Eddie Van Halen accepts Spike TV’s “Guitar God” award

Spike TV held their third annual Spike TV “Guys Choice” last weekend. Winners were announced Saturday night at the Sony Studios in Los Angeles.

Eddie Van Halen, in the a rare public appearance, was brought to tears as he accepted the first annual “Guitar God Award” for his years of shredding on the six stringed axe. Robert Downey Jr. presented Eddie the award.

Spike TV’s viewers decided each winner, making Eddie Van Halen the “people’s choice” once again (Guitar World’s readers recently voted him Best Rock Guitarist of 2008).

The awards will air SUNDAY, JUNE 21 AT 10:00 PM, ET/PT.

    I presume this award was based almost entirely on Ed’s performance during the “don’t-call-it-a-reunion” tour and not on some newly released EVH material that has somehow gone under the radar.

    Gongrats to Ed on this award; now please start pushing out some of that recorded material you keep talking about.

    It’s ironic that many of the same people who would bash this kind of news (that Ed appears healthy and wins an award) also think Chickenfoot is the next biggest thing since sliced cheese.

    I think this is great, because i agree – Ed defintely is a guitar god

    As for what waitER said, no. I am a huge metallica fan (not as much as VH!), but Death Magnetic would not be grounds to give Hetfield and Hammett guitar gods awards. Firstly, theyre not even close to the skill of EVH. theyre light-years away from him. Also, Kirk Hammett, although a fantastic player, is too repetitive. He just regurgitates and rearranges the same four or five solos over and over again. I’ve heard exactyl identical portions of solos in multiple songs.

    EVH, on the other hand, is an original and overall friggin BADASS guitarist. No one will ever match his skills and creativity.

    This is political. Plain and simple and Ed always acts shy and humble so why is he acting like this is a big deal? Money. This is right before VH guitar hero and it’s a SPIKE TV award for crying out loud. You all need to get a life…especially Kimberly ( whiny queen ). Ed isn’t current anymore.

    The great thing about the Spike TV award and the Guitar World poll is that everyone is eligible to vote. None of us has a say in who gets in to the Rock an Roll Hall of Fame. It means more to me that Eddie showed up for the people than for the small group of musical elitists.

    EVH showing up to pick up an award that the public bestowed on him is awesome. It is difficult for me to understand how that is sore spot for some folks here.

    I agree too, garysamuelroth. I have nothing against Ed showing up to get his award. Good for him. It’s good to see him looking healthy and I hope he gets inspired to get us hungry fans some new music soon.

    I do think it’s odd though that he didn’t even send a note of thanks to the RRHOF for the VH induction. I guess I’ll just blame it on the dark place he was in at the time with the drugs, drinking, just into rehab, etc.

    I think it’s waaayyy past time for Ed to recognized. Who cares who said what or who did what. All that matters is the music. Ed looks great, the last tour was awesome and I will take Van Halen anyway they want to come. Ed needs to stay healthy and focused ’cause it is time to ROCK!! I liked the Sammy era but Van Halen is great with DLR and I want more!!

    I just saw the award show that aired last night. Ive gotta admit, seeing Ed up there was great. I dont care about all you who are whining about waiting too long for new music, or why he didnt show up for past preformances. Ed is a smart guy. Hes showing up on tv, winning awards, getting recognised. Hes building up his strength once again so when he does release his new stuff, it wont die out against the new music crap thats being produced.

    I can tell that soon, very soon, Van Halen is going to explode full force. Im not one to complain about Sammy and Mike with what they are doing with Chickenfoot. I loved them both in Van Halen, and I think its great that they’re staying active. On the positive side, that makes TWO killer bands that I get to see in the future. I want the “Best of Both Worlds!!” Why complain?!?

    Overall I think its great that Ed got this honor, cause there is no one else who deserves it. Simply put. I cant wait until the next step for him, but until then I’ll just have to keep playing the classic Gold that is Van Halen!!
