Wait a cotton pickin minute here, the so called Van Halen fans are a bunch of angry, idiotic complainers I have ever heard, even when Sammy was part of Van Halen and making great rock and roll music and Van Halen worked, Van Halen is nothing with out Sammy Hagar or Michael Anthony, and this Chickenfoot is way better than the last 13 years of Van Halen besides the 3 songs that came out in 2005 which would have been better if Eddie din't control and reck them without have Mikey on board and restaining Sammy. So, you so called VH fans stuck in the pre-'84 years, stay angry like your idol Eddie and be nothing like the new version of Van Halen.

Bridge....

Proof that "sammy hagar" isnt mr. perfect.
Also proof that this guy should let the past go.
If he's so happy with chickenfoot why give a shit about
talkin' eddie van halen? Bitter maybe?
He should be thanking his lucky stars for the shit he fell into.
If it wasnt for "VH", sammy hagar would NEVER be where he is today! You think he's be selling out shows with his solo shit only? Please!
Like roth said many years ago..."Sammy would sell the rights to his butthole if it got him any credit"
Thats my sammy rant for the day....

I can't wait to see the posts in here about what Sammy said about Eddie in the new Guitar Player Mag. This site is gonna melt. Anyone see it yet? Sammy claims that for the better part of his career with VH, the music writing was all a head trip for Eddie, the songs were too "riff oriented" and almost impossible to write lyrics to. I almost tore the mag in half as I was reading it . SOMEBODY MAKE IT STOP!! This is almost like professional wrestling anymore. Doesn't anyone know where the high road is?

What at array of players you just named! The SRV death still breaks my heart. He was the best blues guy every. His death was a terrible blow to our industry.

I would hope that Pat Metheny had your ear. You should check out "Still Life/Talking" from the mid 80s. I do not know much about Lynch?

Never really liked The Attitude song. Couldn't understand why there was a minor fuss being made about it at the time. Too much of that cheesy double tracking that he does. There's lots of Vai I really love, The Riddle, Blue Powder, Bad Horsie, Tender Surrender, Warm Regards, but not The Attitude Song.

Maybe you're right, maybe I can hear it instantly because I play. To me, though, the difference is not subtle. I can tell any of these guys in a few notes. Same with Bettencourt, Lifeson, Young, Gilmour, Slash, Moore, SRV, Lynch, Beck, Santana, Holdsworth, Schenker, Schon, May. It only takes a few notes. That's what makes a great guitarist for me (completely reinventing how the guitar can be played helps, too!). That's what gets me about most of the Joe v Ed arguments here, it always seems to come down to technique. I don't care about technique (although it's to be much admired), it's the voice that makes it.

I think because of our background as players we tend to hear the nuiances, little as they may be, that define players. I certainly can tell satch from EVH from vai. I am not so sure that even a hard core fan could though given a new tune and asked to name who is playing. My guess is that they would say it's EVH because of the legatto lines, harmonics, whammy bar, speed, etc. You know, the whole school of thought is credited, rightfully so, to EVH.

I loved vai with Zappa but he broke into the industry, so to speak, with guitar player magazine and the "attitude song". This tune, IMO, is a blatant but brilliant rip off of the ending section to fools (Women and Children First). By the way, Vai lives in my hometown. I saw him about two years ago in a supermarket but was to blown away to say anything. I regret that!

Chris et al,

You neophytes crack me up. You speak as if you have personal knowledge of everyone's thoughts. And your narrow view of one guitarist being the end all be all of the instrument is laughable. Do you think EVH had no influences ... just came out of the womb divinely inspired, and that he invented every guitar trick he featured? Take his volume swell technique (fret hammer-on while rolling the amp knob). This was done by many guitarists before him, many without any effects electronics ... most notably Roy Buchanan (who's is the greatest guitarist you have probably never heard of ... check out some of his old footage on Youtube to see another virtuoso). Jeff Beck readily admits that Buchanan was a primary influence, as did Jimi Hendrix (although Hendrix would only reluctantly admit that). He was known as the guitar player that guitar players went to see live. Two handed guitar neck tap-on pull-offs ... old news too. Is EVH a vituoso? Absolutely imo, but so are/were so many before him.

Also, check out Adrian Legg. An incredilbe guitarist, He alters tone by adjusting the tuning pegs while playing, among many other beautiful techniques. Some great Yuotube vids of him too.

One more thing on the Eddie vs. Joe debate. Joe can do what Eddie has done, but I don't think eddie could do what Joe does ... not in his decades long drug and alcoholic haze. Joe plays a show with no front man, carrying the entire thing. I'm not saying Eddie couldn't have done that strong and sober, lord knows I would pay money to see him just play guitar all by himself. But Joe is 52 but looks and plays like he is in his mid 30's, in his prime. Ed is in his 50's but seems so much older with the abuse he's incurred. JS has release a ton of new material since VH last laid down a new track.

I'm not saying JS is better than EVH, both are/were legendary guitar players. But if I had to take a guitarist to play right now, it is no contest imo. And that is just my opinion, because after all music appeal is totally subjective. That being said, I think Roy Buchanan is more creative than either ... but I choose to appreciate them all.
