Eddie Van Halen Picks the Essential Van Halen Songs

eddie-van-halen-vegas

With no official word from Activision on the track list for the upcoming ‘Guitar Hero: Van Halen’ game, the Web is buzzing with rumors. While Spinner can’t confirm any of them, we’re pretty sure tracks like ‘Spanish Fly,’ ‘Eruption’ and ‘Runnin’ With The Devil’ will be included. What makes us so confident? We heard it from the guitar hero himself, Eddie Van Halen.

When Spinner spoke with Eddie earlier this year, we asked him to pick some of the essential Van Halen tunes, the ones he would suggest to budding VH fans. “I think ‘Eruption’ is one. ‘Spanish Fly,’ just because it’s the same thing except it sounds like Segovia doing something, it’s on a Flamenco guitar. I wish somebody would take that technique and do something with it,” he says laughing. “I had no idea it would trip people out to the point that it did.”

As one would imagine of a guy who’s written some of the most memorable riffs in all of rock over, narrowing the list down was tough, so he turned to the audience to help with the selection process. “To pick songs, I can only go by what the audience response is, like say ‘Runnin’ With the Devil.’ To the day I die, we’ll have to play that because that’s what people want to hear, and ‘Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love,’ ‘Unchained’ and ‘Jump.’ There’s all kinds of stuff.”

These are all songs that of course almost have to be on a game celebrating the VH legacy, but what about some dark horses that could make it? “I love ‘Girl Gone Bad,’” he says. “One of my favorite songs of ours is ‘Drop Dead Legs.’ Whether it’s a hit or not, I love that song. Probably the more obscure stuff, like Wolfie [his son/bassist Wolfgang Van Halen] loves ‘Romeo Delight.’ I do too.”

So there you have it, kids. The best of Van Halen from the man himself.

frankly- putting sam or mike or gary in the game would only confuse people .

some VH fans think the band ended with ” fair warning ”
some VH fans think “VH3″ is a direct sequel to ” fair warning”
some VH fans think mike got screwed.
some VH fans think mike lucked his way through the whole thing
some VH fans think sam rescued the band from post-DLR malaise
some VH fans think the DLR band IS van halen with a different guitarist
some VH fans LOVE chickenfoot as a quasi- van hagar
some VH fans detest chickenfoot as a quasi-van hagar.
some VH fans believe they will do a new record and it will ROCK

NO MIKEY WHAT A SHAME, EDDIE U SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF.

  • billy-bo

Source of Infection and All Fired Up are songs that mach the Dave era in quality- people rarely mention these.

  • iwannaberr

Keefer, what are you talking about poor lyrics for? Here’s a Dave sample for ya. Remember this one?

Panama ha ha ha ho ho PANAMA!

    Wow, brilliant!!!

  • Kimberly

iwannaberr– Much as I love Dave that definitely made me laugh out loud haha.

Come on guys, honestly it is what it is…can’t really change it..maye someday there will be a Van Hagar game, who knows? Either way no matter what portion of VH is represented, it is still VH and I think it would be cool to support it you know? Why the bad beef anyway? What do people have against Sammy..? I mean I LOVE Dave and that music is what I prefer, but come on..it’s not like Sammy is awful..he is actually damn good. Its all about preference so who really cares?

Sorry, I just kinda feel like Sammy should get a break from all this bashing…he isn’t like an awful person lol. Just different from Dave. Musicians should be able to grow and write all kinds of different music…whatever makes them feel a certain way. So, Ed had some different music with Sam…its all in the same really..its music

Anywho, have a good day guys! <3

All hard-core Van Halen fans have favorite songs from each VH album that weren’t necessarily considered hits, singles, rarely (or never) played on the radio, etc. And by “hard-core” I mean a fan who has listened to every VH studio album countless times and knows every song.

Everybody knows and loves “Eruption” & “Jump” & “Dreams” & “Poundcake”.

Here’s my list of favorite VH tracks that may have eluded the general public, one song from each album:

“Feel Your Love Tonight” from VAN HALEN
“Outta Love Again” from VAN HALEN II (guitar solo is SICK!)
“In A Simple Rhyme” from WOMEN AND CHILDREN FIRST
“So This Is Love?” from FAIR WARNING (awesome rhythm guitar)
“The Full Bug” from DIVER DOWN
“Girl Gone Bad” from 1984 (some tasty bass lines)
    “5150″ from 5150 (jaw-dropping guitar playing!)
“Mine All Mine” from OU812 (nice mix of guitar & keyboards)
“Man On A Mission” from FOR U.C.K. (multiple cool riffs)
“Big Fat Money” from BALANCE (rocks, Rocks, ROCKS!)

And I’ll even include something with Gary Cherone:

    “One I Want” from VH3

These hidden gems are what made every record so special.

Long live EVH! May he someday (hopefully soon) put out a new VH cd!! (We all know we’re gonna buy it).

  • RA 8 1 2

My favorite video is Hot for Teacher. Just too funny.

As for list of songs one per album:

    VH1: Im the One
    VH2: Beautiful Girls
    Women & Children: Romeo Delight
    Fair Warning: Mean Street
    Diver Down: Big Bad Bill
    1984: Girl Gone Bad
    5150: Summer Nights
    OU812: AFU
    F.U.C.K: In & Out
Balance: Dont tell me what Love Can Do
VH3: Fire in the Hole (Although hearing Ed mumble in How many say I is mildly amusing!)

  • Wayne5150

For sure “girl gone bad ” rocks, wish they would have done that one in Dallas last year. I was floored when they played ” Little Guitars “

  • MeWiseMagic

Couldn’t help but add my two cents.

Dissapointing but not suprising that Hagar era isn’t going to be represented at all, as hands down – Humans Being was the best guitar song from that era and just perfect for the game which is all about guitar playing.

Roaring power chords that jump into classily placed open chords, a long killer solo in three distinct parts, and an awesome outro featuring the second guitar. Ear piercing bent notes, two hand tapping, typical staple EVH licks (especially in the second solo) Any guitarist and general fan of music and Van Halen could at least agree with that!

  • SirFrankenberry

The US Festival is one of the few complete pro-shot concerts available of the Roth era. And the best quality video.
Unfortunately, the performance is VH at their drunken WORST!
    Primarily Roth.
Likely why Vh1 left it out.

  • John

I concur on the US festival. They were absolutley horrid. The harmonica solo on the Full Bug is hilarious. It sounds like my four year old playing.

  • RA 8 1 2

LOL about the US festival. In the first minute during the opening song of Romeo Delight Dave yells ” I FORGOT THE FUCKIN WORDS!” LOL!

  • ROB5150

Italian press wrote that Roth had an issue before the gig of US festival (drunk or something else), and also the Van Halen entered in World Guinness record for the band most payed for a single gig.

  • SirFrankenberry

Van Halen was paid $17,000 PER MINUTE for that shitty
    performance.
And that is ALOT of money by 1983 standards…

  • steve preston

    My Faves:

    1) Me Wise Magic
    2) Unchained
    3) Everybody Wants Some!!
    4) And The Cradle Will Rock
    5) Eruption

  • Line6Guy

I agree with some of the posters about VH’s US Festival performance…they were drunk off their asses and sounded terrible! The best footage shot of the Roth era live would be the 81′ Oakland shows and sad to say, they only have three songs of that smokin’ tour. That was definitely VH at the top of thier game w Roth!!

MeWiseMagic, I agree about your choice for Human’s Being. I also think that song has one of the lamest choruses ever…”Shiiine on…Shiiine on”. Not to be left out, the ever so lame “She put the cream in my coffee…cherry on banana..” Sometimes I think Hagar should write for Barney or Blues Clues.

  • http://none Ducky / Dirty Duck

Line6guy…thanks for making me laugh out loud brother!
One of the many reasons I dont like sammy hagar or what he brought to VH. The lyrics are so lame and have no impact at all. I say it all the time….you can have the best pipes in the biz, but if what your sprayin’ is word barf who cares?
I’ll move on because im not here to be a hater…just a realist.

Ok…sure the US FEST was NOT one of the greatest performances with roth but there were some STELLAR moments that many are overlooking here. First one that comes to mind was when eddie and al are jamming (dueling)and you get to hear what would eventually become : Girl Gone Bad! Love that part! Sure they were wasted….all the bands were. Vh just got a head start! ;)

  • Jorge

Don’t forget to thank Sammy Hagar for keeping the Van Halen name alive in the charts while Dave took a vacation in the 80′s.
#1 isn’t too bad for someone that sucks….right?
