  • Top Jimmy

Can’t wait to hear what Dave have to say about this?? Dave?? Dave??? Hello??? Dave are you there???

  • phil

    david? david? VHND calling david!?

  • RickieVanWhalen

    No news is no news.

  • ben

it would be cool if Dave wins the award.

  • pushtoshove

If anyone could breath some life into the ‘way-too-serious’ MTV awards it is Dave! Daaaave TV!!!!!!

  • Kayser Sozay

Why does MTV even do video music awards? I thought they gave up on music videos long ago.

  • Mikey

Would be nice to see DLR win, but the competition’s stiff.

    I thought “Sabotage” won a moonman…

Frankly, if they wanted to give the show a kick in the ass, VH needs to play at the top of the show.

  • Skutch

    MTV plays videos?

  • Skutch

Anyway, MTV is every bit as lame as a Rolling Stone award, so I’m sure Dave wouldn’t skip a night in the hot tub with women for this.

Prediction: U2 will win because the world worships U2. Roth isn’t trendy enough to win this.

  • Chicken Joe

MTV is pathetic. I wish they would dissappear off the face of the Earth. It’s a complete disgrace what they’ve reduced themselves to over the years. I remember when they use to play all kinds of music all day long. Now it’s reality wannabe TV, and the 30 second music video clips they sometimes play are either bubble gum crap, rap or R&B, or teeniebopper poppunk/emo junk. What the hell happened to real rock music, I feel like overthrowing or wiping out the entire MTV regime and inserting a new one like the old format, and I don’t think I’m alone on this. Much like our own goverenment has been running the once greatest country in the world into the ground. Just venting, what a shame.

If DLR wins this award (which I hope he does) and is asked to appear and provide an acceptance speech, he better clear it with EVH first. Otherise, we are later gonna hear EVH saying “DLR quit!” Just in the same fasion that Mike was ousted in.

  • Ludwig

I was just wondering, did Van Halen win any award for Jump or Hot For Teacher? Now those 2 clips are iconic, they don’t make clips like those anymore. But music and clips aren’t made like that today. Van Halen can only make music and video clips like that!!

  • Ludwig

I agree Chicken Joe, I can’t stand MTV!! I’m amazed that they are still on air. How MTV gets away with the shit they put on is pathetic. I haven’t watched MTV for over 15 years!!!! If it’s the shit music that I’ve missed out on then I can sleep good at night. For those that think MTV is good? GET A LIFE!!!!

  • walteR

Dave was good when schmaltz ran rock n roll !!!!!!!!! Now he’s riding Eddie’s nuts for a job!!!!!!

  • Smax

    empty v

  • NotReallyDave

Hey! It’s Dave! Man, I loved makin’ this video, but not as much as I loved makin’ your sister!

(Pretty sure he’d say something close to that.)

  • Phil

    MTwho? Screw them.

  • Kimberly

    I LOVE YOU DAVE<3

    I think this is cool…;)

  • Nat

As much as I love Dave’s video, I really think Sabotage is the best of the bunch in that list.

  • Scottso

They’ll probably give it to Radiohead – the critics LOVE them. I don’t know why though. Radiohead is mediocre, at best.

  • http://vhnd surfsno2008

first there was sabbath, then zeppelin, then the who, then came van halen and then guns and roses.

who faded faster axl rose and the axl rose band (aka new gnr)
    or DLR

still after it all in the end of the day i like dave.
edweird is just weird. sam is the man and mike is just a nice guy. al is actually a robot who does not age!

  • Rich

The award should either go to Foo Fighters or Radiohead.

C’mon guys, DLR covering Beach Boys? At least the other songs were off successful records and were original.

But yeah it’ll probably go to U2 because they are just huge. Bigger than DLR, Sammy and Van Halen combined. Doesn’t make them good, just saying that they’re huge.

  • steve

This video has nothing to do with the making of California Girls; the interview footage and b-roll was taken from the open casting call held for the aborted Crazy From the Heat movie.

  • steve

Just A Gigolo was a much better video and should have been in this category instead of California Girls

  • Karl

If DLR had done nothing else in music other than this vide it would have been enough. Although I’m not sure if it’s a work of genius or just proof the he’s a clown…

  • Deak1984

Now, if I could have done a video, I wouldn’t have done it like that at all! I would have done it just like this…..

  • mjc

how’s ed’s hush money treating you dave?

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

I personally think that even though he covered a beach boy song it was the video that was ahead of its time. To this day it is still funny and entertaining. The opening alone is classic: Give me a bottle of anything….and a glazed donut….TO GO!” :)
Wow…MTV. I remember it before it sucked. When they actually played videos! I can honestly say that I HATE mtv now and could care less about what it became. I will never watch it again and thats sad cause i grew up with it!
Remember the good ol days of “Headbangers Ball” hosted by rikki? Maaaaan…..those were the days!
Even if dave doesnt win its all good. In our hearts we know that california girls and just a gigilo are classic video’s that will never be forgotten. It’s a reminder of how good mtv was back in those days and when music used to make you smile…

  • http://vhnd surfsno2008

    dlr radio show was great!

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

Wait….let me tune in my brain here….early morning syndrome…

That opening line i mentioned was the opening for yankee rose….jeez duck whats up with you man….slippin? I dont know man….tired from last night…why am i talking to myself? Cause your nuts. Oh…

  • Kimberly

We have lots of hater’s on this site lol.
    DAVE ROCKS <3 <3

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

Steve: I agree %100 man. “Just a gigilo” is a much better video. So many memorable scenes (Electricuting Billy Idol and bitch slapping Boy George! LOL!)

Kim: I will never understand how anyone can HATE DLR. Sure he was quoted by rolling stone mag as being the most obnoxious singer ever, but give credit where credit is due.
The man back in his hayday was very creative and extremely entertaining. He knew how to work a crowd and he gave VH that extra PUNCH so to say. He was also probley one of the first lead singers (besides jim dandy) to have stage raps that alone could sell a show. When dave was on stage with VH he was like the tazmanian devil. His classic one liners and his non stop energy made you believe the show would never end……and when it did, you wished it didnt.
There are not many frontmen out there that brought to the rock n roll table like dave did. Sure, he may not be the rock god he was 20 years ago and his star may have lost some shine for awhile. But like the quote goes: It’s better to burn out…than fade away.
    Long live David Lee roth!

  • Darren from Brooklyn

Is there a web site to vote? I for one will vote for Dave. The man deserved it then and it may be a little late but better late then never. I do know he won the kodack color award for most vibrant video of that year. The dude deserves it. Good luck my man.

  • Kimberly

Amen Ducky!!! Dave is incredible, I loove how he is such a showman…it makes for a fabulous show. I am so jealous you got to be around for VH in the late 70′s/80′s…this generation has been robbed of good music lol. Sure there is a lot of good stuff floating around occassionally, but…not VH!! Haha. I would love to turn the radio on one day and hear Van Halen. I think I might die.
Anyways! Haha yes, I LOVE DLR so so much. And agree with you 100%<3

  • ROB5150

“Crazy from the heat”…not exactly rock ‘n’roll, at that time was hard defend Dave or Van Halen, that’s why I was not to much sorry when Dave left/fired. Ok, with Sammy Van Halen turned in A.O.R, but at least was not swing or boogie and F.U.C.K really rocks, the best album of Van Halen!

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

    Well kim….

Dont remember much of the late 70′s. Not due to drugs…just due to me being a little duck of four years old! LOL! Dont know if you caught my post about when i first got into VH when I was 10 years old? Well that was my beginning!

Yeah…i feel bad for your generation. I thought growing up in the 90′s sucked! Ha..ha.
The problem with music today is there is no substance…no orginality….no fun. It’s all about “one hit song” and you’re a rockstar. Bullshit! There’s a hell of a lot more behind being a rockstar….and it aint one hit song ok?
There was a time when the music did the talking and you eiether had it…or you didnt! Van halen with dave had it! :)

Great to have such a cool girl hanging around! You keep us all from killing each other and im sure make many wonder, what the hell you look like! ;)

Rock on kim….you’re a breath of fresh air compared to many of the girls out there today.

  • EBMusicMan

    Skutch,

Just read one of your idiotic statements on another page about Line 6 gear. You pinhead, some of the top musicians in the business use Line 6 gear…peddles..amps..instruments..from the Eagles to Metallica. When you graduate from your pignose & Squier strat then you can talk trash about Line 6 kid.

  • Russ

Gonna start a new topic. On another thead someone said that DLR can’t do a ballad. I immediately went to “Little Dreamer” which is a long time fav. Any thoughts?

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

    Russ:

Funny you mentioned “Little Dreamer”…great song.
Yeah…I guess you could say it’s a ballad. But it’s
not a sappy type of ballad that “you know who” usually brings to the VH table. It has a great sound to it and daves vocals are spot on. The echo’s alone are priceless.

Now…would “Woman in love” be known as a dave ballad too?
Granted it’s about a girl leaving her man for another girl…but I dont know if its considered a ballad.
I do know that it’s another great classic VH song with some great vocals by dave and some beautiful guitar work by eddie.

    Your thoughts?

  • Russ

    Thanks for the words Duck,

Yea I think Women in Love was another DLR ballad (or what we would consider a DLR ballad). That was the thing about those early albums…even the slow songs were high octane enough that it didn’t matter. We wouldn’t skip over them. That’s why I think I’ll Wait is discussed kind of sheeply. Personally I think the keyboards tamed it too much. Imagine the song with straight guitar in the tradition of the former two tunes.

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

    Russ:

    Agreed.

That’s one of the many things I love about those old songs.
Every one of those songs (excluding the covers)had something very special about them. Even the slow ones.
Example: I love eddies solo in women in love, little dreamer, and especially i’ll wait.

Now as far as keyboards in rock are concerned, its usually hit or miss with me. “Jump” & “I’ll wait” are two that I can listen to anytime cause those keyboards make me feel something. The opening keys on “I’ll wait” is just so damn cool to me. And then once alex’s drums kick in it’s just goosebump material to me.

But, there’s a point when some keyboards truly RUIN a good band or song. I can totally understand why so many VH fans back in the day were in horror when they heard eddie playing
    keyboards.

Eiether way it all comes down to what rocks ya!

    Stay cool russ!
