicker? Give me more Chickenfoot and more Van Halen!

Why can’t we all just get along?

I went to Chickenfoot at the Rock HOF in Cleveland. Simply awesome. Thank you Sammy, Mike, Joe, and Chad!!! It was a night I’ll never forget.

  • Bo

    Good show all around.

  • phil

    hahahahahahahahahahahahaha jeff! you’re the man!

  • Billy C

Seen 2 Chickenfoot shows in the past week …. I have say it was some of the best “Rock” I have seen in a long long time!
It was nice to see Sammy & Mike back on stage together .. It was good “In your Face” Rock & Roll!! Long Live the Foot!!!
Can not fucking wait to see more!!

  • Karl

Dan, what Ed says and what Ed does are not always related. Not to mention the fact that the last time he spoke he was pretty firm about a tour but mumbled when it came to talking about tunes. My guess is, that after raking in $93 million on the last tour without needing a record to pull in the crowds, we’re just going to get another tour with the chance of a CD running a very distant outside bet. All depends on whether Ed thinks he can fill big halls again without a record. And if we’re all dumb enough to oblige (I was dumb enough to fly across the Atlantic for the last cold meal) you can kiss goodbye to a new CD. I want it as much as anyone but only a fool would be putting money on it before actually slipping a VH CD into their player.

Hey guys, might want to lay off Dan a little. He’s no dumber than most of us who post here… :-)

  • SCAR

Karl, speaking for myself, at times I get ripped on here for my mouth too!! I look at it this way, if I set myself up to get ripped on by others for what ever reason, I probably deserve it!!! However, I could care less what people think about me, so I don’t let it bother me and I’ll admit I like to turn the tables and rip them back!!!! Unfortunatley too many haters, cry babies and self acclaimed experts (because they read a book about VH) frequent this site and don’t think before they post their comments. If they don’t want to risk getting ripped on this site they need to use some common sense before they post anything, if not they need to man up and take the heat!!!!

  • Pete

I’m with Karl, Dan has his own point of view, but agree or disagree it’s kind of lame to be so rude to someone when you’re not there to say it in person.

SCAR…come on man, when have you ever been rip-worthy? You seem like a pretty interesting cat from time to time. Though I often skim the posts here, I usually look forward to hearing what SKUTCH and yourself have to say.

    Have a good one everyone…

    Pete

  • SCAR

Pete, a couple of people have ripped me and like I said, I just turn it around and rip them back!!! For example remember these Gomer’s (just to name a few) Cabo Wabo Tequila Man ,Jake (w/his band Magnesium) & Nick? Well I couldn’t blame you if you didn’t (They are really not worth remembering) – they were at my mercy after ripping me and now they don’t post a lot anymore (if at all)! Clowns like that can’t handle the heat!!! I’d definetly would like to rip them again given the opportunity, if only they would post something lame again!!!!!

  • Pete

SCAR…you’re right, I just skim those guys out…you’re the goods baby!

  • Thunder

“mikey” is the most overrated “musician” in the history of music. He is very very average. He was in the right place at the right time when he met Ed and Dave. Not to mention he’s about as uncool as it possibly gets.

  • Blackbones

I came to check out the site, haven’t been since the last reunion news was flying about the blog. Anyhow, I just picked up the “foot” and it rocks, I am a huge VH, Sammy, Satch & Chili fan, I love “Sexy Young Thang!” Anyhow it’s cool to see the passion posts here. On a hopeful note, I’d love to take my 9 year old son to see VH in any incarnation so he can see EVH do his 316/Eruption solo live. Took him to AC/DC last night in Tacoma WA and Angus put on quite a “High Octane” solo performance on the outtro of Let there be Rock. My son said, “dad that was so cool, the only thing that could be cooler is to see EVH do eruption live.” I sure hope Ed, Al & Dave can keep it together long enough to put out a new rockin’ album and tour, soon I might add. Thanks!

  • straightshooter

Yes, I agree that all the guys in Chickenfoot have “chops” and Sammy still has a great voice but in terms of songwriting it’s total generic crap. Nothing original about it whatsoever. I guess I’m more critical being a musician myself. My guess is, this Chickenfoot project will be over and done with in a year or less. Hopefully Ed will finally wise up and realize what an integral part of VH that Michael Anthony was….
